The Warhammer Models Thread

It would appear that the old threads for this sort of thing perished quite some time ago (possibly after a traumatic painting accident), so I decided I'd take it upon myself to revive the series. This thread is for the exhibition and critique of miniature models, generally from the Warhammer 40k or Warhammer Fantasy Battle product lines (though, I see no reason we couldn't have the occasional outlier).

Previous Threads

So much to do! So many things to build, and to paint! And a thread to name! Here we go!

The main reason I decided to bring back the modeling thread, at least in the moment, was a burning need to create a build-diary for my various projects, and attempt to share them with the Playground for comment, critique, and recruits to my eternal Waaagh!

Speaking of Waaagh!s, how are your boyz supposed to get to one without a fast and (not particularly) sturdy Trukk to zip them across the battlefield? I have no idea, so let's build ourselves a Trukk!

Phase 1

I picked this little number up from the dollar store, and since the plastic was much too clean, gave it a quick rub-down with some sandpaper. I'd really prefer my glue to stick to the model once I get going. Now, I've got a whole pile of different orky bits from various kits, mostly vehicles, and I'm itching to make this thing a little more interesting. It's my first conversion project in a while, so I'll probably be staying fairly conservative with my ideas (on an ork scale, mind you) to keep from overwhelming myself with the possibilities. Onward we go!

Phase 2

So, first things first, I disassembled it into its component pieces. Not a whole lot of them, which is probably a good thing, because I'd be pretty annoyed if I lost any. It's also a good thing that those black racks actually come out--they'd be a pain to glue anything to and/or paint otherwise, I suspect.

And now we have most of a driver! I had to melt his knees to straighten his legs, and now his pants are a little saggy-looking in places, but at least he sits comfortably now. Previously, he was like a half-mile from the back of the seat, and everything was terrible. Also, I used a special weapon torso (you can tell because he's supposed to be wearing a backpack full of either bullets or rockets), because it looks like he's wearing a seatbelt! And gave him a helmet! Safety first!

And then I added some minor vehicle bits to make the front end more exciting. I'm sure I'll add more, but not until I see how it looks while sitting on the reinforced ram part attached to the bumper on the black piece (see disassembly, above). I mean, this trukk doesn't even have any teef yet. Or dakka. This is a sad trukk. But it'll only get better from here. Oh, the hood-engine is from the dakkajet kit, if you couldn't tell. Slight modification, lots of scraping and glue, and I think it looks pretty appropriate.

I need an actual hood ornament. Like, a tiny lunging squig. I wonder...

There we go. Not bad, for an evening of very distracted pseudo-work. I'm sure I'll add some less aggravating bits tomorrow, when I figure out where I put my plasticard and start making me some kustom details instead of just scavenging my buckets of vehicle bits.

A propos Waagh. Our shop has, every year, a campaign of Ork Races. They started as Ork Trukk races, but have since evolved into "any orky model". One of the shop owners wrote 200 pages of rules, including a vehicle builder with upgrades, and everything.

This year, I'm competing with the ICBO (Intercontinental Ballistic Ork) Mk I. Which is a big mek on a skateboard, with a cruise missile strapped to his back.

Already built and painted the basic model, but for race two, I need to add more weapons.

For the hood ornament: A gretchin holding up a squig, like the rolls-royce hood ornament.

For the name... Mek Do And Mend?

I might as well contribute with my own most recent conversion, a Farseer on jetbike. I wanted her to stand out from the rest of the bikes (I hate HQ models that blend in) while also feeling a bit more "classic wizard" than one riding a flying motorbike.

The store owner offered to post a photo of it on the webpage when it was painted, which should hopefully motivate me a bit.

I should also post some older ones - i've got a nearly entirely converted inquisition list.

Hm. The Farseer looks lovely, but I would have cut the harlequin ornaments and given the driver a different head, maybe?

The head conversion would have been/be very tricky - the necks of harlequin riders and jetbikers/guardians fit together entirely differently. My thinking was to just run some allied harlequins as a fluff thing.

Don't have a camera right now, but here are some photos of work in progress stuff from last month.

My most converted Black Templar, no longer has a battlefield role due to edition changes.

I have my Blood Angels already posted in this thread on another forum (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306834-angels-encarmine-4th-company/)

I made a lot of progress with my Trukk today, fiddling with numerous different bits and baubles, and almost losing my fingertips a few times.

Phase 3
http://i.imgur.com/xfSCjLS.jpg?1

Every good trukk needs a whole mess of armor plates bolted onto the shell of the vehicle to make it tough durable more orky. So, I took an old used-up giftcard and hacked it into pieces and started gluing different shapes all over the trukk.

http://i.imgur.com/MLmTWIz.jpg?1

The view of the other side. You may notice I ripped one of the wheels off--I was experimenting with the possibility of armoring them up, kind of like the official trukk model, so that wheel's sitting on my work table, partially wrapped in ultra-thin plasticard. Didn't finish gluing everything down, so I'll see how it looks tomorrow.

Also, what good is a trukk without a massive exhaust pipe to belch huge clouds of black smoke into the air? No good, that's what. So I decided to use the biggest, orkiest piping I had on hand as a tailpipe extension, and chain it to the rear window (we wouldn't want it falling off, and obviously we can't make it any smaller) with a bit scavenged from some trukk crossbars.

Speaking of the crossbar (The black thing. I dunno what it would really be called.), I tried gluing a bunch of pointy bits to it, but they just kind of fell off, so I've scrapped the black bars and am instead going to use the whole bed as a place to mount a big ole rokkit launcha system. I'm making it extra-big, so I could easily have it count as either a Looted Wagon, or some other kind of Gun-Wagon-thing. Whatever Forgeworld was calling them. Anyways, it's gonna be sweet, and almost like a Hydra Flak Battery, or something. Still working out the kinks.

Might as well check in with the pilot while we're here. Oh, look, he's got a co-pilot now!

I found that little guy on my Stormboyz sprue, and despite accidentally melting part of his hand (and trying to sort of mangle it back the way I wanted), I think he's going to end up looking pretty good. He's sitting on a looted ammo crate, and keeps a spare rokkit behind him within reach of the gunner in the back, just in case the trukk DOESN'T blow up by, like, Turn 2. It pays to be prepared. His head didn't want to stay glued on, and his legs are around here...somewhere....but whatever, I'll have the Dok fix him up eventually.

So, yeah, progress!

Unrelated, I also wanted to show off what my Skitarii looked like a few days ago, before I bought some new layer paint to highlight with. Hopefully I'll make some time to finish up their tiny details soon, so I can post the more finalized versions.

A Gretchin tied to the front grill, with its head sticking up above the hood so that its face resembles a terrified* Jaguar hood ornament. Bonus points for some ragged streaks of red where some of da Boyz tried to paint him to match the trukk.

I really need to get a better camera for my minis, but here's a shot of a limited edition skinwolf I managed to pick up off ebay a few weeks ago. Really happy with how it turned out.

Haven't finished any Warhammer models for a while, though Celestine's next on the list.

In the meantime, I've got some Malifaux:

I think Hannah turned out better. Lilith's okay, but I've done better.
