Kinda hard extrpolating from next to no detail ;)

Hard to tell, I don't think it's any type of plate mail, my best guess is a shirt of chain mail.

Scale mail. It seems very Royish.

Anyway, best Xykon fanart ever. That's not an opinion either. It's a fact.

I imagined a larger sword, but besides that it's quite good. The Xykon art is spectacular. Granted, I shouldn't really be cruel, as I can't draw for beans.

I also imagined a cooler sword, as it is a +5 Starmetal sword. And when you do go to the coloring board, don't forget the green hilt. (Just kidding about that last sentence. Sorta. Really, don't forget the hilt.)

Anything bigger is, honestly, just not any more useful, it's already usable in two hands. And I designed it as close as I could to the look from the comic.

I'll make the blade cool-looking as it's the blade that makes it special.(Already colored the handle green)

Or maybe do away with the scale mail over his shirt and have it coming out from under his shirt, covering his upper legs, so it is implied he is wearing it under his shirt. It might make him look more like he does in the comic, but then again, it might make him look like he's wearing a skirt. So...I don't know.

One thing about Haley:

If one closely observes the comics in which her ponytail holder falls out, one notices that it is still circular, and bounces in the manner of a solid, spherelike object. You gave her a wrapping-type thing. It should be bead-like.

Also, with the length of the arrows she uses, we should be able to see green fletching over her right shoulder.

Yeah, I just feel like nitpicking. It's awesome in every way.

Uhmmm... I think that's probably because the comic is drawn in the most simplistic manner possible... I'm not doing that. :smalltongue:

Very decent work. I see you've taken a few slight liberties with the costumes, but no harm done there. I particularly like the detailing on the armour. (It's convenient that Rich doesn't generally give any visual cues for the arms and legs.)
I thought Roy's face looked a little odd at first, but on reflection it does suit his personality. Haley looks a tad stern... but I've no real beef.

I don't recommend distorting the eyeridge in Xykon's pic. A denuded skull still cloyed with traces of gaunt flesh and glowing red pinpricks seated in pits of twin darkness for eyes should look adequately malevolent.

Anything bigger is, honestly, just not any more useful, it's already usable in two hands. And I designed it as close as I could to the look from the comic.
The German Zweihänder, the canonical greatsword, could be 1.8 metres long. Scottish Claymores were roughly 1.4 metres. What you have there, my friend, is a longsword. And perfectly serviceable it is too. But advertisment for the trouser titan? I think not.

tensen01
2007-05-03, 08:27 AM
Well, quite honestly, a few liberties must be taken.

Xykons eyeridge kinda has to be distorted. Human eye sockets are, for the most part, circles, whereas Xykons quite clearly come to points near the outer top, thus nessecitating a distortion to the eyeridge. I'm trying to at least stay true to the basics of the look of the characters.

Indeed, but I will point out that the German Zweihänder had a fighting style used with it that is completely it's own(and from what I've seen, not the style Roy uses). Agreed on the Claymore. As to the sword I gave him, it's actually a hand & a half or broadsword of what I would classify an Oakeshott Type XVIII, but without the thrusting tip. The term "Longsword", also, is non-historical. ;)

And remember, it's Magical... doesn't hafta be huge... If it was huge he'd have trouble getting it off his back.

Oh, to everyone, Elan may take a bit longer than expected as I'm finding it difficult to find a good pose, but in the mean while, here's a quick & dirty sketch:

Xykon's eyeridges go all over the place depending on what facial expression he uses, which is an artistic liberty Rich has neccesarily taken given use of cartoon stick figures. Realistically, however, denuded skulls can't show facial expression. (Being true to the characters didn't stop you putting yellow scale mail over Roy. Which I've no objection to, though I kinda imagined a blue tabard atop chain mail.)

Indeed, but I will point out that the German Zweihänder had a fighting style used with it that is completely it's own(and from what I've seen, not the style Roy uses).
Nonetheless, this is what the term Greatsword emphatically refers to in the context of most fantasy continua. It's not as if a weapon specialised for lopping the heads off pikes and their owners would be used by any dungeon brawler in his right mind, or as if Dungeons and Dragons is renowned for it's verisimilitude. Katana duels with hit points, anyone?

Don't get me wrong, it's fine work, but I do so love to nitpick.

Ooh, yeah, Serp and I are in the kind of DnD group that could really provide some opportunities for interesting portraits...

Alfryd, no worries, I can tell it's all in good fun :D and artistic and mental images differ from person to person. I appreciate your nitpicking and the fact that you did it in a polite and helpful manner :) I was patterning Xykon eyes after his most common expression: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0446.html

Yeah, Elan doesn't look as jovial as I'd hoped, but it was just a quickie and his smile wasn't working. His finished will be jovial. And again, Bard or Dashing Swordsman?

Hmmm, actually, I'd totally forgotten about that Nale picture. Elan wasn't paterned after it at all.

Serpentine, I might be. The thing is, these were unsolicited for my own enjoyment and amusement, anything I do as a request will be considered a commision and I'm obligated to charge. For character portraits like that I do charge less than I would for illustrations for a company for a book, though. I'm very reasonable.

And as for doing it professionally... I hope to some day make it my day job... As it is I've done illustrations for one books so far, with a few more prospects on the horizon :)

Again, thanks for all the kind words.

I think you only need to do one thing to make Elan have that kiddish, happy face.

Don't have him raising one eyebrow. That's a playful, wry, devious, clever expression. Elan doesn't even know what "wry" means probably, so cleverness and such should be right out.

And, uhh...I always liked him better as a pure Bard. Costume-wise. His DS costume is so...uninspiring to me.

Quite fair enough. For potential future purposes, exactly how reasonable are you?
All I can suggest for Elan is maybe give him a slight "baby face", not quite so angular. Maybe with dimples?

Quite fair enough. For potential future purposes, exactly how reasonable are you?

I'd say about 15-20 bucks a picture depending on the detail and whether color or greyscale. A picture consisting of a single character.

Okay, Added Elan lineart, and at this point I need to give credit where credit is due and thank those people whos stock photos I've used so far for pose reference.

Roy: *syccas-stock http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/37213915/
Haley: ~anodyneheroine-stock http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/35604584/

Now, I point these out because with Elan I had NO HELP, I had to do it all myself and it was a pain! It made me appreciate just all the more those people who take the time to make stock photos. That's also why Elan isn't quite as good as the previous two. But I still hope you at least sort of dig him, even if I'm not terribly happy with him.

I *love* these drawings! Very well done.

As to Elan, I like how he is drawn. So energetic, so... eager. That's the word! Eager! At least to me, you managed to project that very Elanesque quality of being like a puppy who is always wanting to fawn, wanting to please and be all over you, managing to trip you at the same time.

And, of course, you can't stay mad at the puppy for long. Because it's a puppy!

I'm currently in the process, I just posted Belkar first because I'd already had most of the picture done, and figured I might as well.

I'm just having trouble picking colors for Elan.

I'm not sure if I'll do Miko honestly... I don't like her. If I do her it won't be before I do Xykon & Redcloak

Fantastic work. It'd be neat if, once you're mostly done with the original cast, you maybe did a group picture similar to the splash page after they beat Xykon the first time. Maybe not that exact pose, but you get the idea. The "We're OOTS!" sort of hanging out picture.

Are you going braided or non-braided beard?

Belkar = Wolverine... may not be too far off the mark :smallwink:

All of them are great, though not so sure about Haley. She looks a bit too cold. She may be calculating but she always had this feel of being somewhat bubbly.

Haha, yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I first saw the Belkar picture too. And Wolvie's supposed to be short as well.

I like Haley actually. The hard expression makes her look believable as a rough, tough adventurer, rather than a Barbie doll, which many portrayals of female characters turn out looking like.

I'm not too sure about Durkon however, somehow not getting the Durkon feeling from him. Perhaps he looks a bit too aggressive.

Still, fantastic work, tensen. I hope you change your mind about doing Miko, but I'd love to see the other characters as well, and can't wait for Thog :thog:.

tensen01
2007-05-06, 02:30 AM
Well... I might do Miko if I get inspired.

I was trying to go for Dour, not necessarily aggressive, but I figure he's staring doing a heathen hobgoblin. :)

Hey, anyone know if it's been stated why V doesn't have a staff? Just curious.

Deckmaster
2007-05-06, 07:11 AM
In the board game, he has a Seldom Used Quarterstaff, apparently. It's never been featured in the comic, because V is the type to rely entirely on his magic. Some speculate it's like his familiar, and he's been carrying it all along, and has just forgotten he has it.

Okay, I am axaggerating a bit. But he is awesome.

Attilargh
2007-05-06, 01:13 PM
Awesome work. (Wow, Durkon looks like Sean Connery, and I'm certain the others remind me of some other famous people as well.)

Xykon's collar looks - dare I say it? - a bit silly. Sure, it's a classic, but still. His eye sockets look a bit weird as well, as I'm not accustomed to seeing anything else than Two Pools Of Darkness, Lit Only By Eldritch Flames of Hatred. However, that's one nasty grin, there.

I'm going to add my virtual voice to the choir of those who wish to see your take on Miko. If that won't happen, might you be doing Hinjo or Shojo at some point?

kalirush
2007-05-06, 01:43 PM
Durkon looks great- I love that you put a Thor's hammer on his armor. Nice touch.

I don't like Miko either, by the way. I don't get why everyone's all into her. But I'm excited to see how you do Redcloak!

tensen01
2007-05-06, 02:47 PM
Wow, glad you're all digging the pictures :D

I'm debating whether or not to give V his/her Staff. I have a pose chosen for either or.

Attilargh, I did actually intend to make Xykons sockets all black, just didn't get around to it before I started on the others, and I don't like the collar either, it was just a quick sketch to see if I could draw him at all.

So, V is next, and I hope to have him/her later today for your viewing pleasure. Then on to Redcloak I think. It may be a little while before I get to anyone else after I finish V, though. I'm not sure how to portray redcloak, and I want Xykon to be wicked...

Damn... I may HAVE to do Miko then... Just to have someone simple to draw ;)

If you're doing Celia, do her in the dress.

And no "beauty marks" this time. 'tis the one complaint I have with Haley. If it's supposed to be a dimple, well, it still looks kinda weird.

tensen01
2007-05-06, 05:50 PM

It's funny. The only thing that puts me off about any of these drawings is the stick figure of Roy in the background of his color portrait. The coloured Durkon is very nice. Is it my imagination or is it a bit stretched on the width?

I have but one question, and it will probably cause you serious amounts of grief from others, but have you considered doing any Oots comic scenes?

I feel a bit cheesy criticising artwork as good as this, but . . . Haley's left ear looks rather too low on her head to me. Top of her ear should be in line with her eyes. Not that this minor niggle stopped me saving local copies of the whole portfolio. They're still excellent.
