Im not sure if RAW, casting calm emotions on someone affected by Hideous Laughter would suppress the Laughter. RAI I feel like it should, but is like to get some second opinions first.

Hideous laughter is not an Emotion effect, but a Compulsion. Calm emotions doesn't do anything about Compulsions. You just very calmly are laughing uncontrollably.

So Hideous Laughter doesn't actually tickle your funny bone? It just takes control of your motor functions and causes you to laugh?

Why do you think it's so hideous? There are brain injuries and diseases that can create the same effect.
Imagine how terrifying that would be, locked in a convulsing body you can not control while gasping, rasping sounds, your belly churning as you spasm in false jocularity.

This is in direct contradiction to parts of Hideous Laughter's crunch however. It says the spell DC is 4 less against races different than that of the caster because humor didn't translate well. This directly implies that there is actual funny business going on here.

At best, that means the compulsion is to find something funny. You are now calmly finding that so objectively funny that you are compelled to laugh uncontrollably at it.

This hurts my brains and makes very little in-world sense :D

It's a compulsion. Part of the compulsion is to "find this funny." If you're not disposed towards the kind of humor that is being invoked, the compulsion is easier to resist, giving you a +4 bonus to the save. However, it's still a compulsion.

Calm emotions snuffs emotional reaction; it doesn't say it negates compulsions. You are thus still compelled to find that funny and to have a specific reaction to it: uncontrollable hideous laughter. Even if you're quite calm about it.

Actually, it says 'type', and different races' brains are going to be wired differently, so it still fits more or less.
