I'm curious as to the specifics of this

In the players handbook(p.154) bard is said to cost 4x the normal amount and weigh twice as much.

Now, the cost was surprising but acceptable as a strange job kind of thing.

However the weight is what throws me off.

Was barding made with large mountable animals, such as horses, primarily in mind?

Why would my medium sized boar/Panther/snake
Or tiny sized mouse/gerbil/rat have 4x weight armor?

Does a small sized animal, like a bird, have 4x the armor weight as a halfling?

Halp!

It's actually even more funny when you consider that a halfling/gnome's heavy armour weighs the same as a goliath's heavy armour. Pretty sure this is one of those cases where DM fiat is involved.

No DM fiat! The Halfling must be in plate that weighs 50% more than he does! The tiny snake familiar in scale mail barding must carry around 160lbs worth of armor! The rules demand it be so!

Yeah, it doesn't really make a ton of sense.

I'd probably rule that weight is twice for large
normal for medium
1/2 for small
1/4 for tiny (or less.. if it's super tiny).

probably 4x for huge (or more depending on creature)

I'd probably rule cost as

1/2 tiny
normal small
double for medium animals
4x for larger

then vary for larger.
