Exalted Arcanist Question

Hello all,

Clarification question for all of you.

The book reads "Sanctified Spells: A 5th level exalted arcanist can use sanctified spells as though they were among her spells known. " P. 62 (boED)

Now I read this as I get access to those spells as bonus spells known once I hit 5th level in the prestige class. Am I missing something? Or is my interpretation correct?

Yep, your interpretation is correct. Just to be clear: they're bonus spells known, not bonus spells/day.

Your interpretation is probably what was intended when they wrote the class, however by RAW you get them as spells known but are unable to cast them. This is due to the fact that sanctified spells need to be prepared in a spell slot to be able to cast and the PrC doesn't overwrite this. If you plan to actually use it in a game make sure to run it by your Dm first just to be sure but otherwise this is just another example of poor writing/editing by WotC.

Gotta disagree with you there. First off, it doesn't add them to your spells known, it just lets you cast them as if they were among your spells known. (It's a subtle difference, but it means you can't do stuff like swap them out for different spells when you level up or use them to power a dragonblood sorcerer substitution level.) Second, it clearly constitutes an exception to the general rule that spontaneous casters can't cast sanctified spells, and exceptions have the highest priority when rules conflict with each other.

(It's a subtle difference, but it means you can't do stuff like swap them out for different spells when you level up or use them to power a dragonblood sorcerer substitution level.) But how does it clearly state that exception? All it says is treat them as if they were on the sorcerers spell known list (forgot about the spell swapping thing, so you are right there) without any tag line to override the specifically stated rule that spontaneous casters cannot make use of the spells. It makes sense that they can, but it doesn't actually state otherwise.

"can use" seems like a pretty clear example of an exception to "can't use".

Indeed, they "can use" the sanctified spells, which means they can cast them (because otherwise you can't use them.)

At best you could argue that they don't gain the ability to use them until 5th level, when they get the "can use" ability. Even if you read it that way though, there are non-sanctified spells on the exalted spell list they can take instead - and indeed, you should be taking those (if not the normal spells from your entry class), since at 5th-level you get all the sanctified spells for free anyway.

Note that you can actually add some of them as spells known through the Exalted Spell List feature. (Generally, you shouldn't, but you can.)
