I'm currently playing a beguiler in an undead heavy campaign. Is song of the dead as good as it seems?

It turns any spell into a necromancy spell for a +1 metamagic cost. Any mind-affecting spell so modified can effect intelligent undead, but it has no effect on mindless undead or non-undead creatures. If you manage to get a Slaymate from Libris Mortis following you around, you can add that to your spells for no metamagic cost, but you still get the increased casting time for a spontaneous spell with metamagic. In any case, it depends entirely on your style of play whether or not it would be useful. Glitterdust still works on undead, and mindless undead are easily fooled by figment illusions.

I would just max out UMD and get a Wand of Command Undead, or just get an Eternal Wand (MIC) of that since anyone who can cast arcane spells can use any eternal wand, no matter what spell it contains. Another alternative would be to get a custom Runestaff (MIC) with Command Undead on it, and UMD it each day when you attune to it to cast the spells it contains as though they were on your class spell list.
