So my friend if gonna be DMing his first campaign soon and he told us to make characters without Backgrounds or Backgrounds Proficiencies because he will give us those. The party, including me is fine with that because we enjoy suprise and role play. So I was thinking about the character I want to make and I realise I have done all the typical characters. I have a LE wizard who spams utility spells to get around situations, I have a CG Half-Orc Barbarian who just goes rage mode and wrecks fools, I have a Bard/Rogue Skill Monkey who uses stealth and persuasion and I'm not really wanting to do ranger or paladin because literally everyone I play with has done that at least once. So, I thought maybe I would run a more unique specialist character who does some crazy stuff with feats or whatever. So if you have any cool ideas for "different" characters suggest them plz. No idea is to stupid just don't be mundane. PS Healer is wayyyyy out of the question.

If I didn't know my background, I'd make a Wild Sorcerer whose powers awaken literally days before the adventure; shocking me out of whatever completely mundane life my background gave me. Constantly confused, no idea what is going on really. No idea how I do what I do, little 'adventurer common sense' like knowing about monsters or worrying about traps.

Focus on simple spells but veer away from blasting (where I will regret not being dragon sorcerer more)

Stick with a race that can be 'boring' too... V. human or Lightfoot Halfling probably.

If you've played every type of adventurer, instead play a normal person unexpectedly thrust into adventure

If you already did this. Think, what's your favourite roll of those. Is it the barbarian, you can go for fighter or monk. The wizard? that sounds perfect for a full spellcaster, sorcerer?
There isn't another real skillmonkey.

Druid is a thing you never played, and it's something else than a wizard. Especially a moon druid is just for half a full caster.

I once rolled my whole character random, maybe a funny thing to do? Random class, random race, random alignment, random ability scores, and spells and equipment non-random.

I've done something like this before. Assuming you're using the races from EE as well, roll 2d12 for race and class, whatever dice is appropriate to choose a subclass, and a d9 for alignment.

I also think the wild magic idea is good. Someone who is literally being forced into adventuring, if not against their will, than rather reluctantly.

It is even more fun if you are starting at higher levels so you 'awaken' with stronger magic.

I've done it once before, in a 3.5 core only game; I rolled weird stats and had to find a place for 3 very low and 3 very high scores (I think my array was 18/16/16/6/5/3) and decided on a sorcerer who was just a farmer, got kicked in the head by a mule, and woke up with brain damage and 9th level casting.

Mulenkainen's Lucubration.

As to the OP, how about a tavern brawler rogue who's only talent in life seems to be hurting people with otherwise innocuous objects? Rather than having any actual skills or dungeoneering ability he's just foul-tempered and murderous. He'll kill you a hundred different ways with the contents of a bookshelf, but can't pick locks to save his life.

A barbarian/warlock with pact of the blade? Just sit back, relax, and crush your enemies with a magic great axe and true strike during a rage

Also armor of agathys once its high enough is fun. Cold damage and temp hit points abound

Sounds like you should mix race and class up a little, do something a little sub-optimal.

Rock Gnome cleric, knowledge devotion? Guy knows more stories about Garl Glittergold than you can fit into a shelf of books. Not too much practical knowledge of the world but he burns one of his Channel Divinity slots and *poof* insta-expert. And then he goes back to being a little guy with his nose stuck in a book.
