So, I'd like to homebrew a monster who is the manifestation of Want (or greed).

I already have one based on Ignorance (thanks to Thunt's "Goblins" webcomic"), which basically made me immediately think of the pairing of it and Want from "A Christmas Carol".

I'm not particularly concerned with ability scores at the moment. I'm more interested in what you would think its strengths and weaknesses would be.

What game system/edition?

They have a want monster. It is called a dragon. Just have them horde whatever they "want".

I always forget this part. D&D 3.5

I'm looking for something less straightforward here. This is meant to be a manifestation of the concept.

Ethereal Filcher (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/etherealFilcher.htm). It's an invisible, ethereal creature that suddenly appears, tries to steal/pickpocket from someone, and then immediately disappear.

A giant, sentient bag of holding/portable hole with telekinetic Sleight of Hand/grapple powers, and Swallow Whole (Ex)? Brain/memory extraction powers are optional, Spit (Ex) powers to expel previously-captured monsters are not.

Sounds like a Bag of Devouring (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/cursedItems.htm#bagofDevouring) with some sort of telekinesis. I would probably save that for gluttony, though, if we are going with the seven sins.

Perhaps a retriever demon or an inevitable? Both operate on the principle of a specific task they seek to complete above all other things. What could illustrate "want" better?

Alternatively, consider a succubus or a psion with powers like antipathy that manipulate what someone else desires.

Personally I'd borrow from the greed character in full metal alchemist. Have him be intimately aware of what others want, and use that information to get as much as he can out of everyone he encounters, not even necessarily hostile, he could prove to be an ally to the party.

Sounds like Settozai (http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Settozai)and/or Yokubo (http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Yokubo)from L5R.
They are found in "Secrets of the Mantis" and "Secrets of the Crane", respectively. Basically, any time creatures give in to any form of greed or desire for material wealth the monster gets stronger.
