View Full Version : Optimization Would you compete?

I've had an idea bouncing around in my head for some time now and I'm curious if anyone would be interested in making it happen. It would be a contest, inspired by Junkyard Wars and Zinc Saucier.

The goal is to build an ECL 15 character and then enter and run that character through an arena style combat tournament against other entrants. "oh that's boring, it going to be nothing but Mailmen and Uberchargers everytime," you're probably thinking. But here's the kicker, every round that you win, you have to make a new character for the next round. Without ANY of the build elements you or your opponent's used in previous rounds. You cannot repeat any templates, races, classes, or feats for the duration of the contest. Play a silver-brow metamagic specialist with heighten, empower, maximize, and twin spell (+ a few) as your feats against a Desert half-orc barbarian/frenzied berzerker with the standard power attack (+ a few)? That means desert half orcs, silverbrow humans, sorcerers, barbarians, frenzied berserkers, all the metamagics, as well as power attack (+ a few) are no longer available for you to use in the next round if you win. The level of play would get less and less optimized as the game went on.

So, would you play (or maybe even DM) something like this?

Sounds like an absolute nightmare to try to enforce that rules system.

It would take some work I'll admit. This originally started off as an idea for a one shot for my players over spring break. With only about 5 or 6 players it wouldn't be too hard to keep track of. Trying to to this in a PbP game would be kinda rough.

If I enter Punpun in the first round, or any other character who uses a similar trick to basically learn every ability ever printed, can I make it so that nothing is legal by round 2?

This is an example of someone doing something similar a while ago (minus the ban every round). Very well done and neatly structured.
