Well, when I was browsing my other online forums today, I encountered this press release. If this press release is true then we may see a StarCraft 2 in the near future. Well lets hope for the best.

On a sarcastic note, the Koreans should be happy, they have a new game to master.

Yay! Score!

...Wait, the Kerrigan race? Wasn't it that weird Hybrid race that Duran created?

Whatever, still awesome!

I agree. Especially with the 'kerrigan' race stuff. Xel'naga, or Hybrids. nothing else.

Hmm, well while the denouncements may be true, we will have to wait until May to be sure. So lets wait

Actually, now that I think about it, I can understand the reasoning behind their logic. It is known that Blizzard did say they would release information about something at the next world wide invitational, held in south korea. Where better to release information about a possible Starcraft 2 then in korea.

Wait, 2 new units for each race? That's crap. There's a team already making SC in the WC3 engine, I might play that instead.

Complete bull****. New race is obviously Hybrids, as seen in the secret mission in BW. 2 new units is expansion pack fare, not something for a sequel. Nobody shuts down old servers for games.

Well, if it's not in fact in the works, somebody put a whole lot of effort into faking this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3980165796053569246).

I'm not convinced that somebody didn't fake it, but it would definitely have taken considerable labor...

I've seen this before. It's a Command and Conquer mod.

Impressive though.

I'm holding out hopes for SC2. Still, I won't believe anything until the announcement is made. Only 3 days after all, I can wait. I've waited for, what, 8 years now?

Yep. I recognize the explosions and the unit veterancy sound effect from C&C: Generals. Also, the bullets and the style of movement for the tanks are remarkably similar.

It's been a long time, certainly, but as I've said in another thread, I think that if they do make a Starcraft 2, the balance of the races is gonna get messed with too much. I'd love to see another Starcraft game, but I don't know if I actually want one to be made.

People, I think this guy is on to something. I went on blizzard.com and it had a nice time-line on index. On past 2004, it had a big ?. Could blizz be hinting something?

I was expecting some kind of Starcraft MMO/RTS hybrid.

Blizzard has made so much money off World of Warcraft, I find it difficult to believe that they would release any new game that _wasn't_ an MMO.

Tycho said it best:

It may be difficult to imagine that the Massively Multiplayer RPG that was referenced on South Park will one day lose its cultural cache, but like inexorable winter that time is fast approaching and it must be prepared for. You may be certain that Vivendi Universal, the company that actually owns Blizzard, would like to continue seeing profits of this kind - and software you don't rent from them on a monthly basis ain't gonna cut it. I linked an interview with NCSoft's Richard Garriot once about the inevitability of "churn," a corrosive force that is simply endemic to the genre. Their approach to this dark energy is to create more games, each successive game being easier to create as a powerful suite of shared tools are put in place, so that when a player closes one account they just open up another account with the same company. That's why there's no "Station Pass" for NCSoft titles. They don't want you playing more than one. They want you moving with full focus from one game to the next, travelling from one end of their flashing lure to the other, paying the appropriate fees.

Picture a man who has crawled up a long tunnel, wet and ridged, to lie panting just outside its mouth in utter exhaustion. His strength regained, he sees a familiar door and steps within, only to tumble town another slick gullet into the same squeezing, subterranean belly. Loudicrous, indeed. For the businessman, this dark scenario is almost pornography.

I figure if they release Universe of Starcraft (or whatever they end up calling it) in 2009, that will give them enough time to maybe peddle another WoW expansion, or at least let people bounce between fantasy and scifi worlds as they alternatively release expansions for a Warcraft MMO and a Starcraft MMO.

I'm not going to believe in a Starcraft 2 until it hits the stores in my area.

WoW is just TOO much of a cash cow. If anything, it'll be World of Starcraft before we see a WC3 rendition of SC. Much to my dismay.

I think it all comes down to this: whether or not the people at Bliz still have souls. SC2 is obviously what the consumers want, but most of us would buy a SC MMO the second it came out.

Ow...I don't like the setting really...I wish they'd make another RTS Warcraft instead.

I'd play SC2 anyway but meh.

Umm...

Warcraft 3, for those that beat it all the way through, had another possible race...

Did Blizzard say it was just a joke?

EDIT: Not all the way through. Just beat the last mission of RoC on Hard.

To be honest, Starcraft doesn't NEED another race. Let's face it, the Xel-Naga are NOT going to be a playable race. If anything, they're just going to do the puppet-master-pulling-the-strings bit, like they probably did with that ghost guy who ended up bailing on everyone he ever worked for in the game.

The zerg/protoss hybrids... I just can't see being it's own race. The few found in the bonus mission were merely experiments, not nearly enough to make a whole new race out of, although perhaps making them special elite units of the Zerg if they can assimilate all the protoss they probably captured on Aiur, but not as a seperate race.

Even if it's true it will probably not be the same. I mean it will be 3D which means the interface will be different, there will be terrain which we must pan around and over half of the development efforts will have to go into models and animations.

...

Have you ever even played a 3D RTS? Or are you just making stuff up so you can knock a game that hasn't even been announced yet?

Vonriel

There shouldn't be enough Xel'Naga left in the universe to make a race out of, anyway. Each unit would have to cost 10 supplies, and would have to be able to take out entire swarms of zealots at once.

You do make a good case about the hybrids, though. But, I believe Duran also mentions that he's making the same experiments on countless other moons, doesn' the? Wouldn't that suggest that there could be enough to form the basics of an entire race of beings? Just a thought.

Count me out of this "most of us" group. I'm one of the few, the proud, the gamers who are #$@&! sick of MMOs of any kind.

I agree. Y arent there any MMORTSes, or MMOFPS?! Besides, about the 3-D thing, the camera doesnt have to rotate. There arent very many truly 2-D games out there anyways, besides a few,

But if the game Blizzard is announcing 2morrow ISNT a starcraft game, the nation of South Korea will declare war on Blizzared Entertainment (mispelled for trademark purposes).

Starcraft wouldn't make sense as an MMO anyway, same as Warhammer 40K. Simply because the troops are organized into armies. You know how hard it is to do freelance adventures without pissing off high command?

Yea. I thought so.

lumberofdabeast

There was an MMOFPS once, but no one played it, and it is now dead. PlanetSide, or something like that.

And as for an MMORTS... No. Just... No. No internet connection would be able to handle that volume of activity.

unless they kept it to a minimum, like in Savage. But the problem with Savage is that the commander really doesn't have an awful lot of power.
