Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 851 through 860.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283609).

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34791)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on June 10th, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last time, :vaarsuvius: 842 All in the Family (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0842.html)....

I...

Err...

...

Yeah. Got nothing this time. :smalleek:

I think I'll just try to avoid eye contact with it and send its on its way to the Best of the Hundred tournament.

...

Anyway.

Yeah. Still need a moment here. While I try to process all of that why not vote in...

Even though I liked 859 ("HOLY!"), my vote goes for #860. After all, it's not a bug, it's a feature...

Oh man. Upping the challenge rating on this decision...

After much thought, it's 859. Last panel. (The rest of it is pretty good too.)

860: Wasn't Going to Listen to Orders Anyway is great. The whole sequence is great, really, but I especially like it when a plan actually works well. Additionally, Sabine's ominous farewell to Nale is done incredibly effectively. Props to The Giant for packing so much foreshadowing into three panels of an otherwise packed strip.

I do wish I could vote for #859. The reveal of "HOLY." is magnificent.

#856
The mummies are an effective flip of something we treated as a universal rule (X'd eyes = dead/destroyed), making them seem less like a mutated monster and more like a creepy moving corpse than typical undead. And Girard choosing to only use family to defend his Gate only to be accidentally targeted by a family-killing spell by someone else on a quest to defend the Gates is indeed one of the greatest evil punchlines of all time.

This is a very good set of strips. I see myself easily voting for half of them. However, the art in #859 still amazes me today.

I would be surprised if the Holy Word or 860 didn't take this one, and maybe deservedly so. But personally, my favorite is 856. There's something off-putting about it that I like. Nale's self-deluding assurance that he's in control, Malack's creepy mummification of the Draketeeth, and the punchline with Qarr discovering just what we did back in 842, but having a very perverse reaction to it made me shiver as much as it made me laugh. Evil adventuring parties, man. What a bunch of jerks.

EDIT: I want to amend this to say that Sabine's "I love you... forever..." in 860 honestly breaks my heart and was very nearly enough to get me to vote for that one instead. Powerful stuff.

Holy 859.

There were other good contenders, but it's too epic to not fote for it.

854 for reasonable adults talking out their differences. Still comes as a surprisingly satisfying bit of character development.

854. That conversation was very unexpected.

859 and 860 are both good, but I'm going for 860. Sabine's goodbye to Nale has even more tragedy to it now that we know where this is leading, and the tactics of the Order's whole ambush are excellent.

#0859 Smoked. HOLY crap.

This was really Durkon's shining moment of the book up to that point. :smallfrown:

I'll take 859 over 860 - the artwork, the setup is just magnificent, and while it is nice to see them reap the rewards in 860, it's 859 that does the heavy lifting. Score that one for :durkon:

Hmm, all of 858-860 are pretty good, but I think I'll go with 859 for the gorgeous art effects of Holy Word.

Some really nice strips. Overall it might not be the best strip in this batch, but I can't resist to vote for the last panel of 856 - I Guess You Had to Be There

Reviewing these strips I almost want to throw a pity vote to 855 simply for the bliss of the "Huh, I really felt there was going to be a cutaway panel there" line. Perfect setup and delivery. But 860 beats it out. Poor Nale. Makes a check to overcome deafness and the spell still doesn't work out. Typical, really.

And with that....

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

:durkon: 859 - Smoked (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0859.html) is the winner this week. It now moves on to the Best of the Hundred tournament.
