This is something that occured to me a while back, again when Roy and Xykon were talking on the dragon, and now again while reading the 448 discussion thread...

Why can't Xykon win?

From a storyline perspective, everyone's all "It's game over, man! Xykon's got the gate." But I'm reminded of Final Fantasy Six, in particular. Kefka had the goddess statues. Kefka became practically a diety. Kefka reshaped the world in his own power. The party was scattered, spread to the corners of the planet... And they all got back together and beat him in the end.

So, lets let Xykon get the gate. Lets let Xykon TAKE OVER THE WORLD. Lets put the Order of the Stick back on the offensive. A 20th level Lich is a clear and visable threat. A 20th level Lich who has harnessed the power of a god-killing abomination? Well, that's just totally awesome.

If the order survives this fight, we've now got them on the OFFENSIVE for what may very well be the rest of the strip.

Of course, even with the power of the Snarl, it might take Xykon a long time to get anything done. The Order could have plenty of adventures, even run into him many times, before the final confrontation.

It worked for Kefka. Why not Xykon?

Because Rich seems to try and be original.

Because Rich seems to try and be original.

So he'd do it in a new and original way. FF6 wasn't the first story with "bad guy wins" halfway through and then the second part being "remove even stronger bad guy!"

Then, of course, a lot of stories start with the bad guy having ALREADY won (Star wars, Chrono Trigger), but there's only so much you can do with the rules of a hero quest. Having Xykon win here and get stopped later wouldn't be any less original than having the heroes stop him at the last minute.
