View Full Version : An Ode to Roy

A sorrow lamentation made in honor of Roy. Feel free to post your own lamentations here also.

I cannot believe that Roy Greenhilt is now dead.
Was blasted off a dragon and landed on his head.

What will they all do, their leader now no more.
Its not like they can buy a new one at the grocery store

Who will take up the mantle and lead the Order of the Stick?
I hope it is not Hinjo, as he is acting like a *censored*

If Thog was the leader, the comic would be fun.
However, no offense meant, he often acts pretty dumb.

May I be the first to point out that Hinjo isn't exactly acting like a *censored*? OK, he may be a little on the stuffy side but he is a paladin, it's in the job description. And he's a HELL of a lot more likable than Miko the Maniac. All I'm asking is, give Hinjo the benefit of the doubt.

Other than that, a nice tribute to Roy. Better than I could do at the moment.

Also, 2 points. Thog barely has the intelligence to be a minion.:smalltongue:
Also, as was mentioned elsewhere in the forum, "The First Step is a Doozy" implies that Roy's death is his first step towards becoming a true hero. Since he is dying as the first step, it's a doozy. Pretty logical, don't you think?
Disclaimer: This was not my idea, it was somebody else's. I don't want to take credit for someone else's hard work.

Actually, Hinjo is only acting like a *censored*. Miko is acting like a *censored* *censored* *censored* maniac.

Right on the back of the neck. If the Mortal Kombat characters saw how Xykon brews up Fatalities, they would have been green with envy. Except for Scorpion, he has already done better.

After great thought and consideration I have decided to post my humble funerary ode to the (currently) late Roy Greenhilt. And now to the tune of the closing song of The Black Adder.

The Death of Roy Greenhilt

He faced his deathly frightful foe:
But the good Roy is now dead.
Learned too late and to his great woe
Tis best not to land on one’s own head.

Roy Greenhilt, Roy Greenhilt,
your death causes bitter but brief pain:
Roy Greenhilt, Roy Greenhilt:
But you soon will live again.

Note: Roy is one of my few favorite Lawfuls to date.

THE AIRBORNE SONG

Sung to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic:

He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright.
He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight.
He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar.
You ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

"Is everybody happy?" cried the sergeant looking up.
Our hero feebly answered, "Yes", and then they stood him up.
He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock.
He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop.
The silk from his reserve spilled out and wrapped around his legs.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

The risers swung around his neck, connectors cracked his dome.
Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones.
The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

The days he lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind.
He thought about the girl back home, the one he left behind.
He thought about the medicos and wondered what they'd find.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild.
The medics jumped and screamed with glee, rolled up their sleeves and smiled.
For it had been a week or more since last a 'chute had failed.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

He hit the ground, the sound was "Splat," his blood went spurting high.
His comrades they were heard to say, "A helluva way to die."
He lay there rolling 'round in the welter of his gore.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.

There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the 'chute.
Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit.
He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Oh, so this has to rhyme? Let's go crazy

Grieviest of Green Hilts

This is actually a walz!

How green was his hilt, and how strong was his Stick:
The merry Order he built, despite it making him sick.
How green was his hilt, when land'd beside his flesh?
Both fell with no guilt, heroically in that mesh.
Togeth'r they'd fall, as togeth'r they'd fought
Bringing justice to all, to self naught they brought
Fell down from the skies, was what everyone said;
Dropped down from a dragon by Xykon the undead.

Grieve for Greenhilt! Have a drink, wear a kilt.
Grieve for Greenhilt! cry the Order he built.
Grieve for Greenhilt! Have a drink, feel no guilt.
Grieve for Greenhilt! Or drown in fish milt.

It's a catchy tune to cry into your pint to!

Jumped on a zombie dragon

Awww... Almost makes me want more characters to die...

Roy, you died like you lived, with a great sense of honor and justice and very little pre-planning.

Almost feels like a remake of the old python-song is in order, though I lack the energy... You know, Brave, brave Ser Greenhilt ran forth from Azure Keep. He was not afraid to die, brave, brave Ser Greenhilt. He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways, brave brave brave brave Ser Greenhilt.

He was not in the least bit scared to be carved up by a hob, or to have his manly chest by some arrows broken. To have his feelings split and his pri-ide burned away, and his dignity hacked and mangled, brave Ser Greenhilt.

Uh... this is the hard part. Help please? : )

Through dungeon halls he wandered
With his team of 2-D friends.
With a mighty heave of fury
Thought he 'Xykon met his end.'

'Till ghostly father spectre
Said his efforts were in vain.
His nemesis was still alive!
(or dead? Such thoughts cause pain...)

Atop a ghastly dragon corpse
Mortal enemies met once more.
Despite a reforged blade,
The lich managed to even the score.

Do you remember young Roy Greenhilt?
Sword shining for all to see?
A gentleman of fortune,
Of unmatched quality!

I do know what song it is, and don't call me Shirley ;)

Compare:

His head smashed in and his heart cut out
and his liver removed and bowels uncleffed
and his nostrils raped and his penis...
Sir Robin: That's ah... that's enough music for now, lads.

. . . or take arrows for bards or get finger of death'd;
to a dragon behead or get meteor swarmed;
to fall tumbling for miles or go SPLAT on the stones
and lie broken and beat with those Xs for eyes . . .

Try singing along. The meters match closely enough for parody song work, if not for Shakespearean sonnet parody. If you don't know the rhythm as it's in my head, then try matching up the "and" of the original with the "or" of my version.

Since Roy is dead, they just got one more line in. He couldn't exactly interrupt, after all.

Though I do admit, I should have closed with the Trouser Titan.

Hey, I kinda think it's a good thing that Roy is dead, at least for a little while. I don't like him. He's a "*censored*." Sorry for the loss, but it's worth it, he'll be brought back; I trust Rich, he's a good dude, and he'll write it out the way it's supposed to happen.

If Roy comes back, though, I'd be just as happy. It would be very difficult to transisition to a new main character.

I can still remember
How Roy Greenhilt used to make me smile.
And I knew if he had his pick
He’d still lead the Order of the Stick
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But evil Xykon made me shiver
With every murder he’d deliver.
Bad news for Sapphire City;
Without Shojo and his kitty.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I saw Roy’s dragon ride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day that Greenhilt died.

So bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”
"This’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter over castle tower,
Xykon flew off with a meteor shower,
20d6 high and falling fast.
Roy landed on his head with a splat.
Haley cried, Durkon saw through the glass
Roy had X’s for eyes, meaning that he had passed

Now for Belkar battle was sweet perfume
While Elan played a marching tune.
And how V's casting hands did dance.
Oh, but we never had a chance!
‘Cause Redcloak tried to take the field;
The hobgoblins refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day that Greenhilt died?

We started singing,
“Bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.”
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”

But then again, that dragon was pretty high

'Tis you, 'tis you Hinjo owes and must revive
But come ye back when the hobbos are dead, 'yo
Or when Haley's hushed and comes up with the dough

Oh Roy, oh Roy, we all love you so.

And if back you come, when all the defenders are dying
And your allies are dead, as dead they well may be
You'll come and find the place where they are lying
And Hinjo will pay a cleric or find someone to do it free

And Belkar shall be back here, tho' little trust you have for he

Thank you very much!

However, feel free to add the 7 additional verses yourself!

Well, here's a start...

Now the Order of the Stick is on its own
With Elan’s singing making everyone groan
Exactly like it used to be

When Haley wept for the hilt of green
Durkon knew she had to lead the team
And she swore that Azure City would be free

Oh and while great Thor was looking down
His cleric didn’t show a single frown
Even though Roy’s face was burned
He knew Xykon would be turned

And the dragon’s head had hit its mark
And the Death Knight was sent back to the dark
But the city’s future was looking stark
The day that Greenhilt died

They were singing…

Chorus

I met a girl whose cloak was blue
But it had faded in its hue
‘Cause she had fallen yesterday

I went and knocked on the Oracle’s door
Where I’d heard the prophecy days before
But the magic mouth said the kobold was away

And through the breach the hobbos streamed
The samurai lived their gory dream
But not a word was spoken
The siege it must be broken

And the paladins I admire most
And Elan with his witty riposte
Knew that Roy was now a ghost
The day that Greenhilt died

Here comes the furious Xykon back again

Alive in triumpg, and Roy slain?
Away to heaven respective lenity,
and fire-eyed be my conduct now!
Now, Xykon, take the "villain" back again
That late thou gavest me, for Roy's soul
Is but a little way above our heads,
Staying for thin to keep him company.
Either thou or I, or both, must go with him.

Sung to the Tune of Delilah from Xykon's perspective

I saw the men on the walls when I passed by Wall
I saw the fighter waving his green hilt again
He was my Enemy!
As he jumped up I thought he must be insane

My, my, my, Roy Greenhilt!
Why, why, why, Roy Greenhilt!

I could see that I was too good for him
So I turned and said "Just look sonny Jim..
Go train with that sword, and adventure or maybe a few
Come back and face me when we're at a climax!"
He Stood there Shouting!
I flew off, he fell down and he shouted no more!

My, my, my Roy Greenhilt!
Why, why, why Roy Greenhilt!

So before they try to shoot me some more
Forgive me Roy Greenhilt I just couldn't take any more!

And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”
"This’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter over castle tower,
Xykon flew off with a meteor shower,
20d6 high and falling fast.
Roy landed on his head with a splat.
Haley cried, Durkon saw through the glass
Roy had X’s for eyes, meaning that he had passed

Now for Belkar battle was sweet perfume
While Elan played a marching tune.
And how V's casting hands did dance.
Oh, but we never had a chance!
‘Cause Redcloak tried to take the field;
The hobgoblins refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day that Greenhilt died?

We started singing,
“Bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.”
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”
"This’ll be the day that I die."

Best one yet. Now we just need... what? 3 more verses?

It looks like, Roy won't be revived,
But Rich is as clever as five,
So you never know what he might do.
So Hinjo might have a diamond mine,
To revive Roy in the nick of time,
Just so he can really, save the day.

Of course Xykon might win the day,
But he'll screw it up, anyway,
And Redcloak will get mad,
And the Monster will be sad.
Because he won't get his big reveal.
And Roy's Dad will his big speil,
'Bout how a mage wouldn't need the heal,
But Roy, the Fighter died.

He'll be singing,
“Bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.”
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”
"This’ll be the day that I die."

He'll be up in Celestia,
And maybe he'll see Celia,
Maybe we'll find out more soon.
But all we really know for sure,
Is that his heart and soul are pure,
At least he's closer, than that fallen, Miko goon.
But in the end he really died.
He even went all cross-eyed.
His sword fell down beside him,
As he broke most of his limbs.
Yes the Fighter we admire most,
Fell from the sky, and now he's toast.
Though he might just come back a ghost.
Yes Roy, the Fighter died.

And I was singing,
“Bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.”
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”
"This’ll be the day that I die."

We were singing,
“Bye-bye, lawful fighter guy.”
Took the blasting from the casting
But the fall was too high.
And the Sapphire Guard was drinkin’ saki and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.”

well, those are some sweet songs  but everyone knows, that as a main character, Roy has the power of not dying, so yeah.

I simply must contribute... hmm ::whips out beret and fountain pen::

Brave Fighter Greenhilt
Your anger blossomed when heard
"What's your name again?"

Nothing on Earth stays forever
But none of your deeds were in vain
Deep in our hearts you will live again
You're gone to the home of the brave...

- The chorus of Glory to the Brave, by Hammerfall. I thought it appropriate.

Okay, some haiku for you...

Oh! Son of Greenhilt,
Heir to vain oaths unheeded;
When falls your sun, alas!

Hmmm... I guess that, instead of a Haiku, what would be needed here is a traditional Jisei no ku (death poem), written in the form of a waka (5-7-5-7-7 syllables). Of course, it is problematic whether Roy would have had time to actually write one during his fall, but... Hmmm...

World is in danger;
Did what my duty told me.
Fought against Xykon.
Sun setting fast in the west,
How quickly things come to pass.

(after all, it was considered bad form to actually mention "death" in your death poem. You went on with metaphors like the sunset, sakura flowers falling, etc.)

So the chorus to Flash of the Blade by Iron Maiden seems appropriate here...

You'll die as you lived
In a flash of the blade
In a corner forgotten by no-one
You lived for the touch
For the feel of the steel
One man, and his Honor.

And JoseB, Sweet Miracle is a good song

Goodbye Miss Starshine from Roy the earth says hello.
Roy crashed and died before I say oh no.
Goodbye Roy do not be very mad
According to spoilers Celia she announce your a dad.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Believe it or not he fell through the air.
I thought he would be saved and be free.
And by the way nobody save day.
Please I just plain blame no spells from V sorry guys.

------------------------------------------------------------

Roy was bound
To get free of the ground
He got jumped very far
From ring from our star
Of course is was from Belkar from Belkar.
-------------------------------------------------------------

We are villians we are bad enemy
Do not blame us for hero Roys death.

We are just little roaches now we are not mean.
Plus have role in story we could be in any scence.
Better than working for WOTC finally.
Real better deals here now as you can be free.

We are the villians we are bad guys.
Hope the death one her does not hurt you.

Like there are many surprise
Right before my floating yellow eyes
The war is getting late
Say Redcloak what gate.

We are villians we are thefoes.
Please do not hold it against us.

I Xykon have my crown
Plus I knocked Roy down
Wait I have no voice box how I sing.
Great another plot weird thing.

We are villians we are bad guys.
Maybe now some word from big evil.

This a legal word from lawyers who come by two.
Who regular come through.
For this plot is alot better so do not sue.
It better than lame DCs 52 between me and you.

We are the villians we are forces.
Great if we start fighting.

This Belkar I sneaked over here.
Like dress as medium sized creature no fear.
Course on May 4 I will be free.
Ditching the war to see great Spiderman 3 jist with glee.

Door opens walks in Linear gang singing.

Hey do they know that Roy has died at battle all.
Free the Linear Guild let us out some time in the year.

Lawyers respond guys this A list villians B list is foriegn room.
By the way Belkar might sneak in your section.
Great Belkar leaves the back door.
Hope the rest of the groups miss him.

To the tune of "When Johnny comes marching home from war"

When Greenhilt protects us all from war
Huzza! Huzza!
Combatting the litch and gave what for
Huzza! Huzza!
His blade flashed green as he chopped the head
Not long after, he fell down dead
Now let's all drink to Roy
The Hero of Azure's war

Ok, let's try this, from Elan, the big Eagles fan:

On the wall of the city, under sun's shiny glare
I see Roys on the dragon, rising up through the air
And he's flying away now, on a perilous flight
I'll have to say that was brave thing to do
I hope he'll be all right

There he stands on a dragon
I heard his sword hit that lich
And I just kept on thinking
"Take that, you son of a b***c"

And Roy keeps on attacking, and he cuts dragon's head
Now he is really in danger
Facing to that undead...

Hoping that Roy will prevail somehow
Yes I really do
Yes I really do
Yes I really do
Roy, you be careful, keep your footing now
'Cause if you will die.. I'll break out and cry

Xykon is evil and twisted, his level's higher than Roy
I sure hope Roy knows what he should do to destroy
And they're flying away now, and with the feeling of dread
I see Roy falling down... low HPs... almost dead

So I join rest of party
I was ready to mourn
This is worst thing that happened ever since I was born
And I still see the party keeping up the fight
Killing up those orange fiends
So they'll win the right...

Soon we will be pooling our money now
For a "Raise dead" spell
For a "Raise dead" spell
For a "Raise dead" spell
We took some heavy losses, but we'll win somehow
Double the attack! We want our leader back!

Heh, my attempt was closest to the actual strip. Also;

I used to think that I could go on
And life was more than Elan's songs
But now Xykon gave me a shove
I'm no longer bearing arms

If I could see it, then I could do it
If I just believed it, there was nothing to it

[chorus]
I believed I could fly
I believed I could knock Xykon from the sky
I thought about all night and on that day
Borrowed a ring and jumped away
I believed I could soar
I saw me making that zombie dragon roar
I believed I could fly
I believed I could fly
I believed I could fly

See I was on the verge of bringing it down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But I rejected his offer to spare me, oh

If I could see it, then I could do it
If I just believed it, there was nothing to it

[Repeat chorus]

Hey, cos I believed in me, oh

If I could see it, then I could do it
If I just believed it, there was nothing to it

[Repeat chorus]

Hey, if I just used the ring
I could fly
I could fly
I could fly, hey
If I just slashed the dragon's wings
I could make Xykon re-die
die-eye-eye
