I'm rather confused on this feat (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/monstrous-companion). I'm looking at possibly picking it up at level 9 for my druid, but I want to know if it's worthwhile. Please help me understand how it works. Here also is the link for Leadership (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/leadership---final#TOC-Monstrous-Mounts), which has a more complete list of monstrous companions and their "effective cohort levels."

Here's how I think it works:

A) I look at the chart,
B) Find the effective cohort level based upon my Druid level, and
C) Choose from any monstrous companion of that cohort level or lower.
D) If the companion I choose has a lower effective cohort level than my druid level allows, I apply class levels to that companion to make up the difference.

So, let's say I take the feat at level 9. That makes my Effective Cohort Level 6, so I can choose, for example, a Pegasus (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/magical-beasts/pegasus). At druid level 12, my Effective Cohort Level changes to 7, so what happens? Can I either select a new companion, or am I stuck with the Pegasus and slap on one class level?

Another question: How do you pick up the more powerful monstrous companions, such as a Dragon Horse, which has an Effective Cohort Level of 16, when a level 20 Druid caps out at an Effective Cohort Level of 12?
