Hello fellow playgrounders!

I went through my collections of third party books recently and what I found was crazy. There have been feats upon feats out there, published under the OGL, and I find that many of them are actually pretty good feats. Some give me ideas for future homebrew projects, so I think it may be worthwhile to start listing them for the playground's benefit. There's also another reason behind this list. We all hear how the fighter would need tons of splatbooks full of feats to make a decent build up to the 20th level, don't we? Well, I'm sure there a enough OGL books out there to satisfy any kind of build. For ease of use I listed the feats based on their purpose, and not only based on their tag.

For now, the list is all there is; you won't find any full feat here. But once you know what kind of feat you are looking for, there are two options: either find the feat on a compilation of OGL content (come-on, there are THREE wikis that do that!*), or you could use the list as a tool to help you decide which third party book you are going to buy next. Based on this, the things you can do with these feats is crazy: you could use the feats as inspirations for your future fighter fix(es), or if you are into that kind of things you could use them to homebrew a feat chain. What can be done with these feats is up to you! You could even use the list as a reference point to rate the feats or use them in ways I haven't thought of. Without further ado, I present you the first OGL feat listing!

Could you provide the links to the three OGL compilation wikis? I am only aware of one.

That said, nice resource, gonna trawl through it :)

Done :)

I updated the list with feats from 101 feats. It took a few hours but I think it was worth it. Also, kinda funny that the first bull rush feat I stumble across (Arcane Rush) is intended for spellcasters.

Wow. I applaud you for doing this. There is a lot of 3rd party material available. I'm always asking people to cite when they use feats (and spells and just about everything), and this will help.

Now this is a noble and lofty goal to strive towards. Nice work so far!

I'm willing to help a bit. I have the Kingdom's of Kalamar Player's Guide by Kenzer & Company (although I am a bit shaky as to whether it counts as OGL or not) and Penumbra: Occult Lore by Atlas Games. Would those be helpful in any way?

Sure! If you are willing to do these feats for me, you could list them within the categories and sub-categories I made (based on their benefits) and send to me what you did by private message. If you are unsure about how to classify the feats, just ask and I should be able to help you.

It's funny how it seems many third party companies have no understanding of what Metamagic feats actually are. The biggest offender has to be Prolific Writer from Ink and Quill; it has nothing to do with casting spells (its only effect is to make scroll scribing and spell transcribing faster), but is marked as a Metamagic feat nonetheless. Conversely, 101 Feats had Fire Blood and Wizard's Protective Aura, which are Metamagic feats in everything but the headline.

Other companies, however, seem to have understood the concept of Metamagic feats correctly.

How Open Content Works: read the fine print. The books should state whether or not the content is open and which content is open. Some books are entirely closed content. Usually the art, stories, setting (anything that could be Product Identity), etc. are closed content, but each book is different. In the early days of the OGL (2000 was the first year), companies often didn't know that they had to actually mark which content was open and which wasn't.

Yeah, the Prolific Writer affects the feat Scribe Scroll feat, rather than an actual spell. However, again look at the date. The OGL was new and 3rd parties were just jumping on the OGL bandwagon to get in the market.

As for errors, don't even get me started, as I'll go on a rant for days. WotC had egregious errors in their books (one of the reason I love Pathfinder is that they actually have editors and use them). People who only accept the "core" books often perpetuate the errors (that's why so many errata were printed). Sometimes the rules were just too vague, leading to a lot of heated discussions on gaming boards and an entire column in Dragon Magazine called Sage Advice.

I recommend downloading all the free content, free FAQs, and free errata at WotC in their archives. They updated again so many links other from other sites that link to them give you that lovely 404 error. Their archives are at: http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/dnd.

One reviewer, John Cooper, over at EnWorld.com not only posted his review of many 3.x books, but he also made all the corrections in his reviews. He was my hero for ages. I have his reviews copied for posterity, along with all the corrections. EnWorld has also updated and now my links don't work. [grumble, grumble].

Also, remember a lot of products were D20 rather than just OGC (open gaming content), so when WotC revoked the D20 license to use with 4e, companies had to dump or destroy their stuff. The D20 license was revocable but not the OGL. Companies could change pdfs to make the material Open Gaming compliant but not the printed books. I bought a ton of remaindered gaming books at a huge discount as a result of that.

Also, some companies were just too [expletive deleted] lazy to follow the rules. Anything by Fast Forward Entertainment is sure to have copyright violations in it (and Jim Ward worked for WotC, so he should have known better). Mongoose Publishing is usually pretty clear about what is open. After reading a lot of gaming books, you'll eventually get the hang of which publishers are better than others.

BTW, almost NONE of WotC's material is open content. Zero. Zip. Nada. The online SRD has all the official open content. Lately, WotC has been sending out cease and desist letters to sites online that violate their copyrights. This has shut down sites like D&D Tools.

Conversely, almost everything by Paizo is open content and I love 'em for it.

As for open feats, If you can't figure out if something is open content, PM me and I might be able to suss it out. It's not rocket science, but it can be confusing. And just because it's on the web, don't assume it is open content. When in doubt, cite to a product.

FYI: There is NO open content in the Kingdom of Kalamar Player's Guide. Occult Lore's open content is marked in shaded boxes and the feats are open content. One of the weirdest things I own is Accidents At Birth: Deformities and Deformity Feats by Chris A. Field and published by Louis Porter Designs. It is all open content. You can find it at RPGNow.com.

Thanks for the precisions Debby. I'm not sure which books were published under the D20 license. Is it the same as the D20 System License?

I see what you mean when you say there have been OGL violations. I could even list some examples myself. Perhaps fortunately, the only book I have from Fast Forward Entertainment is the Devil's Player Guide, which (at first glance) doesn't seem to have violated the terms of service. I am aware that WotC did not publish much under the OGL (by definition, the only thing it did is the SRD), but I know players always have an easier time finding the resources they are looking for when it comes from a splatbook or a Dragon article.

Sorry for the mistake, it seems Kingdoms of Kalamar is one of these weirds franchises that had an arrangement with WotC to publish D&D content without using the OGL. Occult Lore is definitely OGC, though; anyone can even find its content on the Grand OGL Wiki.

I own Accidents at Birth: Deformities and Deformity Feats, and peeked at it a few times already. I remember the author has apparently no understanding of how real life genetics works (according to the text, hemophilia is a father-to-son disease), but it's one of the few books that make use of the Deformity feat concept, so this deserves cheering on.

This is a bit off topic so I put it in a spoiler but it is relevant to the discussion

There were two separate licenses. The OGL and the D20 System Trademark License. Though woefully out of date, this may help: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/srdfaq/20040123b. The D20 System Trademark License was retired by WotC in 2008. Only the OGL remains.

This is more current: http://adamjury.com/2015/the-history-current-state-of-ogl-publishing-pathfinder-and-d20.

When you cite to a book (name of book and page number), you can be sure that you are not infringing on copyright or Product Identity. When you start copying material...that's when people get into trouble.

BTW, Not everything has to be open content in a book that contains open content. Only the designated material in Occult Lore is open content. It's stated on page 4. Here is the open content that designates what the open content is:

Occult Lore, like the rest of the Penumbra™ line of D20 System™ supplements, is published under the Open Game License. We hereby identify as Open Game Content any text that is printed inside parchment style
boxes like this one. Note too that there are sometimes entire pages of OGC, identified by a full-page parchment background (e.g., the Appendixes). Text not on the parchment background and artwork are not Open, and may not be reproduced without the publisher’s or artist’s express permission.

As to other open feats, I have a lot of material that I bought from RPGNow and Paizo. I'd bet I can find more open content feats.

I haven't added any of the Pathfinder feats to the list yet, but I thought there was a list for that already (here it is (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats)). Do you think there are elements missing from the list? I don't own much from Paizo, so I'd have trouble checking by myself. Since you seem to already be fond of Paizo, I see no problem with handing this part of my project to you if you think 3.p needs a fuller list of feats.
