View Full Version : Which character would you play?

Edit: Elan left out because poll is limited to 5 options, and I could noit imagine anyone wanting to play him anyway. :)

I have played characters similar to Haley. Only she did not have any latent bisexuality.

Do you mean haley or the character you played?

As for latent bisexuality in the strip, well, thog goes carry a double headed axe, and we all know what that stands for today. Then again there was belkar hitting on roy and kissing V. (I know belkar claims he knew it was roy and did it just to mess with him. Suuuuure he did.....)

And of course sabine hinted that her shapshifting abilities had been used while with Nale on occasion.

Oh yeah, and sabine hit on Miko. well, we all know miko is pure DC now, don't we?

Haley or V. Haley looks like the most fun, but I'm big on tactics. My friend would definitely play V, he loves overly elaborate plans and such things.

Had to sneak into some gangs hideout, the rival gang gave him an outfit, and he didn't take it, scouted the hideout, checked out the sewers, found a pipe up into an abandoned room, cut a hole in the door, rigged up a rope and pulley system, shot someone through the hole, shot down the pulley system which was also set up to make it look like there was a skeleton with a crossbow inside, when that didn't work he bought a room in an inn two buildings down, climbed out the window onto the gang buildings roof, scouted around up there, eventually couldn't find a way in and went back and got the outfit and did it the simple way...

I fixed it for you.

It still make no sense as far as I'm concerned but maybe its just because I'm french.

Roy for me, I just played nine characters so far: Two greats leaders who are also really cynical (Roy and Shojo). Two reals bastards who are all style no substance and liked it that way (Nale). An overconfident kamikaze sorcerer/barbarian who liked to teleport in a group of weak enemies and blast everyone (he had two levels in barbarian, just enough to survive his own spells and it was a war campaign so there was always some group of weak but annoying monsters). A very shy and calm but deadly girl rogue. A really lazy and pervert fighter who neverž really wanted to be an adventurer anyway. A way too good barbarian who often saved total stranger from death by taking the hits and had a mercifull greataxe. Finally, a multiclass bard/ranger that died... Nale and Shojo are not in the poll so: Roy.

Edit: By the way, I agree with Grasilich. If I could, I would play Nale.

While I'd usually go V because of my love for arcane magic, I'd have to go with Belkar on this one. He just looks like he'd be an interesting character to try. Just look at 439.

Nale = win.

Nale = tied up in a magic-proof cell counting on help from a minion who has decided to sign up with his only other free minion.

Nale ≠ win

This is a hard call; I sometimes wind up being in a support position, usually via bardic magic(though none of my bards have been as silly or stupid as Elan). I do enjoy combat-oriented classes, so I'd have to go with Roy. I just haven't been able to channel my inner Belkar enough to effectively play a combat psycho most of the time; I prefer the more stoic, serious type.

I just barely picked Durkon. I try to vary what class and race I play from campaign to campaign, but playing a classic hammer-swinging dwarf was one of the more fun experiences from recent games. Still, Belkar tempts me so...

I would play Elan... In fact, my DM has asked me to play an Elan-like bard for an upcoming campaign, because I am incredibly good at acting like an innocent idiot and get away with it.

I chose V in the list you provided, bacause I also like to kick but with arcane might.

I like playing intrisincally humorous characters, so I'd opt for either Belkar or Elan. Since Elan isn't on the list, Belkar's for me.
However, I also tend to become the party leader, so Roy would be a sensible option for me, too.
Wouldn't like to play as Durkon (I like him, but I don't like being the party's healer), V (unoptimised build - weak CON, caster-blaster... gimme a break) or especially Haley (I'm no misogynist, but her inner issues + even more unoptimised build than V's; archer rogue with an apparently umagical weapon; are more than enough for me).

Well if I'm basing it on what I'd really be like in a campaign battle I'd be Elan because knowing me I wouldn't really kill anything and I'd just run around having fun

However I'd probs want to be Belkar in a campaign I mean its a bit of a shame he's a halfling and all but... I like killing things *insert crazy eyes* *twitches* or maybe V cos then I'd be able to prepare explaosive runes. Most likely Belkar tho.

Oh come one who doesn't like killing goblins or making things go boom?

Althought Sabine's evilness and being a fiend does have it's charms....

okay I'm at a loss I can't decide.... well this was productive(!)

Classically, I would be Durkon. Always used to be the cleric, trying to vary the concept. Lawful-Good Dwarwen dendrophobic honourbound cleric of Thor? Would have gotten there given time...

Recently, I played a ruthless half-orc Bond-like rouge. perhaps I should chose the shadow-dancer, if he was an option. Haley could also do. I actually think that Haley is most close to what I would choose to play today. All the issues, but good at heart... plus I like cryptograms!

Tough decision, since all my favorite characters are either NPCs (:xykon: :thog: :roach: :redcloak: :mitd: ) or terribly suboptimized (:elan: :belkar: ).

I guess DMing would be most fun, but since this is out of question, Elan.
With a decent spell list, if possible.

Wow, no votes for Haley? We got a bunch of misogynists here or something?

I play female characters occasionally, but it's hard, you know? : ) I'm not exactly a trained actor.

As for this instance, neither of these characters appeal to me very much.

I like fighters, but not fighters with the kind of views that Roy seem to have ~~

Belkar is tempting I guess, but if I want to play an evil madling I'd probably take it a step further even ;) Something like say, this guy: http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/Dectilon/walach.jpg?t=1176988336

I couldn't keep up with V I think. I'm probably way better at spouting "olde" words in english than I am in swedish ~~

Haley is a rogue. I don't like rogues. The "classic" rogue as an idea is like a huge joke to me. Couldn't play one even if I tried : )

As for Durkon, I've never been good with "lawful" good characters. I naturaly lean towards the slightly evil or at least potentialy dangerous dangerous characters (Say chaotic good) because they are more interesting to me. I want to be able to do the unexpected when I feel like it.

As for Elan, I've been known to play Elan-like characters, but that's usualy never originaly intended. There's a clear correlation to how Elan-ish my characters get and how tired I am :)

Amusingly, I was going to pick Elan. Why?

Well, I like high Charisma characters, because they let you do all sorts of goofy things if the DM isn't one of those "adventurers exist to kill!" people. One time, with a very charismatic Paladin, I was able to convince a Neutral Manticore to join the party, convert to Lawful Good, and gained a ridiculous advantage over just about anything we met from that point on- leading the DM, who thought the whole thing was great, to contrive all sorts of stupendous tricks to get rid of (as he put it) "your pet".

I'd like to pick Elan, because he's a fighter now, I *love* Prestige Classes, and the idea of making a bad joke every time I attacked tickles me to no end.

" Is that chest hair? Let me get that for you."

Swing! Right through the heart!

... On second thought, maybe I shouldn't pick Elan...

I'm equally split between V, Haley, and Belkar. I love the higher levels of arcane kick-a$$, I'm a deep supporter of everything stealthy (especially pickpocketing random wealthy-looking (N)PCsm even those in my party), and there is something satisfying about being a godless killing machine.

But in the end, I picked Haley.

Elan. He's funny, he's a "Dashing Swordsman," kind of like Zorro, and Haley has the total HOTS for him! In fact, it seems that ONLY Elan (and Nale, but come on, Sabine is a skank!) has managed to get... Treasure Type "O!"

Personally, I picked Belkar because he'd be super easy to play. Any gaming session would be like this:

DM: You see a monster.
Me: I stab it until it's dead.
DM: Your party members are chastizing you because that was a plot-related character.
Me: I harvest their XP.

...and so on. I really dislike playing really involved characters. I tried to give my character a long background story once, but it didn't really fit with what we were doing, so it started getting hard to explain his motivations after a while. Also, evil characters are great, especially when the other party members aren't privy to this information. ::wink wink::

Last year, I played a bard character strongly influenced by Elan. He was one of the few characters of the group that never died in the course of the campaign. Of course, I being the power-gamer I am, gave him a noteworthy Intelligence and Wisdom, apart from a natural 18 at Charisma at first level, and a more or less convenient use of spells, mostly on himself. Being based on Elan, he still preferred diplomacy over fighting, made inconvenient decisions at times (having a 16 in Intelligence and Wisdom and being C/G doesn't make you immune to mistakes), and when the group visited an oracle, rather than asking anything related to the adventure, he asked if he would ever see his family alive again, (which would be a happy ending for him, since the whole reason he started adventuring was because his family had dishonored itself, and the city's lord demanded the group of characters served him on a mission to clean their respective families' reputation. After that, my character never saw his family again) using his magical rapier rather a lot in melee, and using his bardic music every time the group entered combat [oddly enough for a bard, he only had ranks in Peform (oratory), so he never sung a song until he got tired of everyone asking him why he didn't sing if he was a bard and picked a feat that allowed him to treat his main Perform ranks as ranks in Perform (sing), Perform (dance) and Perform (weapon drill)]. If I had to play any other character, I'd guess I'd play Roy or V, since I rather like arcane magic and all the feats the fighters get to have, but before playing them, I'd make sure to uber-maximize their stats and make them qualify for a "cool" prestige class.

BardicDuelist
2007-04-21, 10:25 AM
My instinctive reaction was Elan as well. Without the option, Haley.
Rogues and bards are my fav. to play, and they are my two fav. characters in the strip. I play with a player who plays SEVERAL characters like Belkar (and has never read the strip), so they wouldn't be fun for me. My wizards are typically a little off their rocker, so V would be a little dull for me (to play, to read not at all of course). Roy and Durkon just don't have the skill points for my tastes.

I can't choose. I'm stuck between Roy and Haley.

Vaarsuvius might be fun for a short game, but trying to come up with all that overblown dialogue would get tiring in a long session.

Elan, again, in a shorter campaign, would be cool, but he's a little too silly even for me.

Trying to continually sink to new and interesting depths of depravity for Belkar would grate on my nerves after a session or two.

Durkon is closer to my speed, but he's a tad too plain. Also, spellcasters are too much work (says the guy who's trying to break into DMing).

So that leave Haley, whose secretive nature, skillmonkey class, and natural charm make her rife with interesting possibilities and Roy whose straightforward class and dour sense of sarcasm would also be very fun.

...

Though not as fun as Haley. What the heck, I've made up my mind.

I have a reputation for sneaky roguish types and Haley fits in with that pretty well! I also used to play a lot of Clerics, but a damp flannel has more personality than poor old Durkon, and second I really, REALLY hate dwarves!

I picked Belkar but mainly for the Chaotic nature, not the Evil. Roy's out because he's Lawful, and I never enjoyed playing spellcasters (too lawful again, all that learning stuff and organising your material components etc.) or thieves (too dishonest). That really only leaves one small, hairy-footed option.

A dwarven cleric of Thor might be acceptable. I've always liked Thor but not dwarves so much.

Belkar. While I do enjoy the satisfaction of mopping the floor with my enemies, I am at heart a bloodthirsty SOB.

Durkon
I've always liked divine casters, and I could easily picture myself playing a champion of Thor as he's represented in the comic. I'd rather play a human, but dwarves are still cool. And it's always fun to play a character with some funny foreign accent.

I'd go with Roy since I'm more of a "fighter" guy meself. Even though I love oblitherating my enamys into an oblivion, it's just not as fun as busting somebody's skull with a good old fashioned mace.:roy:

Belkar probably - 'cos I've got a PC from years back who was a psychotic PKing Halfling.

Or maybe Durkon because I'm all about the clerics.

Which character ... decisions, decisions ... they're all so great.

j/k! Belkar, of course. He's just so over the top, it'd be a blast to play him.

Mind you, they all have their good points. Elan, I think, would be my second choice. I'd play him as a sort of naive innocent idiot savant. A fun role. Stoic and stolid Durkon has his comic moments, too, so he could be fun. Haley's "glitter girl gimme gold" personality also has its merits. I have less of a handle on V than the rest, so I dunno, but I could definitely pull it off.

Roy seems different than the rest. As the strong hero of the strip, I think his roll is primarily that of the straight man. He'd be hardest for me to pull off, I think, so he's last on my list.

I voted for V because I enjoy playing blasters BUT I like playing Bards more, and I WOULD have voted for Elan if he were an option in this poll.

Regardless of who I'd want to play, I'd probably be stuck playing Roy anyway. For some odd reason, being the guy in charge who has to deal with a bunch of misfits who don't really listen to him anyway sounds awfully familiar to me...

You'll have to read in a bit to see what I mean. :smallamused:

I would have to go with Durkon. He's just an all around cool character and I've always been a sucker for clerics. Let's face it, they really are like walking boxes of band-aids!:smallamused:

Definitely Haley. I tend to always play female characters with chaotic good alignments, and I have a love of rogues and rangers. I can't be bothered with preparing spells, but I like staying out of the main of the action and shooting in. I also like being in charge, and since Haley is back-up to Roy that would suit me just fine too :)

I would get annoyed if the game got sidetracked for 5 minutes while the Elan player messed around. I like the idea of a smart meatshield.
