How do you homebrew a creature in Pathfinder?

Can someone walk me through the process? I feel like, reading the instructions on paizo, I'm not getting the full story. The guideline they provide is extremely confusing, it's like they set up more barriers than even 3.5 did.

First rule: Disregard the Paizo rules.
Second rule: Just eyeball it. Build a creature and compare its stats to a creature with a CR you're aiming at. Then adjust accordingly.

Similar to the way you homebrew in 3.5 (just note the differences between 3.5 and Pathfinder). I'm better at 3.5 but it's not that hard to make it Pathfinder compatible.
