View Full Version : D&D 3.x Class Good Aligned Paladin (Name Pending?) [3.5 Base Class]

G Paladin (Placeholder name)

Alignment: Any good
Hit Die: d10
Skill Points: 4 + Intelligence Modifier
Class Skills: Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (the planes) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), and Use Magic Device (Cha).

G paladins are more dedicated to the advancement of good through influence than intense conviction. This means that their abilities in combat lack the conviction of the more dedicated paladins, but they retain their prowess and are more knowledgeable. The benefits of this knowledge allow them to combat evil by different means than other paladins. However, they do lose some of the abilities fueled by the conviction of other paladins such as the ability to smite.

Class Features

All the following are class features of a g paladin.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

G Paladins are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields).

Aura of Good (Ex)

The power of a g paladinís aura of good (see the detect good spell) is equal to his g paladin level.

Detect Evil (Sp)

At will, a g paladin can use detect evil, as the spell.

Scour Evil (Su)

Once per day, a g paladin may project energy in a 15 foot cone that is harmful to evil. Creatures and objects with an evil alignment within the area are dealt 1d6 damage per class level of the g paladin or 1d8 damage per class level of the g paladin if they are also undead. Creatures potentially affected by this ability and objects with a means of locomotion are permitted a reflex save to halve the damage they would take from this ability. Evil aligned incorporeal undead struck by this ability do not benefit from their incorporeal miss chance and must also make a will save or be slowed (as the spell) for 1 minute. The DC for both saves is 10 + 1/2 g paladin level + Charisma Modifier.

At 4th level, and at every three levels thereafter, the g paladin may scour evil one additional time per day.

Pure Spirit (Su)

At 2nd level, a g paladin's force of personality guards his intentions. He gains a bonus equal to his Charisma bonus (if any) on all will saving throws.

Aura of Purity (Su)

At 3rd level, evil aligned enemies within 10 feet of the g paladin find their defenses fail them more frequently. Such enemies take a -1 penalty on saving throws and to AC. This penalty increases by 1 at 8th level and every 5 levels thereafter.

At 4th level, a g paladin gains the ability to cast a small number of divine spells, which are drawn from the g paladin spell list. A g paladin must choose and prepare his spells in advance.

To prepare or cast a spell, a g paladin must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a g paladinís spell is 10 + the spell level + the g paladinís Charisma modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a g paladin can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on the table above. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Charisma score. When the table above indicates that the g paladin gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level, he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Charisma score for that spell level.

A g paladin prepares and casts spells the way a cleric does, though he cannot lose a prepared spell to spontaneously cast a cure spell in its place. A g paladin may prepare and cast any spell on the paladin spell list, provided that he can cast spells of that level, but he must choose which spells to prepare during his daily meditation.

Through 3rd level, a g paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, his caster level is equal to his g paladin level (unlike most paladins who receive only half their paladin level).

Consecrated Elemental (Sp)

At 5th level, a g paladin magically seeks out a willing elemental and consecrates it. He must choose a small elemental of one of the 4 basic types (air, earth, fire, or water). Once this choice is made, it is irreversible and that elemental is bound to him. The g paladin permanently gains the ability to speak the corresponding elemental language to the elemental he chose (auran for air, terran for earth, ignan for fire, or aquan for water). The elemental's alignment changes to match the alignment of the g paladin upon completion of the consecration. It permanently becomes native to a celestial realm rather than the elemental ones. A consecrated fire elemental gains the ability to suppress it's ability to produce flames (making it incapable of dealing fire damage and causing it to appear as a vaguely humanoid shape composed of metallic colored ash, though this does not compromise its durability) and gains the ability to move through water without harm. In general, the appearance of a consecrated elemental is more celestial. Examples include a fire elemental appearing to be made of golden colored flames, an air elemental producing a faint golden glow, a water elemental composed of sparkling clean water, and an earth elemental that is much more sculpted and less rugged than normal.

Once per day, as a full-round action, a g paladin may magically call his elemental from the celestial realms in which it resides. This ability is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to one-third the g paladinís level. The elemental immediately appears adjacent to the g paladin and remains for 2 hours per g paladin level; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action.

Each time the elemental is called, it appears in full health, regardless of any damage it may have taken previously. The elemental also appears wearing or carrying any gear it had when it was last dismissed. Calling the elemental is a conjuration (calling) effect.

Should the elemental die, it immediately disappears, leaving behind any equipment it was carrying. The g paladin may not summon it for thirty days or until he gains a g paladin level, whichever comes first, even if the elemental is somehow returned from the dead. During this thirty-day period, the g paladin takes a -1 penalty on attack and weapon damage rolls.

G Paladin Spell List

G paladins choose their spells from the following list:

1st Level
bless, bless water, bless weapon, create water, cure light wounds, detect poison, detect undead, divine favor, endure elements, lesser restoration, magic weapon, protection from evil, read magic, resistance, sanctuary, virtue.

2nd Level
bear's endurance, bull's strength, consecrate, delay poison, eagle's splendor, owl's wisdom, remove paralysis, resist energy, shield other.

3rd Level
cure moderate wounds, daylight, dispel magic, greater magic weapon, heal elemental (as the heal spell but only affects elementals), magic circle against evil, magic vestment, prayer, remove blindness/deafness, remove curse, water breathing.

4th Level
air walk, break enchantment, cure serious wounds, death ward, dispel evil, freedom of movement, holy sword, neutralize poison, restoration.

Ex-G Paladins

A g paladin who ceases to be of good alignment loses all g paladin spells and abilities (including the service of the consecrated elemental, but not weapon, armor, and shield proficiencies). He may not progress any farther in levels as a g paladin. He regains his abilities and advancement potential if he atones for his violations (see the atonement spell description), as appropriate.

The G Paladinís Consecrated Elemental

A consecrated elemental is superior to a normal member of its kind and has special powers, as described below. The g paladin chooses a type of elemental as mentioned above.

LevelBonus HDNatural Armor Adj.Ability Adj.Special
5th-7th+2+1+2Empathic link, improved evasion, share spells, share saving throws, anchored
8th-10th+6+2+4Adjust size, consecrated
11th-14th+10+3+6Command elementals of its kind
15th-20th+14+4+8Spell resistance

Consecrated Elemental Basics

Use the base statistics for an elemental of the mountís kind, but make changes to take into account the attributes and characteristics summarized on the table and described below.

Bonus HD
Extra eight-sided (d8) Hit Dice, each of which gains a Constitution modifier, as normal. Extra Hit Dice improve the elementalís base attack and base save bonuses. A consecrated elementalís base attack bonus is equal to that of a cleric of a level equal to its HD. The elemental has either a good Fortitude Save [earth and water elementals] or Reflex save [air and fire elementals] (treat it as a character whose level equals the elementalís HD). The elemental gains additional skill points or feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monsterís Hit Dice. The elemental may increase in size with additional HD.

Natural Armor Adj.
The number on the table is an improvement to the elementalís existing natural armor bonus.

Ability Adj.
Add this figure to the elementalís Strength, Constitution, and Intelligence scores.

Empathic Link (Su)
The g paladin has an empathic link with his elemental out to a distance of up to 1 mile. The g paladin cannot see through the elementalís eyes, but they can communicate empathically.

Note that elementals tend to see the world differently, so misunderstandings are always possible.

Because of this empathic link, the g paladin has the same connection to an item or place that his elemental does, just as with a wizard and his familiar.

Improved Evasion (Ex)
When subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, a consecrated elemental takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw and half damage if the saving throw fails.

Share Spells
At the g paladinís option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his elemental.

The elemental must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the elemental if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the elemental again even if it returns to the g paladin before the duration expires. Additionally, the g paladin may cast a spell with a target of "You" on his elemental (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself. A g paladin and his elemental can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the elementalís type (elemental). Furthermore, spells that affect weapons can be instead applied to the elemental's natural attacks.

Share Saving Throws

For each of its saving throws, the elemental uses its own base save bonus or the g paladinís, whichever is higher. The elemental applies its own ability modifiers to saves, and it shares only the bonus to will saves from the g paladin's pure spirit ability.

A consecrated elemental is not treated as a summoned creature when it would be beneficial to the elemental.

Consecrated (Su)

The consecrated elemental gains a +2 sacred bonus on attack rolls, saving throws, and AC. It also constantly radiates the effects of a consecrate spell with a caster level equal to the g paladin's class level.

Command (Sp)

Once per day per two g paladin levels of the consecrated elemental's benefactor, the elemental can use this ability to command other any elemental of approximately the same kind as itself (meaning that it has the same subtype and type), as long as the target elemental has fewer Hit Dice than the elemental. This ability functions like the command spell. If the check fails, the ability does not work that time, but it still counts against the elementalís daily uses. Each target may attempt a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 g paladinís level + g paladinís Cha modifier) to negate the effect.

Adjust Size (Su)

A consecrated elemental can adjust it's size as needed to as small as small size and as large as it's normal size as a swift action. It retains it's normal statistics, but it's size modifiers change accordingly and it's special attacks may be adjusted as well.

Spell Resistance (Ex)

A consecrated elementalís spell resistance equals the g paladin's level + 10. To affect the elemental with a spell, a spellcaster must get a result on a caster level check (1d20 + caster level) that equals or exceeds the elementalís spell resistance.

I already used the name paladin of benevolence. Can't think of another one off hand. Also, unsure if a capstone is needed. Unsure of the tier/if too powerful or too weak as well (though I'm almost certain it's stronger than a normal paladin). But here it is for now.

Added the anchored ability because of how important the elemental is to this class. It's about as strong as the druid's animal companion (perhaps stronger).
