View Full Version : Fantasy Title Chain Game

2015-07-29, 05:27 PM
This is a game I used to play with friends in school, only it was with movie or song titles. Basically, you get a title of a fantasy novel or story, then you choose a word in the title and give another title with the same word in it. You can't use the same word twice in a row (unless the previous title consists of only one word). Compound words may be broken up, plural forms may be made singular and vice versa. No prepositions can be used, words like and, of, or, or the. Basically, any word in the title that isn't capitalized. To make new moves easier, it would help if the word you were repeating was CAPITALIZED in your new title so players know which word they can't use.

Let me give an example of a few rounds. Say we started with this title;

Sword of Truth

You could use either 'sword' or 'truth'. Let's use sword and play;

SWORD of Shannara

Since 'sword' is capitalized that leaves us with 'Shannara'. So let's play;

Elfstones of SHANNARA

'Elfstones' is a compound word, so we can break it up and use either 'elf' or 'stones'. Also, we could change to the plural or singular forms, changing 'elf' to 'elves' or 'stones' to 'stone'.

That should be enough of an example. Also, it's easy to cheat at this game and look on Amazon or some other site, but it's better if you rely simply rely on memory. I'm sure most of us have read a lot of fantasy in our day. And if you want to make a brief comment about the novel or story you pick, that won't hurt anything. Just make sure it's not easily confused with the title. I'll start the official chain off with the first novel I read based on Dungeons & Dragons;

Saga of Old City

The SPEAR of Destiny Part One: Black Sun Reich

I know it's pretty gauche to respond to one's own post, but I didn't want the thread to disappear. Couldn't think of a fantasy title off hand. But I'd heard of the spear of destiny and assumed there must be a spear of destiny book. Checked amazon and there WAS a series about steampunk, occult Nazis. So just a reminder, the next answer should contain either 'destiny' or 'black' or 'sun' or 'reich'.

My. What an unusual title. Sounds almost like a catalog page instead of a fantasy novel.

I thought I had something on my shelve...there it is!

(Xihirli, it's fairly obvious you've just been making stuff up. If you think the game's unworthy, just don't play. Unless you post an actual work of fantasy, I think you should just be ignored)

(I had to cheat on this one, checked Amazon.)

EDIT: No, I'm sorry for being so rude. Just a silly game, didn't mean to make it personal.

The SWORD of Winter by Marta Randall

Good little gem of a book with a believable female protagonist.

WINTER's Heart, by Robert Jordan

(one of the Wheel of Time books)

2015-08-06, 10:02 PM

Tears of a DRAGON, by Bryan Davis (I had to deviate from the Pern and Anne McCaffrey series)

2015-08-06, 11:39 PM
Stone of TEARS

(Terry Goodkind. I actually loathe this series. My friend really likes it, but after the first four books I got tired of all the fan service rape and torture porn. I'm not a prude, but it really started to seem like that was more integral to the series than the plot required)

A Wizard of EARTHsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin, and although I might be pushing the boundary of the naming rules I just had to mention one of my all time favorites.

Edit: Compound words are okay! When all else fails, I go back and read the rules.

The Warlord WANTs Forever by Kresley Cole

I just inherited about 100 SciFi/Fantasy books but I noticed most have titles of about one usable word (Dune, The Hobbit, Shadowspawn, etc...)

@v Ah, yes... forgot that.

2015-08-09, 01:30 PM
(I'll let someone else add to the chain, I just wanted to remind players that you can break up compound words. So Shadowspawn could be a response to either shadow or spawn. And if a one word title is used the next player can reuse it to keep the chain going.)
