If i am not mistaken, didn't they mention releasing something detailing you how to update old characters?

You can find some attempts on Reddit and such, but to my knowledge no official guide exists. It's a completely different beast.

I was searching and can't find it, however, i could have sworn they said somewhere they were planning on releasing ways to do it later on.

No. I highly doubt they ever will. Your best bet would be to make a post asking forum members for advice on updating your specific character.

Well if you had a specific character or campaign book in mind the good folks here at GitP are usually happy to help you out.

Interestingly enough it seems folks have found 1e/2e conversions easier than 3.x conversions.

not terribly surprising.

3.x has about a bajillion options using just core. throw in 3rd party stuff and i would imagine there's an awful lot that just can't readily be updated.

They were planning on doing conversion guides, but haven't done any yet.

From folks that have done it, the advice is to skip the straight conversion, and just recreate the PC concept using 5E rules.

looking at some of my 3.5 characters, there doesn't seem to adequate means of making them yet. As to be expect, the edition is new.

What did you have in mind? Maybe we can help.

First step is to throw away any magic items you have, the system isn't set up to have a character built around buying two immovable rods at the corner store now (or whatever).

Beyond that, if you ignore mechanics of your old characters and look at concept than the conversations are not too tough

I did it as a thought experiment and came to the conclusion that the best way is to consider what the character is and instead of focusing on a direct conversion go for the classes and abilities that give you the feel and flavor of the character. And remember that everything is considerably scaled back in 5e. Not having skills with ranks in the 30's and 40's doesn't mean you did it wrong.

For that matter, when DMing keep in mind that scaling DCs with level is not the right way to do it in 5e either.
