What ways are there to get a level-scaling intelligent item (preferably a weapon), other than a Bladebound Magus?

Bribing your GM?

Level scaling items can be found in Pathfinder Unchained. They're probably not intelligent, though.

There are guidelines for making custom level scaling magic items, so making one that was intelligent shouldn't be a problem. And honestly, if the DM is cool with an intelligent item and with scaling items, it seems only natural that they would be ok with one that can last the campaign with you, especially if its integrated with your character concept.

I'd to by a convincing backstory added to from a sensible feat and trait choice.

1) Heirloom Weapon: Get a masterwork weapon and proficiency with it.
2) Weapon Focus: You've trained with that weapon all your life.
3) Maybe even some way to get an arcane bond item (Skill Focus: Arcane plus Eldritch Heritage (Arcane) would do that for you)

You can slap all this onto a single weapon (and any character with Cha 13+) and not only is making the item intelligent not such a great leap in power. You also have rules for how to upgrade that weapon without ruining WBL guidelines entirely.

Heirloom Weapon is even better now. Apparently in Melee Tactics Toolbox, there's a 350 gp alchemical item that turns melee weapons masterwork.

:smallconfused: Because 300GP (Masterwork Transformation) (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/m/masterwork-transformation) was too cheap? :smalltongue:

Yeah that option already exists, but it (Exemplar Weapon Salve) (http://www.archivesofnethys.com/EquipmentMiscDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Exemplar%20weap on%20salve) is cheaper then a second level spell cast from a NPC (400 GP). So if you are in a casterless party or want to start the game with Masterwork weapon it saves 50 gp.

Not inherently covered in the RAW, but one could apply the notion that character classes are something any intelligent creature can take on to the fact that intelligent magic items are intelligent, and then expend the resources to obtain the intelligent magic item (gp or questing or whatever), then take Leadership and declare your intelligent item your cohort.

You've now covered the costs of obtaining the base intelligent item, and you are justified in a specified level of cohort. Cohorts are technically allowed to be any level up to their cap based on your level and your Leadership score, so you could say your intelligent item is starting a new class at level 1.

It should level up swiftly and be pretty secure, since it's an item you're wielding. Choose a class that isn't hampered by its inanimate state. Probably a psion or the like, though if it talks out loud Bard or Marshal could work for their group-buffs. Choose spells without somatic components to know.

Technically a Blade Adept arcanist also get black blades. And technically they make their own, so...
