Sorry if this has been posted before, I can't find the search feature here.

When Durkon cast Greater Dispel Magic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0429.html) on Xykon/The Dragon shouldn't it of dispelled his Overland Flight buff? He says he cast it earlier that morning (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0442.html).

I'm not exactly d&d savvy so if someone could clear this up I would appreciate it.

I was thinking something along the lines of not realising the rules until a certain time.

But now that Xykon's already in the castle it doesn't really seem like that would have any effect on him.

E: Found the search thingy after opening my eyes. >.<"

Good point.
However, when dispelling multiple spells, there is a separate dispel check for each. Durkon might not have rolled high enough on the dispel check vs. the Overland Flight spell.

I see, that makes perfect sense now.

Thanks :)

Presumably Durkon used area dispel, which dispels multiple targets but only one spell per target.

In fact, since Durkon couldn't see Xykon, he had to use the Area of Effect version of Greater Dispel Magic (also to affect multiple targets, you must use the Area of Effect version as well - so there's another reason). He just got lucky that he got rid of the invisibility of both Xykon and Zombie Dragon. If he had gotten rid of the Overland Flight spell instead, Xykon would have stayed invisible, which probably would have been a bad thing. :smalltongue:

Depending on their level, some paladins might not even be able to hurt Xykon. As a lich, he has DR 15/magical and bludgeoning. Assuming most of the Paladins use swords, even a smite evil from a level ~6 will have trouble getting past that.

"Smite Evil" is a magical attack, right?

I believe it's just a special ability.

"Smite Evil (Su (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#supernaturalAbilities))"

"Supernatural Abilities (Su)

Supernatural abilities are magical..."

Yeah, but it doesn't count. A weapon must have at least +1 magical enhancement bonus or specifically say that it counts that as a magic weapon for the purposes of overcoming DR.
