Lacedon ghasts?

I've never understood why landbased ghouls have ghouls and ghasts, but waterbased ones only have lacedons. Lacedons can't have improved versions? Why?

There's no rule saying they don't exist, just like there's no rule saying that they do exist. It wouldn't be gamebreaking so go ahead and make one.

It's an easy enough application to make aquatic ghasts, and the description might refer to both monsters (since ghasts are like a sub-category of ghouls). It might also be because stench doesn't make as much sense in water.

Perhaps Stench is less potent when all the PCs are holding their breath.

Or one could take Ghasts and slap the Aquatic Template (Stormwrack) on them.
