Almost certainly (s)he is a girl or a boy. The statistical probablility of being both or neither is very small (but finite, so the possibility can not be discounted entirely, especially as it's a complete other species we're dealing with here... elfologists find it very difficult to study the sexual characteristics of elves due to having +5 arrows of scientist-slaying shot into their eyeballs (or possibly just getting Power Word: Blind cast on them).

V's gender is in a quantum state of supposition. V is neither male nor female until his* gender is actually observed. On a similar note, V's raven is also in a supposition of quantum states between existence and non-existence, thus the reason why Blackwing pops in an out of existence. Theory poses the possibility that this is all due to quantum many-worlds theory being correct, and there are many universes where Vaarsuvius is male as well as many universes with a female Vaarsuvius. Likewise, Blackwing exists in some of these universes as V's familiar, but doesn't exist in all of them. I hypothesize that the reason V is effected so strongly on a macroscopic level by quantum mechanics is that the source of his magic is dependent on tapping other universes for his spell energy.

There is also an alternative theory that a higher dimensional universe encapsulates the order of the stick. This hypothetical three dimensional universe would have objects which would exist at right angles to the normal world. Circles would then become spheres, and squares would become cubes for example. This could possibly be extended farther as well, so cubes can become terresects, and spheres into glomes if we were to postulate the existence of 4-d universe for example. How this effects V's gender still remains to be seen, but it is possible that V's gender is obscured because it really exists as a 3 dimensional object, and it's two dimensional shadow doesn't give us enough information. Again, being a three dimensional creature would give V enormous powers which could be the source of his magic.
