View Full Version : [3.5] Adding spells to a spellbook.

As per the rules for adding spells to a spellbook, it would require me to study the spell (from a scroll or another book) for 8 hours to learn it, then 24 hours to scribe it.

Is there any way to lower the amount of time required for this?

Or conversely, for an Arcane caster capable of 6th lvl spells, any way to stop time to just take care of it then go back without needing the 32 real time hours.

standard answer's a fast time plane, but that doesn't seem especially practical for you at this level. the short answer is not really, at least not without using very powerful magic.

Finding a Boccob's Reading Room will let you do it in 9 hours.

Edit: Or can you get a friendly Cleric to Plane Shift you to a fast time plane?

Steal the other spellbook, and make sure you can make a DC 21 spellcraft check in your sleep. :smallbiggrin:

A Quill of Rapid Scrivening (DMGII) can scribe spells autonomously in ten minutes, but only from scrolls.

The answer is always Werewolf Queen Far Realm: 4.650 gp for two Plane Shift scrolls will let you learn any spell in 1 standard action. Just be sure to pile a good amount of spells to learn before doing this (+4650 gp/spell learned is madness, but if you have a reasonable stock of spells that you need to write in your spellbook it drops to +465 gp/spell or even less).

It gets better in a couple of levels, when you'll be able to cast Plane Shift on your own. Or if you have a 9th+ level Cleric in the party. And/or if you have a way to consistently succeed on a DC 20 Will save.

The plane shift idea sounds good. But how do you get the tuning forks needed?

You don't. From the SRD:

Activating a scroll requires reading the spell from the scroll. The character must be able to see and read the writing on the scroll. Activating a scroll spell requires no material components or focus. (The creator of the scroll provided these when scribing the scroll.)

If you are willing to spend 9k+ on scrolls for 1-time use, why not save the gp on a Tome of Ancient Lore? The version in CD is 22k. You need to spend a feat on True Believer though.

Contains every conceivable spell. As a bonus, spells take only half the time to prepare. Drawback is that there's a 10% chance you won't find the spell you want on that day.

For important spells that you always want to have, once you find it once, prep it first. Then use the following rule to scribe the prepared spell into your other spell book in half the time with half the cost:



...If she already has a particular spell prepared, she can write it directly into a new book at a cost of 100 gp per page (as noted in Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook, above). The process wipes the prepared spell from her mind, just as casting it would.


So by spending a spell slot for that day, it takes only 12 hours instead of 8 + 24.
Doesn't come close to doing it with a fast time plane, but you won't be burning 9k in consumables.

If DM considers copying from the tome to your spellbook to fall into the category of duplicating a spellbook, the gp cost per page is halved as well. (as described in the same SRD page above)



Alternatively, there's a cheesy method using Ancestral Relic Spellbook/Spellshard...
