"As surely as I have traveled between the worlds, as surely as I have felt the cold mountain winds of dragons' domain and the searing dunes, I know this to be true: all things ultimately come back to stories, and our lives are no different."
-- Saevan the Marred, On the Nature of Worlds, Chapter 10

[Moonport]
Moonport, a city under an eternal night sky. A former hub of inter-world travel, now a melting pot with a few new lumps.
For the last few weeks… well, really, last two months, Heartless attacks have been on the decline. This is a very good thing for Moonport, as people can relax more. The Town Guard has had less and less to worry about.

It would be a sunny day if the sun were a thing here; as it is, the moon is waxing from its morning sliver into a solid half, and the sky is a mild ultramarine dotted with faint stars around it. People go about their morning business; the few Town Guards on the graveyard shift are already gratefully snoring in their beds, replaced by the morning watch, but there's no call for any great deal of vigil. A guard whose great grandpappy was a beat cop in the Big Easy sips spiced tea from a paper cup on a street corner, enjoying the wakeup call of the beverage and the cool, quiet silver-blue brightness of morning.

In the Grey Quarter... well, the Grey Quarter is always a little quiet. The Nobodies live here, and even the ones who pretend they're normal don't get loud. Some people find the quiet unnerving, but the residents generally find it agreeable. A young lady with silver hair and eyes sits on a bench in front of her apartment building to enjoy the morning air as she studies her white magic texts.

It's a nice easy morning in Moonport. Let's see what everyone's up to, shall we?

"An acceptable unpleasantry and a necessary one for a good cause. That's how your people would put it."
Far away and yet not so far away, blazing white light cuts through a grey haze. Processional bells jingle softly in the distance as the white shape in the mirror's surface shifts slightly, white on white, barely visible.

"Nevertheless, I'm sure you understand my qualms. Call it misplaced solidarity if you will."

"Real bleeding heart you are---or, well, you know what I mean."

"If your ability to manage this situation is even half your ability for tasteless humor, I will forgive you for that. I will be watching with all due interest."

The figure in the mirror smiles a white grin in a white face on a white background, and the blaze of light dims.

Quin: [Location Park]

Out in the local Park Quin snoozes away loudly up in a tree with no cares in the world to speak of what so ever. She dreams of a giant pudding monster doing battle with a giant cyborg fried shrimp with lobster claws.

Such unique dreams were common to Quin and her very active imagination.. That or being the starving artist that she was food was something on her mind quite often.. That and where can she find fresh underwear?

A few acorns fell from a branch above her making a loud tapping noise on her mask, she turned over and then fell from her branch and onto the grass below awaking with a groan.

"Do, I really need to be up now?" She lifted her mask only slightly to rub her eyes clean of any dirt from the fall but not enough to expose herself unmasked. She believed that keeping her mask on at all times made her more mysterious and more likely to draw in interest.

She looked begun to walk around and see if anyone had came into the park yet. Never too early to start the day after all.

Chi wanders the streets of the Grey Quarter, as he often does these days. He enjoys the serenity of a neighborhood populated by people who actually are as empty as he sometimes feels. The line between sleepless night and early morning blurs as the boy stretches his arms and yawns. His left hand idly practices with an invisible sword as he turns a corner and sees the faint outline of a figure on a bench in the distance.

"Huh, who is that?" he mutters to himself.

Chi wipes away the tiredness from his eyes and is able to recognize who it is. But in the absence of any pressing reason to speak to Neiz, Chi's thoughts drift back to sword combinations and ways to incorporate his magic in combat. Anything to distract himself from the guilt and misery that was always in the back of his mind. Anything to temporarily forget.

The sounds of Moonport bustling about its morning routine floated by Tira as she stood on the edge of town, spear in hand and armor fully donned. Today was the day she would be recognized among her people as a full-grown woman, and truly take her place within her tribe. It was an easy prospect to be excited by for sure, and Tira admitted to a fluttering of anticipation in her stomach. But she couldn't let that distract her, she still had one final trial to pass. Like any other Ronso, she had to pass one of three tests - a trial by combat, a trial by skill, or a trial of words. Wanting to eventually become a member of the guard, Tira had elected to undergo a trial by combat.

Taking several deep breaths, Tira let her senses sweep the area, taking brief note of anything noteworthy and discarding the rest - at this time and place, most things were discarded as irrelevant. Picking up her spear, Tira began practicing her swings, both warming up her body and getting ready for the day ahead.

As morning came to Moonport, Vic opened his eyes and immediately got out of bed, at the same time as he did every morning. stretching slightly to loosen up his body, he walked over to the small kitchen in his apartment. Outside the Grey quarter was silent, as it was most of the time, but it did not bother him. Before his change he would have been woken at this time by his father working, and it was so deeply ingrained in him that he still got up early.
Cutting some slices of bread and toppin them with cheese and salted ham, he considered what he should do today.
Feeling that he wanted to have some extra exercise, he decided to train in the park today. When he had eaten his breakfast, he washed himself, put on his clothes, and went out the door, grabbing his sword and gauntlet on the way.
He started jogging towards the park, taking a longer route through some of the adjoining quarters.

When he arrived at the park about 30 minutes later, he was sufficiently warmed up, and drew his sword, starting to go through some of his kata's. When he had gone through the simpler ones, he stopped to think.
"Because I had no real combat experience, these techniques helped little against the heartless. I should focus on the simpler techniques until they are instinctive, rather than train the complex ones, for now..." He said to himself.
He then repeated the simple kata's again, and again, falling into a routine where he trained without thinking. He was so focused on it that he noticed little of his surroundings.
Parry, thrust, sidestep, slash, parry, thrust...
It went on and on, the motions coming fluidly to him, as he went through them with as little excess movement as possible.

Nerissa

Nerissa grabs her bag, hurrying along the streets of the Grey Quarter. She knows that the Nobodies are perfectly safe, but she always feels slightly nervous around so many of them. As she goes, she sees Neiz, one of the few Nobodies she actually knows (along with one of her instructors), sitting on a bench.

Neiz! she says. How are you?

Neiz looks up to see Nerissa, a fellow mage. She turns up her mild smile a notch or two; Nerissa is a bright and agreeable person, even if she is a bit of a bleeding heart no, some Nobodies use that as an uncharitable euphemism for normals. "Idealistic sympathetic romantic" is quite suitable for what Nerissa is, thank you very much.

"Good morning, Nerissa. I am doing quite well today, just getting a little pre-reading done for that upcoming curative exam. And how are you?"

Luitger pulls himself out of bed, the quiet Nobody groaned to himself as he does so. Even after his change, waking up in the morning is still his most difficult chore of the day, not training, not combat itself, just pulling himself out of bed. He went quickly through his morning rituals, ending with putting on his breastplate and resting his strange looking spear on his shoulder as he walks out the door.

Luitger had felt strange stirrings in his chest more often than usual recently, emotions or what was left of them, he sometimes thought. As he walks down the street he possibly notices Neiz and Nerissa. He stops off a short distance away to watch the pair, trying to gauge whether to say hello or not.

[Moonport: Wall]

On his post on the town wall, a guard looks out over the relatively narrow section of land connecting Moonport to the mainland and making them a peninsula rather than an island. Flickers of movement prompt him to bring up his binoculars. Peering out, he sees a few shadowbugs, the weakest of those monsters. Then a few more emerge from their little dark portals.
And more.
Then some of the herky-jerky armored ones they call Knights… and more.
A field of brief dark portals flare open as scores of Heartless pull themselves through, and the guard frantically sounds the alarm.

But the warning is going up already through the city; in shadowy corners, Heartless are beginning to crawl through. Perhaps those months of relative inactivity weren’t lethargy on the monsters’ part, but preparation for a massive assault.

From his place atop the wall, the guard looks back through his binoculars into the Heartless host, knees shaking. He picks out a humanoid shape among the twisted bodies, a figure like a cloaked mummy with glinting fingertips. Its spindly hands make gestures, those fingers trailing lines of red-orange light. Despite the great distance, he hears a single word, though not shouted---it as as if it were whispered inches from his ear.
“Firaja.”

The wall facing the landbridge gains a ragged new entrance as chunks of stone and metal sail into the sky from a yellow-orange bloom of fire and force. The raid siren is already screeching its banshee call as civilians scramble for the nearest shelter entrance, seeking the safety of the concrete tunnels down under the earth, its walls full of sorcerous warding to keep out the monsters.

Captain Tybalt of the Guard is barking orders left and right, directing the experienced members of his troops to move in and hold back the menace while the newer recruits usher people down into the raid tunnels. The professors and proctors of the mage schools sweep from their lectures and studies, ready to rain arcane death on the invaders while their students are rushed to safety.

[Moonport: Grey Quarter]

When the sirens begin, Neiz stands. "Heartless raid. Big. Get your things." She's already running into her apartment, yanking the door open and stuffing some necessities into a shoulderbag. One Heartless attack is enough for her, thank you very much, and she has no delusions of her own ability to stand up to one of even half this magnitude.

In the scramble for safety, where are you?

"Goodness what the hell is that noise all about?" Quin noticed people beginning to run like chickens with their heads chopped off in fear. Her leg still behind her head brought it back down and begun to run after the people fleeing from the park "Hey wait up! I don't understand! What's going on, why is everyone so afraid of the sirens?!" She casted float on herself and skated her way to see if anyone would stop and answer her. She would had casted haste but then conversations would of taken FOREVER on her end and she would have to speak at about half speed.

"Would you stop panicking for just a moment!" Quin started to regret not sleeping by the Grey Quarter. At-least the people who keep referring to themselves as nobodies remain calm.

And so Tira practiced. The movements of her spear flowed from her like water, hardening to deadly ice as she struck. She kept an eye and ear on her surroundings, but overall, things seemed peaceful. Her practice was eventually interrupted by the elder of her tribe.

"Tira."

Tira swiftly flowed back into an idle position, turning to face her elder. "Yes, elder Kirano?" she said.

"Tira is ready for today, I trust?"

Tira nodded, though she couldn't keep a look of apprehension from her face. "Tira is ready."

The elder examined her for a moment. "Good," he said. "Meet elder Kirano in the circle. It is time to see if Tira is ready to become a woman in the eyes of the tribe."

Tira bowed. "Yes, elder Kirano," she said.

***

Tira made her way back to the circle at the center of the Ronso sector. The circle was at the very center, decorated with various pieces of Ronso culture - feathers, stone pillars, and the broken horns of the (thankfully few) Ronso who had broken the law and been cast out. Surrounding the circle at a safe distance were the three main lodges of the Ronso - the Hunter's Lodge, the Shaman's Lodge, and the Crafter's Lodge. Outside of these three lodges were the homes of the Ronso, their shops mostly being located in the shopping district of Moonport.

In the center of the circle stood the elder, garbed in light armor and wielding the Spirit Lance. Around the circle, the entire Ronso tribe was gathered to watch the trial, as it was a major event in the life of a young Ronso. Tira walked through the crowd and into the circle. The elder opened his mouth to speak, when ...

The elder took charge, herding the civilians to the shelters while those in the town guard (as many of them were) ran to help with the defense of the city. As the sirens start blaring, Vic stops his training and looks in the general direction of the noise.
With a frown he sheathes his sword. "This is not good..." He says to himself, before turning towards the exit where some other people are hurrying out of the park.
He notices what seems to be a young woman in a garish outfit with a mask flitting around the other people aimlessly.
Recalling vaguely that he has seen her before, doing performances around town, he walks over to her briskly and taps her shoulder.
"You should leave and head for the shelters. The Heartless will be everywhere soon." He tells Quin calmly, before moving on without looking back.
Vic makes his way through the crowd slowly but surely, keeping an eye out for people falling behind and trying to help where he can. While he has no strong opinion on it himself, he knew how unpleasant it was for his family and friends when he was changed by a Heartless. He has no wish for others to suffer the same fate.

"Right! -Hang on then... What's a heartless exactly? I think I've heard that mentioned before... Wait up!" Quin gave pursuit to Vic. A man who thus far is the closest thing to any actual answers and not frightened screaming. She casted haste on top of her float spell already in effect from earlier allowing her to move gracefully and quickly amongst the chaos.

She reached out for Vic, a light shined from her palm for a moment without meaning to cast anything, but with no results. She went to touch his shoulder and spoke to him in a bit of a jumble mess "Just a moment if you would so kindly explain to me what exactly is going on I would very much appreciate that. What is a heartless and where is a shelter and why do I need shelter? If I'm to be afraid I think I should gotta know why?" Her words came out like a child high from the intoxication of too much sugar.

Taken aback by the torrent of questions, Vic stops and turns to Quin.
"Heartless are... creatures. monsters." He says, realising that he has never considered exactly what their nature is.
"Monsters that come in many forms and attack people to take their hearts, from what I understand. I dont know where they come from originally, but if a person is killed by a heartless another heartless is born."
He thinks for a moment, before continuing.
"As far as I know, in most cases people simply disappear after being taken by the heartless, but sometimes they are simply changed instead of killed. Into what you people call nobodies. Not that I understand the moniker. It is my heart that was taken, not my body..." He says thoughtfully, frowning slightly.

He then shakes his head, refocusing on whats important. "Anyway, we should go to the shelters, because they were made to protect us from Heartless attacks. You should hurry. I am not sure what Heartless would do to a nobody like me, so I shall stay behind a bit to ensure that these people get to safety." He says, gesturing to the surrounding people. "You should just follow the others to the shelter, since you clearly still have a heart for the heartless to take."

"Wait like they actually rip out your heart and eat it? Blood and gore everywhere? How are you still alive? And-and what do you mean you people? I just got here a few months ago! I think at least... I actually don't really know but details details.." Quin finished the statement tapping the side of her mask pondering what the details exactly were.

Quin looked around her at the frightened folk. "As you can tell by me hovering about two feet off the ground and how quickly I was able to catch up and how odd my speech is right now, I am or at-least was maybe, some sort of magician mage type person before losing my memory and I know some magic. I can aide you. If you're willing to fight for the safety of others you shouldn't have to fight alone... Granted I'll probably turn tail and run at the first sign of trouble but I can at-least help you out juuust a little bit. So, my name is Quin and I'll be at your service good sir and all that."

She said making exaggerated poses and head twitches. "I have a friend in town. Nice girl, she gives me food and a place to sleep. In short I have something worth defending I guess... That and I just realized that if you fail we're all going to die horrible agonizing deaths." She clapped her hands together rapidly and nervously as images over her corps flung on the street with a gaping hole in the chest filled her head. "Totally got nerves of steel here. Nope nothing to worry about!"

"No, they don't actually make holes in your chest, its more like...." Vic starts, before thinking better of it. "There's no time for this now. And I am not staying behind to fight. One heartless took me down last time, so I do not relish my chances against an army. And while I am not sure what happens when a nobody dies, I have no desire to find out."
Looking at the crowd and making sure that no one fell behind, he glances at Quin. "I simply wish to make sure that none of those here get left behind when going for the shelters. My friends and family were highly distressed at how I changed after the incident, and I imagine no one else wishes to go through it. So lets get these people to safety. Oh, and I'm Vic."

The satyr will be able to hear the call for junior guards to get to the shelters ASAP; from his window ((I'm assuming there is one)) he can see Captain Tybalt fighting in the street. The old veteran keeps himself in the best shape he can, his spear sweeping and thrusting as his shield blocks and shoves. Another guard boots Aristotle's door open, the gangly kid's helmet slipping a bit (a bit too late to get it resized now!).

The nearest shelter entrance is thankfully not far---in fact, it's inside the guard barracks itself.

Neiz has her smile back in full swing, sitting down on a crate before a loose group of children and performing some cantrips of aerokinesis. Teachers aren't terribly impressed by, say, spinning three small balls in the air above your hand---but scared kids with a need for some distraction are a much more willing audience.

Jumping across the crowd, Tira interposed herself between the Heartless and its victim. The Heartless managed to scrape her, but Tira managed to get in a swing, destroying the Heartless. A wisp of red smoke emerged as the heartless vanished in a puff of inky darkness; Tira grasped it, her wound healing up in an instant. Chi can converse with his family while the rest arrive/interact, I don't want to use up all the IC posts :smalltongue:

Luitger follows Neiz and once he reaches the entryway he takes up a position near the door, waiting to help guide the locals and prevent them from degenerating further into a panic. He keeps his spear at his side as he constantly looks over his shoulder to watch for any of the heartless.

"Its really cramp in here. Like super cramp... I don't mean to cause anyone anymore panick but if I were a heart eating abomination heartless thing I think I'd probably go where there's the most people. So wouldn't keeping everyone all in one spot be a horrible idea? This is like an all you can eat buffet just waiting to be opened up.. and then eated." Shivers went down Quin's spine as gory images as to what she believed a heartless could possibly look like flooded her mind and what the act of eating a heart without leaving gore would look like despite what she was told earlier. Her heart kept beating like a drum as if it was trying to leap from her chest. Well at-least that had to prove to her she had one like Vic said.

Nice guy that Vic. A bit odd, but most people who refer to themselves as nobodies are a bit odd.

Once Tira made her way into the main shelter she immediately looked around to see if she could spot any of her own kind. However, her search was interrupted when she hear the homeless jester talking.

"That would be impossible," said Tira, altering course towards the jester. "These walls are warded against Heartless attacks with some of the strongest magic on our world."

"Our world? What do you mean by Our world? Also wait... Wouldn't the walls that kept the heartless out in the first place be as strong as these walls?" Quin casted float on herself and got comfortable sitting in the air with her legs folded. "I'm certain whoever is in charge of everyone not being eaten is doing a good job but I'm just a tad bit frighten. I think this is my first time in this situation. I'm not exactly certain."

The Harlequin held out her right hand to exchange a shake and a light appeared around it once again. She quickly took her hand back to her chest and gave her left hand. "Sorry for some reason that keeps happening today... Third or fourth time. I think I used to be some sort of grand magician or something. Might explain the getup y'know? I mean let's face it who in their right mind would wear this in day to day life otherwise... A WIZARD! ...Probably... I said my name is Quin, right?"

Yeah, of-course I can't remember anything before waking up in a park but I know what black jack and hookers are.. No that's perfectly alright and not depressing at all.. So, it seemed cute." Quin still in the same pose sitting in the air turned counter clockwise 180 degrees, head pointed to the ground.

She let out a sigh as she positioned her body to get ready for the spell to eventually fade. Stretching her legs and arms out. "Don't worry this happens sometimes. Give it a moment and the spell ought run out of time anyways."

Walking over, he adressed them quietly. "Luitger, Neiz." He said, taking up position beside the door, opposite Luitger, leaning against the wall. "How are the others from the Grey quarter? "Our fellows all appear to be here and largely unhurt. It does not seem that any major panic has broken out.

Aristotle and the gangly kid make it down here, finally. They, and others, may notice that the Mayor---a tall woman with a steel-grey bun and a hawkish nose---is moving through the crowd, heading for the satyr guardsman.

The mayor sighs and nods. "Yes, I'm glad nobody's been seriously hurt... listen. I must ask something of you I wish I had no need to, but I have no choice... I need a group to take the worldship, go to the other worlds, get help. I can't have any of the senior guards and mages do it, because we need them here. Aristotle, you will need to take people who will be able to help you on this mission---others who can fight, mages. I know it's a lot to ask, and I wouldn't if I didn't have to." The strain is clear in her eyes and voice.

Chi and Quin may feel a little... tingling, the feeling you get when you think you heard your name spoken but aren't sure you didn't imagine it.

[Outside Moonport]
The cloaked and bandaged figure strides forward, ringed with twitching and chittering creatures. A senior mage stands in the breach in the wall and casts a complex spell, rubble and earth rising up in human shapes. The golems grind toward the enemy sorcerer, sliding over the earth with surprising speed for their heft.

"Golems, really? Oh, that'd be cute if---'scuse me, Driftaga!" He spreads his arms, a wave of violet energy bubbling out around him. The golems plow right into it and lose purchase on the ground, lifting a few feet into the air.
"Sorry, where was I... oh yes. It'd be cute if it weren't so pathetic. As it is, well... Graviga! Arms snapping down, he sends out another wave of dark violet. The golems don't just drop, but slam into the ground, half-buried and broken. "Boys, you know what to do." He keeps strolling onward, some of his pack of Heartless starting to tear at the golems.

"All part of umm the act. Yes, meant for that to happen.. right!" Quin cleared her throat with mild embarrassment just realizing she contradicted what she had said only a few moments ago.

There was a brief awkward pause before Quin institutionally turned her head in the direction on some satyr talking to a woman when Quin noticed her old buddy Nerissa. "Pardon me a moment, I'll be right back!" Quin said in a bit of a singing tune. Casting float on herself again walking in the air on top of the collected crowd's heads as if they were nothing.

"Neir! Your heart wasn't ripped from your chest and consumed! Also this is probably a scenario you should of mentioned to me! (Would of appreciated knowing the existence heart eating abominations y'know?) But that matters not for you live!" Despite how this may sound to some the tone in Quin's voice was actually that of relief and excitement. Nerissa was one of the only people Quin was able to make any relationship with.
