View Full Version : How to do additional attacks with one free hand?

I have a build that has sneak attack, and I am aiming at doing more than one attack to maximize this.

The build can't accurately use two-weapon fighting because he needs a free hand to attack and use his abilities.

Its a goblin character with the unchained build and swashbuckler thrown in for other abilities.

Would you recommend a bite attack or something more?

(the new sneak attack effects are great and an additional attack without waiting to be level 8 would be great, regardless of the output)

Thanks!

Pick up Improved Unarmed Strike and attack with that empty hand?

TWF OffHandbook (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?279079).

In Core, armor spikes and unarmed strikes work well. A light shield lets you hold/carry objects in that hand, but I'm not entirely clear if that allows manipulating objects (such as ammunition or spell components).

Outside of Core... Dragon Tail + Prehensile Tail works as one example. Dwarven Buckler-Axe can also be used as an offhand weapon if you can spare a feat for EWP. Another recent discovery... Claw Bracers (A&EG) can be used as primary/offhand weapons, and still leave the hands free (even allows claw attacks!).

A bite attack generally won't work with the TWF/offhand rules, because natural weapons get their own set of rules/peculiarities. The rules don't explicitly state this, but natural weapons usually can't be used as an offhand attack. If a natural weapon isn't the primary attack, then by the rules in the Monster Manual it's a secondary attack.

Actually, if you want to get into the pedantics of it, you could probably use a secondary natural weapon as an offhand attack, but the natural weapon rules don't allow you to attack more than once with a natural weapon on your turn. So while it might work for just plain ol' TWF, you couldn't take advantage of the second or third attack provided by Improved/Greater TWF.

You don't need to fill the off-hand to fight with two weapons: an off-hand unarmed strike (a gauntlet works fine too) or armor spikes is all you need. Check this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?279079-3-5-The-TWF-OffHandbook) well-written handbook if you're interested in other inputs.
If you want your off-hand free and you aren't interested in TWF because you don't want to suffer to-hit penalties, you'll need to get some natural attacks. What level are you and what resources do you have on hand? Also, what books are allowed?

EDIT: Ninja'd by THE handbook writer. Wow.

A 1 level dip into monk will get you an extra attack with flurry.

Given that monks and battle dancers can strike with any part of their body, it might be possible to attack MWFighting style using...

a handheld main-hand weapon (or claw bracer)
the aforementioned claw bracer as an off-hand weapon
off-hand unarmed strikes using other various other parts of the body

Kneeblade or bootblade, and Natural Weapons.

My favorites are Draconic Claws (from the feat or Draconic Template), Dragon Tail, and a Cloistered Cleric dip for Travel devotion and the Hunger domain. Somewhere around there it is advantageous to grab Multiattack. Use a primary knee/bootblade, then secondary claws, tail, and bite.

Note that if this is pathfinder you can't make offhand attacks (whether unarmed or via armor spikes) while using a two-handed weapon. So you'd need a natural weapon of some sort. A race with natural claws is the easiest way to do this (maybe Tiefling, or one of the Skinwalkers).
