Welcome to The Sticks Awards - The Best of The Hundred!

The Sticks Awards are given to the best strips of all times, chosen by the polls here in the Playground.

Previously, the voting format was like this: for each 10 comics, chronologically chosen, OotS fans selected one to qualify to the Best of the Hundred poll. Then they elected, with another poll featuring the winners, the best for that hundred comics.

After that poll, the board imposed a 5-option limit on the polls created for the threads. So we had to stick with this bizarre format of two simultaneous 5-option polls, with open voting to take double-voters away. We even had to do a runoff for the #161-170 batch, because there was a triple tie on that, and the Best of the Hundred poll could not have more than 10 options because of this limit.

But after that, the format changed again, and now we have only one poll with 5 options. After all the hundred strips were voted ("the regular season"), then we'll have 4 polls with 5 of the winners ("the playoffs"), which will yield 4 big winners for the last poll of that hundred ("the finals").

For this poll only, though, I'll set up one poll with the first 5 most voted strips from the previous polls, then another with the other 5 and then a little one with the two winners.

So, here they are! The 10 finalists for this Hundred!

THAT IS SO 102.

Definitely one of, if not the, funniest line(s) in the strip to date.

I gotta vote for the Monty Python strip, though 102 is definitely a close 2nd.

Well, #102 is my least favourite -- the only strip to get 1/10 in the ratings I've been doing -- so I'll hold off my vote for a while and vote for whichever looks like it has the best chance of overtaking it.

Oof! Tough choice, but 149 gets it... with 136 and 111 following closely.

That said, I think I like all of these five better than the next five. Though 169 is still better...

I don't see any link to the second poll, where is it?

So, I'm a little confused - do we vote in each poll as there's going to be a follow on poll or not?

I don't think it's possible to emphasize strongly enough the magnitude of the crime against humanity that you have committed by NOT having strip 197 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0197.html) in this poll. You make baby Jesus cry.

Here, I'll quote myself:

Bolding mine. That means, no more simultaneous polls. From #210 on, there will always be just one poll with 5 strips.

Read the first post for more details.

So, I'm a little confused - do we vote in each poll as there's going to be a follow on poll or not?

Yes. You guys are now free to vote in every poll. This one will yield the best of these five, then we'll have another that will produce the best of the other five, and then a big final with the two winners. It's like one big poll divided in three parts.

Sorry Finwe. It's the rules. I can't do anything, the people have voted for #200 on that batch.

You mean there's FIVE Monty Python references. The whole thing is a reference to the cheese shop sketch. There is a brief drift into the Spam sketch, as you've noted. The dead parrot references the Dead Parrot sketch. The cat is another reference to the cheese shop, where the owner also has a cat, and confuses it with something the customer asks (I can't remember what). Some people have also aspeculated that the cat refers to the Confuse-a-Cat sketch, but I don't buy that. The snake is a reference to something else, but I'm drawing a blank on that one right now.

#136, because it quotes Monty Python. #149 is a close second.

The dead parrot
Not dead, just resting.

I voted for #123, my second favorite strip. The expression on Roy's face is simply priceless.

I think the snake was meant to be a python. :smalltongue:

So that was a bit of a meta joke there...

Chesire Cat/Cheese, I think.

Go 149!

Close call between 136 and 102, but I gotta cast my vote for 102.
