View Full Version : Mobile Site Limitations

On the mobile site, which I predominantly use, some critical functions are missing:

1. Formatting options. Some I know how to input manually. Others I have no clue.

2. Non-OOTS avatars. These are important/relevant in some threads.

3. Private Messaging. At least, I haven't been able to figure out how to do it.

Is there any chance these functions will get added to the mobile site so people who can't always get on via a desktop won't get a gimped experience?

I realize I can view the desktop site through my phone, but the format is obviously not optimized for a phone and there's no clear method for getting back to the mobile site - I'm still not sure how I managed it last time.

There is a theme dropd down box in the lower left corner where you can select "Playground Sand Mobile". That is imo clear enough. :smallwink:

The lack of avatars is the reason I'm using the standard site on my android. They are just so very useful to keep track of who is who.

Ah, thank you! That's helpful, though it would still be nice to have the mobile site itself be a bit more fully featured.

You can find instructions on supported bbcode here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode).

This is unfortunately a necessary limitation as our avatar system doesn't host and resize your avatars.

3. Private Messaging. At least, I haven't been able to figure out how to do it.

Press the grid menu button (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/images/sand/mobile/gridmenu.png).

Then, once there, click on Messages (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/images/sand/mobile/messages.png).

Or I can switch to the desktop site. Or I can quote someone else who has used it, And mimic them. Or I can....

But any way I do it, I have to open up another web page to get the formatting codes I don't already know (and still have to input them manually, which for some of the more involved codes can get complicated), instead of going through the wizard provided to desktop users.

Shouldn't the browser be able to handle resizing regardless of origin?

Ah. If I had seen that one before my original post, I would have known to specify that I don't see a link from the profile page of another user.

Looks like you're all set then.

Filesize, not dimensions.

The mobile version of the forum site contains only a subset of the features available on the full version. It is designed for quick browsing/reading of generic threads. Not all features are available, nor will every page link to other pages in the same way, and the full version is accessible to overcome these limitations.

Sheriff: I think that's probably a final answer on the subject. If Rawhide has more to add or would like to entertain further questions he can post or reopen the thread.
