Ok, the title pretty much says it all. I've exhausted Google, maybe the community here can help me.
The first book I'm trying to remember is about some guy in the middle ages who gets a magic sword and time travels to modern (1980s when the book was written?) day Philadelphia (or was it New York?), I think he makes friends with a girl from the modern era, then a gang attacks him and her and he cuts them up with the sword, which makes for an unusual report on the police radio...
The other book is set I believe in Colonial/early America with some youth who has to leave his family around age 10 and becomes an apprentice to carpenter. Not a very happy thing, and it includes some corporal punishment. Then thanks to his talent and hard work he surpasses even the more senior apprentices and becomes a journeyman carpenter. Or actually joiner, or furniture maker rather, not carpenter. I think he was making chests and chairs and stuff.
Both were juvenile fiction. Thanks anybody!
