Pathfinder or 3.5 doesn't matter too much, but I wonder if there's a resource out there that provides reasonable, balanced prices for purchased animals/magical beasts, and/or rules for rearing them.

Unfortunately, prices for purchasing animals are all over the place and I cannot find a consistent pattern, especially concerning magical beasts. The rules for rearing animals are easily found under the Handle Animal skill description however.

From the 3.5 SRD;

Horse, Light: 75gp
Horse, Heavy: 200gp
Warhorse, Light: 150gp
Warhorse, Heavy: 400gp
Pony: 30gp
Warpony: 100gp

Spider Eater (Magical Beast, 4HD CR 5): 2,000gp (Egg), 3,000gp(Young), 3,000gp charge to have trained on your behalf
Griffin (Magical Beast, 7HD CR 4): 3,500gp (Egg), 7,000gp (Young), 1,500gp charge to have trained on your behalf
Pegasus (Magical Beast, 4HD, CR 3) 2,00gp (Egg), 3,000gp (Young), 1,000gp charge to have trained on your behalf
Giant Owl (Magical Beast, 4HD, CR 3) 2,500gp (Egg), 4,000gp (Young), 1,000gp charge to have trained on your behalf
Hippogriff (Magical Beast, 3HD, CR 2) 2,000gp (Egg), 3,000gp (Young), 1,000gp charge to have trained

There may be a few others I missed.

warbeast template from mm2, but i wouldn't call it good or balanced.

The Handle Animal Guide (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1300) has some listings on training/rearing animals.

I've found that you have to at least quadruple the cost given by the template to get an even remotely sensible price - maybe I'll use the CR of the creature for pricing instead, something like CR*1500 for magical beasts or CR*1000 for animals might be appropriate.
