★ Minecraft

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks while running from skeletons. Or something like that. The game involves players creating and destroying various types of blocks in a three dimensional environment. The player takes an avatar that can destroy or create blocks, forming fantastic structures, creations and artwork across the various multiplayer servers in multiple game modes.

The server uses a whitelist to allow only certain individuals entry. To add yourself, or any questions, ask Saposhiente (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=49194).

★ Terraria

Terraria is a game about placing blocks while running from skeletons, but in 2D! Well, okay. There's more of a focus on exploration, finding rare weapons and materials, and battling increasingly powerful foes as you carve out a home or two on the side.

You didn't get Fallout Tactics? I know it's no where near as good as the other two, but there was that lovely bundle with all three...

There was a bundle, true, but I just didn't get into Tactics enough to want to play the whole thing. I'm positive that it would just sit unused in my library forever. Fallout 1 & 2 is really what I'm interested in playing, and for $2.50 apiece I won't complain about the cost.

...didn't I made announcement in PitP group with whole pack free giveaway? :smallconfused:

I've so infrequently been logging into Steam lately that I probably didn't see it.

Beats me. It was in old OPs so I left that alone, perhaps artefact from times when this was all-gaming thread? :smallconfused:

Why are there two lists of "Older Steam threads" in the OP, btw?

Because the list from old threads was mess of ugly links, so I tried to re-write it with titles and all. I also intended to replace links with threading, but then we migrated to new forum so I decided to put it on hold to see if old threading would still work. Then I think I just never got around to finishing polishing the list, sick and all :smallfrown:

Playing Space Empires 4. Not a bad game despite showing a bit of its age. Works alright for casual gamers like myself that don't see a lot of time to dink around on the computer for fun, though if I forget what I was doing... XD I love how the AI will shot me and then ask if I want a trade treaty. It's like I'm dealing with Klingons.

With how many Minecraft rip-offs are popping up on Steam's front page (at least for me, that might because I own both Terraria and Starbound.) I'm wouldn't be surprised if we had a Minecraft server at some point.

I think ripoffs is a bit mean, at least for those two. Stuff like cubeworld or whatever maybe, but Terraria at least is more focused on fighting bosses than exploring stuff. Speaking of Terraria it has a big update coming out that looks kind of cool, I haven't played in like a few years, but I might start again with this.

1.3 comes out in 2 days (the 30th).

Hopefully the new difficulty mode does something (they've said it's supposed to have revamped AI), otherwise the new content (and this is going to be a big patch) won't hold people over long since vets know all the the little tricks to speed things up.

I didn't get very many games this sale. Here's my list:

Purchased through Steam directly:
Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Wings! Remastered Edition
Cinemaware Anthology: 1986-1991 (for the original Wings!)

Bought as a gift through Steam directly, but refunded when they didn't want it:
Legend of Korra

Bought from BundleStars for a Steam key:
Middle Earth: The Shadow of Mordor bundle (base + GotY upgrade)

^Pretty much. Terraria is a solid game, and I'm really excited to see what's in 1.3. Haven't gotten too deep into Starbound yet, but so far it's slower pace than Terraria, but it shows promise (it's still in Early Access.)

I went without internet for a few days, so I caught up on a couple games.

As much time as I waited to buy and play it, I am not liking Shovel Knight. It's WAY too hard, and not like, "I'm a casual scum it's too hard" hard. Like, "position this enemy in the perfect spot to knock you off ledges and die, and repeat everywhere" hard, and just overall made way too difficult. The boss's patterns are random, which makes them just as hard, and I spent a lot time just losing gold by dying over and over. There was a boos randomly roaming the map, and I HAD to get by it to get where I needed to go, and I kept dying. The one stage that has the screen blacking out is about the dumbest thing any game designer can do. Especially when it starts happening DURING THE BOSS FIGHT. the secrets aren't; they're all very clearly marked. And they're also mostly pointless as it is, outside of a little bit of gold. I got an armor upgrade that finally let me not get knocked back, but it makes you slide really badly when you turn, which is bad considering the knight's movements are already a little off. I don't see myself finishing it.

Stuntmania Reloaded is a game that looks incredibly unfinished, but has a very interesting concept. A platformer, where you drive around collecting things. The vehicle bonuses, like super jump and nitro, provide for some fun time, but sadly, it means nothing. the tricks you can do don't mean a thing, and aren't even scored (that I've seen). The cars don't seem to have different stats, and if they do, there is no indication of it. Again, the collectibles don't mean anything, except for the coins you need to unlock everything. And of course, many glitches, like a ton. Also, you lose all the powerups each time you reload the stage. The game is very forgiving, but some of the required jumps are insanely hard, and don't help by the fact the game isn't smooth. Going up a ramp, you'll hit invisible bumps that kill your jumps. It's fun for a gaffe, but it needs to be fixed and finished.

Oh, look: Valve remembered that giving TF2 an update every once in a while might bring in some revenue. (http://www.teamfortress.com/gunmettle/) Y'know, besides their cut from like 80% of PC games being sold on a digital distribution platform.

Wait. What's this (http://www.teamfortress.com/gunmettle/faq/)?

Q: I run DirectX 8 and I tried to buy a pass. The game said something about it being incompatible?
A: The majority of the update works just fine for DirectX 8. Contracts, drops, coins and maps—they all work! Unfortunately, the uniquely decorated weapons do not. When you are playing with DirectX 8, you will only see the basic, undecorated weapons. This is true both of your own and others' weapons. To gain access to unique weapon decorations, run Team Fortress with DirectX 9. Players running DirectX 8 should remove mat_dxlevel from their config files and add -dxlevel 95 to their launch options.
...There are people still using computers that are limited to DX8? And those are connected to the Internet?

I can see myself switching to DX8 with this next update. The skins look gaudy enough to be from Borderlands instead of TF2, and I already have enough issues with visual clutter that this is probably going to make it worse.

If somebody is seriously still trying to use a graphics card that only supports DX8 (given that DX9 came out in 2002!) then I'd be amazed if they can even get TF2 to run.

TF2 has been horribly optimized since release though, I was barely able to get a consistent 15 frames on my laptop made in 2011, and I had on an FPS config to remove almost all textures and make it look like minecraft.

I really would've thought the community would love hat-ized weapons.
Is it just a vocal minority, or am I missing something?

Actually the horrible optimisation began around 2010, IIRC. My laptop went from being able to play TF2 at 30-40 FPS to a bare 10-20 FPS three years down the road. Them visual clutter adds up to a huge chunk.

Ugly, don't fit the art style, visual clutter makes it more difficult to immediately recognize which weapon is being used. And there are plenty of people who don't like hats either, many people I know run a config that simply removes hats from the game. I used to run it myself and only stopped because the config would frequently make the pyro's head show up as invisible altogether. I believe that this group's a vocal minority though.

Any idea why so many people are complaining about the new weapon skins?

I saw two main reasons: because it's CS:GO ripoff (that admittedly doesn't include all the fun stuff CS operations get) and because it cheapens their pixel-waving cred with Australium guns. Since it's unusual strange guns that are new top dog.

don't fit the art style

That complaint is kind of funny seeing two collections had literally stole textures from oldest map files, and one is camo pattern we already had in game on numerous hats :smalltongue:

visual clutter makes it more difficult to immediately recognize which weapon is being used

Uh, aren't they limited to stock weapons? :smallconfused:

When I see unusual looking gun, assumption 'it's just stock' is generally valid 99% of time...

There are plenty of textures that are okay on maps and not at all on guns. And I believe I mentioned there's a vocal minority who don't necessarily like the hats either.

There's already an orange skin that makes the stock rocket launcher look very similar to the rocket jumper at a glance and color is often the first way I'm able to distinguish a stock minigun from an unlock. I don't think skins are entirely bad but Valve's going to need to be significantly more careful about TF2 skins than they have with CSGO.

Why? I liked or was neutral to most of what I saw, even lilies/frog sniper rifle (no one even notices until it's pointed out to them) was fine. Finally I can have gun match my cosmetic collection in colour.

And I was just pointing out lack of sense in calling what was in game from literally pre-release beta 'wrong art' for TF2...

And I believe I mentioned there's a vocal minority who don't necessarily like the hats either.
If they are the confo guys, they are never happy about anything. For no reason I was able to spot, at that.

Uh, I saw that argument before and it still doesn't make sense to me. You have black gun with striped orange accents:

https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/8/88/Backpack_Rocket_Jumper.png?t=20120601131806

VS solid orange with some beige accents:

http://steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/economy/image/fWFc82js0fmoRAP-qOIPu5THSWqfSmTELLqcUywGkijVjZULUrsm1j-9xgEMaQkUTxr2vTx8mMnvA-aHAfQ_ktk664MazTN-lw5pINynPzRsdxDOALVQX_0_5jf_BCY-5NNsQ9m05bIILliw89ypdOV9ctlSHpPYCKWDZgz_7EM5iakIKc fcpH6-2XnuM2YIXkW-8z4CnrCC6edqhHFWHSYyu1IHsA/360fx360f

If anything, it's closer to the Original in colour, not Jumper, and to me both are very distinct...

Then, there is no reason at all to treat RJ Soldier differently than RL one. There so little scenarios where it would make big difference and you shouldn't drop your guard (in case it was just texture glitch, or hell, any case anyway) even if enemy is seemingly harmless.

Gaelbert
2015-07-03, 03:21 PM
Obviously when you put the two pictures next to each other you'll be able to tell the difference. But in a game situation, where you're tracking multiple enemies and projectiles moving across your screen, the soldier is at midrange, and you're making snap decisions, it's going to make it much harder to instantly read and prioritize targets. Orange historically has been a "safe" color in TF2 and I'm betting there'll be a few times when I see a flash of orange, assume I don't need to immediately worry about it, then have it come back to bite me.

I have no idea who or what "confo" is. I'm just talking about my friends and the folks I play with. Perhaps we're not a representative sample but I'd say a solid third of us use configs to remove hats, and those who don't aren't necessarily happy about the hats either.

So since fallout 3 is an old game and doesn't have a thread around anymore, i figure this would be the place to ask about it. does anybody have any experiance with lightly modding fallout 3? i'd like to put in This Mod (http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/13116/?) to let me repair some difficult-to-aquire power armor that doesn't have any repair data normally, and i was hoping someone could walk me through the stepds i need to do it. i have the file, and i have the fallout 3 files opened, but i'm just not sure where to put it, and i think i need annother mod of some kind called the GECK or something? IDK.

I would recommend the Nexus Mod Manager, its more universal cousin that also manages mods for any other game on the network (such as Skyrim) and is seeing more active development. There's a link to download the NMM at the top of every page on the Nexus. Note that you'll probably have to either move your Steam folder out of Program Files, run the program as an administrator, or enable write permission on the steamapps folder in order for those programs to do anything to help you (do not disable UAC entirely, that would be bad).

Anyway, that mod looks like it's probably just a .esp file. For that, you don't need to download the GECK unless you want to toy around with changing the file yourself. If you don't feel like using NMM to manage your mods, just plop that sucker in your fallout3/Data folder, then on the game's launcher select "Data Files" and click the empty check box next to the file's name.

I've been getting massive spikes when playing TF2 (but not any other games) for the past couple of weeks, and it's really killing my fun, especially since half-second pauses when I'm trying to complete contract objectives is driving me out of my mind. Validating files a couple of times didn't make any difference, so I tried reinstalling TF2 entirely and turning my graphics settings down, and now my game looks like this:

Any idea what I can do about this?

ehh, think i'll just stick to vanilla i guess, i can always use console commands to spawn in fresh t-51b armor to replace the stuff i have when it get's too badly damaged. would be nice if i could just open the code for the game and change a few numbers around like what i did to fix the whole crashing thing, but meh. thanks anyway!

Ah, Terraria!
My experience with Terraria may mirror others.
I remember playing 1.0somenumber, killing skeletor and wondering "was this it?" It was still great value even then, I just wanted more. Some dlc, or maybe even a sequel. I was very surprised to hear that a free massive update, 1.1, was less than a month away. I thought, great I'll play more then.
Then I completely forgot about Terraria.

When 1.2 was announced I realized I forgot about 1.1, so I picked it up and had a blast going to hell and fighting the hard core bosses. But this time I didn't want more or different Terraria, I wanted a break.

So I never got around to 1.2.

I tried expert mode and was honestly disappointed. It's kind of easy, first five bosses all fell in minute tops, but then again, my character has a lot of hard mode gear and I didn't try any of expert mode bosses yet. Mm, time to hunt myself a kitten sword :smalltongue:

Well yeah, if you go in with Fishron gear... Try it with a completely fresh character. Or even the martian invasion/pillar/moon lord fights. Those will eat you even with the best gear (mostly because enemies scale with gear so regular bats will hit for 80-100 hp)

Well yeah, if you go in with Fishron gear... Try it with a completely fresh character. For reference (and speaking from experience): Enemy spawn rate, health, damage, and defense is doubled in Expert, and armor blocks 50% more damage per point (cuts both ways!), and your HP regen is halved if you aren't constantly eating fish and Christmas cookies. Your starting copper-tier weapons will do all of 1-5 damage per swing against the now 100-health Zombies and Demon Eyes, so you really need your first shelter built inside of your first 15 minutes of play. And once you work your way up to 200 HP and 10 armor, after being forced to spend a third of every day/night cycle cowering in fear and/or underground?

Surprise! The Eye of Cthulu now has Spazmatism's lightning-fast multi-charge attack, and will spam it constantly once you bring it below 1/3 HP.

Beat the Eye? Well congratulations, you now have ... well, not much, maybe an extra point of damage on your sword/bow/yoyo. You still need to fight the Brain or the Eater for the items to actually craft that Crimtane/Demonite into a pick and armor, remember? On the bright side, you don't need to beat the Brain/Eater to get your samples/scales -- you only need to beat part of them, since each Brain Creeper and Eater's Head drops a share of the full loot.

The downside? Surprise! The Eater of Worlds now has the Hardmode Corruptor's Vile Spit attack -- again, with double damage, so that's a 130-damage ping. Does that sound like too quick a death? You're in luck -- the Brain won't one-shot you ... or at least, not before he's picked you apart with six different debuffs, double-speed minions, and a wall of illusions.

Let's assume you actually manage to get enough supplies to craft a Demonite or Crimtane pick (or spend the hours it can take to fish up a Reaver Shark with only basic gear and bait), and take it to the Underworld so you can skip straight to Molten gear. Heck, let's be generous and assume you don't get your Hellstone mines prematurely flooded with lava -- Lava slimes generate a few tiles' worth of lava when killed in Expert, incidentally -- and also manage to get yourself up to 400 HP. You ought to be ready for Queen Bee or Skeletron by now, surely?

Well, not if you can't handle them having double move and attack speed on top of their health, damage, and armor buffs.

What's that you say? You actually managed to do all that? Not much left in pre-Hardmode save the Wall of Flesh, then. Better build that thousand-tile-long bridge through the Underworld to fight it on. Heck, make it two. It won't save you.

The Expert Wall of Flesh can outrun the Hermes Boots' dash. :smalleek:

Wouldn't old short sword/square hole trick work on zombies? :smallconfused:

And why you wouldn't spent most of the time underground seeing you need gold/silver ore real bad? Maybe make base there too?

As for crimtane/corruption/molten, how about skipping all of these in favour of meteorite and its free laser? Or at least use it as intermediate step?

As for making lava walkway, can't you just use Lava Waders? These can be obtained without fighting anything and make mining both meteorite and lava trivial, so...

Then there is risk free fishing, that allows you to skip so many equipment steps it isn't even funny.

The problem is in expert WoF gets faster the less health he has, to the point that if you get caught on anything, you're dead. He will outrun you with spectre boots. I guess you could use minecart tracks now if you had a massive amount of iron.

Then there is risk free fishing, that allows you to skip so many equipment steps it isn't even funny.- It's still using Hardmode gear to judge the difficulty of pre-Hardmode bosses. The melee (Helmet) versions of Adamantite, Titanium, and Hallowed armor block twice as much damage as the best pre-Hardmode armor, and Excalibur does twice as much damage to bosses (after reduction) as the best pre-Hardmode melee weapons.

- The shortsword-through-a-hole-in-the-wall trick is much less effective on Expert, mostly because of how long (relatively) it takes to kill zombies with the lower half of the pre-Hardmode weapons (and the higher half doesn't have shortswords). You're looking at 20-50 swings per zombie, and the only things they drop are coins, Shackles, and the occasional Zombie Arm. Not worth it.

- Two words: Cave Bats (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GoddamnedBats). Surface mining and exploring the upper sections of caves that open to the surface is much safer, at least until you need to move onward from Gold/Platinum-tier.

- Meteorite only helps so much; the Space Gun and Meteorite Armor are nice on Normal servers as a newbie's first mage-type loadout, but due to the increased defenses of Expert enemies the Space Gun's damage is often pushed down into the single digits. This makes it much less effective than, say, a Hellstone-tier bow & arrows. Meteorite additionally does not have a pickaxe, so mining it doesn't help shortcut your way to Hellstone (or a Reaver Shark) in order to push over that hump to Cobalt/Palladium and the other Hardmode ores.

- Lava Waders do make mining Hellstone trivial (given that you have a strong enough pick), but to make them you first need obsidian and two items that require chest-hunting -- one of which is rare enough that they may not even spawn on any given world -- and to have already found the Tinker, which requires properly defeating a Goblin Invasion. If you meant the Lava Charm component of the Waders, though, then that's quite a bit more reasonable.

- Yes, fishing in an Ocean for a Reaver Shark in order to skip the lower picks is (relatively) risk-free, but you potentially need to fish for an hour (real time) and use dozens of bait items in the process. Well, that or import some high-tier fishing equipment and Master Bait, but if you're going that route you may as well skip straight to importing Hardmode gear anyways.

Out of curiosity, I tried on freshly generated small expert world and beat WoF without much if any preparation (just made two holes in towers) in 1/3 of hell (my current position is where it died):

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/693902535308169805/B0A56D9FAC41E82DCA8F754B7EDB14EDF2A4352E/

But yeah, I can see how it could be really difficult fight without being able to run on lava or extensive preparation. On a side note, this world also generated smallest dungeon ever (which would be really annoying if I wasn't able to break that wall by now).

- It's still using Hardmode gear to judge the difficulty of pre-Hardmode bosses. Well, yes, but all that does is cutting fight time by half. I ended fight with 60% of HP left without using any healing, so with a few bottles it would be absolutely doable even doing half damage and having half armour.

Speaking of surface mining, two expert worlds I made so far had deserts with pits full of fossil blocks. Apparently you can make these into new nice pre hard mode armour with Extractinator so that's another way to get good gear without fighting now, though I am not sure how common fossils normally are.

Also, there's a 60-second lockout on healing potions, so you likely don't have time for more than one or two of them before the WoF overtakes you and starts piling on the melee damage.

- It would be, yes ... if the fossils didn't require a demonite-tier pick to mine and/or weren't protected by berserk antlions. As-is, the Fossil Armor is really only worth going for if you specifically want to try a throwing-weapon-based build. (I'm fairly sure that having a desert that opens up into the new antlion hive biome as you describe is a guaranteed feature of new worlds in 1.3, and is always (?) found between your starting point and the Jungle.)

You could set the game to only update when you launch it (under properties), then set your steam into Offline mode before launching to keep it from checking for updates.

In theory, anyway - never tested that personally. It's possible that the game would pre-download the updates and then install them before you run the game even offline, but I find that unlikely.

I can confirm that respawn time increases when you die fighting a boss. I'd wish this wouldn't be so bad in singleplayer, but I can understand the reasoning behind it being present in Multiplayer.

Most bosses just disappear if you die while fighting them in singleplayer anyway, so doesn't seem to make much difference what the spawn timer is.

Trixie
2015-07-28, 06:44 AM
There was no hacking. Amateurs at Valve just forgot to ensure 'reset password' page is protected in any way. Technically, it should ask you to input code sent to your mail, but the function did nothing and you could reset password of any account you knew login to. That last part is important - if no one knows your login, you'd be safe, but streamers and such with known logins all got their passwords vandalised for 'fun'. Note - since reset password page was done so badly, you could reset it right back, but you would still get week trade and community ban to "protect" you as it would count as logging in into new device.

TL/DR - Valve just again updated live system without testing, don't give account details to people, keep your mail doubly safe.

Yep, and while I suppose it's possible SteamOS is too small in users even for Valve to put up, the linux category is broken down into Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS 64 bit, Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit, Linux 64 bit, and Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca 64 bit. The article is rather misleading, though, which is confirmed by actually reading the Steam Hardware survey results (http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey) -- in reality, Windows 10 had double the growth by number of users that Linux did, not that Win10 already has double the number of users that all Linux distributions combined. In fact, as of the time the survey was published, Win10 users accounted for one-tenth of one percent of all users. The two top-ranked Linux distributions (last year's Ubuntu Long-Term Service release and April's Ubuntu 15.04 update) had 2.7 and 1.7 times as many users, respectively, as Windows 10. Moreover, SteamOS is still clearly marked on the Steam website (http://store.steampowered.com/steamos) as being a early beta release at this time, for "highly technical" users only. The wider "official" release has not happened yet, and likely will not until November 10 when Steam Hardware and Steam Machine preorders start shipping. It is entirely too early to declare SteamOS "dead on arrival."

I'm also not sure about the logic that Windows Steam users had to pay for it. I'm sure Valve paid for SteamOS development out of Steam profits, but that doesn't mean they were actually charging *more* in order to pay for it.

The humble bundle store has a bunch of the Ys games on sale, so I went ahead and picked up Ys 1-3 for 10 bucks.

Been meaning to actually play this series more in depth than for more than just a few minutes when I still had my PSP. Fully prepared (and kinda hoping) to die a lot.

I found 1 to be terrible. The combat system was the dumbest thing I've played. I think they stray away from that when you get into 4 and Origins, but I haven't played them yet.

1&2 have the crappy bump mechanic. 3 has the press button to attack model. Also discovered normal mode on 3 is hard as ****. Started it in Nightmare difficulty, couldn't get past the first miniboss. Switched to normal, got passed him first try (since I already knew his patterns), first real boss took around 30 tries. Looked it up, 3 is the hardest game in the series as far as overall difficulty of fights goes.

Possibly odd question...
Does anyone know if there's a way to censor what an account views as well as remove the update/sale ads?
I'm trying to help my younger sister get into gaming, but I'd like it if I didn't have to worry about her seeing inappropriate things.

If you make a personal account for her and set her age, she shouldn't be barred from a lot of inappropriate things, and it may be possible to prevent changing the age settings (I'm not even sure if you can do it at all, and it's a matter of question whether she would or knows how to, of course).

Removing the update/sale ads is, I think, only possible with apps or extensions--at least for browsing the Steam store in an internet browser rather than the client itself, but there are some things that work with the client itself, so you could search for something that helps you block those particular things.

If she is much younger than 12/13 though (to the point that mostly just the Humongous Entertainment games would be appropriate material), it may be better to start her off someplace other than Steam and introduce her to Steam later on.

There are maybe a hundred or so decent games on the workshop for it, so if you have a decent group of people it's great fun. I haven't put that much time into it, 150 hours or so, but it's been a really good way to play games online with friends. I even use it for running a D&D campaign at the moment, though it is not perfectly suited for that.

To be fair, it was arguably already P2W when Sniper Rifles (which made the Shield special unit a laughable threat rather than something that required coordination to defeat easily) and Explosive ammo (which made Shields AND Bulldozers laughable threats) were only available in DLC, and not part of the vanilla game.

A lot of the hate comes from the fact that according to the FAQ from the Pre-celebration event to unlock this 'feature':

FREE?
Every feature that is unlocked during Crimefest is released for free for the entire community of PAYDAY 2 (http://www.overkillsoftware.com/games/roadtocrimefest/)

Then there are the minor details that pile on top of that: The aforementioned Skins can give you stat bonuses (minor ones, to be fair, but it's still outright better than not using it, and it sets a precedent,) The Safe Loot Card is in the SAME item drop system (rather than a separate drop like say, TF2 or CS:GO does, ironically enough), the producer having previously stated that it would not have mircotransactions (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3127521) and well...

Let me quote the Elephant character from Payday 2: "Reddit lit up like a christmas tree."

After preordering the game and playing the first episode when it released last November, I finally have the final chapter of Tales from the Borderlands.

Like every other time I've waited for the next episode, my save file malfunctioned, but this time I'd had the sense to make backup copies, which are still on my drive and working fine. However, the game says that all of its save slots are empty.

Since TFTB has had problems like this for a lot of players, I've decided to stop preordering TellTale games. From now on, I'll wait at least a couple of episodes and find out if there are any game-ruining issues like in TFTB.

Something has gone horribly wrong over at Valve today. Reports all over the place of people logging in to their Steam accounts and being presented with someone else's profile. The rumor mill (No official word as of yet) has it that this is some kind of page cache mistake gone horrifically wrong. As far as I can tell, you can't actually do anything with other peoples accounts (I tried harmless stuff like deleting items from shopping carts or wishlists to see the extent of the damage, just got error messages) but you can see the last four digits of their phone number, the email address of some accounts (Hope you like getting signed up for a billion junk mail websites by a billion trolls :smallsigh: ), and I've heard you can see the last four digits of their credit card, but I obviously didn't look that far. Some group claimed they were gong to DDoS the site for Christmas, and while the whole place shut down early in the morning a DDoS obviously can't cause accounts to swap around.

reading through on a thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/3y7le9/im_logged_in_as_someone_random_on_steam/?limit=500) on reddit, it seems like a bunch of people were getting the same accounts displayed. So it's possible that the leak was only for a relatively small number of people. Still...it's the not knowing that's making me a little bit anxious.

Plus the fact that they can see peoples' billing addresses, e-mails, phone numbers, and credit information. Even if they can't go in and buy stuff, or see the full numbers for the phone and credit info. It's still a pretty big issue.

Also paypal mails, session numbers, and, if you were a big seller and had to send Valve your tax info, potentially much more scary stuff. Add to the whole mess the Valve's badly thought out new strong-arm tactic forcing pretty much every user of steam game with inventory to attach phone number to account in they want to be locked out by escrow and you have mess of apocalyptic proportions.

By the way, look at the number of posts here regarding winter sale. Telling, isn't it? It's terrible, no dailies, no flash sales, no good discounts (if you look at isthereanydeal virtually everything but new games was on bigger sales before), outright price cheating (http://siliconangle.com/blog/2015/11/27/steam-spy-calls-out-devs-for-raising-game-prices-before-the-steam-sale/), no ARGs, achievement hunts, crafting anything (how hard it would be for Valve to make a handful of cosmetics for their games...?), and you get picture of big, fat, apathetic monopolist that is only interesting in how much they can price gouge and squeeze every last cent out of their sla... Um, I mean 'dear customers'. GOG by now is better in pretty much every way, if they will make Galaxy a bit better there will be no reason to give Valve one broken cent more.

I don't think the tax information is something that can be visible anywhere on your account, because that would be a huge security risk. Even if this specific problem didn't happen. That goes straight to Valve.

Also it seems like the information shown was only of a relatively small number of Steam Users. so calling it a "Mess of apocalyptic proportions" is blowing the issue out of the water just as much as people yesterday freaking out on reddit and other outlets about the possibility of people getting into their accounts and taking their wallet money and draining their bank accounts. Despite being told several times that it's a caching issue and nothing could be changed.

At the end of the day, while the people affected definitely might take issue with it and there will likely be lawsuits in the background. The average steam user won't be affected. That's hardly "Apocalyptic"

outright price cheating (http://siliconangle.com/blog/2015/11/27/steam-spy-calls-out-devs-for-raising-game-prices-before-the-steam-sale/)

While i agree that the sale is pretty lackluster, i don't know if it's entirely fair to put the price cheating on Valve. That's definitely something that points towards the greed of the devs involved than Steam itself.

So far this month only one game on my list saw a significant sale. I didn't buy it as it was low on my priority list for now, but I have noticed that Steam sales seem not be occurring for the games I want (mostly 4x and simulation stuff. Some older games in the back).

I read on Game Informer that phone numbers and credit cards are partially censored, so in theory others would only see your last four digits if your account got affected. That sounds about right from my last experience buying stuff from Steam.

Honestly, with way more games in my library already, I'm not too worried about buying more. I spent all year just playing Skyrim and a handful of other games.

And it's generally thought that the new refund system, turning every game into a free 2 hour demo, was the reason for less exciting sales. And I'll take the best refund system on the market over saving a few dollars on games any day of the week.

Or it could be that Steam is no longer the only place to buy Steam games. There are big sales all over the internet. So Steam can't force cheaper prices anymore.

There is an ARG for the sale. There is a big whodonit mystery to solve, if you want some excitement.

I'd hazard that between that and the (likely) reduced sales figures from this sale, flash sales will be making their return by this summer.

During Steam Summer Sales (I think), I refunded a bunch of games, and eventually they stopped letting me refund things. My abundant refunding was due to me buying a whole bunch of $1 or less games that didn't turn out that good. So refunds do not allow you to have a bunch of demos. They probably max out around 3-ish a week or some such.

Tell you one thing: for all its faults, you only realise how good Steam is when you have to use a competing product. I got the Witcher 3 on DVD at Christmas, and installed GOG Galaxy to keep it up to date. It then proceeded to download a 17Gb update--I mean, the entire ruddy game is only 27Gb installed, how can an update be that large? Because of my slow Internet connection this took 17 hours to download, and there's no way to throttle the download speed in Galaxy, so this pretty much rendered my Internet unusable from 9pm on Sunday to after noon on Monday.

It is possible to play a game more than 2 hours and still get a refund on it. It's less likely, true, but it happens, as I have done it. It may very well depend on the reason. If a game was played 3-4 hours and someone then decides they don't like it, they may not get a refund since they could have decided that hours ago. If someone plays a game 3-4 hours and it gets an update that makes it not work on their system for whatever reason, they may be able to get a refund because the game doesn't work at all and they have no control over it.

GOG by now is better in pretty much every way, if they will make Galaxy a bit better there will be no reason to give Valve one broken cent more.

I'll wait to pass judgement on that until GOG price-matches their games in RUR to Steam's offers. I had plenty of hilarious occasions where GOG had wonderful "sales" on their games that, even at 60% off, still cost more than the same games on Steam without discounts. :P

It does seem like they are starting to even out, at least, though it's as much prices lowering on GOG as them rising on Steam. For instance, Chaos Reborn is half off from both distributors, and only slightly more expensive at GOG. (218 RUR to Steam's 208)

So I'm going to wait and see where this goes. :)

Main difficulty I've had with this Steam sale is readability. The old Flash sales and dailies, you logged in every so often and checked, saw if there was something interesting, and got out.

Now though, they just kinda threw it all up there at once, but with huge picture windows that only let you look at a few at a time. And if they just put them all up once, that might not be so bad...but scrolling down, I see the same games repeating over and over. Often, one page will have a small window with a game, immediately followed with a giant window featuring the same game.

Just give me a damn shorthand list, Steam. I'm far more likely to find a game I want if they're all compressed onto a list that I can quickly peruse it.

Heck, a game that was actually ON my wishlist was on sale, and they didn't put it on my recommended games list anywhere! They included games from genres I have literally never played on Steam, and yet failed to put a game that is both in a genre that I primarily play (Turn-based strategy RPG) and that I had specifically followed.

This remains my biggest issue with marketing in general - I don't really care about how they market stuff, as long as they don't shove in my face too obnoxiously. But if they're going to do so, I wish they would at least do so competently.

I still get ads for games I already own. Like, if I've got 200 hours in a game, I don't think I want to buy it again on sale.

... Then again, it might be for those that are actually nice to others and buy games as gifts, but come on, who's really that generous? Everyone but me? Oh well. I actually got an e-mail this sale for the games on my wishlist.

I ended up buying a good number. Darkest Dungeon, Banished, Civ 5, Kingdom, Half-Life, and One Finger Death Punch.

Kingdom is a neat little game. A sidescroller with only three buttons: left, right, and down (the "interact" button). You have to run around as the king or queen and order everything to get done, and you also have to spend gold to do so, so it's got both time and resource management, but it's not very difficult at either. There's only one resource (gold), and while it has elements of RTS, it's hardly a true RTS action-wise. Once you figure out a build order after a couple failed attempts, executing it requires you to pay attention but doesn't require any real skill beyond that. Basically, you have to build stuff and equip archers I almost beat it! I ended up getting too close to a battle and lost the crown! If I want to actually beat it, I'll have to retread the exact same steps up to that point. And that takes hours.

While it's not really more than a flash game mechanically, the pixel art is beautiful (ignore the black bars, that's just my monitor).

I've never had a problem with that, because you can just go to your wishlist and see things there. Valve should put more effort into optimizing their recommendations system though. Luckily, it's no longer an issue for me.

There are quite a few places on the internet where people gift each other games, especially around Christmastime. GOG's community is especially crazy about it, though they will of course gift games more often from GOG itself (or Steam games from bundles).

If a game on your wishlist is on sale, you should be getting an email. As in, that's how the system works, so there might be something wrong here that you might want to contact Steam's support for.

There's http://www.steamgifts.com/ , too.

In non-sale Steam news, because the sale on it ended already - Total Annihilation, the best RTS since 1997, is now available on Steam courtesy of Wargaming.net. I'm told it's essentially the same as the GOG.com release, but I haven't tried that, so I wouldn't know. What I do know is that it works flawlessly on my Windows 8 tablet, everything from 1920x1080 resolution to the music track selector that could only be improved by having fade-in instead of sharp cuts. I've played Supreme Commander, I've played various versions based on the Spring engine, and good old TA somehow still delivers the most fun out of all of them.

I got a few (3) games off of Steam sales. One was Aperture Tag. It didn't work. This is the second game I've got recently that begins to launch then crashes. I refunded the game successfully, but does anyone know why games that should be working aren't?

Who says they should work? Steam doesn't require a product to work before selling it.

Although in this case, you didn't buy a game, but a mod to a game. So there is a thousand and one reasons why it doesn't work.

Steam does, after all, reserve the right to take away any of your games at any time. The mod clearly worked fine for other people judging by good reviews. Also, the same thing happened with magic circle. Same with Cave Story +, which has worked on one out of three computers I have tried it on.

So I know we just kinda rag on Steam now due to how awful it is, but how 'bout them games, huh? I sure do like 'em.

Anyone else playing Armello? I'm really enjoying it and it scratches that "Board-Game-Itch" quite satisfactorily. It has some win condition balance issues though. There's 4 ways to win and one of them is almost impossible (I've only managed to pull it off once in 40+ plus games).

Last Steam game I played for the first time was Trials Fusion, so I guess I can talk about that.

Physics games are hard. But this game is still pretty fun. Some problems I have with it though. No bike upgrades. Everything is aesthetic. And a lot of it requires real money to purchase. Which also means the specific challenges in each stage are meaningless if you don't care about what your bike looks like.

Some stages are impossible to complete without a specific bike. I found one I couldn't do until I switched to the ATV.

If there was more incentive to try, outside of getting enough medals to continue, and a way to customize your bike's stats, it would be so much more fun. I haven't tried any user-created tracks yet, but I imagine that adds a lot more gametime.

Picked up Dying Light from the sale. It makes you work for it in the beginning, but it is amazing. Story is pretty generic, but gameplay is smooth, and lets you do some pretty cool things.

One of my favorites is still chucking a knife at an enemy's head, then while they're staggering, dropkicking them to the ground, pulling the knife out, and finishing them. I don't care how many times I do it, it still feels badass.

I'm already at that point. Survivor level... 16? 17? It's why I'm so thorough. Been interrupted way too many times picking into police vans.

I mean, my customized machete has a >50% chance of decapitating an average biter, but I want to save it for big enemies. Even with all the various skills to extend weapon life, it's easy to burn through one real quick.

Picked up Killing Floor 2 with my Christmas gift card after giving it a whirl during their last free weekend. Having a blast, and so far the pubs aren't too bad--although I do hate it when my team keeps running off to the far end of the map while I'm staring at the pod deciding what to buy.

Good day,

I was hoping I could get some help with a prospective purchase I'm considering. I am interested in the XCOM 2 digital package pre-purchase (http://store.steampowered.com/app/268500/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1), priced $75. I have enough gift cards for GameStop (http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/xcom-2-digital-deluxe-edition/127444) that I will be able to purchase it for about $10. However, I am having trouble pre-paying for it with the many gift cards (the order goes through, but it seems to only include the credit card I would like to use only for the final $10).

So, my question to people more familiar with Steam/Firaxis is: is it likely the digital package will change prices or go away entirely if I wait until release day? Or is it likely to stay around at the same price point? I am not sure if this is a pre-purchase special price, or just an example of this "season pass" concept I've been hearing about.

Alternatively, should I bite the bullet and go to a physical location? (In my current case, that might involve crossing international boundaries, so I'd rather not)

Thank you,

Grey Wolf

It looks like it's just the game + all planned DLC for less than those things sold separately (plus the soundtrack which doesn't seem to be offered otherwise). So if you were planning on getting all the DLC, it's definitely a better way to go than buying a la carte.

I don't think "Digital Deluxe Editions" usually go away after launch. It probably also won't change price. But as I do not have an inside line to the Firaxis marketing department, this is all really just conjecture based on past trends. So I'm probably right, but I make no promises.

The XCOM 2 Digital Deluxe version appears to be a just a collection of a) the base game, b) a season pass like thing (with some rather disappointing looking packs) that they are not calling a season pass (which implies there's likely to be much more DLC not included, maybe a full blown expansion), and c) the soundtrack. The Digital Deluxe version is not likely to go away. What will go away, however, is the pre-order bonus available for the pre-purchase of any edition. It will almost certainly return as a paid option, though.

I don't know where else I could ask this. I already asked the steam support, but so far they're not really helpful, so I'm wondering if you guys have experience about this.

Consider there are three person, Alice, Bob, and Charlie.

Alice live in South East Asia, Bob lives in Europe, Charlie lives in United States.

Alice cannot gift to Bob in Europe because region restriction, this is clear.

Charlie can gift to both Bob and Alice.

My question is, for example if Charlie gift X game to Alice, can Alice gift that specific X game to Bob?

Charlie can gift to both Bob and Alice.

My question is, for example if Charlie gift X game to Alice, can Alice gift that specific X game to Bob?

From experience: Once a game has been bought as an inventory item, that inventory item is locked to the region where it was bought (including no region restrictions, if bought in a region with no restrictions for that particular game). The game can be passed even to someone in a region that cannot activate it (e.g. Germany), as the region restrictions only come into play when they try to activate. It can pass through as many hands as need be, and it keeps the original restrictions (or lack thereof).

However, if activated to your account, you cannot buy a new copy with the original restriction. New gift copies will always be in your region, even if you activated a copy from another region.

So, assuming that nothing has changed and your scenario is correct, Charlie could gift a game to Alice, who doesn't activate it and gives the unactivated gift item to Bob. But, if Alice activates it, she can't buy a new one to give to Bob.

I'm trying to wrangle my Steam Controller, specifically for Dungeon of the Endless, but the problems I'm having are endemic to playing any of my mouse+keyboard games with just the controller (I don't have a mouse handy, just in case you ask). How exactly do I get it so that wonky things like (in DotE's case) left mouse button defaulting to right trigger instead of, oh I don't know, the A button don't happen? Is there a place in the options where I can set up a default config? Any pointers as to what I should do with all the buttons once I'm there?

From that menu you can customize any button on the controller -- including remapping the touchpads and joystick, changing the level of haptic feedback, and enabling the gyroscope.

Choose Browse Configs (X) to check what layouts have already been uploaded to Steam -- the "Gamepad" and "Gamepad with Camera" options in the Templates menu generally mimic the XBox controller's layout. Newer and more popular games generally have a pile of user-made layouts in the Community section as well.

Once you find or tweak a layout to your liking, use Export Config (Y) to save it. Once you've exported a layout, it will appear in the Browse Configs menu under "Your Other Games" when you open Controller Configuration for another game.

And what should one do with all the buttons? Obviously right pad is camera and left pad is movement (unless you want to use the joystick for that purpose), the A button is equivalent to the left click, and the B button is equivalent to "back", but what does one do with the triggers, bumpers, and clickers? Not to mention, of course, buttons X and Y? I'm just looking for a good way to allocate all those resources in ways that work for the grand majority of games (because the default certainly doesn't work).

For games that don't have built-in XBox controller support, you have to consider on a game-by-game basis what buttons you need. For a wholly mouse-driven game like AdVenture Capitalist or Papers, Please, that may mean you only need a touchpad to move the mouse and one button to left-click. On the extreme other end, my XCOM 2 layout (http://imgur.com/DVuI3Pa) uses both touchpads, the joystick, one button for each different key you need to move and select your soldiers, and -- because I ran out of buttons -- holding the left grip pad turns the "mouse" touchpad into a pop-up menu of the hotkeys for psi powers, special attack skills, grenades, and evac. There is no "one best layout" that will work for everything.

game-by-game basis

I was afraid of that. I get your point about things that already have controller support (like, say, Bastion), but I get the feeling that for some games (like Dungeon of the Endless) I'd need to double-bind a few things to make them all work correctly. :smallyuk: I need to write down the major key shortcuts, which reeks of homework.

Valve decided to increase trade holds to 15 days (and this now includes selling and buying items on community market), stopped restoring stolen items, and overall dispensed with the last pretences of caring about customers:

http://store.steampowered.com/news/20631/

I don't know, maybe in USA everyone has smartphone with internet, but in the rest of the world, a lot of people uses windows os/blackberry/firefox os/symbian, for which the steam authenticator app doesn't exists, have very limited (if at all) mobile internet plans, and otherwise have no way of using this at all. Yes, there are workarounds around it (by say scrap.tf team) but they ultimately make your account less, not more, secure. And to think tiny bit of tens of millions Valve burned on useless steam os no one uses* or on hardware that falls short of what competition offers would easily expand customer service to a level where they would be easily able to respond to queries within 3 days. Origin and GOG can do it, why not much larger corporation?

*I had huge schadenfreude moment when I saw that despite all the millions spent advertising linux share of steam users fell yet again (http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey) recently, to just 0.9%...

In other news, saw the HTC Vive ad? It costs 800$ in USA, and for some absurd reason 950 euro in Europe (yes, this includes shipping, but with such sums you'd expect free one). 950 euro equals about 1030$, nice joke there, Valve. To sweeten the deal, steam offers 3 free tech demos. Yes, you heard right, not games, not killer apps, three small mobile grade tech demonstration programs. Wow.

Oh, and you will need PC running at least GeForce GTX 980 minimum to reliably use it, at another 1500+ $. It's such popular card even steam survey places it within rounding error and groups it in 'other' category. Sigh, I had high hopes for relatively accessible 3D revolution but it looks like Valve's attempt will be yet another quickly forgotten, luxury toy no one users or remembers existing :smallfrown:

First, it costs 799 USD + shipping (30 USD) in the US. This amount does not include sales tax (which will be added depending on your state in varying amounts).

It costs 817.27 USD + shipping (110 USD) to have it shipped to Australia (remember, still in US dollars). This amount does not include GST (which will be added at a rate of 10%).

It costs 899.00 EUR + shipping (72.57 EUR) to have it shipped to Poland. This amount includes 23% VAT.

799 USD in EUR based on mid-market rates (you'll never get mid-market rates) is 736.30 EUR. Add 23% VAT and that brings it to 905.65 EUR before shipping. They are selling it for less in Poland than what they are selling it for in the US.

I see absolutely no reason why one should expect free shipping, regardless of the cost of the base item.

Well, they say 95% account use mobile authenticator, so I guess for them it's close enough.

A genuine question:

I don't use mobile authenticator because I often misplace my phone, and just use email authenticator instead. I assume they're authenticating the same thing? Or are they different? The thing sent email to me whenever there's a trade or I use my steam account from a different browser or different computer.

Is this considerably less secure than mobile authenticator? Is this active by default on every account or I just somehow activated it?

They do authenticate the same thing. I am using email authenticator (well, everyone does, seeing Valve took away option to opt-out) and have to confirm trading and selling on the market with email (ironically, I don't need to confirm selling for small sums, so if someone broke into my account and wanted to sell my unusuals and festives (to everyone who doesn't play TF2, they're rare and expensive items) for pennies they can easily do so). So, yeah, you need to both insert phone code and click email link.

I don't have mobile authenticator, and this mean soon everything you trade with others and/or buy from steam market will be held in void for fifteen days just so you have chance to warn Valve in case your account was stolen. The problem is, their customer service often doesn't respond (at least, with human, not automated reply) within 15 days so the measure is next to useless anyway. And this counts for every trade/purchase. Imagine this in real life - you want to buy baguette for breakfast? Thank you for your money, and now come back in two weeks as we wait to hear from police if your money wasn't stolen. Though, we don't really expect reply so whatever, just wait pointlessly long then, and sorry for inconvenience :smallsigh:

Um, not really. It costs 972 EUR shipped from USA. If you buy from Valve SARL, it costs 950 EUR. I generously applied best case there for Valve, despite the fact only institutions can buy from Luxembourg division, not individual customers, and they would inevitably slap their markup on top. And no, it doesn't include 23% VAT, EU has anti-double taxation law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_value_added_tax). According to them, Valve can pick one fringe half-bankrupt country, pay the negotiated lower tax break sum there, and then ship to whatever they want using customs union rules (if they're not using cherry-picked zero rate derogation, effectively 0% VAT, which they did in the past, albeit on services, not physical goods). That's why their main EU office is in Luxembourg, in fact. So, yeah, the end result is even worse than I stated. I stand corrected :smalltongue:

And that is, you know, even without considering that Vive is made in China, shipping from China to Europort in Rotterdam then to Poland by mail is cheaper than to US East Coast, and if we went by purchasing power parity, Vive costs here anywhere near 2400 to 3300$ (equivalent), so yeah, we'd expect slight break if Valve hopes to have any business in Central and Eastern Europe at all. Of course, it's not the first time this year Valve decided to shaft non-Eurozone countries of Europe (http://rebrn.com/re/valve-discontinued-the-tier-pricing-system-on-steam-for-europea-2493489/), raising prices across the board, so I was possibly too optimistic in expecting them to have any good business sense.

Why we should expect free shipping? Amazon and a lot of other stores does free shipping from much lower bracket, why Valve should be not compared to industrial standards? Hell, even what stands for epitome of greed in gaming circles, Games Workshop, will do it for you on orders above £40/PLN250, and their packages are very unwieldy and individually wrapped. If you're offering worse service than GW, you're doing it wrong.

Well, a mobile authenticator is in theory more secure, simply because your phone is more secure than your e-mail and requires physical possession of the device.

That said, I log onto and off of Steam often enough that I really don't want to be using a mobile authenticator for it. The e-mails are enough to keep me informed.

That's not how that works. They must charge VAT at the rate of the receiving country (http://europa.eu/youreurope/business/vat-customs/cross-border/index_en.htm). And yes, I did go to the order page before my previous post to check that the price included VAT (spoilers, it did). Additionally, several countries have rules requiring that the VAT inclusive price must always be displayed (https://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications/Display-Code.aspx?CodeId=%7B1BB5E9A2-C840-46CB-8211-88E7E34E61B7%7D&ItemId=%7B227C9440-DBB1-485B-8537-3053DDCE3B41%7D).

The loophole you are referring to was for digital goods, and it was closed on 1st January 2015 (http://www.develop-online.net/news/uk-closing-tax-loophole-on-steam-game-downloads/0190842).

Um, not really. It costs 972 EUR shipped from USA. If you buy from Valve SARL, it costs 950 EUR.

Wait, so you can get it at an even better price than the one I listed above? What are you complaining about?

This is all complete bunk.

The price of shipping is either factored into the cost of the goods, or added on as an extra charge. What would you prefer, 971 EUR including shipping, or 899 EUR plus 72 EUR shipping? It makes no difference in the final price, but the latter clearly identifies where each part is going.

The reason Amazon and other companies offer "free shipping" is as an incentive for people to buy more. They factor in their shipping expenses and offer you a discount off the purchase price. Yes, that is effectively all that is. A discount off the purchase price, covered by the markup on the base items.

Amazon does not offer any sort of free shipping to Australia.

Son of Nor actually looks really interesting. Wonder why I've never heard of it before. If it's still available, I'm very interested.

If it's not, I'm also interested in Battle of Sol. I mean, I like space dogfights, but the reviews have me somewhat wary to list this as a first preference…

Hey question.

Is it possible to install Steam in two different machine with the same account, and download in one machine, to be moved into the other machine and played there via whatever data transfer available?

The thing is, I currently have unlimited internet in my current living place, but I most likely is going to move to another place where internet has data cap.

My office has unlimited internet and I could just leave my laptop there overnight to download things (it's totally alright) but obviously my laptop is old crap that's mostly a typing/internet station and can't really play games.

So can I download games in my laptop and transfer it to my home station using flashdisk or whatever? (don't mind it's big transfer or such, I can deal with it)

Step 1: Download game on laptop
Step 2: Start download and let it run for a minute on PC then stop
Step 3: Copy game files from laptop onto USB drive
Step 4: Copy game files onto PC

Steam will want to verify the files but it shouldn't need to download anything.

You can do a local backup of a Steam game, so you could do that on one machine and then restore the backup on the other one? There's also a feature in Steam called in-home streaming which I've used on occasion--basically, you can run the game on one machine and actually play it on the other one; that works best when you're running the game on the more powerful machine and streaming it to the weaker one, though.

While you can just move the files, the best way is to use the system intended for this.

In the Steam drop down menu (the one actually labeled "Steam" in the top left corner), click Backup and Restore Games... then follow the prompts.

Ori is one of many many games on my "to be played list". So many games, and Final Fantasy 9 will likely be released tomorrow.

Right now I'm into Grim Dawn. It's ok, nothing super great, but a nice change of pace, for now, from Diablo 3. It's really hard to find good gear though, because it suffers from the same problem I had with Torchlight. Too many gear affixes means never getting the ones you want. It's also really hard when I'm playing a caster who uses a spell that's based on physical damage. I don't even see how that's fair.

If and when you ever get to Ori, persevere through the parts that are controller-breakingly hard. They usually come with a reward that boils down to "now you can use the cool move you picked up here in the rest of the overworld." (Stupid Ginso Tree)

Is there an official Payday 2 group in the playground, or a thread connected to it?

The beta for the new skill system's been released, and I think it's actually pretty good. It almost feels Borderlands ish, with different skills having mini-skill trees in which you can specialize. The new Mastermind skill tree is hilariously broken; you can get Joker with a four skill point investment, and it feels like it's much more powerful. If you have two people with Joker, you can get lines of hostage cops for days.

Just making cops surrender is hilariously easy now, there's hardly any effort into doing it in the beta. Just try to mark out a Shield or a Taser in a group without a random cop in the general direction throw up their hands.

Turrets have been buffed to ridiculous levels too: You start out with 2 by default, can bring along a maximum of 6 and ANY second Deployable along with you. Cook Off on any difficulty below Death Wish is now almost AFK mode.

Yeah, I'm going to wait for gameplay before getting too excited for it.

On the other hand, it did make me want to try a campaign playthrough again of my favorite Dawn of War game of the franchise, Dark Crusade. But I decided since I already beat the campaign atleast once as each race, I'm going to let my youtube subscribers to vote and pick which faction I'm going to playthrough and dictate my actions and strategies to some extent. However, given that I still only just started my youtube channel only a couple months ago, I'm not sure if I have the subscriber base to get the initial voting in currently. So, if some of you would like to help me, I'm going to leave the video I posted down below in the spoiler and of those of you who would care enough to want to cast a vote and watch a campaign of it, feel free to. For all others, feel free to ignore this post. I wasn't planning to try getting the lower price. Just need to be more discerning about when I buy. Still came out ahead of buying everything separate. I got an absolute killer deal on Tropico 4 with the works. And previously I'd gotten a good enough deal on Civ V Complete. The irony, if I may call it that, is that I'd have paid ten dollars more if I could have gotten it from GOG.com. Their business model I find more appealing, but they tend to have much less of what I'm looking for.

Just finished Alpha Protocol for the first time since my new computer. I had forgotten exactly how difficult the game is when it's not focused on sneaking and gunplay. Failed to find the assassin in Taipei, didn't bring Marburg to justice in Rome (or in the final mission, for that matter), did suborn the Moscow contact. Also didn't find Madison's, Parker's, or Scarlet's dirty little secrets, among others. (I did manage to ferret out Deng's and Mina's dirty little secrets, though. Those're rather simple.)

Sneaking and gunplay, however, remains the most wildly imbalanced thing since the Galloping Gertie bridge. (Total invisibility to non-machines for 20 seconds! 6 shots fired with pinpoint accuracy in less than a second! Silent hostile eliminations at range, from cover!) Seriously, there is no reason not to carry a fully tricked-out pistol at all times, and shotguns aren't even worth considering in the slightest.

Ah, I thought you were talking about the shooty parts in general. That said, I did do a rookie run with the AR where if things went loud, they stayed loud. While sniping bad guys outside of the AI's detection range was very silly, the sheer damage the AR puts out was silly (I ended up two shotting bosses).

Steam's basically unusable right now - the servers are crying under the heavy load. Taking me multiple attempts to change pages, and it takes a minute or so to time out when it fails.

May just have to come back later to see if there's anything interesting. I mostly don't care about the sales, but the change in format often does throw up games that I missed in the unrelenting stream of shovelware that Steam puts out these days.

I have a few wish list things, but other than Cthulhu Saves the World, I can't actually run any of them on my current system and don't foresee an upgrade in the near future. Mostly just placeholders so I can find them again if I forget the exact title. I scored big with GOG so I don't have much of anything on Steam that I didn't get cheaper and without DRM. Not exactly on the cutting edge of gaming, me.

Just as well, I've seen about three things out of five hundred on the discovery queue that I was interested in at all. We'll see on the last day of the sale if there's anything worth it. Only game I've snagged so far is Far Cry 4.

So far, it's served as my yearly reminder of just what a crappy company Ubisoft is. There's really not much more rage-inducing than going through Steam authentication to prove a game is yours to then have the only affect of that to be launching an entirely different company's store.

Seriously Ubisoft. If you want your game on Steam, either sack up and accept their authentication or don't bloody well do it and rely on your own software entirely for digital sales. And I wouldn't even care that much if your own back-end software wasn't so stupid in the first place - making players google to find out how to turn off the FPS counter (turned on automatically because why?) doesn't exactly give a good first impression.

Also got the X-Com 2 digital deluxe edition.

This is a bad year to be a broke gamer...

That said, I managed to squeeze an extra $10 out of somewhere and picked up Dishonored and Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. 2 games I've been meaning to get, just been preoccupied with the PS4 over computer lately (the aforementioned FFX/X-2, Ratchet and Clank, etc)

I don't even have a smartphone capable of using it.

Ditto. I just have my PC and that's it.

Game-wise I'll probably wait a few days before buying a game. Pay rent first and after some thought maybe I'll know what I want.

So, despite getting excited, I literally cannot muster up any interest in what is there.

Disappointing sale. Maybe helped because I already have what I want, but still. Really desultory performance. Nothing is sticking out without the flash sales, and so I'm stuck looking through at stuff, that despite being on wishlist is... not needed.

I have 2 newish strategy games, a 4x recently patched and a total war with 6 faction all very different, cities skylines, and a heavily modded rome 2 I need to play with.

Found a game that didn't go on sale immediately but did on day 2, Pixel Dungeon. Unless it just wasn't updated, it seems some games may go on sale later?

Also, Fable Anniversary is 85% off. Wondering if it's worth grabbing for someone who has never played any game in the series but has seen a good bit of it. I've heard a good bit of "meh" about this version.

To be honest from the screenshots of Fable Anniversary it looks like they made the graphics worse, in the original they had a more cartoony look while here they've gone for "Realistic" i.e. Brown.

Edit: So is Blood Bowl two worth picking up or not, I haven't played the first but i does look interesting at the least. Also has anyone tried out The Last Leviathan, again it looks interesting but as always I'm wary of the Early access tag.

Seems odd they would do that? They got rid of flash sales because, with refunds now being a thing, you could buy the game on sale early on, then see it on flash sale and go through the refund process and buy it again at the lower price--they don't want to do all that extra work, so the sale discount is the same throughout the summer sale period now. Putting a game on sale partway through the sales would have the same effect, surely?

Bought Space Engineers after missing the last time it went on sale. Other than that, the only things I want they don't have or aren't on sale. Or I already got them for a better price during another sale.

If one buys the game at regular price not long before the sale, I suppose so.

Are we still doing summer sale Steam card trading in this thread?

Extra: 2, 2, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10
Need: 1, 9

I may be buying some more bits and pieces during the sale (plus you get a free daily card when you browse through your Discovery Queue), so will keep this list updated.

Badge crafted, sorry!

I dunno, but mine look like this:

Extra: 1 (3), 4 (3), 6 (2), 7(1), 8 (5), 9 (2), 10 (3)
Need: 2, 5

Also you can get up to 3 daily cards, just start a new queue.

edit: there was a 7 in my queue today

edit 2: Level 1 Badge done, I don't think I'll bother with Level 2.
If you want any of my leftover cards, just PM me your Steam name and which one(s)

I just found out that I can't actually trade at the moment - I need to use the "Mobile authenticator" thing for 7 days, otherwise Steam puts a 15-day hold on the trade.
Either way, the cards expire before it works. :smallfrown:

Got an item code for a steam game called Brawlhalla. Since I don't really mess with it, I was wondering if any other Playgrounders heard about it and would like the code.

Item code is for a White Fang Gnash Legend Skin, Long Too Spear Skin, Howling Skull Hammer Skin, Gnash Legend Unlock and full version of Brawlhalla.

Considering that you're replying to a post from 6 pages ago which was posted pretty much exactly a full year ago, I'm highly doubtful.

Just wanted to point out that the Bastion/Transistor + Soundtracks bundle is only $10 right now. I feel like either of them alone (without the soundtracks) are easily worth $20 so this is a fantastic deal for anyone that doesn't have them. Also, if you have one but not the other, you can still get 82% off whatever items in it you don't have (so long as you get all of them you don't have).

PC Gamer are giving away free Steam keys for Lovely Planet at the moment, in return for a couple of actions including a trailer video you can let run in the background while browsing (http://www.pcgamer.com/win-a-free-steam-key-for-lovely-planet/?utm_source=Bundle+Stars+Newsletter&utm_campaign=412314e531-LovelyPlanet_Giveaway_07_13_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3437eaaeba-412314e531-419702605&mc_cid=412314e531&mc_eid=ef7b164bee).

Steam appears top down across a good majority of Europe (including the UK) and a fair number of other places.

I have looked, but thus far, I have found no explanaion or announcements.

Somewhat trivial question, but if I play a game now, will log my play-time be logged (ether by game or by the Steam app) for when steam comes back up or...?

I do believe the client should log it if you're still logged in. Playtime, achievements, everything, that's kind of the whole reason Steam games require the Steam client to be running and logged in, even if in Offline Mode.

Yup. When the Steam servers come back up, it'll notice that your local profile you generated while you were offline is more recent than your cloud profile and it'll ask if you want to update the cloud profile with the local one, or just keep the cloud one.

'Kay. Ta. I know it seems a silly thing to ask about (especially since Crusdaer Kings II doesn't have enable achievements if you don't pay hardcore mode), but I have been sort of spoiled in liking to know how many hours I sinking into games...!

As this is, perhaps surprisingly, the first major outage in Steam I've actually personally encountered (which, in a way, I suppose, says Valve are clearly doing something right...) I wasn't quite sure about the warning it popped up.

Also, looks like Steam might be back up now anyway; but given it appeared to be an unplanned issue, one can never be sure how long it might have lasted otherwise.

The rumour is that the Steam servers supposedly got DDOS'ed by some group as a result of the CS:GO skins debacle. There's a fair bit of denial by other observers that the group has the technical and logistical capabilities to do so and they believe the group claimed responsibility in much the same way that some terror organisations falsely claim responsibility after any attack to boost their profile.

Hey, is this always how it's been or it's new.

Recently I noticed that if there's a game bundle in steam, and if I already have some of them, I can buy the bundle just for the part I don't already own with the same bundle discount. Which is important because game bundle is usually significantly more discounted than single game discount.

Is this always how it's been, and I just never noticed because I never bother to check a bundle when I already have part of it, or it's new feature?

Its a recent-ish change. Think it came about 2-3 years ago now.

If the collection is called a "Package", you can't do this. If it is called a "Bundle", you can. Basically, each company must set how the collection is released, and it isn't an automatic retroactive change. Both the original "Package" format and the new "Bundle" format can be created by the company.
