What would you say is the best familiar a Shadowcaster can get with this?

Last time I built one, I went with a lantern archon. Because, you know, irony and all.

The best shadow familiars for a shadowcaster line up pretty closely with the best non-shadow familiars for a non-shadowcaster. You're still primarily looking for utility and useful special abilities. Getting the Dark template on top of everything else is just gravy.
