Hi everyone, I'm Thanqol, and I draw pictures for fun.

My goal in life is to achieve the ideal of the Renaissance Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymath). It seems such a beautiful concept. To this end I draw a picture every day, no excuses.

Damned if I know.

Day 1464: Home

Trying to mentally compose a Savvyhead's workspace; fitting the entire thing into the back of a semi trailer. This has a lot of things I like:
- the in-progress engine blocks dangling from the ceiling, making people duck or crawl to get around
- The side door can be opened to fire a heavy machinegun out; I'm thinking to move the tires across to act as improvised cover for the gunner.
- The huge electromagnet on a crane extension can be moved out at the same time as the MG is going, picking up cars and tossing them around
- The truck can sort of open up like a stage and spread everything out to act as a major repair workstation
- The bed underneath the workbench, that's cool

What I don't have enough of is space for crap. A savvyhead's workspace should be a weird and magical place, and more than that, it should be a home. I noted some ideas for crap on the side, some I like more than others. I'm going to spend some time thinking about it.

Also Fury Road was just as good the second time.

Add a third dimension to that. A truck isn't especially wide, but it's wide enough that there could be boxes littering the wall next to that magnet and spare parts all over the floor around the workbench.

I tried but it was a huge mess, I wanted to do the 2D spacing first so I had a vague idea of what needed to go where.

Deviant art is what I usually use since almost everything there marked as stock has no issues surrounding it.

Any old magazine lying around is the more traditional method. It in theory has copy write issues but nobody cares.

Lay 'em down! I'll either do them or I won't depending on how I feel

I generally enjoy doing them but the caveat is that I am interested in learning new things so I may take it as an opportunity to experiment. I do not guarantee results of any quality.

Oh man, this EU4 expansion. I knew it would wipe me out but dang I've lost the last few days entirely to it. It's fundamentally changed warfare by restricting mobility and ensuring sieges feel - see this is the problem.

I'm going to force myself to take a break tomorrow and hopefully cut down during the week so I can fix my sleep cycle, so hopefully art production is going to get back to normal soon.

(In case anyone doesn't know, any day I don't post a thing is a day when I did a pen and paper sketch, which I then endlessly procrastinate about uploading.)

I went and started it up the other day without realizing this and found myself wondering what all the little fort icons were, and why my troops were walking in a giant circle for months to get to the next province over.

I don't actually have any of the DLC though, so if you had to recommend one, which one would it be?

Common Sense, followed by Art of War, and then all the others. But really they're all amazing so buy every single one.

Okay, how the forts work now. You can't bypass forts. If you enter a province next to a fort you can either walk directly at the fort, or turn around and walk away. No other options. It's great, it totally transforms warfare. If you occupy a province within a fort's control range then the moment your troops leave the fort will reassert control.

It's only for a few months, once the kid gets even a little ability to not be in constant need, you'll be able to go over. My group in D.C. before I moved had a baby and invited us over within 3 months, which allowed for playing with no problem (they had to tend to the kid a couple times, but interruptions were short and naps were long).

Of course, your reaction may be "3 months!? Are you trying to kill me of boredom!?" In which case I cannot help you.

Well- I forgot to post my challenge, didn't I?

Well, here are two:

1- Drawn in a somewhat romantic style: A young maiden, about 16, maybe 19 years of age, dressed in bright blue floral dress, a nice pink bonnet on her head, sipping on a cup of tea- Point being, she looks incredibly innocent and pure. She is followed by the flaming, bloody skeletal remains of a troll and a tiger brought alive by necromantic energy. She is leaning on the tiger, reading a necronomicon.

2- An old, 80-something woman idly knitting, a small cup of tea on a table, sitting on a table with a ton of doilies. Skeletons are also cleaning the room. The style should be somewhat reminiscent of 50s era style, with the skeleton being painted in a manner that makes them seem mundane to a 50s era setting.

These both appear somewhat outside your standard style, but consider it a challenge to step outside your standard style into something more esoteric.

Hm- Looking good so far. And the challenge was more for a different style than your standard method, rather than anything else. Your style is distinctly modern, and I can see a fair bit of influence from the various shows you watched- As such, I wanted to pose a challenge to draw something in a style that's different to the one you usually do- In this case, the Romantic style, and in the other's state, 50's modern style (Not quite sure the real name, but like it's from the 50s and such).

And she was reading a Necronomicon, so the something awful is probably a better fit. And the leaning on the tiger was more to design something with a bit of familiarity, like, "This is my pet tiger- I call her fluffy. Don't mind she's on fire." more than anything else.

Day 1508: the deadly hunter

The funniest request of all time needs to be immortalised:

I like to have pictures for my characters, the problem is I am not very good at drawing. I have a ranger/monk gestalt that fight a bit like spiderman or daredevil.

The priest felt a chill are the black haired wanderer approached. Many rumors had been floating around camp about the hunter. The silver studs stood in stark contrast to the red sleeveless long coat that hung to his knees. The blue tinged chains wrapped around him like some kind of belt ending at two cleaver like knives in his boots. As he watched the rattle of the chains seemed to be more of a twitch of anticipation. His hands were adorned with red gloves that had silver fangs embossed. Even with the bodies in the street, this man scared him far more than the rumors of Vampires and Werewolves on the verge of open warfare. The cardinal had said there would be more hunters coming, that this was just the first to arrive from the Hunters guild. What kinds of men dedicate their lives to hunting such monsters…

Hey Thanqol, have you ever watched Steven Universe? I think it would be right up your alley.

I saw the first episode and totally hated it. Nothing in it worked for me. I might give it another shot someday but my to-do list is huge.

Day 1511: Doctorb

I haven't been pushing myself artistically recently. Part of it is that it's too cold to spend long periods of time at my artbench, part of it is angsting over how much better things will be when I get my own place and get the space for a proper setup, part of it is an EU4 addiction, part of it is general business and a recent burnout, part of it is my graphics card slowly melting down, and part of it is that I'm just at a really difficult developmental phase where I'm just not sure what I need to do to progress further.

Some of that I can't deal with in the short term, some of that I can't deal with in general, but I can deal with the EU4 thing. I respond well to simple, absolute rules (like "A picture every day") so here's a new one: Every time I finish playing EU4 I have to uninstall it. If I want to play it again I have to wait an hour for it to download again from steam, which means that there's an extra hour for other stuff every day. I'm looking to start pushing myself again; I don't like my recent history of relative stagnation.

Day 1514: Forerunners

Was inspired by this awesome alternate take on 40K:

My first thought was "More Nazism, less Michael Bay". Which sounded good. And the first thing that came into my mind was an Ork commander with a monocle and a smart black uniform saying "Forvard zer Panzers", and that was pretty much perfect.

But you can have too much of a good thing, so I adjusted the concept to a fluff swap. And this is what came out:

Terran Diaspora
Humans with a ramshackle attitude to hardware
Do you like the Millennium Falcon, Miles O'Brien, or the Serenity? Then the Diaspora is for you. Humanity spread out into a big, hostile galaxy, and immediately set about using all the weird bits and pieces of technology they could find. Nobody really knows how it all works, but human engineers will make it work nevertheless. Unpredictable and boisterous, humans show up whenever they are least expected. Some claim they have no identity, and will cheerfully accept any old mutant or xeno. Humans retort that their diversity is their identity. Needless to say, they are dangerous just to be around.

Orkreich
Orks running a sprawling, corrupt Imperium
Eight foot tall, green, tusked Space Nazis. No excuses. Orks reproduce rapidly, covering entire planets with their hive cities, and the orkish war machine is a disciplined and superbly equipped fighting force. They always need more living space, and they know how to get it: exterminate the other races. You can feel really positive about shooting these guys, if they don't shoot you first.

The Seed
Naive and curious biotech hive mind
When a Seed lands on a planet, drifting down out of interstellar space, it awakens as a newborn. It absorbs nutrients, develops a personality, and initiates a peaceful dialog with its new neighbours. Unfortunately, the Seed can only talk by eating people with a swarm of mind-linked flesh rippers, and it has never yet managed to carry out a successful conversation. It is perpetually confused, but rarely hungry.

Forerunners
Ancient and voracious culture of assimilation
"For the Greater Good," said the signal. "Surrender your command codes and disarm your ships. You will become part of the Forerunner Community." And if anyone was left in the system, they met the Forerunner Vanguard: a starfleet division so massive its mere presence could disrupt the orbit of planets. The Forerunner Admirals, resplendent in very snappy uniforms, command the deployment of endless exo-suited combat regiments from luxurious bridges. If you've seen much anime space opera, you know exactly what to expect: Gamilons meet Ahb meet Tytania. It's not a proper battle if someone doesn't hurl a wine glass to the floor in a fit of pique. Afterwards the brain staples are applied to survivors.

Corruption
Soulless plague that seeks to consume all advanced civilizations
The problem with computers: the longer they run, the more they tend to create skull-faced robots to exterminate all organic life. It's just how these things seem to work. The Corruption goes further, and invites the living to surrender their souls and join the cybernetic revolution. The great AIs of iTerror coordinate the subversion of technology and wetware across the Galaxy.

Genius
Ancient alliance of gods and spirits obsessed with their own preservation
Living minds tend to create spirits in their own image. Later in a planet's cultural evolution, they outgrow their youthful gods and turn to rationality and science as explanatory mechanisms. The spirit world requires belief to thrive, and so inevitably gods must turn to increasingly overt and coercive techniques to obtain and retain followers. The Genius are a galactic alliance of ancient gods striving to preserve their cults. As this spits in the face of evolution and natural curiosity, they have adopted some pretty extreme dogmatic protocols. Anything to ward off chaos and hoard more souls.

Vergar
Fragments of an ancient and beautiful empire of short, squat humanoids
Once upon a time, the Vergar ruled the Galaxy. Their star tunnels linked the worlds and their craftworlds produced wonders of art and technology combined. Vergar artefacts were so cunning that they had a mind of their own, and could talk to their maker across great distances. Since the Corruption tore their network apart, they have become a mere shadow of their former selves, factional and melancholy. Some refuse to believe their glory days are behind them, and in general they're extremely arrogant about all the "hulks", as they call the taller races who now roam the stars. Special note should go to the Dark Vergar, who embrace a sybaritic lifestyle and frequently take slaves.

Pointers
Space elves that were cut out of the lore 20 years ago
But a lot of people remain devoted fans.

Well there is still something charming of monochromatic art. The black jacket, standing on a black hill, against white sky makes him almost a silhouette character. And then there is the touch of orange for the visor that pops and gives him character-- orange can be an energetic color of blatant or vulgar emotion (which fits well with the rebel part).

Different shading styles if you wanna try something new:

in between (http://pre09.deviantart.net/7ade/th/pre/i/2013/311/b/4/tarcan___cel_shading_by_nondev-d6ted6t.jpg)

All of these are with linework, but I'm pretty sure you could pull off the shading without it. I've used the 2-tone/3/4-tone shading with hard edges before with lineless work, it usually turns out pretty well.

Alright, I'm back on. Rig's performing a bit better, the updating went well. Windows 10 is pretty cool.

But goddamn it if I can not figure out how the hell to art right now. I banged my head against a wall trying to work out how to do lineless shading but I guess I'm an idiot or something because I could not do it. So I just gave up and threw down and blurred some half-assed shadings and then added hard black lines. Insultingly it turned out looking really good - way better than all my bumbling experiments with lineless for sure. That's really crazy frustrating.

I am going through a bad phase where I can see where I want to be but I cannot figure out how to get there. It's been dogging me for a while and I'm no closer to a breakthrough. I'm pretty sure I know the answer though - watch more videos, read more tutorials, experiment more wildly, and never give up. I've got 8468 days to figure this out after all.

Day 1533: Primary Demographic

Had another meeting with the dreaded Primary Demographic today. She told me about her OC pony that she'd been imagining and I started drawing it for her. I'll finish it the next time she comes over. Super rough so far.

Her backstory is that she arrives in Ponyville and no one likes her because she's different ("Different how?" "I don't know yet. Different.") but she eventually makes friends with all the ponies. She's "Always happy, except when she's sad - never angry" except "Sometimes when she gets mad at people being mean to her so she plays pranks on them". She promised to come back with a notebook full of information later.

I am going through a bad phase where I can see where I want to be but I cannot figure out how to get there.

I call that the 'Downtown Paradox'. Because trying to reach a point in Downtown Orlando is much like your feeling with art. I see the location, but roads don't always go in two directions and many storefronts have no parking lot around them, requiring I go someplace else for proper parking.

That being said, I think your coloring of Spitfire is pretty good. You some nice soft-to-mid-hard shading there and preserving the thick lineart gives it a neat 'decal' look.

I think a lot of that style of art has to do with understanding subject/object volume as much as it does light and shadow. Studying a lot of other people's art and just copying what you see will help you get started. Another way you could do it is to shade your artwork like you normally do, and then (if you're using photoshop) go to Filter > Artistic > Cutout. From there you can select how many colors/levels you want. The program takes the average and muddle up the color somewhat, so you'll have to re-color the 'cutouts' to maintain the brightness, but it's a quick and easy solution to the two-tone style roadblock you're up against right now.

Not sure how comparable this is, but sometimes you have the learning and you just have to do it and fail a bunch until your hands and your head stop getting in the way of what you're attempting.

My comparison as a musician is memorizing a piece of music. I used to do this all the time when I was in school, like for competitions and stuff. And there were three phases:
1) learning and memorizing. I'd finish this and think I totally had it.
2) repeatedly screwing it up and getting incredibly frustrated because I had done it right before but would constantly make new mistakes, forget parts, or just not execute on the piece right.
3) Actually getting it, where you no longer have to think about what you're doing and therefore do not screw up.

I'd describe this as having a good handle on metal and trying to break into jazz, but I keep playing myself into corners I can only get out of by being metal.

But all in all, I think that maybe my overriding problem is that I'm trying to be too specific right now. My most fun in drawing comes when I treat it like play, not when I try and force a specific result. I should be more flexible and open. Especially if I'm trying to learn a new thing I'm not going to get there with accepted methods, I need to open my brain and see what comes in.

As the challenger it's only appropriate that I allow you to name the challenge, whether it be drawing a prompt, something that we both have difficulty with or a speed test.

Do you have a drawthread? I can't see it. If it's linked in your signature it's broken.

Anyway, draw the ugliest person you can. Show me what you got.

A shot at a colour scheme. I tried doing a fady pen detailing for the face and I'm not sure if it works; used a more traditional hard brush on the jacket. I think I want to go without external lines and minimal internal ones, see how clean I can get it.

Yeah, thanks! Ugly faces are interesting. They're not formulatic, you can't just draw an invisible nose and two big eyes and call it a day. You gotta consider the angles and asymmetries. And I've yet to have someone take me up on my challenge of 'draw ugly people!"

Awright! You're on!

As far as the definition of ugliness: It's actually a flippant definition and challenge to artists who get caught up in drawing a very narrow type of Hollywood or anime style generic prettiness. I'm generally interested in people with unusual, craggy and unmistakable features - not necessarily ugly but definitely unusual. Minorities that don't fit in the smooth-skinned, clean cut action hero image. Africans, old people, and fat people often have really interesting faces that I think are under-represented artistically. I prefer looking at them to young, smooth skinned generics. This guy (https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/6HLKrhWVAwbNCEap0EotLFNxGa1TCp_WHinyhZtm6yU=w750-h755-no), or this guy (https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kyHZjveRstg/T_V_9HYfqqI/AAAAAAAABXE/5lbLIuV-f1g/w334-h500-no/homelessman.jpg), or this guy (https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qSL4HVwoQwo/UDsx73rB05I/AAAAAAAACFc/6yTA8-0Nihw/w609-h744-no/richard%2Bavedon%2B-%2B7.jpg).

Day 1553: SCREW THE EIGHTIES

SERIOUSLY! It's a cultural VOID! It's a paradox manifestation! It's a deep, diseased, rotting blight on the history of our species! The eighties were the nadir! Worse than the Black Death! Worse than Ghengis Khan! More was lost in the empty, vapid gaping pit of the eighties than in the Sack of Baghdad, the conquest of the Aztecs or in the burning of the Library of Alexandria!

What I'm trying to say is that I watched Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome today.

The first Mad Max movie was boring. The second one, Road Warrior, was good! Like a proto Fury Road, limited by the technology of their time. The third one was... well, like, you know how the first two Mad Max movies were filled with rape and murder and carnage and car chases and Mad Max killing EVERYONE? The third one was a kids movie. It was like Return of the Jedi except Luke gets written out of the story after Jabba's palace so we can follow the adventures of the loveable Ewoks.

Like goddamn. I am legitimately upset. SANDY RAVAGE IS VISIBLY UPSET. Part of that's because the movie suckered me in with a really awesome opening about Barter Town before pulling the Valley of the Ewoks reversal on me with no warning. And then I'm stuck there staring with increasing disbelief as the creepy, maniacal dwarf who runs Bartertown like a sick little tyrant on a power trip transforms into a loveable old man in a suit riding a magical train full of laughing children away to a wondrous land of enchantment.

SCREW THE 1980S.

Anyway they say a picture is worth a thousand words. But I'm too angry to even work on this more. I need to wash this taste out of my mouth somehow. Goddamn it!

Day 1597: elaborate setup

Thanqol is now the proud owner of a little two bedroom unit in the suburbs of Canberra. Even got the first thunderstorm of the season to help commemorate the occasion. BOOM! Holy crap!

I also celebrated by spending my leftover savings on a brand new, state of the art, top of the line Alienware death machine PC to replace this aging pile of junk. I also started the wheels turning on getting power and enough internet to run cat videos all day. Now I just need to buy a fridge, a couch and a table and I'm set for life, dawg.

Congrats on the house!

What you wrote on dA felt very familiar. I've been looking for a new place for a long time, and there's just so much crap where I keep thinking, I'm not going to even bother doing anything about this until I get that place. Let it rot, let it wait, let everything fall apart around me, it'll be wiped off the face of the earth when I get a new place. Damn, I know how that goes. I'm just waiting for the inheritance from my grandmother, which should be any month now, then I'm out of here. I can't wait to be in your situation, to walk into an empty home and make it mine.

For the longest time I figured I just wanted a bigger apartment, and there are benefits to renting, but lately I've spent a lot of time looking at houses too. It's hard to decide. I know what I want, but finding what I want for a price I can pay ... not easy.

I will say I'm glad what I wrote resonated. I always worry about my Seasonal blogs because they are by design really pretentious and personal, but I'm trying my best to capture my own current neurotic behaviour and hopefully master it by speaking its name.

I'm ashamed to admit I bought the first house I walked into. I just came in through the door and went 'yep this is me'.

I have no useful advice because I've never rented so can't speak to the difference, but I am very neurotic about debt. Debt is like... it just gnaws on my mind, I hate having it, and I'm already thinking in terms of 'get everything you need to live and the cease all savings while you pay down as much debt as possible as fast as possible'. I live like a monk, indulging only in certain carefully selected luxuries while channelling as much money as I can into savings or debt repayments. My life goal is to reach 50 with everything I want and zero debt of any kind.

You never know what resonates with others.

All the daydreaming and planning you described, I used to do that as a child too, except I used to dream about ships instead of houses, mostly. Reading your blog made me wonder why I stopped doing this sort of dreaming. I think it's because I eventually got it in my head that the things I dreamed of weren't things I could get, that I just didn't have the money to make my dreams come true. Such practicalities never entered my mind as a kid, and as an adult it was the opposite. It's kinda nice to think that maybe it's finally possible, and just dream of the possibilities.

I like to indulge myself, and I'm not especially good at saving for later, but I've become very concerned about debt too and I'm careful to have as little as possible and pay it off as quickly as I can too. I pay almost everything cash these days. A house is a little too big for that, though.

I'm looking for a house right now, but my situation is much more dire. Renting is too expensive and I need to be out of my current place by January. Unfortunately anything that is livable gets quickly snatched up by damn house flippers that can pay 120% of the house value in cash while I only got about 3% down and a loan to finance it with. So guess what sellers pick. :/

I don't recall a lot, to be honest. It was 20+ years ago, and it really hasn't occupied my thoughts since.

My dad used to take me and my sister sailing/fishing (ten wild horses couldn't get our mom on a ship, though). When I was around 9 he bought an old boat of his own (actually I think he had one before which he sold, but my memory is hazy on that point), and I remember spending hours just lying on the couch, staring into space and letting my mind sail on imaginary seas with that ship. I just remember I had lots of vivid imaginations and daydreams, and spent tons of time looking through magazines at ships and fishing equipment. Frequently visited the docks and the fishing store too, even though I didn't really have any money, I just liked to look and imagine the possibilities.

I love brown as a colour. It can transition anywhere between gold to crimson and subtle differences are so easy to notice. But you're right in that she is very ordinary looking. I don't think that's accidental; she's always been plain since I started drawing her and I always got the sense that she was making a statement with it.

Fly fishing is weird and alien.

The boat(s) my dad owned, and which he took us out fishing with, were old motor boat(s), so that was where my experience as a kid was. I think he always wanted a sailing ship, but he never got one. I was just happy as long as I got to go out on the open sea and fish, or spend time on the docks. Motor or sail, didn't much matter, but perhaps I would have felt more strongly about it if I had tried sails.

I worked briefly on a sailing ship, for half a year or so, in my late teens, and I have to say, it's a fantastic experience. It was a fairly large ship, and we were a handful of people who had a pretty great time together. I would take a sailing ship over a motor boat any day now, if I got the choice. I always loved the sea, I know of nothing more calming, refreshing than the open sea, but it's been so many years since I last sailed anywhere. One day I would love to buy a ship, just a small one perhaps, and head out to sea again.

Getting the house - I've opted to name it Samsara - sorted has been a lot of stress. But it's progressing well! Desk's arrived, couch is arrived, computer is arrived (albeit with a broken monitor so that sh*t has to be replaced). I'm contemplating taking the opportunity of the new machine to get a new tablet - mine is 1600 days old and showing its age - but the Australian Wacom site is out of stock of everything. Jerks.

So I'm stuck with pen and paper for a while longer!

Day 1613: The Cutest Couple

Oh wow, that session worked out great!

I decided to run a Batman game using Urban Shadows. It worked out to a really weird and fascinating alternate timeline and was one of the best sessions I've run with that group. A bunch of characters were genderflipped which resulted in some weird dynamics. Seriously, the session was amazing, and if you've ever wanted to run Urban Shadows do it this way.

Batgirl The Hunter: After her parents were murdered, Kay Wayne joined Doctors Without Borders and travelled to Africa in an attempt to make a difference in the world. The experience changed her and she returned to Gotham as a dedicated badass. Her target of choice is arms dealers and Wayne Enterprises in particular - too many times she saw the Wayne logo on guns and other weapons so she's returned to seize control of her birthright.

Alfred The Spectre: Alfred has been with the Wayne family for generations. Well, haunting the Wayne family for generations. The Wayne bloodline is his tether to the mortal world and he's dedicated to using his ghostly powers to helping his young Ward - and also creepily encouraging her to hook up with a nice young man and continue the bloodline.

Mangolia The Fay: Alternate universe Poison Ivy, Mangolia was an eco-protestor who stood against Wayne Enterprise's chronic pollution of Gotham. One day it got so bad that the city itself called her to Central Park where the last living flower in all of Gotham merged with her and empowered her to bring nature back to the city.

Hilariously she's never been outside the city and her entire idea of nature comes from David Attenborough documentaries.

Klaus Kaiser The Vamp: Klaus is an old school crime lord who's disgusted with the barbaric and uncivilised behaviour of modern criminals. He's entered the ring of organised crime in order to bring down the disorganised rabble and impose discipline and order on the mad streets of Gotham. Jessica Crane - AKA Scarecrow - works for him as an interrogator and loyal left hand.

The plot to the session was rather straightforwards: Bad guys attacked a charity ball! As Batman as it gets. One force was a supervillain called The Weatherman, a man who could transform into electricity and destroy technology. He was unleashed by Wayne Enterprises to destroy all non-Wayne electronics in his path, thus letting Wayne Enterprises bid to upgrade the Gotham City Surveillance System. The other force was the Elias Mafia family who wanted to whack one of the guests and dispatched Victoria Zsasz to see it done.

While Batgirl successfully confronted The Weatherman, Klaus and Scarecrow captured Zsasz and locked her in his creepy basement. Klaus ordered Scarecrow to mind control Zsasz, which was a bit of a head-scratcher because both of those guys specialise in capturing people and then doing mindbending sh*t to them. After thinking for a bit I figured that the only way that scene ends is with them hooking up. I think they make an adorable couple!

The rut is not actually the problem right now, two weeks ago I would have agreed with you but right now I'm pretty sure I'm in new territory. What's current is that I just switched up my art program and tablet and that's huge, nothing works like I'm used to. Right now my question isn't 'what do I draw' but 'what are the brush settings I need to do a basic drawing'.

But while I'm in this flux I'm keen to try out new programs and see if there's anything that clicks with me faster, so advice on programs and the specifics of brush settings would be really helpful right now.

I for real agree with you, this past year's been pretty stagnant. A big part of that, though, has been I've had much, much less time than I used to when I was a university student/unemployed, and I've been setting up a house and dealing with a computer meltdown for the past six months. It has been a source of no small amount of frustration for me.

I wish I could help you with your brush settings issue, but I'm a paint/pen-and-paper guy. The only program I use for digital stuff is Photoshop, and if you haven't tried it; I highly recommend it. There are textures and filters and opacity and jitter and all sorts of fun stuff to play with for just the brush tool, not to mention layers etc. But I've noticed a lot of the pros don't use any of that extra stuff. They use two or three layers, no less than 70% opacity, swatches, and the eyedropper tool.

Oh! And congrats on the house!! I was hunting for the last 3 months, and have decided to take a break. It was added stress to babies, and art and business endeavors.

That was much the reason why I stuck with SAI so long. It gives you all the tools you need and none of the fancy crap you don't. I may end up re-purchasing it depending on if I reach an accord with Corel, which does painting better but sketching worse.

Photoshop, though, costs an eye-watering $20 a month, forever, as opposed to SAI's $30 once. It does offer a free trial, though, so my current plan is to wait till I have my month off (hopefully March) and try and output as much as I can then to get the most out of it.

I have actually been doing a bunch of pen and paper stuff but I have been endlessly procrastinating about uploading it.

I am infinitely glad that I have had no time pressure on when the move happens. Photoshop is good but expensive, and most of what it can do is duplicated in other programs. Though it does have the occasional thing I haven't seen elsewhere (transform selection I'm looking at you! Actually, I should put in a feature request for that).

I find fancy brushes great for specific tasks that would be hard to do otherwise. For example the default brush for starfields is great, because to get a good high density one otherwise requires a lot of work with filters and things. I had a good brush for grass in PS. Most stuff can just be done with pretty basic brushes though; after all, it works pretty well for traditional artists.

Day 1654-1659: Elegance

I love doing these. They're simple, relaxing, fun, focusing. I want to do 30 days of these in a row, let's see how that works out!

Just to be clear, these are traces. I'm just getting the hang of the brush right now and I don't wanna deal with sketching for a little while.

Again, these are traces, but I do think I'm getting a good handle on line width and shape which is a big plus.

Day 1662: Battleships

I'm really enjoying these. They're zero stress and they're teaching me to think differently about what kinds of lines are necessary.

It's a trace of this (https://anime8manga.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/iowajapanatorcom_thumb.jpg?w=429&h=481). For some reason Japan decided to make a dating sim for battleships.

Today is the day!

For the past three months I've been moving in and accumulating furniture for my very own house! And now, after so long wishing, so long saving, and so much working I'm finally here for reals! I've moved all my crap across and my ultimate achievement - named Samsara - is complete!

I have photos!

Life goal is to keep this place as clean and uncluttered as it is now.

http://i.imgur.com/Zr9mxDU.jpg
Exterior. A lovely metal set of chairs and tables, rosebushes, and an enormous overgrown Eucalypt tree with a nest full of screaming bastard evil magpie spawn.

Room #1: Room of Becoming

The Room of Becoming is for active things. Music, video, painting, drawing, creating! My philosophy is to create a flexible room where I can sit, stand, lie down, beanbag, sit on couches and generally move from one state to another without pause. This room embodies the element of Fire.

http://i.imgur.com/IBvz8Ph.jpg
The Comfy Chair Zone. That couch was a steal at the price.

http://i.imgur.com/09dEE3C.jpg
Meet Colossus! My brand new xyber-hueg death machine, complete with brand new art tablet and mechanical height-adjustable standing desk! I made no compromises when it came to my workstation.

Room #2: The Rooms of Renewal

The Room of Renewal is for cleansing, refreshing and repair. The bathroom is included in this. The goal is to keep these rooms clean all the time so that whenever I enter I can wipe away the muck and fatigue of the external world. This room embodies the element of Water.

http://i.imgur.com/oV689g3.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/nu2PkTz.jpg
The kitchen! Still incomplete in terms of silverware - I have one plate and one cup - so Monsieur Microwave shall be my chef for the immediate future.

Room #3: The Room of Void

Bed. Clothing. Nothing else. I've lived the past 25 years in one tiny bedroom and had to fit my entire life within five feet of my bed. None of that now! The Room of Void is for sleep and storage and stillness. This room embodies the element of Earth.

http://i.imgur.com/kgMIvWI.jpg

Lovely cotton sheets, they're smooth and breezy. The top half of the bed can lift up so I can store things underneath. If you look closely you can see my douchebag sunglasses.

Room #4: The Room of Being

Emptiness. Open space. Books. Breath. The Room of Being is a room kept as open and spacious as possible, giving me space to exercise and meditate without intrusions on my focus. It's a place to sit and be without distractions. Its deliberate emptiness and openess means that it embodies the element of Air.

http://i.imgur.com/axFLKYi.jpg

As you can see, I don't have my shelving worked out right now, so the Room of Being is currently the Room of Books.

It already feels like home.

Jealous. I can't wait to buy a house. I want my own place so bad.

...And, what? No paint??

I see a lot of white and dark gray, and by a lot I mean ONLY. I would put a little red or orange in your workstation area and/or your couch/fire room. I might do brown, warm or cool gray (not true gray, you got a lot of that already) or maybe blue in the bedroom. I would suggest a video gamer rocker chair for the empty reading room to keep it simple yet comfy. Congrats again man! Super cool.

Houses are super expensive, dude. Furniture is crazy. Paint is gonna come after things like washing machines, pots and pans, etc. But for sure, it is coming. Depending on how forays into trad art go I might even like to paint the walls myself, maybe a bit of a spatter style I dunno.

This is pretty much my shopping list to a T, you have the exact same eye for this I do! The orange pillows are the first step towards a more consistent red/orange/white theme for Becoming. I expect given current finances I'll have it all done by... July, maybe? After that I'm gonna start to think really hard about what I wanna do with the back yard which is just kind of flat brickwork.

Congrats again man! Super cool.

Thanks!

I need to move out of this place ASAP, but it's an uphill climb to buy a home. Renting isn't really feasible though. I'm trying to get the state to help me with a down payment. Hopefully that'll help get me a place.

Ooh, looking nice. Congrats on getting there. Like everyone else, you're making me jelly!

A kitchen that's always clean is a dream of mine too. *sigh*

I like your tree, and I'm used to screeching hell beasts, so I wouldn't mind a few magpies. Besides, I always kinda liked magpies. They look pretty.

I'm still waiting for my home upgrade, which hopefully will happen soon. Since I already know the layout of the place I'm waiting for, I've been carefully mapping out exactly how to fill it with furniture and stuff, but dammit, I can't keep staring at my plans and dreams on the screen! I need the real thing naaao!

Once you learn to cook pretty well, you will find that it gets hard eating out. But this is a good thing, because you save tons of money by cooking at home. Money that can be banked to fuel your pet projects and pony hobbies. :D
