I chose to start one campaign by sending the following out to the players:

How this game starts depends on how the group answers the following 5 questions. The whole group must agree on the answers, instead of them being individual:

At the start of the first adventure, your group is hiding from something.
1. What are you hiding from?
2. Why are you hiding from it?
3. Where are you hiding?
4. How are you hiding?
5. Who else is hiding with you?

Think about possible answers for these. Hopefully you can all come to a consensus. Try not to constrain yourselves in your thinking: for example, your first instinct may be to think you are hiding from sort of monster, but you could also be hiding from a storm, an organization, your fans, your responsibilities, etc.

38. In Media Res (it's a city in one of my campaigns).

71. In media res

Technically, it's in medias res; res is accusative plural and media has to agree with it.

Ah, Latin conjugation debates. This brings me back to high school, when I was entering certamens and making unnecessarily lascivious references to Catullus 16 in the middle of class, like a facetious little bastard.

I looked it up to be sure, and it is technically in medias res (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InMediasRes). If you wanted some of that vintage, authentical Latin, it'd look like this: INMEDIASRES, because they had no lower case or spaces between words.

196. At a card game, where one of the PCs lied about not having a quest they needed to go on.
197. In a treehouse, while playing cards.

FACK! I gotta go edit that now.

Update: I fixed that nonsense.

Nor did they have more than one S to use in any given sentence?

It's not a sentence in Latin, it lacks a verb; it's a just clause and/or phrase.

148. Waking up in a shipping crate, mid delivery.

This actually happened in one campaign start. One of the players, a security guard for a secret government warehouse, wanted to do something silly for his introduction. Another player was a DC-3 pilot. So I arranged it where in mid flight during a cargo delivery, the pilot heard something thump in his cargo. He has the copilot hold the controls while he checks it out. Opens the crate that made the noise and the guard immediately bolts upright.

"No sir I was not sleeping on the job again, sir!"

Hilarity ensues.

Nice thread!

Things I can add:

One was an oasis in the desert that's nearly run dry, with 5 thirsty party members and enough water for three.

Another was in a major city, the players buying their gear, right before the sudden invasion of their neighbors.

One game in Middle Earth started in the Mines of Moria, with the players scattered and hearing a scream rip through the quiet.

One favorite was at the back of an army, running the other way with the players being deserters from an army on a suicide march.

302: Lying down on an altar, readying your casting of regenerate to use on your own heart's former location in the brief window of time between your fellow cultistpriest removing it and you dying as a result; the leader needed a fresh heart for a ritual and payed you handsomely for it, but your "friend" waited until you'd already volunteered before warning you that raise dead doesn't restore missing organs on its own and he's too low level to cast resurrection. Also, that knife hurts really bad; maybe you shouldn't have refused anesthetic after all. Wait, is that knife dull?
303: Cutting out your friend's heart for a ritual, and realizing that you forgot to sharpen the knife. He refused anesthetic, because he wanted to make sure he could cast regenerate on himself in time, and wouldn't be able to do that while unconscious; you'd actually meant local anesthetic, but he didn't seem to get that.
304: Watching one of your cult's foolish members cutting the heart out of another, and laughing in your head because they don't know that the ritual you intend to perform has the side-effect of preventing raise dead from working... Well, unless the "donor" is another of the three people mentioned in the Prophecy, but that couldn't be the case; I mean, you're part of the Prophecy, but the guy's a bumbling idiot who only knows about this cult at all because he knew your second-in-command (who is currently holding a rather dull knife.)

You know, that's a great idea. If I ever kidnap someone I'm going to prepare by prankcalling the cops from my house one too many times. When they let me go after a night in the lockup I kidnap some teenage girl (they make the best slasher victims, everyone knows that), take their cellphone, tie them up a bit too loosely and leave a my house phone standing in plain sight. I'm going to enjoy listening to their entire conversation with the cops from behind the curtains, holding my knife.

Note: yes, those would be DM'ing plans, why do you ask? I mean, who in the real world still has a land line anyway?

305. In a small crampy boat travelling down slow and deadly silent waters of river Styx. Strangely (or maybe not so strangely...), you do not remember the point of your destination, nor where you are coming from, nor the reasons for the cruise itself. And the hunched figure in a faded greyish robe guiding the boat doesn't look trustworthy enough to be asked such questions. Meanwhile, you are going past bountiful and hospitable banks of Abyss. Why, maybe you are here on vacation? Looks like a nice place to go sightseeing! And perhaps the local cousine has some delicious dishes?:smallwink:
