You were in the city of Neverwinter when your dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hired you to escort a wagon to Phandalin.

Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town, while the five of you follow with the supplies.
You will be paid 10 gp each by the owner of Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin, when you deliver the wagon safely to that trading post.

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren
Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to
the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of
days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited
and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip,
saying only that he and his brothers had found "something
big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting
his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in
Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with
a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed
to arrive early to "take care of business."
You've spent the last few days following the High Road
south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east
along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far,
but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have
been known to lurk along the trail.

Rolander

The young paladin of Torm was happy and satisfied as he walked along the Triboar Trail with his new companions. Not to be doing something as mundane as guarding a trader's goods, but to be journeying through wilder lands, to be away from crowded Waterdeep, away from his money grubbing relatives. Anything could happen out here. This was how great journeys began. It seemed as good a time as any to get to know his new companions, they might end up with each other's life in their hands after all.

"Tell me Dacen," He said to the cleric as they walked along the trail, Who is your divine patron? I tell you freely that I follow the teachings of Torm. Perhaps I'm being too forward and won't blame you if you don't wish to share, but I've always been curious about such things."

Dacen

Dacen trudged along, arms crossed and slightly hunched, looking this was and that every so often. Being away from the city was abnormal for him. Especially for this long. Having companions was likely as abnormal. Having companions he likely didn't need to worry about betraying him, was unheard of. He tried relaxing, but old habits and all of that.
The paladin made him most uneasy, and the question set him on edge for a moment. He hesitated in answering, but decided that he was going to need to eventually.

Shoving his hand into his pocket, he drew out an amulet depicting a six point snowflake. "Auril, the Ice Goddess. She answered my prayers, she got my service." He answers, shoving the amulet back into his pocket. He hoped the answer was enough to hold off anymore questions, still his next several strides angled him another foot away from the man.

Allyson (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=268558)

Allyson walks on the left side of the cart. Her eyes continually scan the road ahead and then dart to her pack, which was stowed on the same side of the cart that she was walking on, to make sure no one was trying to take her things. Old habits die hard she thinks to herself, as she checks her pack yet again. She didn't really know her companions that well, but 10 gold was a lot of money for something as simple as escorting a caravan on a two day trip... and a good excuse to get out of the city after her last job... she is broken out of her contemplation as the paladin tries to start up a conversation.

She wasn't too sure about working with the paladin, Rolander. He had the air of nobility about him, his overall bearing, and now his open admission of serving Torm, perhaps the most lawful of the gods. She didn't necessarily like him, but he was the easiest of the four for her to figure out.

The high elf, Ariell was another she was unsure of. Her kind in general weren't fond of wood elves or half-elves, and Allyson's elven heritage came from her wood elf father. Also, the mage had an appetite. Seeing someone eat like that always made Allyson uncomfortable, as food was always scarce in her childhood days. To this day she still ate little and usually saved something for later, just in case. Her hand moved to her cloak pocket to check the biscuit that she had stashed there at breakfast was still there, it was.

She noted the cleric, Dacen's, short response to Rolander's question and quickly pulled up her hood to hide her shock at the mention of Auril, the ice goddess, despite that she couldn't help but feel a shiver run down her spine. She had never encountered an Aurilite before, but she had heard rumours aplenty.

The druid, Therdan, seemed more to her liking, with the except of his dogs. She wasn't a big fan of dogs, since she had to fight for food against them in the alleyways of her youth and more recently had to run and climb to escape them after liberating something from their owners. But that was before she had learned to feed a dog sedatives before her liberation attempts.

All in all this was about as motley of a group as she had ever seen, but at least the trip was almost over, and she'd be 10 gold richer...

The pudgy, blonde moon elf strolled along with light steps as she admired the scenery around them. She'd been quiet thus far in the trip, preferring to listen to sounds of nature and conversations of the other travelers. When a conversation starts up between the holy warrior and the reluctant priest, however, she decides to chime in.

"Religion falls a bit outside of the areas of my expertise. Why don't you tell me a bit about this Torm, Rolander?"

"A-Auril, you say?" Rolander says, stammering a bit. "Well, that should keep us warm if we're ever stuck in a blizzard together. Thank you for sharing." The paladin is a bit taken aback, but attempts to mask it. A follower of one of the Gods of Fury. I must be judicious. I will judge him by his actions, but I will also be aware,he thinks.

"Oh gladly." He says to the wizard. "Torm is the God of righteousness. He is the greatest champion of what is good and true among all the gods. He is also the God of duty. He teaches that all who are able must strive to protect whoever is in need. That we must be prepared to give our very life, as he did, to any worthy cause."

"Odd? Yes, I suppose it is." Rolander says with amusement. "But it's true," He adds. "Over a century ago, before the Spellplague, there was a so called "Time of Troubles". The gods themselves walked the Realms, reduced in stature, but still powerful. In a city far to the east, the evil god Bane and Torm clashed. Though Bane outstripped him in power, Torm managed to destroy him by sacrificing himself and the willing sacrifice of many of his followers. That would have been the end, but a power beyond even the gods saw the sacrifice of the Torm and was moved to return him to life. Torm did not know he would be returned, but he did not hesitate to give his life. We should all be ready to die the same way in defense of a worthy cause."

Rolander looks thoughtful for a bit before answering Dacen. "It's true that much is unfair in life. Good may die and evil may prosper. I was born to privilege, others to hardship. I've sworn to repay my lucky birth with service. Fairness is something I seek to bring wherever I can. But mortals will always fall short of perfection." The paladin chuckles a bit and continues, "It seems gods have a hard time staying dead. Many have returned. Including that tyrant Bane."

Therdan walked alongside his dogs, occasionally scratching their heads, just behind the ears (their favorite spot, so they said). He watched as Manannan sniffed the air for what he assumed to be a rabbit, or maybe a groundhog, if he could find such a creature all the way out here.

Therdan tended to the solitary life, but he needed the coin, and an excuse to come to a new city. He grew tired of staying in the same place for too long, so this was a good reason to relocate.
"I would have to agree with the young lass. Gods are well and good, but not all gods are interested in common folk. I do my best to honor any god who would look to preserve nature, but I do not align myself with any of them."

He kept walking, keeping an eye on his dogs, and an eye on the horses, just in case.
"Manannan,"
His ears perked up, showing that yes, he was listening.
"Stay here."
Manannan's ears drooped. He was very much looking forward to chasing that mysterious smell.

Therdan chuckled, and looked around to spot if anyone suspicious was close to them.

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

While small, the crossbow couldn't be shot with one hand, but he figured better dropping the shield before shooting, than being shot so he couldn't shoot.

Once finished, he looks back to the group, "I'm going to have a look." he says in hushed tones.

"How do you think we should proceed? I can walk in first. Dacen you seem to be quite perceptive, maybe you could walk in front alongside me in case of goblin traps. Therdan puts his shield back, and straps his spears onto his dogs again. He then sends them back to the edge of the forest. They trot back to where they were, and lay down in the light brush. Their ears perked up and alert.

He casts produce flame again, his hands flickering to life.

Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage.
The cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end, and is filled with the stench of animals. Savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greet your ears where two wolves are chainedup just inside the opening. Each wolf's chain leads to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite.

Loudly climbing the chimeny, Rolander sticks his head out and sees sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness.
A larger opening leads north down a set of natural stone steps, the roar of falling water echoing from beyond. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder.

"Me, Klarg is mighty warchief! We have many riches!", you see a Bugbear accompanied by a wolf, browsing through the crates to the south.

Is he taking to me? Rolander wonders with some alarm, ducking down a bit. No, I guess he's talking to himself. Or to the wolf.

The paladin is unsure of what his next move should be. He seems to have gotten the drop on a warchief, yet how long could he go unnoticed? Could the others get up here in time? Part of him(the foolish part) wants to announce himself and join battle. But he might be dead before aid could arrive. He looks about for a place to secure the rope and signal the others to come up as quietly as possible. If lucky, everyone might arrive before he was noticed.
