I remember reading an bestiary or something supplemental in pathfiner(I believe) about a fine or diminutive parasite that was basically a worm that crawls into a person's ear and controls their mind.

I'm building a campaign that I'm really excited about- I don't mind building my own creature, but I'd like to find this parasite or at least something similar to use as a starting point.

Not sure about pathfinder, but there's the Puppeteer (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/resources/systems/pennpaper/dnd35/soveliorsage/psionicMonsters.html#puppeteer) in 3.5.

If I recall correctly, their biggest weakness is that they have to leave their host body once every three days to absorb Kandrona rays from a Yeerk Pool.

YES! That is exactly what I'm looking for, thank you!

I see what you did there.

In real life, there are Gordian worms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df_iGe_JSzI) (drives its host towards water, where the host dies and the worm continues on its way).

Another fun one is Dicrocoelium dendriticum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dicrocoelium_dendriticum), which zombifies ants by taking control of their nervous system - but only at night!
