Fountains of Bright Crimson

If I should forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its strength.
May my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy.
Psalms 137:5-6

Act I: The Trouble with Tremere.
Anno Domini: 1197, 23rd day of April
(Around 10pm)

Another calm night falls over the holy city of Jerusalem, as it has for many nights since Salah ad-Din had taken it away from the Crusaders and restored it to Islamic rule. Since time immemorial, this city witnessed immense bloodshed and suffered great atrocities, the most recent, during the Siege of Jerusalem when the Army of Christ honored the city where their Savior had died by flooding the streets with blood and corpses. All were lost to the slaughter as they cared little of race, gender, age or religion. The bloodshed was so great that men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reigns while corpses where stacked like cordwood.

No one can explain the reasoning behind this massacre, Kine or Kindred, for even within a city as holy as Jerusalem, the children of Caine still manage to find a way to exert their influence from the shadows as they too play an important role in the Crusades. Kindred were present during the Siege of Jerusalem, and they too played a part in the Week of Blood as Kindred openly waring against one another in the streets of the city, caught in a blood lust so great that they continued to seek slaughter and failed to find shelter when the dreaded sun began to rise.

Almost a hundred years have passed since, and the terror and panic of those days are forgotten as now Jerusalem is a prosperous city, were Jewish and Muslim merchants mingle with Christian Pilgrims in a fragile truce, as the peace agreement made between Salah ad-Din and King Richard I of England is to expire.

It is a calm night over Jerusalem, but it may very well be the city holding its breath, as it awaits yet more blood to be shed freely once more, and it is during this calm night that several figures make their way through the darkness.

================================================== ===========================

Sister Cecilia

It had been a long and wearisome journey, as Sister Cecilia and her companion could only afford the fare to sail to Patra in Greece. From there it was a long trek through Constantinople where she continued through Asia Minor in what some say is the land after which her clan was named after, before heading South through the Levant.

As she had been told by the devout who had accomplished the pilgrimage, one would notice the palm trees before they arrive at the Holy City, hence why pilgrims would cut branches from the palm trees as proof of their pilgrimage. Finally, she sees the walls of Jerusalem. The walls are relatively new, and strong enough to resist all but the most determined of assaults.

As Sister Cecilia and her servant arrive at the New Gate, to find that the gate had been shut for the night. From above the wall, one of the guards noticing her begins to call out in Arabic "Hey you! What are you doing there? Get lost! The gate will remain closed until morning!"

================================================== ================================================== =============

Themistokles

The caravan which Themistokles had escorted from Alexandria were a pleasant enough group from Ethiopia who were heading for Jerusalem and had hired him as a mercenary. The journey was long, yet uneventful as the caravan followed the coast until they reached Palestine and headed their way up North to Jerusalem. The Ethiopians set their camp near the base of Mt. Zion for the night and pay Themistokles the exact amount which was agreed for his service, relieving him of his duty towards them.

Having finally reached Jerusalem, Themistokles, riding upon his horse and with his servant in tow approaches David's Gate, to naturally find it shut for the night. There seems to be a guard manning the wall, although he has yet to notice Themistokles, instead leaning wearily against his spear.

================================================== ================================================== =============

Edouard

The journey from Paris to Jerusalem is indeed a long one, but Edouard had planned ahead and arranged for his transport across the Mediterranean. Upon arriving in Palestine, Edouard came in contact with the smuggler that would get him into Jerusalem. Simon assured the Tremere that all that was required was a simple bribe and Edouard could enter the city posing as a merchant of books and scrolls. No one would bat an eyelash at a merchant in a hurry to meet with his benefactor.

Leading Edouard, they approach the Gate of St. Stephan, and Simon hails the guard "Hey! Mustafa! Mustafa! Its me!"

The guard hails back at Simon, clearly recognizing the scoundrel, but before he can begin opening the gate, he notices something as he says "The gate is closed for the night! None can enter. You can peddle your wear in the morning." however, it would appear that the guard is saying this to what would appear to be a caravan approaching.

Clearly the guard did not want to attract attention by letting too many people come in at the same time.

================================================== =========================================

Neith

Being from the region, and having traveled it before, Neith found her journey to Jerusalem to be pretty much uneventful if even boring. Heeding her Sire's warnings she avoided Acre and the deserts where the Lupines were prone to attack unfortunate Kindred who might be passing by. Her comfort was provided as well by her servants who make up the caravan with which she will set up shop in Jerusalem.

Everything had been planned in advance, and all was going as foreseen. Neith had arranged so that her entrance in Jerusalem be as easy as possible, as she headed towards the Gate of St. Stephan where she would bribe the guard called 'Mustafa' and be allowed into the city. It was to be as simple as that.

As the caravan arrives at the walls of Jerusalem, Neith can see the guard motioning to them "The gate is closed for the night! None can enter. You can peddle your wear in the morning." How odd... the guard should have known of her arrival. It is then that she notices what seems like another pair of merchants with books standing near the gate.

Clearly the guard did not want to attract attention by letting too many people come in at the same time.

The tall figure approaches that gate, wrapped in a cloak while riding a black horse that was clearly bred for war. That and the fact that he has with him an attendant that may or may not be a slave? Going to be difficult to feign poverty.

"Guess I got here a bit late huh?" Themistocles chuckles, and after a moment of consideration the Brujah states, "Look, I'll just cut to the chase. I don't want to be stuck outside for the night. The desert can get pretty cold. Is there any way I can convince you to let me in? I can make it worth your while."

Neith

The trip had bored her immensely - her handmaidens while not entirely worthless for conversation were merely mortal with no understanding of higher matters, they believed her sickly and that her pale complexion lengthy sleep pattern and avoidance of the sun were symptoms that she was not long for the world likely in the last stages of some ailment .. those concerns alone might mean she would have to be done with them soon.

Tebnit however had been worth speaking to, while her exact nature was kept from him do avoid betrayal of secrets he knew that she was more than she appeared and his own power was tied to hers - this despite the unnatural feelings of longing, protection, love and a host of other emotions that went through him. She remembered what being a ghoul was like so did not begrudge him some idiosyncrasies. He would be the one to speak on her behalf for this night to mortals.

Noting the scene in front of her she sighed - she could afford to stay out for the night and be brought in tomorrow Tebnit would meet with Anen and she could wake in a safe haven prior to introduction - but she would prefer to get into the city tonight.

Waving Tebnit over while sitting in her carriage, she kept her voice low between them "no need for a scene but it would be preferable to get into night, if needed merely pay off the interlopers, having a scholar in our service might be useful if Anen has not secured one" she frankly assumed her brother had more pressing matters "if needed you might mention that one of the household of Anen of Sidon of the bloodline of the Lord of Sidon wishes entry and that the Captain will hear of the guards vigilance and etiquette" her brother was in fact such but the connection was weaker than the implication - but if he had done his job the captain would be informed of both the delay and the guards manners for better or worse, "but again there is no need for a scene if needed you can escort me in tomorrow while I rest and meet with my brother to arrange accommodation", always good to ensure that ghouls knew when you didn't care overly to prevent them taking umbrage on ones behalf.

With that she returned fully inside the carriage to listen to the tuts and complaints of two of her ladies about her talking to the less than noble man, the third had been taken with him and merely blushed at the complaints. She nearly sighed as she allowed Tebnit to do his own work guiding the carriage to the gate, focusing her thoughts on the map carving she had brought with her.

The man was not overly imposing but had that hard edge of a killer on him, and he had not shaken the look of living on the streets for a time from himself - armed and lightly armoured he would give most people pause - but he was trying to look as friendly as possible, no fighting skill would open the gate here this was a time for words.

These damn provincials...He had certainly not traveled on his own personal Crusader's trail from France to be stopped right at the door of his destination.

Edouard is dressed in the fine robes of a European master scholar, black trimmed with blue and long open sleeves. A cap with golden tassel sits upon his blonde hair, held in a tight braid. A white and gold stole over his shoulders signifies his high rank.

He glances over his shoulder at the approaching caravan and then back at the imbecilic face of the guard and studies it for a moment...then leans in close before the other wagons can come into earshot and presses a coin into the guard's hand.

"If you expect to receive the rest of your "convenience fee" then open the postern door and let me through. Simon, bring the cart by the library in the morning or whenever the gate opens, Ziad will know what to do with it."

The short man in fine clothes with the jewish cast to his features might grouse at being stuck with the cart for the evening but knew better than to complain out loud before getting his client into the city.

Neith (Tebnit)

There was a time when if Tebnit been told that he would one day be taking orders from a female child he would have likely gutted the accuser for insulting him - those days were long ago now, whatever his mistress was she was certainly no normal child, and while a part of him was horrified at her existence the larger part of him was to wrapped up in mixed feelings of admiration, love, respect, honour, caring and nearly ever other positive emotion - and a few darker ones of the same - that he didn't pay the smaller part much mind any more. It didn't hurt that the benefits were good, wine, women, a warm bed, solid armour, a good blade and the feeling of power that he felt in his veins even now.

Approaching the gate with the carriage he looked to the guard "Mustafa I assume - I think there was an agreement, yes" smiling "but it looks like you had more than one, yes" shrugging as he looked at the other men with the books "tell you what we will purchase some of your stock to compensate you from late starting tomorrow and for not getting in tonight, sound good?" turning to Mustafa "and Captain Azhar will hear how you helped out a friend of his - while we forget the delay, might be good for a handy shift some night for you or more coin in the future, everyone wins" he smiled widely some of his teeth missing, but most of them healthy.

Sister Cecilia

Just as the child Neith, Sister Cecilia is also riding among a caravan, though hers is made up partly of pilgrims to the Holy Land and there are no handmaidens to gossip with. Just like Neith, she is also believed by those she travels with to be stricken with a rare condition that forces her out of the sun. But her bodyguard is not a ghoul, nor is he remotely ignorant of whom he travels with and protects.

Sir Christopher is a Knight of the Hospitaller, dedicated to God to protect those who travel to the Promised Land. One who has, in this particular instance, given his vow to protect the Sister Cecilia in her journeys, knowing full well her true nature. He does not know how long he will be required to do so, but trusts in his lord to guide his fate.

Sister Cecilia sighs slightly as the guard yells down. She understands nothing of what he says, although it is obvious that his intent is not to allow them entrance. She peeks out from the carriage, allowing the others she travels with a rare glimpse at her pale features. "What is it that he says, Sir Christopher? Why is he denying us entrance?"

"It seems we have arrived later than expected. Perhaps I can convince him to allow us entrance, I am known here." Sir Christopher says, and begins to ride forward.

Sir Christopher, Sister Cecilia's Ally

Sir Christopher rides forward, sitting atop his Arabian stallion, and looks up at the guard. "I am Sir Christopher of the Knights Hospitaller. I am certain you know of me and my sister, the good Lady Christina Carmack? I ask that you please allow me and my ward entrance. She is sick and needs immediate attention."

Themistokles

The guard upon noticing Themistokles openly talking about getting bribed, quickly looks around and hisses "Quiet you fool! You want me to lose my head?" he says looking around the wall to make sure that no one else happened to overhear the foreigner. Fortunately for the Brujah, none had overheard his open attempt at bribery.

"How many of you are there?" replies the guard, speaking as loudly as he dared.

================================================== =======================

Cecilia

The guard a top the wall shakes his head "Never heard of her. I'm sure she'll survive until morning." Why would a Muslim guard know of a Christian nun? Sir Christopher would have to find another way to get themselves into the city.

================================================== =================================================

Edouard & Neith

Moustafa looks at Edouard and Tebnit and tells them "Look, I don't have an issue opening the gate for a few, but an entire caravan? I will likely loose my head. No amount of money is worth that. I'll let two people in tonight, avoiding to attract much attention. You can decide amongst yourselves whose business is pressing enough that you can't wait till the gates open at dawn."

Oh lord above, it’s talking to me…he turns toward Tebnit and speaks in accented Arabic, his voice conveying what he thinks is aloof politeness.

“Thank you for the offer but I am not some glue-stained peddler selling hastily scrawled dirty limericks to wine soaked friars…these books are part of a collection being delivered to the library.” He straightens his robes and looks between Tebnit and Mustafa as the guard makes his offer.

“I’ve urgent business with the head librarian, I will enter now and my associate will bring the cart in the morning.” He looks to the other caravan and its chosen representative waiting expectantly to see who their delegate will be.

Neith (Tebnit)

Tebnit took the smile of his face and eyed the man - he would try to remember him. He had been given a simple task and made a fair offer and was being rebuked was annoying. "Hardly the time of night to be waking a librarian is it, your talk would likely go better in the morning" he grumbled, turning to the Moustafa "look the merchant caravan - in its entirety - is owned by kin to the Lord of Sidon, and one of the household is present within and ailing - a child at that, else I would not be pushing to enter tonight, you really don't want grief with the nobility do ya?.

Neith
She listened carefully to the conversation satisfied with Tebnit attempt, the man was not a socially proficient creature but he was good at his job and fairly bright - she snarled as he reached the end of his message however. Drawing attention to her ailment could be seen as allowing sickness into the city and even during the day they would now likely wish to examine her. Composing herself she left the carriage "please stay here the night air will do me good" she stated to the ladies as she departed.

She had all the appearance of the fragile thing she was many decades ago, pale skin and bright red hair - a mark of Set's favour some said, and likely what has saved her life all those years ago - if she had aged normally she might have been a striking woman rather than a delicate child. Her attire was however markedly improved from decades ago - the finest silks trailing to the ground. Ignoring the scholar she focused on the guard her voice carrying in the night "apologies sir my protector is correct I am tired - but not ill, I would ask that myself and this carriage and my protector are allowed in - and your courtesy will be remembered by my family - perhaps the head of the house might even offer you a more lucrative position or speak on your behalf to your commander. Or perhaps we could speak to your commander tonight instead?" she queried. The man clearly didn't want his boss to know about his dealings and was greedy enough to have gotten himself into this situation so with luck he would yield to logic - but with the treat of illness being mentioned she would not rely on luck alone.
Normally she would avoid using her abilities in this direct manner but her ghoul had forced the issue for her now - and she was suddenly in a hurry. Tebnit was normally strong willed enough and so if she could affected the scholar his man or the guard it would likely benefit her getting in - all three ideally so there would be no complaints should the guard keep the other two out for her carriage to more forward - and if it worked particularly well she might even bring the Scholar in, it might be useful to have one if she needed to access the library.

Presence (Awe) (diff 7): [roll0]

Not sure what I should roll for the actual argument so going with Manipulation and Subterfuge for trying to pull on his heartstrings (for a tired child), greed (for appeasing a noble family) and fear (of his boss becoming involved) without any of that coming across.

Themistokles

The guard looks around once more to make sure no one might be eavesdropping. "One hundred dinars per head, fifty for the horse." he once again whispers as loud as he dares. Its slightly extensive for a bribe, and Themistokles had already paid the tax implemented on Christians who travel to the Holy Land.

Edouard & Neith

As Neith uses her Vampiric ability over the guard, his disposition seems to change "I suppose we can't let a child stay outside the night can we? Fine... you can come in with a guardian, but I still can't allow more than three to come in. Next thing you know people will be asking me to allow an entire army in. The rest will have to wait till morning."

((It is possible he would know, as he guards the entrance to the Christian portion of the city, according to your own map. And as Sister Christina has attended to ill and wounded Muslims, it would further be possible that he, or one of his family, have been under her care. :smallyuk:))

Sir Christopher looks up to the guard, studying and remembering his face. She will survive, but this fool will not live long after Christopher enters. "Very well then. Be it on your head that you do not allow us entrance this minute." he replies in Arabic, then leads the caravan away.

((I do always tire of these little "you arrive at night, so the guards won't let you in." sections. You'd think someone who's been hiding in a caravan for days while travelling over a harsh desert would know to wait until morning. :smallsigh:))

Neith

She smiled to the guard offering him the slightest curtsy, turning her head to Tebnit "please can retrieve the welcome gift?" she wanted that carving for the show - and with the guard under her power and sympathetic to her cause it should not be an issue, "tell the ladies you will return in the morning to collect them - or that someone will be sent". That done she looked at the at the scholar and his man - she was well aware that even those that kept there logic may be more prone to agreeing with someone utilising the power granted by Set, and that some mortals became enamoured by such to the point of wishing to continue to associate with the barer of the power - something that many an incautious Follower of Set had found problematic at precisely the wrong time. She might well offer the guard a job, or turn him into a snack for causing her this issue - but eliminating a scholar who had travelled so far and his man would likely unwanted grief.

She made a note of both there faces still smiling politely "I and my protector will enter - we offer apologies for our part in our joint delay".

Neith (Tebnit)

He wasn't sure what he had done - but he knew she would have only gotten involved if she felt something had went wrong, hopefully she would be in a good enough mood that she would forget about it later. Moving to the carriage he collected the sculpture and threw a wink to Anne - the girl had been good company for him during the day - who blushed furiously. "the young lady is eager to be inside the town and we have secured passage - you will wait here and I or another associate will escort you inside tomorrow morning", as he left he beaconed over one of the guards in the employ of the house "myself and the girl are heading inside - watch the stuff and the people" - handing the man a few coins "what I owe you from the gambling two nights ago in case ya get new tasks before we meetup inside".

Neith
Seeing Tebnit return she was eager to be inside once the gate opened - offering the guard a smile as Tebnit provided a small bonus for his service that night. Neith liked money - but it was a tool to her, the merchants would restock the coffers and offering a better life to the down and out would provide workers far and wide, some loose change was always worth some good will in the long or short term - even if her servant would benefit from it more than her - still she kept the gift of Set up until they were well inside. If no other delays occurred the next stop would be the Holy Sepulcher catacombs to present herself.

As Sister Cecilia and Sir Christopher turn back towards the caravan, they notice a pair of men walking towards the gate, one old and one young, yet both seem of Northern European stock. They seem to be wearing chain-mail armor, although they lack any insignia. The older one eyes Sir Christopher and says " My brother, you will not go far with these heathens no matter how many you may save. All they care about is money." the knight shows an insignia showing two knights riding on a horse. He speaks with a German accent. Both Sister Cecilia and Sir Chritopher would recognize it as the emblem of the the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, more commonly known as the Knight Templar.

"What is wrong with your Sister?" asks the younger knight clearly concerned and speaking with a French accent. As he speaks Sister Cecilia detects the faintest of smell. She can't describe it, but despite the fact that she subconsciously wishes to inhale the scent deeply it suddenly fills her soul with a lingering feeling of loneliness, loss and regret the likes she has never experienced before.

The scholar folds his arms into his robe as the theatrical Tableau plays out before him. A sickly child, a gruff guardian, and he the enraptured audience watching the lovely waif and hoping she is given the benefit of the guard's generous...hmm...

A partitioned section of Edouard's mind studies the scene...the sudden change in the attitude of those about the child including himself. Coming into his unlife through the quagmire of Clan Tremere has left him alert to the the various means of mental manipulation. Ahhh, and done to a child bo less?. Fate does love her jests...

His voice is syrup "Dear child, do run along and be safe. I shall be on my way inside shortly." His smile is genuine amusement though his eyes have the look of one disecting a specimen. He watches the child and her protectors, taking note of them.

It was fortunate that Themistokles had a fair degree of wealth, though he wondered how the peasants were supposed to be able to afford all this. Then again, they would probably arrive during the day.

He gives a thumbs up to the guard, and quietly prepares some coins, concealed from within his cloak. No need to let the guy know just how much he's actually carrying.

(Assuming there's no issue, the guard gets 275 Dinar)

The physician we talked to said it sounded of an ancient plague called 'Phthisis'. Have you heard of this?" Sir Christopher answers, before turning his attention to the Knight Templar.

Sir Christopher bows his head to the elder knight. "Brother, I had hoped to arrive earlier, but we were delayed when one of our horses collapsed. After paying for the beast we have now, we have no further funds to be spending on bribery. I had hoped that our charity alone might be remembered by them, and allow us access. She noted the scholars interest his smile did not reach his eyes, and his eyes seemed to hold a detailed curiosity rather than the more standard reactions. That could be an issue if he followed up - of course it may be merely that he was foreign and unfamiliar with the practices of local nobility and her direct involvement would likely be at odds with what he had studied. Still it could be an issue if he followed up. Worst would be if he had specialist training in resisting and noting manipulation as pulling at his heart strings might have tipped him off due to having a more intense reaction than he would expect of himself - were that the case Tebnit might have to hire some locals to make the problem go away.

All this was an issue for another time however, nodding to Mustafa she looked around for Tebnit fearfully - an act on her part and a stalling tactic - but she was confident in her power over the guard at least. At Tebnit's return he allowed the scholar through the gate first and took the second place himself - if there was an ambush to grab her for ransom better for it to be him to activate it rather than her and ready to thwart it, and the scholar's man tried anything she had her own guards within earshot to deal with him.

He confers briefly with Simon, making arrangements to have the cart of books brought to the library, but first plucking a selection of tomes for himself just in case some other delay occurred. These are slid into his satchel along with his other belongings.

He was discomfited with the encounter, he had no wish to attract any sort of attention to himself while he conducted his business here. And now not even into the city he stumbles upon another Kindred. What hornet’s nest had Trigus sent him to?

After another brief look at the child and her entourage, he bows to the assemblage and strides purposefully through the door and into the city.

"I have heard of the name Christopher Carmack. If the sister traveling with him is ill, she should go to the hospital as soon as she can."

"If she truly has the plague, then she would be better off at the leper colony."

"We are not doctors. Let the Knights Hospitallier deal with her condition as they see fit."
"We do not have enough money to bribe the guard for all of us."

"Then I believe that the Sister should take our place."

"But we shall miss the liturgy of Good Friday. Remember your condition... and age you may never attend it again... what of your vow?"

"My friend, have we not sworn a solemn oath before the shard of the True Cross to aid the pilgrims? The Lord will forgive me for my failure when I shall soon be facing his fierce judgment. Give them the money, and you shall find yourself rewarded by God for your act of mercy."

The older knight shakes his head "Pray for us all Brother, for these are dark times. I am Otto vom Orden der Bruder vom Deutschen Haus St. Mariens in Jerusalem. This young man was once my squire who will one day inherit my sword. Today he goes by the name of Sir Dieudonne de Saint Sebastien-sur-Loire of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon."

Proceeding into the town she took a closer look at Mustafa at the gate, now that the immediate danger of being looked out was past she was thinking more logically - his job would be effectively perfect for one of the so called Kindred, food delivered itself to the gate, night-time visitors could be noted, no one questioned why he slept during the day. Yes it made sense to her ... of course the flip side of that was that not ever guard on the wall could be assumed to be dead, but still one known to be corrupt and on duty constantly enough that two different groups could arrive at once was cause for review.

She kept a smile on her face as she noted his complexion, his chest raising and falling and if it matches his words, if his eyes moved as the should or if he didn't blink at all.

Her review done she than considered the scholar, he had been adamant that he be allowed in and Tebnit was correct about the morning, a head librarian would likely not be staying up late to meet a guest that could easily be delayed by any number of things, particularly one who had travelled so far. But if he was like herself that would explain matters, and also account for his intense review of her earlier - certainly one more familiar with the powers of the dead would be more likely to note one used on themselves.

It was worth following up with at the least "I beg you hold a moment sir scholar - the streets might be unsafe, would you care to walk together for a piece. My family might be interested in offering you work in this, a learned individual can be worth knowing", if he looked back she would curtsy smile widely in gratitude "though of course speaking to one of my stature might be beneath your knowledge, there is often safety in numbers" smiling "I will be meeting someone near centre of the Christian quarter of your library is located near there", she wondered at his reaction the location.

If nothing else the Father Paliuro would likely be curious about a lone unguarded scholar entering the city late at night - and the information might buy her some limited good will, even if the scholar was exactly what he seemed.

"And I am Sir Christopher Carmack of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem." Sir Christopher answers. "I am honored to meet the both of you."

A hard coughing can be heard from within the carriage, followed by the Sister's weak voice. "Sir Christopher, a word please."

As Christopher steps to the carriage, Sister Cecilia whispers to him what she has overheard. His eyes cannot hide the surprise at what she overheard. He listens further, then turns to the pair of Knights Templar. "Sir, apologies. But the Sister's ears have gained in strength even as her body weakens. She wishes for me to offer entrance along with us. Perhaps they will allow three, where four would be too many? Or, barring that, you can have my place."

"Hmm?"

He turns toward the child, curious that she wished to speak to him.

"I do so happen to be heading to the Christian Quarter, I'd be glad for some company..." He gives an amused smile "and from such a well spoken and polite child no less. Tell me, what is your name my dear? And what might you wish of a humble scholar?" His robes mark him as a learned master so humility may not be quite his baliwick.

Taking stock of the numbers he begins to feel somewhat uneasy...Did he give something of himself away? Damn but he never was much for mummery...

"Excellent" she beamed, offering a curtsy.

"Perhaps in some more years I will learn my place better than to concern myself with matters above me, but I will admit a limited fascination with the Christian and Islamic faiths - one little more than a millennium old, the other less ... and yet this city is far older than both" pausing "only the Hebrew faith may be as old, though I am unsure on its inception I admit - but my understanding is that such was never widespread particularly in comparison to the old pagan faiths who I have been led to believe are disappearing. A scholar's understanding of this comparative rapid change would be interesting?", shrugging "one would almost suspect a secular motive to ensure comparative beliefs across the region as large as an empire to limit regional differences".

She had met beings that pre-dated both religions herself - though such meetings were rare - and such beings tended to worship just such a pagan deity, Set. The implication of a secular motive rather than a spiritual one was merely a manner of assisting the man to being more open to the worship of Set and others sought to control him ... although personally she saw the immense benefit in the organisation beliefs of others.

"I believe that my kin might fund a study into such matters relating to the old holy places to see how the potential lies of the pagans were dis-proven, why such knowledge might also place the current destructive conflict at an end", and if such a secret revealed to her what had generated the condition within Acre and how to make use of such power - well that was merely her due.

Suddenly catching herself "my apologies - my maids would scold me furiously for my mindless behaviour, I am Lady Neith of the House of Aman, vassal family to Lord Reginald of Sidon, I would know your name also, please?" she beamed.

Neith (Tebnit)

He was not pleased, she was often somewhat erratic but this seemed more than that and that something was eating at him. Her words were the like that would attract attention to her directly rather than to a proxy like himself which was not her usual style - was it a game, she would kill the scholar or steal his will? Either seemed risky to him.
And what was she on about faiths and pagans - she had never mentioned such to him other than to deny that any of them held full truth within them and that the individual should find there own truths.

Testing his sword he prepared himself for action should something go wrong here - the scholar who was in a hurry earlier was now happy to converse with a child, even a noble, was also troubling but he couldn't place his finger on why exactly. There was something noteworthy about the man - he could tell that.

This particular infidel, in typical infidel fashion is going to a church. Rather than a good proper mosque. Oh those whacky infidels.

There's a priest or at least someone acting like a priest he needs to talk to.

"Keep an eye out Gabra. I'm not expecting trouble, but as I look around it dawns on me that with all of these alley ways and buildings? This would be an ideal time for an assassin to strike."

"The history of this region will require more time than this stroll would allow, but your theory is sound. While religions on various form have held this city since the earliest days, it is also a strategic site located in the path of a natural caravan route to the further east. Further, the kingdoms of the Hebrews extended throughout the region during the height of their power, as firm as hand in it's time as Islam and the Church now..."

What follows will be a length discussion of the various empires that have controlled Jerusalem that will be either fascinating or mind numbing dull depending on the listener's academic bent.

"...which brings us to the present day. Dear me I have held forth for a time now. Forgive an old professor his lecture"

Years as a ghoul had served her well in spotting the tell tale signs of the children of Set and there kin and this man was displaying them, breathing was deliberate when not speaking, movements betrayed no hint of being uncomfortable at night in the darkness, breath in the still air did not carry the hint of food, nor did the body have an odour such as Tebnit's, the pale skin ... any individual items would be overlooked but all together they were evidence enough for her.

She listened attentively as he spoke - was that hesitation before his name, perhaps to conceal his true linage or and history - or perhaps merely he was used to another name in his travels. Still some of those kindred known as Charlatans would lie for the sake of lying - and others besides them if she were honest.

Still the man knew his history she would give him that - the dates he recalled, and the conquests he listed were accurate and stated with an authority of one familiar with the topic, so regardless of his name his profession was unlikely to be complete fabrication.

She did not interrupt as they made there way into the Christian quarter - "fascinating" she stated at the end, but her tone would give cause as to what she actually was referring to. "I thank you for your lesson professor Martin LaValette - and I may follow up with the University of Paris in relation to your work, one cannot be overly cautious in who they deal with after all, but your knowledge is plain to see" noting there location "well it seems we are close to Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is my first destination within this city tonight" and where Anen should have someone waiting for her to ensure safe haven.

Making a decision she turned her head to look at the man "so the query I would have is, as we entered together through the gateway and moved through this region together it would be viewed by many who watch the comings and goings of those active at night that we are likely linked in purpose. Would you thereby agree that we might avoid hassle by confirming the association by continuing to walk together - or would you prefer to attend your business alone while I converse with my protector before proceeding" it was an incredibly round about method of saying she knew what he was and asking if he wished to be seen as associated to her, the benefits of association were risky for both of them without knowing more about the other - unless he was planted here to attract her attention, but the cost of isolation in society could be much worse.

Sir Christopher smiles to the pair. "I believe that settles it. And I have to agree. I could not think of a better man to accompany the Sister inside. I trust you with her protection, Sir." and he bows his head in respect to the elder knight, then offers him his coin back. "And thank you."

Sister Cecilia coughs twice more into the handkerchief, spitting out another drop of blood in case Sir Otto takes a better look inside. "Thank you, Sir Otto. You have been very kind to me. This is where Sir Christopher will be looking for me, correct?"

Sir Otto nods at Cecilia. He escorts her through the city, passing South by the Tower of David and then East through the Street of David. In the distance, Cecilia sees the Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock crowning it. The pair pass into the Jewish Quarter of the city. Many Jews give side-ward glances at the elderly knight and the nun passing by, but Sir Otto seems unphased. Finally they reach at the hospital.

The German knight bows at Cecilia and says "And here we part ways. May the Lord grant you his mercy now that you have completed your pilgrimage. Remember this old knight and pray for my sins."

Edouard & Neith

As the trio walk South of St. Stephan's gate, following the Street of St. Stephan towards the Church of the Holy Sepulcher they notice that although it is night, there is a lot of activity. Merchants are still in their stalls, trying to sell the remaining of their wares before closing for the night, and there seems to be a high number of religious pilgrims. Although they are walking through the Christian Quarter of the city, the amount of pilgrims exceeds both their expectations.

As Edouard and Neith begin to prod one another, both trying to measure one another, they reach the point where the Street of the Holy Sepulcher intersects with the Street of St. Stephan. The moment they step foot, both Kindred all of a sudden feel extremely uncomfortable, and an odd sensation that both have not felt since the days before their embrace; they both feel ill.

Looking around, they see a sign in Latin, Arabic and Hebrew which says "Via Dolarosa". On one of the buildings is a plate depicting Jesus Christ falling in the Third Station of the Cross.

He hadn't really expected an answer, he was mostly convinced of his own suspicions. Another visitor to the city, requiring a smuggler to get in...yes perhaps this was a serendipitous...

He staggers as they step onto the Via Dolorosa, reaching out to steady himself on the nearest wall. Gritting his teeth against the roaring in his ears his eyes land on the sign and utters a stream of curses in French. After collecting himself he steps onto the road, glancing to look at his companion. He's studied the mysteries in enough detail to have an idea what's going on, how is his companion affected?

Her smile vanished immediately as she stepped onto the road - her eyes darting quickly around for a few seconds before she gathered herself, her skin was noted in its coldness the after taste of her most recent meal appeared in her mouth but rather than the pleasant expected taste it was rancid and stale, almost like tasting dust. Removing a silk cloth from a pocket she hid her face in mockery of wiping away spittle - but behind it her teeth were on full display and a snarl was locked in her throat lower than even she could really hear but the feeling was present nonetheless, this seemed like an attack to her.

Her first thought was to blame her companion - perhaps this was a blood borne power, but he seemed affected also - or doing a convincing impression of such, Tebnit was looking confused and worried - and the rest of the street would make this a poor place for an attack so she could relax a bit even if she was ill at ease and feeling sickly.

Reflecting it was not emotion - this was something physical or mental, that meant two likely causes - the Madmen or the Charlatans. Yes others might might have such powers but they didn't operate so randomly in her admittedly limited experience to target two unknowns for fun, unless the Saracens has been paid for this - a worrying thought.

Controlling herself "Tebnit extra care from here" he stepped closer immediately, turning to the scholar "I feel we might wish to proceed with haste" glancing around "I will be proceeding inside now if you would care to join me, else you may wish to wait some minutes", it was not the offer made earlier but if this was the first warning of some scourge she would not been seen to ignore it.

The sooner she was in the catacombs and acknowledged the happier she hoped she would be.

{Sister Cecilia and Sir Otto}

Sister Cecilia keeps her gaze at Sir Otto's feet, her hands folded into the sleeves of her dress, and removing them only twice as they make their way through the Jewish quarter. Both times to cough again into the handkerchief, but most times she makes very little noise aside from "breathing".

Once they arrive, she makes small curtsy and says, "May the Lord bless you, good sir. You will be in my prayers from this day forward. I am forever in your debt." she then turns and intends to make her way into the hospital, to wait for Sir Christopher.

{Sir Christopher}

Sir Christopher stays with the caravan. He has been worried about Sister Cecilia since she and Sir Otto left his sight. He looks over to the young knight, wondering how he felt to be left outside while his elder escorted the nun inside. Nothing to be done for it, Sir Otto was the one who offered, and it was necessary.

Christopher makes his way to his horse and removes the sleeping roll. He can at least make the night more comfortable for them. "Sir Dieudonne, would you perhaps like to share a fire with me this night?" he offers as he removes a bundle of sticks from the carriage to start a small fire with.

There is a long moment of indecision before he steps in through the doorway alongside Neith. He couldn't even walk through the gate without being spotted by another kindred, one who'd likely note his absence in presenting to the lord of the city. Better to have done with it.

Themistokles

The Brujah follows the Street of David, passing by the Tower of David until he turns North, following the Road of St. Stephan. Soon he finds what is unmistakably the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The Church has been destroyed and rebuilt several time in Jerusalem's violent past, however the structure that Themistokles sees, is the largest and most elaborate structure of them all, close to rivaling the Temple Mount in both scope and grandeur.

The doors are open, and there seems to be a crowd gathered outside. Inside the Church is filled with worshipers as Themistokles recognizes the sorrowful dirges that is sung during liturgy for Good Friday that is being sung in Greek.

(Perception + Alertness roll, difficulty 8 to open below)

Within the crowd inside the church, you notice an odd sight. Despite the fact that the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was given to the Greek Orthodox by Saladin, inside the church you notice a Catholic priest praying as well. He seems to fit the description given of Father Paliuro Rustucci.

As Themistokles is born Greek Orthodox, he knows well that according to tradition the epitaph containing an effigy of Jesus Christ will be carried outside the church with all the faithful following it.

Yeah, I know these are ruins but this is the only picture of the hospital I could find to give you an idea.

Cecilia

As they part ways with Sir Otto, Cecilia is left in front of the hospital run by the Knights Hospitallier. The hospital was built by the Knights to accommodated the countless German pilgrims and crusaders who could neither speak the local language nor Latin. Made of stone and wood, the hospital is sturdy enough and the doors are open. Inside Cecilia notices that the Knights are quite busy, what with the influx of Pilgrims due to Easter.

With that, Themistokles walks into the church of Sepulcher, shaking slightly as he does so.

And visibly more so the moment he steps inside. It seems that he's having a fair degree of difficulty.

Still the man walks near one of the priests, kneels down, and begins praying.

While she had respect for great Set and in fact any other of the other gods and would regard herself as one of the faithful she had never been much for the ritual of even sensible religions - sure if a god was in front of you and said kneel and pray it was likely sensible to kneel and pray, but if the god was somewhere else concerned with other matters than it seemed one should concern themselves with other matters also, the Abrahamic faiths always baffled her in there adherence to bizarre ritualistic behaviour revering long dead mortals - or more accurately witches, or ghouls if her suspicions about these founders were correct.

Her voice low "my understanding is that this is one of those three day fasting and praying exercises" shrugging "but you are likely right - it would not surprise me if they play pass the epitaph if only to simply alleviate boredom".

"I will make arrangements later tonight", nodding to the priest leaving with large man, "there is who I need to see - and as he is leaving it would be best to follow him", looking to her Ghoul "eyes down, stand back when we meet, respect is key".

The large man may be a a protector, advisor or servant of some kind she eyed him carefully trying to determine his nature and were he one of the walking dead also, if he were not she would have to be careful in her approach to certain topics in line with the The Silence of Blood.

"I beg your forgiveness, a lot of the people we care here are German pilgrims who do not speak Latin nor the local dialects. How can I be of service?"

The Priest leads the Brujah to the side of the Church. Once they reach a door, Father Paliuro does a series of knocks. After a few moments, the door opens. "This way. We can discuss these serious matters in privacy." as he motions Themistokles to enter the Church once again.

Truely if she could get his permission to remain in the city - and present her gift - she would be happy to leave him to his other work, she could meet others at court when she was settled.

She curtsied to the Father and what she assumed was his man - he had ignored Tebnit in favour of Martin LaValette, was that a jibe at the Ghoul or merely that the rougher looking man looked and acted the part of guard where the scholar's dress might match her own more closely.

"No Father I am not lost - nor have I been recently, and while the scholar is good company he is not but distinct kin at best - as I suppose all people are", not meeting his eyes she raised her own to his chin, "however I have been told that you know the way of this city - and that for general politeness and but also hospitality I should seek you out to ensure that I would also be known within it" she finished, maintaining the silence of the blood was important - while clearly both men were Kindred - although such was only told by the Prince due to his lack of sweat shine or smell and the lack of trobbing of the veins in his neck - prying ears could be problematic and pointing out the flaws of others was not an endearing trait, better to pretend she though they might be Kine.

To be blunt she would as well away from this place sooner rather than later and be about her own business, but protocol demanded that she present herself if she was to operate her without fear of censure and so protocol would be followed - even if he would likey request her presence for a more formal discussion on his lineage and purpose.

"I have also had my man bring you a gift as a token of my esteem", she gestured Tebnit forwards who removed the slab wrapped in silk from his holding and presented it, eyes downcast - whatever liberties Neith would grant him he knew that should be cause offence her the punishment would be most likely harsh.

Themistokles gives a serious look at the two who had just suddenly appeared. Not that he's in any position to judge really. He smirks before turning to what has assumed to be the leader of the region.

"I had assumed I'd be talking to you in private. I need to evaluate the best way to handle the rest of this." He strokes at his chin. "First of all. I am Themistokles Hygino of Dominic of Samal. Though we are no longer on speaking terms. " (OOC broken links so couldn't find the others) "I feel as though I have little I can offer in terms of gifts that would not offend. I have weapons, but you are likely a pacifist. Although I have some books on me. Let me know if any of these are of interest."

This man seemed quite selfless. And would be unlikely to accept anything if given the choice to refuse. And he had actually planned on giving these to another. But there was another thought that came to mind.

"If I'm to be honest, I had planned to give these to Etheria."
How would Themistokles feel if the positions were reversed? He'd want to know this too.
"But I'm sure she wouldn't mind. If any are of interest, feel free to have it. While I'm sure that you have access to many books in the church, I bet those aren't yours are they?"

The books themselves include a history of Ancient Greece, a Catholic and Orthodox Bible, the Quran, The Torah, Two books on Philosophy (French and Latin), and an Arabic book on Mathematics.

"I've read all of them except for the Torah. One of these days I might get around to it, but I'd need to learn Hebrew first."

"I see." The Priest nods at the three as he pushes the door open into the church "Please, follow me and we can discuss these delicate matters away from prying ears." He then walks back into the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. If the three Kindred look, they will notice that Father Paliuro is leading them into the Church's catacombs. As he walks in, the Lasombra gives a grunt as he begins to feel ill.

Cecilia

The monk looks worriedly at Cecilia "Why you are deathly pale! You need rest immediately Come, I shall find you a bed where you can recuperate." the Monk helps Cecilia into a small room. The bed is plain, and there is little else but a small stand and a wooden cross on the wall. A cool breeze is entering from the open window. "I shall send the Sisters to look at you soon enough." says the Monk as he closes the door.

As Cecilia makes herself comfortable, being weary from her journey. The door to her room opens and a young tall and frail young man wearing a monk's garb walks in "Sister Cecilia?" he asks.

How dark is the room. Is there anyway to close the window? If sunlight came through, would it shine directly upon her, or could she stay in bed and not worry about that?

Turning to Tebnit she gestured for him to leave them, he would remain in the area but for now she was content to attent on her own - if she was not safe with the prince the ghoul would not help, and if she was than the ghoul might react badly to any insult she might suffer - they could be unreliable at times.

That done she steeled herself as she followed the priest - noting his discomfort and remembering her earlier trouble she braced herself as the feeling hit her harder than before, whatever else it was it did not seem to be his own power. It was not a reassuring thought.

Still she followed silently after the priest.

If Father Paliuro didn't take the gift she will take it from Tebnit.

Tebnit

He was hesitant to leave at for a split second but she did this occassionally - wanting to speak to her own kind or other creatures from stories he felt, and relief washed over him. She had always been fine before and likely would be now.

So now he would have to find his contacts in the city from his explorator trips, Anen had always been in his eyes a bit straight laced - and cuddled but the man was his implied superior in the joint working for the girl and would should have matters of housing set out.

He had visited the Brothal of Hasna before - and even escorted her to Sidon once to conduct business, a hard edged woman and ancient by his reckoning she had struck an agreement with Anen about opening trade to the Christian kingdoms of Europe - to memory Neith was there for that discussion, Hasna had profited from the arrangement selling common enough looking girls for the markets of Europe and receiving more exotic specimens in return ... regional differences making the common less so.

Still as he set out to visit her estiblishment it was not those thoughts that drove him - Anen would have a man waiting in the restaurant above the fun and that would allow for him to confirm residence for Neith when she emerged, and the scholar also if he accepted her offer.

Tebnit is making his way to one of Neith's contacts to meet someone in the service of her other retainer. Baring him encountering anything odd I will than likely have him progress to finding where she will be sleeping afterwards.

Once the three follow Father Paliuro into the Church, the door is closed behind them. The Lasombra lead them deep into the Catacombs, through winding and narrow corridors. Considering the True Faith emanating from his most Holy Church, it is easy to see why Father Paliuro would pick this place to hold his court, at the same time, it is nothing short of madness. One can only wonder how he seems to accept this uneasiness that is felt by all Kindred within this place.

Father Paliuro leads them into a room, with several sarcophagus carved into the walls. They had arrived at Father Paliuro's court. The Priest addresses the three

"Now then, we can safely conduct our affairs. You three have entered my domain and chose to present yourselves to me, a wise choice. I am Father Paliuro Rustucci of Clan Lasombra. Some may call me "Prince", but I refuse to don such a title in the very city where our Lord Christ wore a crown of thorns." he says as he looks exactingly at the three to properly introduce themselves.

The window has a curtain, but it is not thick enough to completely block the sun. Furthermore, while there are shutters, Cecilia notices that there are cracks which may allow the dreaded sun to peak through. In this warm land, heat is normally a problem, so the windows are left open for air. Not to mention that the doors have no locks, as the Sisters and Monks are supposed to have free access to their patient. This is clearly no room for Kindred.

The young man quickly shuts the door behind him as soon as Cecilia confirms her identity. Turning towards her he says "I am Brother Timothy. Brother Bernardus sent me."

She listened as Themistokles introduced himself - so he was the same as herself and the scholar in arriving recently and was also here in relation to Brother Bernardus, it made her wonder what the malkavian was up to. Further she noted that the man made no mention of his clan or beliefs, though the mention of Carthage might be an indicator ... or a false trail.

Repeating her motions from earlier she as she curtsied holding it low as she spoke "Neith recently of Sidon formerly of no fixed abode within Egypt known in recent times as Lady Neith of the House of Aman, childe of Nefertari of the Followers of Set, adherant of the Via Peccati" she was dubious about mentioning such given the location and the priests vocation - but such things were easy to determine if one paid attention and it was better to be out in front of such matters.

"I am primarally within your city at the behest of my sire and clan to see how I operate under mostly my own guidence", raising from curtsy she brought the slab of stone to present to the Father "as such I would offer you this gift of my good intentions to you and your city" the carving was of a fish with a map of the middle east within its scales - a reference to early christianity, the seafaring nature of the Lasombra and the Crusades.

"Seperately I should let you know that Brother Bernardus also requested that I visit him - but the nature of his rational for that is still a mystery to me" nodding in Themistokles's direction "as for references to the fate of the Salubri - or as the Tremere have indicated soul-drinkers - I have no current interest in taking sides in that conflict should it occur within your city, as you may know many in my clan prefers to treat people on an individual basis rather than making broad generalisations, I choose to follow that principle", frankly she prefered the Tremere to the Salubri were she to engage in betting on the conflict.

Ah…there we have it. 3 Kindred arriving at the same night looking for the same man…some manipulation was at work but too subtle to be seen right until this moment. At Neith finishes he steps forward, feeling somewhat more confident about presenting himself formally under these circumstances.

“I am Edouard Fortier, Thaumaturgis Minoris bani Tremere; Master Scholar of the University of Paris specializing in the world of Antiquity.” He bows low and respectfully. “I have come to the city on Clan business, Bonds and Obligations..” a listener could hear the capital B and O in those words “…prevent me from disclosing specifics, but it too involves Brother Bernardus. Some subtle guiding hand appears to have arranged this meeting.”

He reaches within his satchel and brings forth an engraved leather scroll case clasped with jeweled brass. “My business here also requires an amount of discretion, I would consider is a Favor…” again the capital F is made apparent and he looks at Themistokles and Neith when he says so “…if my presence in the city was not widely declaimed, even to my fellow Tremere. As appreciation of your hospitality, do me the honor of accepting this gift; it is an illuminated description of Jerusalem from the year of Our Lord 30.”

He turns to Neith “Forgive me the small deception of ‘Martin LaValette’ my dear. It is a name I use, if only when traveling abroad.”

She shrugged at the admittion of deception - it made no sense to her in the circumstances, but at the same time she did not know the circumstances the man found himself in, "if you wish to maintain a low profile I am content to claim you as kin or a freed childe - you would be expected to act in line with that of course, but it might allow you greater cover than you might otherwise experience when asked your lineage", gaining the Tremere as an ally could be useful and having him work for the betterment of her own goals could be a good start to her work in the city, "assuming that Father Paliuro and Themistokles of Dominic of Samal do not feel the need to broadcast your presence otherwise. But we can discuss that later".

Returning to the conversation with the Prince and Themistokles "without knowing the Brother Bernardus I would not want to assume his goals - many a Malkavian has been mistaken for a mere prankster where the reality hid more vicious madness, or merely issues of the mind not prone to merriment" there was one in Sidon who insisted everything was tidy and grew terribly agiated if things were not, but within that an excellent source of information and a shrewd businessman - certainly not prone to pranks.

"I would also be interested in hearing any expectations you might have of us to remain within your city - and any items which you feel it would be worth us knowing, such as when you next would hold formal court Father Paliuro?", she finished.

Tebnit
The house guard was a young man wearing the house signia and looking out of place in restaurant, and likely had no idea what occured beneath it. Still he could wait a few minutes before Tebnit would approach him instead making his way back to where Hasna was standing watching those that entered. Without looking at him her voice was low and harsh "Tebnit" she offered.
Hasna he responded unsure how to proceed, "business is good?".
"The arrangement with your people has been worth while - what do you want" it was not spoken as a question more as a direction to get on with it.
He sighed "good - merely to let you know that we will be expanding business within town, and the relationship with you is valued ..." she waved her hand to stop him.
"You are not a smooth enough talker for flattery, Anen is to moral to truely engage in this business at the level we do - so" she turned her head to him her eyes fixed on his "who exactly is valuing the relationship".

For a second he almost stepped back before letting out a slight laugh he was used to the art of intimidation "clever - yes there are other hands pulling strings here for mutual profit, do you really want to rock that boat?", a slight smile appeared on her lips.
"Providing the relationship continues to be profitable we will all be content - your presence of courtesy in showing up is noted", offering a bow he left her. He wasn't sure if it had went well or not but at least she was happy with the relationship, meaning that information could flow.

Appraoching the guard "I am Tebnit, where is the house" he spend no time on small talk, the guard lead him through the streets to a large house - sufficent for Neith's needs certainly with back rooms away from light and a basement for any activities she needed more room for, Anen would already be sleeping for the night so satisfied with the arrangements he moved back to the entrance where he had left Neith.

Father Palurio nods at Edouard "I can comprehend the need of deception, yet you chose to reveal yourself in order to present yourself in my domain. Although you may be Tremere and you clan is guilty of a terrible crime, fear not, your secret is safe with me, nor shall I pry. As long as you are not involved in any trouble, then there is no reason for the Chantry to be made aware of your presence in the city." his words are reassuring, with a just small measure of threat for good measure.

Turning to Themistokles he says "Indeed, three Kindred brought together by the machination of a Malkavian during an important day of the calendar. Truth be told, I would not expect Brother Bernardus to have it in him to be able to gather kindred from so far away. I'm not sure if I should be concerned , or if I should just wave this off as typical Malkavian ranting, as there enough issues in this city as things stand. Since Saladin took this city, the Assamites are becoming bolder with each passing night. I am already doing everything I can to keep them in check, while making sure that the peace is maintained"

He turns to Neith, and it takes him a moment to remember that he is not talking to a mere child, but a Kindred who had presented herself in his domain "I do not hold regular court, barring an emergency of course, as it provides the Assamites with a prime target. Ever since Saladin took Jerusalem, I am constantly ensuring that all Kindred within my Domain are protected, while waiting patiently for the day that the city is restored to Christianity. You would do well to be wary of the Assamites. They wrongly believe that this city is theirs and do not appreciate foreigners, especially Kindred."

Finally he addresses all three "As you have all said, although we may be facing the ravings of a madman, we would be wise to be cautious. This Holy City has already seen its fair share of blood and insanity, and only recently has it finally been able to regain a a measure of tranquility. A tranquility that I desire all Kindred to uphold. Seek Brother Bernardus and find what he desires from you, while not forgetting to adhere to the Traditions as you have all done so far."

The Lasombra turns to Themistokles

"Etheria is known to visit Jerusalem during Easterside, so you may be in luck. Unfortunately even while in Jerusalem she hardly shows herself. You'd have more luck seeking his Childe, Boniface. He has been known to prowl along the Via Dolarossa, upsetting charlatans who would peddle false artifacts to pilgrims, or you could seek him in one of the Christian Hospitals which he protects. A noble pursuit. Otherwise, you could seek Etheria in Bethlehem where she goes by the Holy Woman of Bethlehem. You can go to the bazaars across Jerusalem. I am certain you can find a map vendor and a local willing to guide you for the right price."

He then takes a moment to reply to Neith's question

"Of what I know, Brother Bernardus is known to change havens quite often. Fortunately for you, its not as if he has enemies. Even the Assamite do not bother with him, therefore he doesn't go through great length to hide himself. Last I heard he had established himself in the Jewish Quarter by the Dung Gate. Perhaps there is something ironic about a Catholic Monk hiding amongst thew Jew, yet who knows the logic behind a Malkavian's decision. Go towards the Hospital of St. Mary of the Germans and keep heading South towards the Dung Gate. After three blocks turn East towards the Wailing Wall. You will find a stables, and as far as I know, you should find your benefactor there."

Nodding respectfully to the Father, "I also assume that we have little to fear from Assamites unless we engage against them - to act overly brazenly would initiate a conflict that traditionally no single clan would win alone. Unless they have been breaching the tradition of the embrace which seems more short sighted than my experience of them", she would wait to interact with them before passing judgement and she wanted the Father to know that she would not be initiating conflict that might escalate out of control.

Most likely than not, Father Palurio intentionally chose this place as it offers a measure of protection against Kindred.

Soon the Kindred are lead outside the Church, and as soon as the door is closed behind them, they feel a sense of relief as the effects of the True Faith emenating from the Church disappears.

Brother Timothy nods at Cecilia "Sir Christopher... of Carmack. I will remember that name. Follow me, I shall take you through one of the back doors, so that you don't raise any suspicions as to why you are moving about when you should be bed ridden." True to his word, Brother Timothy navigates through the hospital with a sense of great familiarity. Reaching the back door he lets Sister Cecilia out.

She made note of the catacombs as she left, she might need to hid here sometime and it would not do to be lost - although hidding where the Prince resided was not her ideal plan. Listening to the Brujah she did not seek to educate him - nearly any Setite could paralyze with a glance and her understanding was that the Tremere had the similiar mental command of the mind as the Ventrue and the Lasombra - ignoring any of their more estotic abilities.

"Correct in terms of direct combat potential my stature is effectively a representative of my abilities - and while I suspect that most of our kind have recieved some basic training I have not proceeded beyound the basics" she answered "frankly I feel that direct combat should be a last resort for any sensible creature".

Reaching the surface, "I will be waiting on my man to return prior to progressing to the Brother - but of course I understand if you both are eager to be about your business", she suspected that Tebnit would be back in a few minutes. Looking to Edouard "until he returns I will not know if my offer of hospitality is suitable - however if you are interested in a cover for when you encounter other kindred my offer of allowing you to kinship is open" she would have said feign kinship but there guides might be compromised "though there are things you would be expected to know and certain expectations of you for that , if it interests you we can speak later on it", namely the worship of Set at least around other Followers, and working for the betterment of the clan in Jerusalem in the form of herself.

The large man twitches a little, seemingly agitated.

"Just a moment" He waves to his attendant, who begins walking over. Along with the horse. "I think there's some kind of misunderstanding here, and I'm not sure how to explain this or go from here. I'm operating under the presumption that everyone here would like to continue existing.

Sometimes it's best to put a bit of thought into ones actions before making them. Strategy applies to everything. Even how one goes about retreat.

"A safe assumption" she acknowledged "however trust is earned, not freely given", examining the bottom of her dress for dust as if uninterested in the servant her eyes followed his moves and reactions carefully. Was he a human or a ghoul what did he likely know about the kindreds nature.

Such clues could be identified when a possible Domitor was challanged even partially, and would tell pieces of the treatment of the possible ghoul.

"In brief while I would hope that we can get along I am not merely going to trust you with my potential weaknesses solely because you asked, and we happen to be linked by the name of a third party", the man did not seem simple - but he did seem direct, perhaps she should find it refreashing to deal with but in reality hidding manipulation behind a mask of directness was an old trick.

She then turns, using her cloak to cover her head and follows the directions Brother Timothy gave to find the Malkavian (she assumes), Brother Bernardus.

He notes to the other two, "You're still far safer, and should consider yourselves lucky. He's very talented." he chuckles a bit, and adds, "Well, at least as long as he feels like protecting you."

Themistokles sighs, "I'm trying not to insult them."
"Oh. Have I mispoken? My apologies. I thought you were having difficulty finding the right words."

He turns to the others, "Since it's out there now it seems. Basically I have no particular attachment, loyalty, or incentive to risk my life for either of yours." he pauses, before adding, "I should add I won't take offense if you end up leaving me to the dogs either.

The attitude of the presumed ghoul was clear, my master should be respected, they are great which was a fair attitude to have for a ghoul, she noted his name.

The Brujah's comments on attachment seemed redundant to her, the only thing they shared was the name of a malkavian and that they introduced themselves to the prince, if he claimed loyalty based on that alone she would think him deranged.

She also noted the Tremere's comments - earlier he had mentioned that he may need somewhere to stay, but now in the company of others was clear in his independence. This suited her well enough it was an open offer but if she could see the issues with his attempt to pass as kine others would also and if he was not going to mention his clan she wondered how he would handle it ... but in truth it was not her concern and focused on Tebnit "I assume everything is well?" his nod was all she needed, "good".

"I am happy to see the Brother Bernardus now" still directing her comments to Tebnit "can your attract the attention of a carraige driver, it would be unseemly to walk", and with the presence of whatever mental sickness was present in this city that had twice affected her she was eager to avoid it. Also avoiding the sight of any hostile kindred would be a bonus of such transport.

As Tebnit went about his task she turned to the others, "I am happy to share a carraige with either of you if you prefer rather than walking".

"I'd like to be able to retreat quickly in the event of an attack, but we're likely to draw less attention if we aren't noticed. Yeah. I'll be up for that." He turns to Gabro, and the horse, stating.

"Probably best for you to follow us from a safe distance."

The horse snorts, almost as if in acknowledgement.

Cecilia

The Cappadocian makes her way through the dark streets of Jerusalem. As she proceeds she notices that there are less people walking around in this part of the city, compared to the main roads, which are filled with pilgrims. The streets are like a maze of twisting cobbled roads and at the intersection of three small streets, Cecilia finds the building that Brother Timothy had told her.

The building was once whitewashed and cleaned, but is now crumbling, it plaster shattered on the muddy ground. It would seem as if the building was suffering from leprosy. In the other streets, peasants can be seen scurrying in the moonless night, going back to their homes for the night. On the other streets, lamp lights burn and houses light the streets outside. However in front of the house, only shadows cover the narrow path.

She notices a single torch flickering within the house.

As she is about to knock, she notices five individuals approaching the house, a tall armored man with a horse and an Ethiopian, a man dressed in heavy robes, and what looks to be a father accompanying his daughter.

Edouard, Neith & Themistokles

As the Kindred where next to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, they notice that the procession with the effigy of the dead Jesus had began, and the streets where now packed with pilgrims and worshipers, as they begin to sing in Greek the Lamentations of Good Friday. It would be very hard for Tebnit to find a carriage with this crowd.

However, as the group distance themselves from the Church, they find that the streets seem to be moving with a more normal pace, as those peasants who have remained on the streets at this hour of the night preparing to head home, or are trying to peddle some last wares before closing shops, or have some business to conduct under the cover of darkness. It takes Tebnit some time, but he is able to find a carriage.

The carriage takes the group towards the old city, in an uneventful ride. The driver eventually lets the Kindred down as the road ahead would be too narrow to fit the carriage through. They would have to walk the rest of the distance.

After a few minuites of walking through the winding streets, they finally arrive at the house that Father Palurio had said that the Malkavian uses as a haven. As they approach it, they notice a Catholic Nun outside of the door.

Tebnit paid the carraige driver and remained with him momentarally talking about the city before passing him some more coin, if was always useful to have loyal connections and coin influnced the loyalty of many.

When Neith saw the nun she did a double take - it was a bit late for a lone woman to be about, moreso in anything but streetwalker or begger garb, and given the night that was in it and how many Kindred she choose to examine the woman for what were rapidly becomming tell tale signs ... catching her own arrogance as that thought came to her, it didn't do too assume.

As they speak, the door to the house creaks open. A man dressed in robes walks out. He has a badly scarred face and the rough hands of a man used to physical labor. To Cecilia, this man looks like an older version of Brother Timothy whom she had met at the hospital.

"Good evening Sister Cecilia, Neith, Themistokles Hygeinos and Trigus. My name is Paul. Please come in, Brother Bernardus is waiting for you." he says as he looks at each one as he names them. Paul then moves away from the entrance to allow the guests in.

Edouard bows politely while gritting his teeth inwardly. There is power in Names and he’s had no less than three attached to him in a single evening. ‘What have you gotten me into Sire? And why did you send me instead of coming yourself…’

He spares a glance at the Sister, greeted in the same manner as the rest of them. My what a night it had been for far flung travelers. He knew little of the Malkavians, and how they gleaned their lunatic insights into events. What he disliked most of the situation is the feeling of fatalism; that his actions are predestined and inevitable. He disliked feeling under another’s control.

With another look at each of his “companions” he enters the dwelling in a sweep of robes.

“Good to know we are expected…”

The woman was pale but breathing but before Neith took in any other details the man Paul appeared and she turned her attention to him, if the woman was included in his invite it was likely that she was kindred that Neith could puzzel it out later. Was she a native so did not present herself?, perhaps.

More interesting in the immediate was the new name 'Trigus', Edouard or Martin seemed to have and use a number of them - which was fine and good, but the use of three so close together spoke of some oddness. Unlikely to be a serious concern to her due to the haphazard nature of the name change - perhaps some form of madness, she mused.

Reaching to Tebnit she held his hand lightly as she made her way inside, eyes wide as she took in things - focusing on Sister Cecilia briefly to offer a smile and slight incline of the head.

Neith takes the time to study Paul, and realizes that if he is Kindred, then he is upholding a fine act. Looking inside from the open door, the Kindred notice that the building is in tatters, the walls and floor bare, but Neith doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Paul leads the group inside "I am the assistant to your host and I represent the purveyor of the request. Please come inside, I shall attempt to prove that what we offer is worthy of your long travels." he says with a nervous hint in his voice.

As the Kindred walk into the hallway, the wreck of the door creaks as Paul closes the door behind them. The furnishing of the house are non-existent and empty corridors with water-stained walls open into a large meeting hall at the center of this once prestigious home. In a single chair, placed precisely at the center of the room, a portly monk seems to be waiting for the Kindred, lacing his fingers together, over and over again. As soon as the monk notices the Kindred he looks up and says ""So good of you to come, so good, so thoughtful. Yes, yes, pull up a chair, do make yourselves at home." The Kindred will notice that there are no other chairs, but the Monk seems to be too preoccupied to notice "Dear friends." he says although he clearly doesn't know a soul in the room besides Paul "It is I who brought you here, and I am so pleased you have come to aid me. I know the journey was long and you are tired, but it is of utmost importance that I speak with you of this matter immediately. My name..." he continues breathlessly "... is Brother Bernardus."

So if kindred was bothering to conceal it in his own home - likely a ghoul rather than a childe she noted.

The adult woman ignoring her was just as well, being overlooked could be highly beneficial - depending on how the meeting went she might even assume that Tebnit was the kindred rather than the child with him, but doubtful.

The accomadation would not suit her she decided - it was run down and thereby likely to be inspected by children during the day or sought by those who wanted to place a new building for whatever reason, perhaps she should consider that herself, holding room for goods might be well worth setting up away from the primary household, her brother likely had one but the unsavoury matters might deserve a second, and placing Brother Bernardus in a haven controlled by her might be worth investigating.

Entering the room and looking at the malkavian she reminded herself it might not be worth investigating also.

Offering a slight smile and crinking her dress slightly as she made another dip, she was getting bored with the formality that she adhered to in new company, "my family thanks you for the invitation - we were considering coming here shortly and an invitation was the exscuse we needed. How can we be of assistance", she maintained the 'we' rather than the first person solely to raise to qustion as to if she was here alone and the importance of Tebnit, he companions for the carraige ride would likely have figured it out - but her kind were known for casual deception, were Tebnit her actual sire it would not be unprecedented ... considering it if Nefertari actually wanted to she would have masquaraded as Tebnit without even Neith knowing.

In lieu of sitting he folds his hands into his robe and bows respectfully. Hopefully this will be a simple exchange but he somehow doubts it.

"I thank you for your hospitality, and for meeting on such short notice. Trigus sends his regards and regrets; events have conspired to keep him in France. I am Edouard Fortier, I speak with his voice and am authorized to deal on his behalf."

Well he'd never been given that authority officially but if Trigus wished to send him as a catspaw AGAIN then he can damn well deal with the necessities. Perhaps someday he'd be given permission to sire and have a childe of his own he could send around doing errands that didn't feel important.

You are a cruel man to destroy my words, oh yes you are!" he scolds the Brujah before scratching his head. The Kindred would notice that the Malkavian is clearly not taking care of himself and it would not surprise them if by judging by the stench, the mismatch of cast off clothes he is wearing were taken from the city's rubbish heap.

"Where was I..." he says as he loses his trail of thought "... some time ago a group of strangers came to this Holy City, claiming to be students of faith. It was only a short time ago that we... my brothers in the city and I mean... discovered their true nature. Oh, but by then it was too late. Too late!" He sighs and his girth shakes in echo "They know of my comings and goings, their infernal servants spy on me from sundown to sunup! Tebnit

The man looked around him confused - in his mind whatever Neith was it wasn't holy and he gathered that the others were similiar monsters, or as the Brother had put it 'Beasts of Satan' ... he knew that at least the girl was a blood drinking fiend capable of heinous actions, he accepted that long ago and had forsook any regard for the various names of Gods baring Set who she demanded he at least occassionally pay lip service to. But right now he felt like praying to something else - a sharp pain in his forearm directed his attention to the girl looking at him.

Neith
"Wait outside - don't listen at the door, but come if I shout", her fingers would not pierce the flesh but were she somewhat stronger they might have, they were all so flippent around discussing matters that Ghouls did not need to hear, it irked her - but perhaps they had not been ghouls themselves and didn't know what it was like, she watched him leave and for the door to close.

Looking back to the Brother and calming herself, "one fiend alone could control the animals, talk to the minds of men to set them to task and could deform animals from what I know" in truth she had only met a single fiend in her time and the woman had been arrogant and engaged in all manner of odd studies of the flesh, but had been a good contact for purchasing mortals that would sell poorly otherwise, "that alone might cause people to place note other superstitions and see poor milk as an omen, and the behaviour of one might cause many to assume the actions of something worse" not that a fiend engaging in such overt behaviour wasn't bad.

"However there are three elements I would like to confirm - you mentioned that they speak in alien and ancient language, which ancient languages and what foreign tongue? secondly you mentioned that your brothers were also aware, which brothers your clanmates or your religious fellows - should I decide to follow up I may need to speak to them" and she may have to speak harshly "and finally these strangers are they kindred or something else" pausing briefly "frankly with after meeting the prince and knowing that his rivals are the Assamite it seems unlikely that the any overt kindred infernalist would exist for long", perhaps ghouls serving a master but it could be unrelated to the kindred entirely ... assuming there was anything at all to the ravings.

Still the Baali ... she would have to action them, her sire had made it clear that regardless of alliances that needed to be made or rivalries lost the Baali were to be destroyed wherever they occured they were enemies of the entire clan and it was the one duty her sire would not let her slip on.
Hopefully it was not them - facing her sire after failing to oppose them would be unpleasant.

He hadn't come here to battle Infernalists, he had a job to do...but perhaps this was an opportunity for a better job. Delivering an Infernalist to his maker would be more prestigious than simply recovering some relics...and perhaps he could do both?

As soon as he does, his bloody tears dry up as he falls silent, staring at the decaying wall as if to make some sense out of the messages it was relaying to him "Abdullah the Shepard told tales of a two faced lamb being born... the young man is honest as they comes... he wouldn't lie.... the Church of St. James the Elder had the collected tithes stolen as well as the utensils used for Holy Communion... figures stalking the Dome of the Rock... weird curved writing... yes... read from right to left... all over the city... they stole something from us... we want it back...I have failed... Taniel the Baker... poor man... his bread wouldn't rise and his bakery was swarmed... strange whispers..." he goes silent again for several moments, still staring at the wall before his head turns towards the Kindred.

He blinks a few moments before breaking into bloody tears again "You must help me! You simply must! It must be you! I am too well known in this city, but you are a collection of unknown and insignificant Cainites! You will succeed where I failed! You must succeed!" the dirty man jumps from his chair and throwing himself before Cecilia, he grabs the hem of her robe, as he begins to beg "Please, tell me you accept! Do so and my brothers and I will ensure that you are properly rewarded for your trouble!"

Her eyes narrowed at the brother "having a collection of 'unknown and insignificant Cainites' investigate areas of potential infernal activity would seem an excellent way of setting them up to be suspected of such actions", his reputation was one of harmlessness but that in itself was an excellent defence against suspicion of demon worship, maintaining obvious focus on the Brother she also exaimined Paul out of the corner of her eyes, if the infernalists wee aware of the Brother and he was innocent of being one of them taking control of one of his ghouls would be the first step.

If this was more then the ravings of a madman they would not be able to inform the Prince or his rivals of the investigation without potentially alerting the enemy - as a potential trap it was fair, and that they presented themselves to the prince first was meaningless they could have snuck in earlier and than informed him to create an illusion of only showing up later. Yes regardless of what the infernalists knew having them investigate could easilly be considered a bonus for them be deflecting blame.

"This is not really my area of expertise" though she would investigate in her own way - she felt that the others in the group would likely be more reliable allies for assisting her than the madman and given that he might be involved it was better that he felt they were not looking.

The sister's jaw drops open, but she quickly closes it. She's still stunned by what the lunatic just called her. Just called all of them. "Is... is that your way of trying to convince us to help you? I dropped everything to answer this vi.... summons. I came here thinking I had been chosen by God, not some...." Sister Cecilia's face twists in anger, and she turns away to not say anything she'd regret. "The child is right. Your proof is not proof at all, but merely coincidences strung together. You could be getting set up by a serpent, or a flesh-shaper. And you wish to throw us naïve little puppets into the fire." Having gained composure, she turns back, though not completely. On that note." he turns to Barnabus, "I've noticed that you've been talking to that wall quite a bit. And it makes me wonder if there's something going on with it."

Themistokles notices that the wall is water stained just like most of the walls in this rundown house. It may have once been a magnificent building, but it has long been in disrepair. It is obvious to the Brujah that neither Brother Bernardus nor his servants live in this house and human hands have not touched this house in many years. He doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

The Malkavian momentarily stops his begging, and while still clutching Cecilia's ankle turns his attention to Themistokles and replies ominously "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin..." before bursting into bloody tears once more and continuing to beg "Please! Does this mean that you will help me?"

(Intelligence + Theology roll everyone to open below)

Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin is a phrase from the Old Testament, more specifically the Book of Daniel. When the Babylonian King Belshazzar had held a banquet using the utensils stolen from the Temple of God, a mysterious hand had written these words on the wall. The Prophet Daniel interpreted these words as follows:

Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians."

King Belshazzar was murdered the same night, and Darius the Mede took over the Kingdom.

In other words "The writing is on the wall."

Hmm, he still seems rather agitated.

The malkavian seemed honest - but what did that really mean, she herself was accomplished at lying and knew that others were better at it, and even a poor liar might be overlooked at times. Still it was enough to give him some benefit of the doubt.

Looking at the scene with the Sister she would have almost been amused, but the woman seemed to be fickle - one moment annoyed and correct in her working on the 'proof;, the next agreeing to help despite no circumstances changing.

She was about to answer when the Brujah spoke of tricks - her mind replaying the scene, he had asked about the wall the Brother had answered regarding some fable from some older scripture in a language she was trying to place and the man had reacted - the man likely missed the words and given the talk of infernalist and the possibilty of curses it was a safe concern. Looking to Themistokles "he merely referenced a story from the Book of Daniel - to apply meaning, 'the signs of doom are all over this city', looking to the Brother "something to be blunt - I have my doubts about".

Examining the Malkavian reaction - so something terrible in his mind but worth it for the city, or a very deep con, she mulled it over.

Turning to the large man "yourself or the sister?" she queried "and do you know the sister's clan, her background, her sire, which of the Viae she adhers to?" shrugging "you acted as if you did not know her when you meet outside, and she has shown no servants and as such not even a hint of being capable of handling someone under the bond - which is not the solution to all issues some of the young think it is" pausing "no you are either displaying subtlety that would result in making yourself seem the obvious choice of the two offered, or you are displaying a bias against myself and our other collegue" nodding to Edouard.

Turning to the sister "I mean no offence of course merely mentioning the details as understand them - you may have a legion of devoted slaves - I simply have not seen them, nor has the warrior as I understand it" there was no harshness in her voice at any point, many younger Kindred - and some elder ones - often retained there mortal failings over overlooking those who appeared as children, she had played on this at times but outside her sires control she would be expected to manage on her own which included commanding a certain amount of respect when she spoke - at least from the dead who should know better.

"Regardless I will not be accepting the bond, if he is an infernalist which I admit I do not believe, he would have to be one of the best liars I have seen - then he would likely be already bound and so you would be inviting a exceptionally deceptive infernalist to have every excuse to be around you due to infatuation - and for his crimes to appear as yours", pausing "if he is not one you risk being seen as a power grapping interloper by any kindred within this city and targeting its existing citizens - his friends may not appreciate you taking advantage of him during what may be a frequent episode, and the blood of Malkav may direct him to interfer with your life at odd times" she returned her attention to the brother.

"I will assist with investigating this to determine if your claims have any substance, if they do ridding the city of them might be worth it without any compensation" at least from him the various factions might well be grateful for such a plot exposed "but to clarify it is not our Lord Christ, I have my own beliefs on such matters", a belief system that mentioned that the Baali and their pawns should be destroyed, Set himself had opposed them in some stories after all.

"Edouard ..." she caught herself before asking if his clans much spoken about and little understood blood magic could shed some light on if someone was tainted, he wanted his lineage secret after all "after speaking earlier do you have any insight into matters that might help, perhaps something in your studies that would allow us to verify these stories or folklore that points to tests that those of an infernal binding might not be able to stand hidden before?" she suspected that any such tests would be as sound as her not being able to cross a threshold without invitation, but perhaps he had something to more meaningful to add.

Brother Bernardus does not flinch as Edouard cuts his wrist. Quite the opposite, the Malkavian seems to be staring at Edouard as if trying himself to figure out the Tremere's secrets. Only once Edouard begins to taste the vitae does Bernardus suddenly recoil his hand "Ooowww...." he whines in protest at the pain as he licks the wound to close it. Edouard tastes the vitae.

Edouard can tell that he is truly tasting the blood of a Malkavian. Brother Bernardus is eight generation removed from Caine and has not supped on vitae in four days. Edouard has reasons to suspect that the Malkavian mostly consumes animal blood. If there is any infernalist taint within Bernardus' blood, Edouard cannot taste it.

Looking at Brother Bernardus, Edouard feels quite sympathetic towards the Malkavian. After all, unlike other Kindred who would recoil at Edouard's presence and label him an 'Usurper" Bernardus had not even hesitated to offer his own vitae.

In the corner of his eye Edouard sees something black moving behind Bernardus' chair, however the moment he blinks, its gone.

She watched the ritual the Tremere conducted and momentarily considered the possibility that perhaps the clan was dupped into subjecting themselves to the bond and that the 'power' they had to determine loyalty was in fact just the feelings that the bond would engender. She dismissed the possibility - were that the case the clan would have been wiped out long ago, baring a long con being conducted by the Tremere.

She than listened to the tirade of the Sister as she claimed to know there clans and listed her own, and than the Brujah's and Malkavians plan to bind her.

As the woman awoke and began babbling she almost sighed.

"What happened you asked?" she paused "firstly you claimed to know our clans, than you highlighted the treachery of your own clan - I assume you refer to many of them misteriously disappearing some years ago without word and leaving responsibilities unfulfilled, and the misplaced assumption of treachery on the part of the Tremere - after all how can one engage in treachery against an enemy, you than accused our warrior cohort of being a brute and again rounded on the Tremere for the actions of his clan in curtailing those who traffic with souls. I suppose I should be fortunate that my own clan was regarded as above reproach" she paused with a smile "you than passed out and our Malkavian friend and Brujah confident though it best to bind you to their blood rather than fetch a servant or animal for the task. You awoke prior to that and began babbling, prior to asking your question on the state of the world" she finished.

"I would be curious as to how you placed the clans as you did?" she asked.

Sister Cecilia frowns slightly at the child. "Did I? Oh please, please forgive my words. I..." she lowers her head in shame and looks back at the two she made accusations of. "I do not even know what it is I said. I apologize." Then back to Neith. "I do not know what clan you are from, sister. But I suspect that Themistokles and his companion Gabra are Brujah, due only to their discussion of rebuilding Carthage, well known to be a Brujah utopian dream, where kine and kindred lived together in supposed harmony.

"As for Edouard, I believe he is a Tremere?" she looks back to him for confirmation, but without any contempt. "I would think his use of blood magic would give him away. Not many outside of their clan use it. In fact, isn't it considered punishable by death for a Tremere to share this knowledge outside of the clan?"

Cecilia turns once again to the child. "As for your clan, I can do nothing but guess. A clue would be that you are a child, but that is not much of a clue as there are more than a few sires who have chosen children to be their fledglings. You do not worship the same God as I, but again that means nothing, as there few clans with religious specifications. You do not seem mad, nor are you obviously deformed in some way, so that rules out three clans. I did not sense you had feasted upon an elder, so that rules out two others. You are not pale and deathly as I am, so that rules out two more clans. You do not act as a fool, grooming yourself and staring off at something no one else notices, so that rules out them."

Cecilia puts fingers to lips, staring at the child in wonder. It is a puzzle to be solved. "You have a distaste for my not owning slaves, so that rules out those clans. I would know if you were a guardian, so that eliminates the Lamia. So that leaves Ventrue, Setite, and Tzimisce. As you do not seem to be a pious, self-serving ba... little girl, I think it safe to say you are not a Ventrue. And lastly, you have not twisted your servant into some horrid creation, so I believe Tzimisce is out. Therefore, you must be a Setite. Am I wrong?"

As the Kindred argue, all of a sudden they hear a disturbance in the door. A man, who seems to be a younger version of Paul and whom Cecilia will recognize as Brother Timothy comes running into the room, passes by the Kindred as if they weren't there and falls on his knees before Bernardus "Brother..." he pants, "...there has been some... trouble..."

"Speak!" Commands Bernardus in a tone of absolute authority that one would expect the Ventrue to use when dealing with their servants.

"The Cainite from the hospice has been kidnapped by a coven Infernalists my Lord!" explains Timothy "I saw it with my own eyes! She was assaulted and kidnapped by three Infernalists who dragged her away. I knew I would be no match for them, so I carefully followed them to their lair and came immediately to warn you!"

Brother Bernardus becomes irate at the news and turns towards the gathered Kindred "You must go immediately! Timothy can show you the way! We cannot allow them to continue their unholy works! Your debt will be paid, I swear that on the bones of the Saints, but go now!" he speaks with a sense of urgency.

She listened to the womans explanation, "your conclusion is correct - but your logic is flawed. The vast majority of my clan consider slavery to be anathema - Set's doctrine such as it is would be 'everyone - man, woman, child should be free to live the life they wish without unwanted interference from others', and it would go on to indicate that in the ideal world that Set will deliver that none would wish to interfere with another thereby removing the obvious contradiction of those that are free to do as they wish imposing themselves on others. Somewhat more appealing I would think than the stories of locasts the size of horses with the heads of woman devouring all if I remember revelations correctly" shrugging "I am far more pragmatic about matters and understand that working the system is often needed, but as advise accusing the more traditional Follower of Set of being a slaver is a quick way to insult one - in the same level of insult as accusing a christian of being in league with witches - it is fundumentally against what are the more common principles that they adhere to" she finished.

"You have also discounted that the lepers - and others - often mask themselves, but I suppose it is moot" she noted as the new man entered, taking particular note of the Malkavian's reactions.

"I am not warrior to deal with a cult on short notice" she stated bluntly - that was why she hired guards "I will investigate but I would know who is the kidnapped kindred in advance?" if the infernalists existed and were truely aware of the Brother but had lost him for the night having his man notice there abduction could be intended to lure him out for a trap.

"Yes, the lepers do mask themselves, from kine. But in the presence of kindred, at least the ones I have met in my studies, seem to revel in forcing their horrid visage upon their brethren. And the gangrel as well do not hide their beastly ways. As for Malkavians..." she indicates Brother Bernardus. "I have yet to meet one who can hide his dementia. Now, let us put this aside."

She heads toward Brother Timothy. "Lead the way, brother. You can tell us about this kidnapped cainite as we go."

By the time Neith turns around, she finds that Brother Bernardus has headed towards a room connected to the main one which one served as a stable, all the while mumbling and ranting to himself, clearly lost in a conversation with himself. However the command had been clearly given to Brother Timothy "Please, follow me we do not have much time. The Infernalists appear to be conducting a ritual. Streets of Jerusalem: (About after 2am)

A bitter and dusty wind blows across the street as Brother Timothy leads the coterie through the winding streets of Jerusalem. It is already late at night, and an eerie calm has settled throughout the Holy City, as even the faithful have retreated for the night. The ghoul runs as fast as his feet can carry him, while at the same time being considerate for the Kindred who are following him.

As he leads them deeper into the streets of Jerusalem, the ghoul explains

"Brother Bernardus has been suspecting that the Infernalists may be on the move, so he commanded me to watch over this woman who works at the hospice and other individuals. When I saw her being assaulted and dragged by three men, I carefully followed them to their lair before returning to Brother Bernardus. I dared not approach the stable which they are using too much. I heard them chanting in some strange tongue that I do not recognize, while drawing queer symbols on the ground. I dared not stay longer least I was noticed."

In the skyline, the Kindred can see the Tower of David, meaning that the ghoul was leading them into the Armenian Quarter of the city.

There was one one who seemed to be giving the orders to the other two robed men. He was a short and swarthy man wearing a voluminous black robe. I have no idea what this ritual is, or how long it will take, but I ran away as soon as I saw them begin to carve the symbols on the ground with bloody daggers."

"I was not given information about her or an explanation by Brother Bernardus as to why she was to be monitored, nor is it my position to pry if he feels that there is a reason not to tell me." replies the ghoul, as he begins to think hard for a few moments "Of what I was able to gather, her name is... Asha... I think, and she is a nurse working in hospitals around the city helping sick pilgrims. I believe she is of Arabic stock... perhaps even Egyptian, tall for a woman and a beautiful one at that. I beg your pardon, but that is all I know of her." he gives a sigh "From what I was able to gather from Brother Bernardus, the infernalists wish to make sacrifices for whatever dark powers they worship. With each death they grow stronger and with each murder they take one more step towards destroying the fragile peace of Jerusalem. I believe that is why he bid me to look over her." the ghoul shudders at the thought.

Edouard begins to consider the rituals, but as the details given by Brother Timothy are sketchy, and considering that he does not recognize the tongue spoken, nor did he stay to see the symbols being drawn, it could be a multitude of rituals. Edouard would have to see it for himself.

Brother Timothy leads the Coiterie towards the edge of the city, taking a bit over half an hour following Neith's pace when all of a sudden Brother Timothy stops running, and motions for the others to stop. He places his back upon the wall and looks over a corner, and whispers "The stable where you will find the infernalists is around this corner and then down the street. I do not dare get any closer." the Ghoul seems to grow pale and is terrified as he begins to take short breaths in order to calm himself. He dares to take another look around the corner to make sure that they where at the right place. Nodding his head that he has brought them to the right place he turns to the Coterie "Please..." he begs them "... remember... I was not here. Defend yourselves well... the horrors they perform..." he says while shuddering, and begins to walk away. He had done his duty as commanded by his master.

This is clearly one of the poorer areas of Jerusalem. The houses themselves are old, crumbling and due to the limited space within the city, the houses were built one stuck to the other. One of the houses is only a single story high, and one agile enough could use the wooden beam in order to climb up. Murder was always an option but that she was not sure of the Roads that her fellows followed and didn't really want an arguement about the nature of man versus beast, there was also the method of how - certainly quitely but having Tebnit slit his throat easy having a snack might be better by eating before any further conflict.

From the corner of her eye she saw the Brujah signal with his thumb to her smiling, and the next instant he was moving - she cursed inwardly Brujah were not known for there patient nature and this one had demonstrated exactly wh. did he think she would be unable to deal with it? that it was taking too long? was his blood merely running hot? ... in the end she supposed it didn't matter.

Pointing to the fallen man "Tebnit, kill him" she than stepped back and waited for Tebnit to create an opening to reestiblish eye contact.

Step back and Once Tebnit has attacked see about regaining eye contact.

Estiblish eye contact is normally automatic if the person is looking at you, diff 4 if they are not to get there attention (Neith is placing herself in his expected line of vision for this) and diff 10 if they are actively trying to avoid looking at your eyes (where a distraction would be needed such as perhaps being attacked).

He was unsure what to do - Neith had ordered him to kill the man, but attacking the other one would likely earn her wrath, both hers in fact. The blood compelled him to serve and and try to please the little creature but angering an adult version of the same might be disastrous. Fortunately he was saved from the decision at the last moment.

Happy to have regained control she voice was low "Tebnit relent", she studied the man before her carefully as a child might examine an interesting bug - was he trying to call out to his demonic masters? was he begging for mercy from the Christian god? she had no clue.

"Sister yield way please, you are disturbing my man. Tebnit hook your blade under his throat and be prepared to end this but not yet", pausing it was natural to look at people as you spoke but that was not possible now "I had wanted this to be quick and clean but I guess some miscommunication occured. I have revealed myself to this man and given him cause to remember me so either he dies, becomes my ghoul and held prisoner for days to ensure a full bond she could think of some uses for him "and even than only if he is not tainted by our prey. On that point can I have someone test him for taint" she meant Edouard but was going to avoid names and identifing charactistics - the man had sensible remained hidden during all this "or I suppose I could mangle him beyound any means of identifying anyone - but I have always thought such methods were needlessly cruel and wasteful - although given his assumed allegiance perhaps depriving his masters of his spirit might be worthwhile", the level of damage done to a human was something she had seen rarely but she understood that some on the Via Crudelitas delighted in such matters.

The houses themselves are shoddy, indicating that they are in the poorer area of Jerusalem, which also means less chances of the guards patrolling. One of the houses nearby seems to be abandoned from the outside, and may provide for a suitable hiding spot. The rotting wooden door seems to not be locked either. Another choice is to leave the Sentry in one of the dark alleys, where it is highly unlikely that anyone will be passing by. Until dawn at least.

Edouard makes a point of staying out of the sentrys eye line. He gestures acknowledgment to Neith and motions to the abandoned looking building.

"This will suffice?"

He'd feel more at ease off the street and able to work.

Themistokle's drags the now tied up body and takes it into the room. There's a sigh. Would have been nice if there was something to conceal him. But it seems quite empty. And so the body is put right beside the entrance. Any would be patrols might miss it if they aren't thorough.

He's not counting on that though.

"Let's try and make this quick. I don't want to spend tomorrow in that hovel. That being said I'm going to look for other sentries."

He heads outside the building, looks around a bit, and seems to find what looks to be what he was looking for. He motions for Gabra who stands beside the building.
It seems he's using him as a perch.

Themistokles manages to climb up on the roof of the house with a bit of difficulty, due to his weight. As he kicks his feet to give him some upward push, some bricks dislodge from the crumbling wall, causing them to crash below on the street while making a lot of noise and narrowly missing the Coterie. As the Brujah looks at the direction of the stable, he does notice movement within. If those inside heard the noise he just made, then they don't seem to bothered as they continue to do what ever they are doing. Fortunately, the noise he made also doesn't seem to concern the Kine of such a run-down area of the city, as nobody seem to care enough to get out of bed this late at night to investigate.

Looking around Themistokles does not notice any one else on the streets. It would seem that those inside the stables had only placed a single sentry outside. Focusing on the stables, he notices that there is a main door which is closed and a few opened windows. Inside, he sees the movement of three men, true to Brother Timothy's story. They seem to be per-occupied doing queer motions and moving around the stable. Also important, is that he does not hear the whining of horses coming from the stable either, especially considering the fact that animals are uneasy next to Kindred, which means that most likely, there are no animals in that stable.

Themistokles looks down, and quietly says to the group

"No more sentries. One door. Several large windows as entrances. Three people. Moving strange. No noises from stable. Presuming no animals."

He considers a moment, then adds, "Window breach would take some climbing."

Neith

As Tenbit held the man and Themistokle tied him Neith reached out and applied pressure to his shoulder until she was happy that any fighting ability would take a while to recover, if Tenbit was to watch him he would not be caught suprised.

She than broke eye contact as they took him to the man into the room, and watched as the Brujah began to climb - noting the noise with disdain, the man had apologised for his intruption and it had been her fault that she had been spotted at all earlier so she didn't begrudge that - but the noise was grating.

Upon his return and plan she offered an alternative "I believe that we may be better listening to the sister and questioning this man. If our learned friend here" nodding Edouard as he remained out of the vision of the captive "can confirm what this man is saying and question him - and can use his abilities to confirm if he is tainted by dark powers we will know where we stand a bit clearer. Tenbit has training in ensuring that people talk should be prove reluctant", she offered her Ghoul a smile - he had maintained a drawn weapon on the man since he had been told to guard him and was prepared to strike when needed.

Noting the falling rocks again "Once we have that we I am convinced that rocks falling from damaged buildings kill a few people every year" they could at least turn that to their advantage.

"We still don't know if there are any others of our kind involved let alone the enemy we have been told of, and we do not have the right of destruction even if we did know, caution might be worth using" this would depend on what was said.

"If he remains unharmed, and is found to be untainted, I would like to make him mine. I need a ghoul, and this one will work nicely." Sister Cecilia says, determined to try to save this man's life, if he is indeed worthy. "While your ghoul interrogates this guard, perhaps you and I could go in for a closer look?" she says to Neith, acknowledging that the little girl seems more observant and definitely quieter than the Brujah.

"No" it was blunt "he has reason to dislike me and that is a risk I am unhappy to accept after the blood warps his prioritys to you - poorly controled ghouls are a risk, and should not be created on a whim. I will either take him or end him - likely the latter", the woman seemed to be overly focused on this one mortal "if you need a protector I can arrange a more suitable one for you".

"Is he speaking french - Tebnit does not, he can assist with the wet work but someone else would have to do the asking", nodding to Edouard "but you are right we should explore".

"Tebnit assist - kill him at the first sign of serious trouble, and don't allow him the availability to scream" the man wrapped his hand around the captives neck ready to cut off the air as needed, while the blade was held to his back.

With that Neith stepped out to examine the stable, moving cautiously as she did so.

Edouard remains with Teibnet and the prisoner. Once the others have gone he looks the man over before speaking in French.

"You should know, they're most unhappy with you. I however have no wish to make much of a fuss. Cooperate and you will be sent on your way."

He reaches into his belt and brings out a dagger and cup. Kneeling down he makes a small pinprick to the man's cheek.

"Resist, and you will be disposed of...without fuss. You can start with identifying yourself"

He catches the small bead of blood that would well up from the man's cheek on his finger and brings it to his lips, letting the knowledge contained within flow into him.

As the Tremere takes a sip of the sentry's blood, he is able to notice an absence of Cainite vitae within him, meaning that tied in front of him was a healthy Kine. In the past, he had suffered from Dysentery in the past, a common case seen in armies, but has made a full recovery.

"Please don't hurt me! My name is Gaspard de Saint Jean de Luz from Gascony. I participated in the disastrous Battle of Hattin and ever since then, I've been selling my sword to the highest bidder. I'm just doing my job!"

Cecilia, Neith & Themistokles

As the Brujah takes a position behind some abandoned crates across the stables, the Cappadocian and the Setite sneak closer for a look inside. True to what Brother Timothy had said, they see a trio of heavily robed men chanting in a language that sounds rough and snarling. Two of them have their back towards the stable's entrance, while one of them, a short swarthy man in black robes, adorned with mystical looking items who has a ferocious black mustache and a receding hairline seems to be leading the others to chant as all three of them wield bloody daggers. This man is facing towards the stable door, and may have noticed Cecilia and Neith had he not been focusing on the ground, where they are inscribing weird symbols on the smooth dirty floor. They seem to have almost completed the pattern. In the center of the room lies a woman's body encased in a silk shroud that has been splattered with blood.

Coptic? she considered she had heard it spoken in egypt years ago and while she didn't understand it it was distinctive enought to recall the sound of it spoken.

Still from the shadows she could review for the more pressing details - was she dealing with the dead or could she simply move to have them all killed without any real issues other than a potential apology.

It is impossible for Neith to determine the nature of the two cloaked figures as they have their back turned at her. However she begins to focus on the man who seems to be the ringleader. As she studies him, it becomes obvious to Neith that the man is not even bothering to pass off as Kine. She is dealing with Kindred. All of a sudden, as the man is leading the other two to chant, its as if he feels Neith's stare weighing on him, he looks towards the stable entrance, alarm clearly written on his face.

The chanting stops all of a sudden, and without uttering a word, the other two turn around towards the stables entrance as if someone had silently warned them about a presence, with their bloody daggers in their hand they begin to move in Neith's and Cecilia's direction.

As the man in the purple robe approaches, Cecilia throws the rock she had gathered at him. From such a short distance it strikes the man's chest. Unfortunately the Cappadocian is unable to gather enough strength for her throw, and so the rock bounces harmlessly off his chest. Grinning maliciously, the man attempts to slash Cecilia.

The brown robed assailant at this point has noticed something. Seems that an arrow has burrowed into the side of his head, underneath his eye.

Neith

She cursed herself, first the sentry saw her, than the leader, than this newest assailiant - her sire had often critisised her on not spending enough time on the supernatural elements of her training ... but she had a financial empire to build Set blast it.

Her attempt to ward off the man had actually likely merely placed her arms in close proximity to him for grabbing - and not she had hit a wall. With luck Tebnit would kill his captive and rush to her rescue - if he heard the commotion and didn't merely feel it was not his place.

Still there was still time to salvage this if she began acting correctly.

In a blur of motion, Themistokles throws his bow, and taking out a wooden stake, runs by Cecilia who is by the stable door, still struggling with her assailant and bursting into the stable throws himself against the man in the black robe as he attempts to stake the Kindred's heart. The Brujah's aim is true, and his reckless tactic nearly succeeds as the stake is driven deeper into his enemy's chest. However the stake chips the ribcage causing it to stop short from the heart. For a moment the man focuses on his enemy, as his fingers begin to tremble under an invisible power. His eyes seem to radiate an aura of power as he makes a motion towards Themistokles, as if he was beckoning him to approach.

All of a sudden, Themistokles is wracked with unspeakable pain throughout his entire body. Every vein in his body feels as if hot molten lead had been poured through it as the Brujah's vitae begins to seep from his mouth, nose, ears and eyes to form a bloody globe in front of the robed man.
