So, in a game I am currently in, a character has a pet snake. For clarity's sake, I want the snake to have a name, but can't think of any. Do you have some names?

EDIT: Player has chosen the name "Pepper." Thread resolved.

If it is a constrictor, Strangles is a classic. Nagini from Harry Potter. Any good English name works: Emily, Bill, Tim, Dave, Rebecca, Rachel, Nigel etc.

Snake! Snake! Snaaaaake!
Snake! Snake! Snaaaaake!
Smash Bros Brawl crowd chant for Solid Snake for those who don't get it.

Snakeo! The exclamation point is part of the name.

Trouser seems to be an appropriate name for a snake.

Well if it's a Python...then Monty

Eve (or Adam) might be appropriate.

On a more serious note, unless its your character's pet snake, you should probably just let the owner name it.

For clarity's sake, I want the snake to have a name...

To be really really clear you could give a few more details, like:

-What type of snake is it?
-How big is it?
-Male or female?
-What genre is this for?
-Is the snake a familiar, animal companion, superhero sidekick, spirit animal, or is it a totally mundane, normal snake?
-What will be its role -- combat support, part of a circus/entertainment sideshow, decoration, mount, or just sitting in a glass cage in someone's room?
-Who is the character who has the snake?

So, there's a snake named Nate...

Ask the snake what he likes

Well if it's a Python...then Monty

Would have the disadvantage of being hard to distinguish from all the other pythons that people have thought it would be witty name "Monty".

I kinda like Sinuous as a name, from the Farthing Wood TV series and books:

Sinuous: "I, am Sinuoussss."
Adder: "Ssssso am I."

So we're naming it Nate? That's a pretty weird name... well, better Nate than Lever!

The necrosurgeon in my seafaring game has a snake named Nip.

Also among the party "pets" is a celestial dog named Hunter, a talking cat named Mani, and a flying whale that hasn't been named.

I had a character name his snake "Pepper", but that's because he was a wandering chef. I think it still fits if your pet snake is a girl.

Plissken.

Snake Plissken.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I missed this very recommendation downthread. That's two votes for Plissken.

We have no information. Who is naming the snake? What culture is the namer? What approach does that NPC have to naming conventions. And most important, why is an NPC naming a PC's snake?

I named my Ranger's Giant Owl, my superhero's sidekick, my Thief's horse, my Wizard's familiar, my Paladin's daughter, and my bards followers.

Why is the DM naming the snake?

The player has no idea what to name it. I'm asking for ideas.

Type: Poisonous.
Size: Small.
Gender: I haven't decided, probably not plot relevant.
Gerne: Classic adventure, trying to have a water theme.
Snake is a sidekick to a Barbarian.
Uses poison as support in combat.
The PC with the snake is barbarian.

Crawley! (Or Crowley, if you wanna class it up a bit)
It could always be named something 'badass' like deathfang.

Perhaps the barbarian could name the snake something in their native tongue?

You could name it something South American that nobody can pronounce!

Melinda (probably) originally meant "dark serpent".

I'd probably lean on sibilants.

Susie
Smithers
Slyther
Severus
Sybil
Samantha
Lissa
Sinuous
Cassius
Hista
Medusa
Glossy
Moccasin
Sidewinder
Sable

An alternative is to go for irony:
Spot
Rover
Fluffy
Fido
Cuddles

Nathan Scott Phillips.

Problem.

Solved.

Or use one of the name generator tables in various RPG splats. Is the character who owns it an elf or dwarf? Races of the Wild and Races of Stone have random elf and dwarf name tables, respectively.

Or for that matter you can google "random name generator" or a baby names website for ideas.
