What's wrong with using a more direct derivative of the UN flag, anyway? The use of olive branches as symbols of peace date back thousands of years, and those encircling a map of the planet better represents unity.

I didn't even think of it as a political question when I posed it, honestly, but more a practical one... if I were to design a "United Earth" flag, it would probably end up with a projection of the Earth, and some kind of historic symbol of peace or unity, and the UN has such a flag and is already the largest entity for international cooperation. Star Trek's United Federation of Planets uses essentially the same design (replacing the projection of Earth with a field of stars) as well as a variation on the idea (a different projection, gold instead of white, and a single olive branch) for its predecessor government, United Earth, in Enterprise. Fittingly, the Terran Empire replaces the olive branch with a sword, representing unity through conquest instead of diplomacy.

To make up a whole new flag with more abstract imagery seems to me to be unnecessary (and I'd personally have used 6 rings if it's supposed to represent a flower since the shape gets a little less flower-y when you use tightly-interlocking rings, and the artist doesn't make the claim that it also represents the continents in order to justify the numerology).

To be fair, i like the more abstract and simpler imagery. In fact, i find the UN and EU flags waaaaay too cluttered and complicated for their good as a staying power.

Just because "something has been done before", its no argument. And i like the use of something else than a map of the Earth to represent it.

The best and most effective flags, imo at least, tend to be abstract, with geometric designs. The one presented isn't perfect, and is possibly a little hard to replicate on a casual basis, but I do think it's better than any attempt at a global flag I've seen to date.

In all seriousness its not a bad flag, kinda Celtic, but for Earth? Im more of a fan of 1 stripe per continent and one star per country. Yes this idea is based off the American flag, but hey everyone gets to be on it now.
