This is the OOC for Aleris Beginnings: Taming the Westerlands.

I will repost(copy paste over) setting info here and as it comes up in this post and the next one.

For now, all players who have a sheet can begin discussing and finalizing their character concepts, then sheets.

We will also open discussion for the one special item or abiltiy granted by DM.

Obviously @Ramsus and I have been discussing one in depth on the other thread, so there is already a template for scale. If you have something in mind for your character, feel free to make a suggestion - though I reserve the right to final details.

Thanks guys, and I'm excited to get started!

Megatropolis of Aleris (setting basics)

Aleris is a massive environment which provides many things to do for the eager PC. There are dangerous areas and people within the walls here, which means adventure is always close at hand.

Warring factions of houses, guilds, thieves, and assasins, warriors, and mages all claim territory. They work with/for/against anybody as long as it brings the leaders more power and or wealth. In the case of churches, they fight for the souls of many, and occasionally work against other religious institutes or organizations so that the weak may see their true path.

The Aleris is under no authority but its own, and has in place a unique form of demacracy. There are 11 major districts, each is responsible for electing its own Earl who serves for life, until retiring, or removed by 7 other Earls standing against him/her(which is rare indeed).

The Earls have the final say for all votes on a city-wide level. Under the Earl is around 20-30 Dukes(per district), each of whom is elected by the people for a 10 year term. They have more local authority, and inform the Earl of the will of the people. They occasionally act as judges for special cases should the local court be unable to handle a matter appropriatly. The Earls constitue a grand jury should a Duke's ruling be appropriatly appealed.

The Dukes are notorious influence pedlers, and use their authority and sway to influence local and citywide powers and/or business policies. Most Dukes are heads or figureheads of guilds(merchants, mages, or farmer's guilds for example), houses(usually by family name), or other major organizations(trade association-smithys, neighborhoods, or societies of collected interest).

This structure has lead to major power struggles within the city itself, but its defences are quite good. The Earls always make sure that the guard is well kept for and not only adequatly equipped, but able to handle full-scale invasions as well as foreign missions to preserve its own interests.

The guard has no one particular strategy that it is known for, rather it is up to the commanders to requisition the type of soldiers it needs to fufill a mission or defence post. Clerics of some dieties work their way up the ladder through keeping the soldiers healthy, and others by being battle ready. Others maintain equipment and provide the soldier/guards with the piece of mind that they need to keep a watchful eye on the city.

Mages of course are generally a bit harder to find in the rank-and-file membership, but are highly useful for scrying unlawful movements, reconnisance, stripping wrongdoers of their enchantments, or investigating arcane mysteries.

The laws of Aleris are simple, yet widely open to interpretation. Do not steal. Do not kill without authority. Businesses are taxed. Slavery is legal with certain races, and in certain districts - but slaves have some rights and protections. Guards can arrest and detain for only 24 hours without trial by judge for minor grievances.

Other than that, the judges themselves(given authority by the First Five Guard and the Duke of the area) have full authority to penalize according to precident and the severity of the crimes. This is often deferent based on the district where the offense was cited. If the wrongdoer is able to prove a bias, mistrial, unfair sentancing, or new information/evidence becomes available, he/she may be able to request a hearing with a different judge, or the cause may move to a higher court.

The First Five Guard is the highest echelon of the guard/militia for Aleris. It is so named because Aleris herself selected five initial bodyguards who took on the major role of protecting Aleris' early establishment, and Aleris herself. They formed garrisons with unique strengths and duties, but remained united by their mutual respect and love for Aleris herself... the city and the magic-user.

Though each district is supposed to be on equal footing, districts have highly different levels of influence which is based mostly on the wealth or stature of its residents.

Since Aleris is so a widespread, it includes some dwarven communities in the southern Rocksmith mountains, and indiginous elves in the western Helmswood. There is significant farmland in and around Aleris because of a farming technique which is based on the material "Alaerum" which is part of how the city got its name. The Alerum allows multiple levels of crops to grow in the same space by building "up" using the unique properties of alaerum.

Alaerum is a clear gas which can levitate other materials. If it is magically charged it can carry even more weight for longer periods of time. It was originally discovered by a mage who was traveling through some ruins near the cities first settlements. The mage came around the corner and his light spell disolved at an inopportune time. He carried on dispite the dark, and became lost. When he bumped into some free floating rocks in the dark he panicked and fired off a scorching ray of magical energy. His attack hit a large pocket of the gas which in turn raised enough material for him to see the sun again.

The material is not named for that unfortunate young mage, for he was eventually crushed under half of an island that he had lifted in this manner in a misguided attemt to display his skill, but for the mage who studied, and expanded the use of Alaerum - Aleris.

Aleris is highly touted, but herself was an introvert and modest. She never asked that the city be named after her, and suggested other names for the material which would eventually be known as Alaerum. She seems rather timeless in history, for before the discovery of the material she was unknown, and after the initial rise of Aleris she was gone without any fanfare. Some people are so devout to the ideals that she stood for that a few small places of worship have cropped up that hold her in the core of their beliefs. They have hope that maybe she moved on to work elsewhere, or somehow has survived unto this day.

First Five

The First Five are a current organization that was initially the standing guard for Aleris herself. It is made of five individuals who were charged with protecting the early establishment of Aleris and the mage herself.

Sturdin "The Stone Lion" - Dwarf, one of the first to reach out to elves, defense(and suprise) as offense.

The group that exsists today from Sturdin's teachings are called the Stone Lions.

A later leader of the Stone Lions, Denell Worchest has recently discovered a way to work Alearum into a weapon he has been working on(rune rifle).

Leonin Everglenn - Elf --> Alaestung, Reached pact with Sturdin, and was one of the original "Alaestung" near the end of his life. Very concerned with crafting enchantments into weaponry for Sturdin and his men to use.

The group that exsists today from Leonin's teachings are called the Glennsmen. They are generally lightly armored, but often hold such deadly weapons with emmence skill that no-one would ask about the armor anyway.

Pat Gonwick - Human rogue, did everything that no-one wanted to speak about. Particularily ruthless, dissapeared for months at a time working on... "foreign affairs".

The group that exsists today from Gonwick's teachings are called the Darkwicks. They tend to do their business behind closed doors. Many have considered that the Darkwicks and the Wing Valetta may have many agents in common.

Leanne Seekwater - Gnome, least is known of her(even less than Pat Gonwick), said to be of comparable skill in magic to Aleris herself. Several mage schools in the town are named after her. She worked hand in hand with Aleris to create defenses and magics using Alaerum. Her mages tended to work as individual agents when they were powerful enough, and as spam artiliery in groups when they were still learning about the humble magic missile.

The group that exsists today from Leanne's teachings are called the Seekers. They are always looking for new uses for Alaerum. They also play a grand part in the civil design and use of Alaerum to grow the Aleris economy. Seekers tend to sequester themselves to think and problem solve. When they venture forth from sequestration, they care little for social norms, but simply go right to where they intended to go and perform the duty or experiement that they had set out to do.

Jomie Veldt - The most visable of the First Five - a human battle commander who was known for generosity to his troops. He also had his troops trained in many different styles, many of which he was familiar himself. He had dragoons, archers, knights, thugs, spear and pikemen, sword and board, secret dagger, barbarians, scouts, hand to hand, twin moon style, and most famously he forged a new fighting style that uses Alerum:

The group that exsists today from Jomie's teachings are called the Brightguard. They make up the upper ranks of the Aleris' general guard(known as the Blue Banners), and remain the most visable of the First Five to this day.

Alaestung

Dwarven and Elven Alaerum touched - "Alaestung"

---this refers to 3.5/D20 type mechanics which do not necessarily apply here---

Usually only found in and around the metropolis of Aleris are the Aleastung. The usual assumption of dwarves and elves not getting along does not apply here. Families of dwarves and elves became obsessed with Alaerum, and formed a partnership to furthor its research and use.

Many say it has driven them from sanity, and indeed they have a shared aloofness and sense of reality that most consider off-putting.

These families have put their life's energy into crafting, molding, studying, and controlling Alaerum. They are naturally able to exert even stronger control over the material than all other races.

Alaestung Elves:
+2 Wisdom
-2 Cha
+1 Int
-1 Str

Low-light Vision, Alaerum Sense, +3 Craft(Alaerum)

You can feel the presence of Alaerum, and can tell more abuot it based on your character level + Wisdom mod check.

At character level 3, Alaestung elves begin to be able to control Alaerum using the power of their being. They apply their character level and wisdom mod to all checks involving magical uses of Alaerum.

Except as noted above, Alaestung Elves have all other traits of elves

Alaestung Dwarves
+2 Con
-2 Char
+1 Str
-1 Dex

Low-light Vision, Alaerum Sense, +3 Craft(Alaerum),

Except as noted above, Alaestung Dwarves have all other traights of dwarves

Alaerum Sense - You can feel the presence of Alaerum, and can tell more abuot it based on your character level + con mod check.

At character level 3, Alaestung elves begin to be able to control Alaerum using the power of their being. They apply their character level and Con mod to all checks involving crafting and blacksmithing uses of Alaerum.

Alaerum druids

These druids see nature as something that can be modernized. They embrace the idea of Alearum and how it changes landscapes. They craft magic items from it, and help shape the earth using their nature might. They are most commonly from the Aleastung dwarves and elves, though humans have also become attached to the material enough to pursue this path regularily.

They add several Alearum use spells to their list, and have the option to use Alearum based equipment. They can also craft an "animal companion" from Alearum and natural materials, which functions like any animal companion that they could normally acquire, and is called an Earumbeast. They lose many of their animal related abilities and replace them with Alaerum based abilities.

"Wild-Shape" becomes "Earumbeast-Shape" - The Alaerum druid gathers available Alaerum and changes shape into a beast like a druid normally would, except the beast is an Earumbeast of the same description. Any humanoid would recognize that it is an Aerumbeast if they had been exposed to it before or with a knowledge check of 10-general, local(Aleris), magical beasts, arcana, or spellcraft.

An Earumbeast is an animal shape that comes alive through the use of Alearum. It may consist of pieces of that animal that were retrieved from corpses, or natural materials that have been re-purposed to create the look of a particular animal.

Volcano Falls

Volcano Falls

Multiple levels of volcanoes, stacked using Alearum. Inside fire beings thrive and contribute to the heat of the mountains. When one overflows it goes down to the next volcano. The ash heat are kept at bay by an alearum sheild that feeds off of the heat.

The Derryion Volcanoes are a unique sight amongst the highly populated Aleris Metropolis. These volcanoes are massive pieces of earth that are constantly managed by the Alaestung dwarves and elves.

Seekwater's Recluse

Seekwater's Recluse

Leanne Seekwater was one of the First Five, a mage of great power. She famously helped Aleris in the design and implementation of using Alearum to shape the megatropolis.

One of the most unique landscapes they crafted was one for civic use. A graveyard.

Known to laypersons as "Deep Depths" this graveyard is layers and layers thick. Each layer is supported by earthen pillers and the power of alearum. The graveyard is build down into the ground many layers, and up into the sky for many layers as well. Everyone in Aleris has a plot, unless they've made their own outside arrangments.

Even beggars, thieves, and thugs have a resting place allotted for them in the Deep Depths.

The more wealthy and/or influencial you are, the higher in the Deeep Depths you wind up. The upper levels are considered far more prestigious, and are well kept.

The lower levels are in poor shape, and have very little space between the layers(5'6"). The main job of the maintainance staff here is to make sure the alearum is charged so that the layer doesn't collapse on itself.

Should the PCs stumble into some of the lower levels, they may well run into Arrayana, an alaestung elf who happens to want to get to the lowest levels of the Deep Depths.

The problem is that you need to be cleared by the staff to go down there. Arrayana is clear that the presence of alerum is much stronger the deeper you go, and not just the alearum that is part of the design.

Azure Maw

Azure Maw - Kettle Kaelic

Wing Valetta

The Wing Velatta is an organization within Aleris that are mostly messengers or delivery people among the citizenry. They are often combat able, but their work is most often done behind closed doors or in the dark.

A few examples of jobs that the Wing Velatta would do in Aleris:

---- "Deliver this sealed note to the second yellow oak tree in Villas Park. There should be a knot in the tree with a small box in it. Remove the note that should be there, and replace it with this one. Return the second note to me unopened."

---- "John Tyions in Babenal Square has been stealing clients from our friends. Send him a message from us by loosing the bolts overnight on his barber's chair so that when a customer sits, he makes his way to the ground."

The Wing Velatta has agents throughout Aleris, and there is no true and fast way to determine if someone works for them. They may not even know other agents who operate in the same areas as they do. An agent for Wing Velatta has no particular set of skills, but they seem to desire diversity in their operations, so any class of PC could potentially work for the Wing.

The Wing Velatta doesn't take only "good" or "evil" jobs, but takes jobs and matches them up with an agent who is in the right position, who has the right set of skills, to get the job done well. Many of the jobs are indeed "good" in nature, or at the very least aren't evil. Clean out this cellar of rats, etc...

Some jobs are of a grander scale however, and require that the agent's goals and the mission are at least similiarly aligned - or the pay is extreemly good. The Wing's leadership is mysterious to any outsiders. Insiders have very little idea of the scope of the Wing, and only know the agents that they give orders to, or take orders from.

To the DM we can use this organization to recruit PCs as a group, or more interestingly -as and individual - to do some mundane work that would lead them to some plot hooks. The individual who secretly works for the wing could be given additional rewards if the groups mission has a 'certain ending', or if another objective is met. Being a part of the Wing Velatta can also give them access to connections within the metropolis of Aleris. They could be introduced to priests of different churches, guilds of thieves, heroic captains, minor lords, Dukes of Aleris, etc... The connections they make on these seemingly minor missions may prove invaluable later. Or, they may lead to bad blood within certain circles.

Jazmith and House of Traia

Town: Jazmith
The house of Traia is in the crumbling city of Jazmith. Jazmith was once an extremely wealthy trade town until travel became nearly impossible after The Awakening.

Jazmith has a large population, and many districts within its large stone city walls. It's Western edge and castle are built into a mountain chain. The Eastern side is flanked by a calm sea port that leads to many rivers and the Deep Sea.

House of Traia
The House of Traia is a guild of ill-repute. At least that is the title they received after having been the first organization to unionize workers of its kind. The house was put together in times when men and women had money to spare. Its clientele and and employee's have severely dropped in number. So much that you are the only remaining two remaining "working ladies".

Workers of the house are distinct and must always present themselves with a large blue T on their scabbards and broaches. If not wearing an identifying signal, they are required to identify themselves as a member to everyone they speak with, and, before consenting to any "work".

The House of Traia is still run by the original Madam, Traia. The only other employee is Tupik.

The Awakening: 3 years prior
No-one saw it coming, no-one heard it coming, no books or legends predicted it.

The Befreier had always submitted to the other gods, yielding his animals and beasts both hideous and beautiful to the will of others. No more.

There was no conflict, just a change in... attitude...

Birds still flew, fish swam, bees buzzed. They just became more violent, and seem more intelligent and seemingly... organized.

The roads became unsafe to travel in small numbers, and the seas (although generally considered safer) were just as affected. Towns are subject to attack both by swarm and guerrilla tactics by animals they once never feared.

Its strange though. One will look at an animal and expect it to go along its normal business and it may change its mind and attack. Other times you may see an angry bear whom you've just disturbed, and it will just walk away.

Most people think it is best to just avoid most animals. Domesticated animals(including familiars, etc...) are just as prone to this behavior, therefore most have been abandoned to the wild. Even before attacking their master.

Animals/Beasts:
Humanoids have never been able to communicate with most animals, except basic training signals.(includes druids and other wilderness classes)

Before the awakening they were normal, and would run if scared. Now, some will attack on site, some will run away scared, and some may lead you into a trap while hunting them. They don't seem to have a particular agenda, but they are violent towards humanoids.

The Nation: Travest
Travest isn't a large nation. It is actually fairly small, but contains two important cities: Jazmith and Jordan(the Capital).

Cities have gone into a Martial Law sort of order, since even armies may have a hard time traveling outside of a cities limits. Even so, a peasant army/militia seems to be enough for small hamlets to defend themselves.

The most important duty of all rulers is providing food for the people. Since the Awakening farming has become a dangerous prospect, and most individuals aren't skilled enough to hunt animals that attack back.

There is not much correspondence between Jordan and any of the smaller cities. It would seem that they have the defense of their own walls and feeding the people are their main priority.

The main contact between cities comes from Runners.

The Befreier
The Befreier is a Demi-God who is also known as "The Beastmaster"

Most stories about how and why he started the Awakening are just that... stories. Nobody of note has come up with a reason that the gods would let him do what he's done, or why they haven't stopped him yet.

The Deep Sea
Much of this world is yet to be discovered. The deep sea has seen men leave, and return with riches/scars and stories of other men who insisted on exploring further. Occasionally men from unknown lands will arrive at port as well with spices, plants, animals, etc... that have never been seen on our shores before.

Madam Traia
Madam Traia loves her girls(and guys) and has always been good to them. She doesn't work for profit. She loves love, and she promotes her women as though they were her own children. She is middle aged, but looks much younger.

The Madam unfortunately was robbed of her chance to procreate by a priest of Vecna. She has never told you how or why.

Tupik
Tupik is a youth who was publicly refused by the constantly hiring militia and army recruiters. He is also the son of the right hand man to the Freiherr(ruler) of Jazmith, Markov.

Tupik's father Travod most certainly has made an order that Tupik is not to be allowed into military duty.

Tupik and Travod don't speak to one another. This is well-known public information. It has been that way since Tupik became a teenager.

Tupik's job is to protect the working ladies. He never does anything beside wait outside the room though. He seems to have a fierce loyalty to the Madame, and you will occasionally hear him in his room alone crying.

Travod
Travod is publicly known as a wizard. One of few. Most who are gifted with magic are shunned, and have never been particularly organized.

It is a signal of great respect or fear to have a wizard sit amongst your advisors. Travod doesn't speak publically or in court, so his opinions and reasons for being included amongst the Frieherr's advisor's remain shrouded.

Runners:
Runners are messengers that specialize in getting through the wilderness. They seem to have amazing luck, and are never attacked by groups of animals.

Pelor's Presence:
THIS DOES NOT APPLY HERE, BUT I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO READ IT.
In times long since forgotten, when it is said that wars were as common as housemice, all gods waged war against one another using mortals as their chess pieces. As they were doing so they only realized that they were losing all of the people that they were trying to win over. Humanity had become nearly extinct. In a moment of compromise, all of the major gods agreed that the field of combat should be protected, no matter the alignment, race, or religious belief/disbelief of the participant.

All fields of honorable battle are protected by all gods. Any can ignore this protection in their opponent if they give it up themselves. The definition of "honorable field" changes depending on which god is watching at the moment It is considered extreemly poor taste drop Pelors Presence, and is a crime in most communities.

Assasination attempts are not covered, the gods deal with assasins themselves.

Magic, Personi
The language of magic has its own personality. It knows who weilds it, and how powerful they are. It can be fickle, and sometimes must be convinced. It is said it has some personality traits of Mystra herself.

Magic has been known to lend itself to a cause at times of great need or consequence... or fail.

Some hypothesize that magic has its own agenda seperate from Mystra's. Some say that Mystra's control over magic is absolute, while others say she created it, but now it is like an adolescent child - it is rebelling against her.

When it comes to the language itself, it is known to hide itself, or leave the minds of those who would weild it if they don't exhibit control. For example, a young mage listening or reading the words of an advanced spell, or a spell from a shunned school may hear words that sound like magic, but don't resemble the actual words at all. Other times the language is heard, then nearly immediatly forgotten.

The term that encompasses these effects is "Personi". Used like, I don't rememberwhat words he used because of the Personi. Or, "this is the first time Personi has let me hear that spell, the words were beautiful. Etc...

Dino's Chaos
"Flower Shop"

A fighting/betting ring open late nights in the First Five district near the Tilted Tankard. Has a unique ring("Chaos Ring") that allows people to fight "to the death" in an arena that is almost like virtual reality. The competitors don't die, but might be scarred after participating.

Nojas is a house competitor, when newbies come in people place bets on how many shurikens he can land before the fight is over.

There is a coin that is required to gain entry. You can get one from "The Nose" outside by proving you're not a narc.

Chrimea's Shadow

An alerum mine that holds a secret... maybe?

Kings Alley

A field of alerum mines which is also at the interier of Aleris. So named because the squables over the ownership of the mines result in people just as powerful as kings once the resources come flowing from the earth.

Dradon's Mire

A wide waste of muck-land that held within it a community of folks who seemed to think that Dradon would be back. Dradon's very exsistance is questionable, as most scholars agree that the demi-god has even visited Aleris in the flesh.[/QUOTE]

So two questions (that I don't need answered to start building the character mechanically at least). Can I swap Giant for Draconic?

And you asked for rarity, but I don't want to shove something at you you'd feel doesn't fit the setting. So the ideas I have so far are: It's just a rare subrace of dragonborn, it's not even a proper "race" so much as a family line descended from a half-dragon that somehow managed to find a way to have offspring, or it's a race created by the kind of ancient wizards who made chimeras having experimented with mixing dragon properties with humans. I guess all of these options would make the race pretty rare, though the middle one seems like it'd be a 0 on your 1-10 scale. :smalltongue:
So which of these would you feel works best? Or do you have any alterations to any of them to make them fit better into the setting?

As far as factions are concerned, I was thinking of my character being an airship sailor (maybe even pilot), a member of the Brightguard, and a member of the Stone Lions (have to know how to at least repair the jetpack).

I'll edit a character sheet link into this post when I'm done with the mechanical bits.

I'm pretty much ready to go. I think my sheet is 100%.

@Samduke in the other thread I was discussing the mech legs with @Ramsus that is the sort of thing I'd have in mind for a unique item.

Unique abilities would be similar though not equipment based.

So basically we're talking minor artifact/mid level magic item(from 3.5) in scale - in my opinion.

I'd like to make use of something from your backgrounds to inform this choice. If you have a unique battle strategy or personality trait that could work as well.

@Ramsus
Rarity 0 it is. I like something like the wizards messing with dragon/human/chimera parts. Since this debacle every "pairing" has wound up with this body type.

Likely nobody has seen something like you before, which is just as likely to garner fear as hatred if you walk around in full display of your "condition". Though, Alerins are a cosmopolitin lot, so likely anybody from there has seen stranger...

OK for sailor, though the ships we're working on are hundreds of crew, you can have access to pilot(airship) instead of pilot(watercraft) from your sailor background though, which would allow you to pilot smaller airship-type-vehicles(which exsist, an important thing for someone in the party to be able to do IMHO).

Being Brightguard and Stone Lions both is not really possible. It would be similar to signing up for the marines and also the air force. I would suggest to you to stick with Brightguard, they'll know about your gear.

Switching from Giant to Draconic languages is fine.

Ok cool. Hmmm, I wanted to be a multi-faction member but I guess being a soldier and a pilot is good enough with the addition of the "what the heck are you!? going on with the character. I actually imagine the harshest discrimination comes from dragonborn who might be offended on an instinctual level.

Just to check, do I use the same prices for tal/alerum for my jetpack as the rune rifles? Does it come with the chambers full or do I need to pay for that? (I ask because my wealth roll was only barely above average and I'm 10 gold shy of being able to purchase a flask at those prices. Also because I'm unsure if my thing needs attuned alerum at all since it's not really dependent on an elemental effect and maybe unattuned would be cheaper. ("I would like 10 gallons of Super Unattuned." "Coins or Gems?" "Do you take Masterwork items?" :smalltongue:))

Edit: Put in the link to the character sheet in the above post. Just mechanics stuff right now. Gonna eat lunch and do other stuff. Hopefully will have the flavor stuff more or less figured out by the end of the day. Knowing me the name may elude me for 10-15 years though. (So bad at coming up with names.)

Yeah, being a member of both of those would be logistically found out in days after signing up.

Like:

Stone Lions:
"Mandatory training Saturday morning!"

BrightGuard:
"You're deployed from Friday until Tuesday guading this caravan down by the river."

You see? You could be a member/associate of many of the other things though(House Darkthorn, Azure Mask, Wing Valetta), as those are much looser on your time contraints.

All of the official "Guard" options are like full time jobs. Called upon often in service to their cause. Being an agent is a bit more free-will/you try to influence things in a way that is good for your association and also do occasional specific tasks for them.

NeverSleep
2015-09-16, 08:37 PM

Same tal/alaerum flask prices. Attuned alaerum gets you an extra 10' per tal. Remember that "attuning" is essentially free if you have an arcane buddy willing to spend an hour to do it. Being a member of the Brightguard, means you probably know a guy.

"Do you take Works of Art?" lol. That got me pretty good.

In Progress Character Sheet (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=556990)

I'm not really sure where to go special ability-wise. Maybe something to do with persuasion, or being a better spy? I really hope to do some politicking/scheming.

Ok thanks for the info. I guess I can at least assume the tanks are full right now even if I don't have a spare flask.

Also, news! I finished my backstory and other flavor details. Please check it out and let me know if you need me to change anything or need me to add anything specific. (If you're wondering what the deal is with the scabbard, Sailor says you can roll on the trinket table. Since it's just a flavor item, I used my irl dice because I love the feeling of rolling dice because that's why! That's what I got, I just decided to make a bit of a story out of it so she had some reason to be carrying it around instead of leaving it at home. If you want to use it as a hook for a sidequest or something later that'd be cool, but otherwise it's just a neat flavor thing she has.)

Also you will be pleased to note that unlike most adventurers, my character's family is not all dead and/or too far away to matter.

Speaking of family stuff, does anyone else have an Alaerum Elf as a parent/is one? If so would you like our characters to be related? It'd be great. The family get togethers would be amazingly awkward what with the already awkward elves and unspoken (hopefully) discrimination. (I could change the surname if that'd help. I just chose one out of the book I liked that also fit with the backstory I used for the scabbard. Yes seriously, I said I was terrible at names. I have to do things like take something out of the book and still need another prop to help me pick something out just for that much.)

@Entelechy
You're associated with House Traia, and the Seekers.

Your special ability/item as grated by DM is as follows:

You've been granted the use of an alaerum "taxi" from House Traia. Really this is just an 8 man "limo" that has been repurposed from "joy-rides" after it became less than prime condition - it got run down big time. It hasn't even been cleaned since it's last "use".

This thing is a bit of a hunk of junk- the "roof" is normally down, and it takes some real work(you're the only one who knows how)to get a modest covering over it. Its more like a patio umbrella when up.

The good thing though, is that the governor has been removed. This means that the scrying normally done to alaerume taxis doesn't apply here. Your routes are not limited to normal air traffic rules like most taxis. This allows for discretion.

It takes 3 attuned(force) tal to run the taxi for 8 hours(must run for 8 hours once started). 1 full minute to refill the tank which can only be done on the ground(becuase the tank is in a totally weird place). It is not a fast machine. Maybe 10-20 miles an hour depending on wind.

You've been given use of this to accompany your diplomatic exploits, in expectation that you'll help House Traia expand into the Westerlands somehow. They expect word back on habitable areas which spring up and are safe to expand to. Any word on promising industries or mining communities are ideal finds.

Additionally you're a "Diplomatic Savant".

People take you more seriously than your current "rank" might indicate. You've been known to follow through(i.e. convince others to act on) on promises you make.

Normal diplomacy checks have expertise(2x proficiency bonus).

@Darklink

I'm working on yours next.

Just persuasion.

@Darklink

Please really don't read this if you're not named Darklink:

You know these creatures.

You know them inside and out. You've felt the pull of the Befreier, and it is tempting.

Your interactions with the beastly kind are particularitly insightful. You've been known to handle unusual beasts for your experience with ease.

Choose 1 second level Druid spell, you can cast this 1x per day with the minimum caster level.(this will likely scale with exp.)

Any spell you cast that effects creatures has a chance to become permenant.

You have double profiencey bonus to handle animal.

You know you have what it takes to train unusual mounts and keep the Befreier at bay in all animals while you're nearby. You can sense him.

:-)

Are the cars common? I'm just trying to get a clear picture in my head of the setting.

They are common enough that you'd know one when you saw it, but it isn't likely that anybody you know owns one. Hundreds overhead in a given day. Many of the taxi's are properties of the larger houses and barely make enough money to cover costs but provide a much needed service to the city. They make travel in a megatropolis much easier!

Most people with means have a silver coin that can call one with a gesture for a small exra fee. Or folks can go to a designated area to pick one up.

"Please really don't read this if you're not X" This is like some kind of mental torture for me. I guess I'll have to get used to it since there are probably players with hidden goals/parts of secret-ish societies. But usually I'm pretty good at not mixing in character and out of character information and I love just knowing the story and details...because I like story stuff.

About taxi's ah ok, so it's just small airships. The limo part threw me off and I thought you were talking cars with wheels (which would mean gas stations, car dealerships, and all sorts of other stuff that would radically change the cityscape). When you have the time and aren't dealing with critical stuff for other people, I'd love to know if there's anything in particular I should know as part of the BrightGuard and what the ranks/sub-groups are (and what rank my character is). (I imagine if I'm a pilot or even work on airships at all I'd have a different rank title than someone who guards the walls or is a cavalryman or engineer (or whatever the term would be... artificer?) or such. And of course if I'm an officer or not also means different ranks. I would imagine with a megatropolis the ranks for the army (it even has two different military organizations as I understand) would need to have a more organized ranking system than "soldier, pilot, officer, general, that's it whatever bye have a good day!" Not that you need to come up with the entire thing, that'd be a large amount of work. I'd also be happy to make up my own title if you don't want to deal with it, still I'd need some kind of indication of how high up the ladder I am and what my actual job is. Or at least was before the opening events of the game...unless that would change my rank to something different.)

LOL. Yeah, I called it a limo because it was used by the "house of ill-repute"(House of Traia), and if I have to identify it further than that I might get censored by the boards, lol. It's former use should also be clear with a bit of imagination.

On rank: You've been signed up for about a six months or so, which means you've just exited the basic training and are now hitting the "real world". You've got pilot training, but it isn't likely they're putting you behind the wheel of one of these beasts in the near future.

You might get some supervised time occasionally and run drills with the landing and assault aiships though. Those are much smaller, and are parked in the big ship.

You can designate what your grunt pilot status rank is called if you'd like.

Somehow I didn't see the stuff about the rank and stuff in your earlier post. Six months huh? Should I adjust my backstory then? Because the way I wrote things down she'd have been in for about fifteen years. (I had assumed it took a while to get really trained in all those weapons and armor and figured flying might be something a bid hard to learn but also figured whatever you were doing with the start wouldn't involve raw recruits and such.) But I can edit her age and the age where she signed up a bit. Not sure how to get it down to six months though since that involves having some other kind of career for a while after being of "fighting age". Unless you were saying training took over a decade?

Edit: On the subject of characters knowing each other, still waiting to hear if anyone wants to be related. I'm open to other ideas too though.

This would be best facilitated by a list of who everyone is; as in having a short summary. Ivad is a druid and a scholar. He studies Alearum and the savage beasts. @Darklink was looking for this:

Magic, Personi

Spoiler

Hide

Etc...

@Tyeal:

Sacred Blooded: Your blood can serve as a replacement for material componenets less than 10g in value. Your blood has proven to be more than it seems on more than one occasion. Magicallly charged, holy-fied, otherworldly imbued... It has repelled demons, cured wounds, and soothed the dying.

As a free action you can draw blood during the casing of a spell(lose 1hp) and add a d4 to a healing spell. Other spells may have effects as well(check with DM or try it and see!)

You must choose one other PC who is privy to this information.

Book of the Drakes - you have come across an unusual tome in your travels. One that speaks of drakes and the workings of their minds. Personi hasn't allowed you to read the whole of this tome yet, but you learn more and more as you study it further. This is a prized possesion for you, and you have noticed that you don't like it when others show interest in it.

Patron - an avatar of your diety has made herself available to you. She is in ghost form, you're the only she is visable to. She occasionally grants you information or direction.

Audri was born to Adran Amastacia (male Alaerum Elf) and Iclyn (female dragon/human chimera).

Her mother's lineage was supposedly created by wizards in an ancient age who made all sorts of chimeric creatures by mixing together the properties of two or more naturally occurring creatures (including magical creatures and creatures native to other planes). The stories passed down to Audri say that blood of many kinds of dragons were used in the creation of her kind, which is why children often have completely different coloration than their parents. These stories also say that hundreds or maybe thousands of her kind existed at one point, but were used as tools of war and mostly died out. Audri and her mother are in fact unclear if there are any others not of their direct line, the only ones they know of being Audri, Iclyn, and Audri's grandfather Noctum (who Audri has never met and according to Iclyn has black and gray scales).

Iclyn grew up in the wilderness, raised by her father Noctum. They lived away from society and simply hunted and foraged what they needed and lived in a large but simple log cabin. However it wasn't exactly safe despite how strong and tough their kind were, and while Noctum was probably more dangerous than most things they encountered, Iclyn never really felt safe. Eventually she left the wilds in search of a safer place to live. Met with fear or at least a great deal of discrimination in most smaller settlements, Iclyn eventually made her way to the more cosmopolitan megatropolis of Aleris. Which is not to say she didn't face discrimination there as well, but she was at least allowed to have a clean place to live and a fair wage. For a while she worked in construction.

Adran's lineage supposedly dates back to ancestors who lived not only in the Feywild, but on the Moon itself. This of course would be a ridiculous claim if it wasn't the feywild. As such it's only dubious. The family has been in Aleris a long time, nearly since the beginning. The family isn't particularly large (despite the not particularly uncommon surname) and are primarily merchants if anything in particular. Adran's father was at least. When he died, he left his main business to his eldest son, and his secondary business to his eldest daughter, and left Adran with a decent (though not amazing) amount of money and unusual family heirlooms since Adran had always been the most interested in them. This was fine by Adran since he had always been a relatively carefree sort and hadn't been much interested in the family businesses anyhow. He used a good portion of the money to open up a tavern he named the Sunken Bridge. He named it this because it is situation atop a small floating island of stone just barely larger than the tavern that floats over a river with smaller floating stones set up to act as a bridge over the river if you go through the tavern. One doesn't have to leap from stone to stone (though you can), however heavily intoxicated or particularly rowdy individuals find they wind up in the river.

The Sunken Bridge is where Audri's parents met, as Adran was the proprietor and often the barkeep as well and Iclyn would come in to let off steam after a hard day's work. Eventually they fell in love, perhaps helped due to Adran's near inability to pick up on social awkwardness and his laid back attitude. They seem to be a good match, Adran outgoing and nearly impossible to offend and possessing of a decent business sense and Iclyn being adventurous, tough, and wise in the ways of the world. Also, despite the fact that Iclyn if well over two hundred years old, she still looks to be in her twenties. Which now that Audri is of maturity and looks the same is awkward in the presence of shorter lived races and in the longer lived ones who wouldn't expect this to be the case.

By the time Audri was born Iclyn was already working as a waitress/bouncer/sometimes bartender at the Sunken Bridge and has lived her entire life in Aleris. Thanks to growing up in a tavern she grew up on pretty much all the tall tales and stories of other lands one possibly could and also soon learned all about fighting and how to avoid them.

Not that she always managed to avoid fights, especially the discriminatory kind. In one such incident she was playing Guards and Goblins with other children in the neighborhood when one of the older kids (a bit older than should have really been playing with them) pulled out a knife he had made out of a piece of scrap iron. On this particular day, Audri had with her one of her father's heirlooms she had found a few days ago. A strange scabbard missing it's sword. As the older kid came at her with his knife and harsh words, Audri, by pure luck, managed to block the knife with the scabbard. To everyone's surprise the knife snapped in half (although it really shouldn't have been that surprising considering the quality of the knife but hey.... kids). While the bully stared stunned, Audri took the opportunity to instruct him in the fact that she knew more about brawling than he and he kind's superior strength. By hitting him several times with the scabbard until he was crawling away begging for mercy.

Audri later asked her father about the scabbard and he told her that it was passed down in their family back from the time when they lived on the Moon (in the feywild) and it was the scabbard to a magical sword known as the Skyshade. He had no idea what the sword could do, though he did know the scabbard at least was magical as he'd taken it to a profession wizard to have it identified, who wound up giving him half his money back as he couldn't tell what it did or if it did anything at all without it's blade. Audri wasn't very surprised to hear it was magical since the scabbard was so black it seemed to suck the light out of the air around it and it had little dots of light that looked just like the night stars, and the more obviously magical bit is that these stars would slowly move and sometimes there were other things displayed on the scabbard like strange colorful cloud-like things and comets. From then on Audri decided the scabbard was lucky and takes it with her pretty much everywhere she goes.

By the time Audri was twelve she had decided she wanted to be a BrightGuard, clearly a perfect match for someone as tough and strong as she was (or would be at least) and wished for adventure (and a good fight from time to time). For even longer she had wanted to be an airship pilot, as there was just something in her bones that longed to fly. She began sneaking into a training ground of the BrightGuard to watch them and learn (and dream big dreams of being part of such a heroic group where she could prove to everyone who insulted her that she was worth respect at least from her actions). One day when she was twelve she was caught while the senior instructors weren't around. The trainees decided to "give her a lesson since she clearly wanted one" and made her take up a training sword and had her face off against the eldest of them. At first he toyed with her, allowing her to block a strike here or there but mostly giving her somewhat painful smacks that she wasn't yet skilled enough to defend against. As this went on the slices and jabs became harder and harder, until the man stopped playing around and knocked the training sword from her hand and rose his above his head to give her a hard strike. He was completely caught off guard when she lifted him off his feet and threw him to the ground so hard he was too winded to get back up before one of the instructors returned and demanded to know what was going on. Two years later she began he training and has since made her way up to her dream of being a real BrightGaurd as well as an airship pilot.

When she officially became a member of the BrightGuard after completing her training, her father gifted her with another of his unusual heirlooms. An odd Alaerum mech that is worn on the back and grants burst of speed so strong they can send the wearer flying a short distance. Audri was thrilled and began practicing with it immediately. It's a good thing her home is above a river and that she's as tough as she is since there was a lot of error in the trial and error part of learning to use it.

Random Note: Her race may live an incredibly long time comparable to elves or may even be immortal. Neither Audri or Iclyn know for sure and this is mainly based off of Noctum having been approximately 450 years old and seemingly still in his prime when Iclyn last saw him.

I'll note I'm still not sure if I have to change backstory stuff since you (NeverSleep) said I'd only have been in the BrightGuard for six months and that clashes a lot (by like 15 years worth of time) with what I've got written down right now.

Posting here because PMs to DM are being stupid.
Concerning which order to join, I don't have a clear idea. Morvas'... temperament, would no doubt ruffle many feathers and make him hard to get along in a larger organization. So I dunno how well he'd work there. In a small adventuring group, he'd be okay. Less faces he has to remember. But higher-ups cracking down on him for reasons that just ignite that fuse in his hammer, or causing him to intentionally stop projects and other works in a giving organization out of spite, leading to messy situations.

As for the powers you suggested:
Divine Blood: Eh. Not sure how I feel about it. Could work thematically since he tends to rush in and fight anything at close range. But giving up blood for casting could become a slippery slope into something darker further down the road.

Book of the Drakes: Could see this becoming a long-term, helpful item.

Patron: This one I balked at, at first. Because Morvas wouldn't be terribly trusting of a ghostly visage of an anthropomorphic crocodile giving him information. He's a religious guy, sure, but he's not dim by any means.

But, what if he saw some OTHER deity?

Instead of the god he currently worships, what if it turns out that he, eventually, becomes the Cleric to a different deity? One that he doesn't know is better suited to him than Sobek? Someone like Bahamut, or Gond, god of Crafts, or Kelemvor, god of Death and Judgement, or Tyr, god of Justice? Just throwing a few ideas out there, but I think that could be a very interesting idea to play out.Name/race/class: Morvas Silverhand, Mountain Dwarf Cleric

Letter of Introduction

Morven Silverhand was born to parents he has long since forgotten. After being left on a scared hillside after a recent battle, he was recovered by the man who adopted him, Korben Stoutheart. He had been helping a group of Clerics, healers, and undertakers recover identifying items of dead soldiers, when he found the abandoned infant. One reason may have been that the child was covered in a thin layer of scales, despite clear Dwarven features.

He took the child with him and adopted him, teaching his son his militant traditions, as well as intentionally dodging any questions about Morvas' parents. But the Dwarf hit that rebellious age and fled the care of his adopted father, falling in with a group of street urchins, and joining a Thieves' Guild for a period of time. Thanks to his heritage, he could find hidden passages in stone and foundation, causing him to be invaluable when raiding noble's homes. This time was cut short when Korben found out about his escapades, causing him to be forcibly ejected from the Thieves' Guild by his adopted father, and pushed into becoming a Cleric to 'put him on the straight and narrow'.

Morven has since then grown into a somewhat angry, abrasive person. He follows the laws before him, but will pick a fight when he knows he can get away with it, or to prove a point. Despite his rough nature (and what he calls Dragonic appearance) he's a very capable Cleric. Preferring to wade into combat, hammer and shield at the ready, and unleashing divine thunder onto anyone who try to stand against him. Despite his gruff nature, he's highly creative and skilled with his hands, having apprenticed as a Mason in his time as a Cleric-in-training, and even learning needlepoint form the wife of a Noble he visited with his Master, Tarig Stonemeld.

Now, out on his own and armed with his years of training and experiences, he wishes to make a name for himself, despite his penchant for fighting and swinging at any who bring up his appearance. He wants to know about his parents and blood family, as well as wishing to carve a kingdom from the stone he learned to shape, to harbor, shelter, and protect aberrant folk like himself.

I like the "not my diety" route. Let's do this:

This ghost has not identified itself to you, but has given you solid advice more than once. (open the left door here first instead of going down the right cooridor saved your bacon, etc...) It appears as a human woman. Once you saw here sitting on a stone reading and she did not speak to you. That one was weird.

As for Divine Blood, I can take out the casting element - the more important part is that your "self" is imbued with weird holy/unholy/otherworldly anomalies.

Actually, how about the reverse? If you 'let' while on the attack, you can deal 1d4 "other"(other as in you don't know) damage. This will naturally apply if you were damaged in the previous round by slashing or piercing damage.

Backstory
Thorn Elmherst is my name, not your avearge man in any common factor for he sees himself better than most valueing his freedom to do as he wishes.
When Thorn was still young, he was hired by the local law to act as a distraction, they used his adaptability and flexibility with his skills so that the foot soldiers could pluder various areas and have a vast portion of the loot go directly to the local law. Thorn came to resent the legitimate authority of the local law because of his involvement in it's arbitrary actions. He is honest to himself, but as a member of the Azure Mask he can be tempted into lying or deceiving others for the right price.

RL is the priority! Fear not, I'll "ghost" you through some of the early stuff if you don't weigh-in, and I'll make some actions/words on your behalf to keep everything moving as needed when you can't be around.

Thanks for letting me know!

Also:

@Monk @TYEAL I have your stuff written up, but I can't locate your name/sheet atm.

2 bonus ki(access granted 1st level)

Concealed Rune Pistol: 1d8(1d10 if attuned to any particular damage type). 30' range, disadvantage out to 100'. Training(25 days) to 50' and 150'. 1 chamber for tal. Use as a bonus action.

Tome of 9 Palms: Directions for meditations and enlightenment. Can't read the whole thing due to Personi. You have followed it's directive and gained access to Fire Palm and Stutter Walk. The first through practice and diciplen in a few excersizes. The second through pages that revealed themselves to be a map. After following instructions you came upon a well. Meditating at the bottom you were made aware of the exsistence of pockets of un-reality you can take advantage of...

Fire Palm: Add 1d4 to an attack using a ki charge.

Stutter Walk: A distortion in reality allows you to move freely for a turn while all else is frozen. Any willful act of violence or interaction with another being ends the effect(you gain advantage on the attack though). Lasts 1 round.

Dark Friends: You know how to recruit people who can help you do dark things... (You can propose how/what/who you might be calling upon)

@NeverSleep: Huh. Ok. I'd actually forgotten about that. I'm not sure how to feel about that. I normally try to avoid unpredictable effect stuff (for example you won't ever see me play a Wild Magic Sorcerer since I'm not ok with the possibility of "whoops, RNG caused a party wipe!").

Can't say I'm not a bit jealous. They have such big..... lists.

As for the title I'm going to pitch something kind of weird. Like maybe the BrightGuard has different ranks for different categories of things since as far as I know they're kind of airforce, navy, marines, army, and national guard all at the same time and they'd need ways of designating who did what kind of stuff. So maybe people have multiple titles if they're qualified and have done different stuff as opposed to only having a single title. It's probably not common, since people mainly stick to one thing. But I can see in the setting that there might be some people who can handle naval or airship stuff that are also trained fighters as opposed to simply crew (it is still a medieval setting and there's probably a need for backup fighters/pilots and such to fill in where needed). So my character might have the titles of Master SkyGuard (sort of the equivalent of Master Sergeant in the air force I guess) and Primary (a rank sort of like the Immunes in the roman legions, basically someone with special skills that aren't common enough to have whole groups of people with as part of regular training. Though in this case I also imagine there is a rank of Specialist or something that is similar in name, but it's lower ranked than the Primary rank and at least implies a less front line combat role.) I also imagine there might be ranks that deal with magic casters, but that has no bearing on my character so not my problem! Anyhow, I imagine people would refer to my character as Master Primary SkyGuard or really whatever combination of the two ranks sounds best to them. I would imagine the ranks for different things sound different enough that people aren't going to wind up confused.

I FIGURED OUT WHAT I WAS MISSING!!!

@Tyeal had posted an earlier sheet about a monk character Warren Yrdis Seems he's going with Morvas instead, so you all can ignore that @monk post from earlier. Though the Tome of 9 palms sounds pretty awesome so...

@PsiLulz, you'll be getting that Monk stuff(edited):
2 bonus ki(access granted 1st level, progress as monk)

Concealed Rune Pistol: 1d8(1d10 if attuned to any particular damage type). 30' range, disadvantage out to 100'. Training(25 days) to 50' and 120'. 1 chamber for tal. Use as a bonus action.

Other than that I think we're ready to go! Anybody else missing anything that I should be aware of? Can you guys work out who knows who a bit better?

If you haven't done so already, roll 2d10 for tal of alaerum on hand.

If there's nothing else to address, I'll begin composing the opening with these folks in mind. Thanks again everybody for signing up to expand Aleris into the Westerlands!!

This wouldn't actually make any sense. My character is a member of the BrightGaurd and I'm not sure she even has the proper skills to be a mechanic.

This could happen. A Brightguard airship trained pilot would have the skills to help you with the taxi. @Ramsus's Audrie character could use pilot proficiency to do normal maintainance on that hunk of junk.

Everyday equivilant: Change the oil, change windshield wipers, fill gas, change a tire, check fluid levels, change brake pads and struts, buff a ding out, switch out a burnt out fuse, etc... Any major work he would know a specialist to send you to.

Audrie is a bit like your really handy friend when it comes to airships. Also, he's a way better pilot than Christopher Lloyd. Btw @Entelechy... name?

Hmmm... I like this.

Skyguard - All airship personel who are combet certified.
Skyward - All airship personel who are not combat certified, but serve in the air.

Brightguard - Aleris service member's organization - you can have ranks in a seperate faction within(modern equivilant - sniper, marksmen, equipment specialist, LAR, etc...). You can give those organizations/certs names as we go along.

We'll go with these(lowest to highest) for rank.

Squire(underaged or otherwise not-qualified individuals)
Private (of which all players will begin if aligned)
Companion-at-Arms (One PC has Companion-at-Arms status as granted by background)
Seargeant
Knight (Knight of Grace, Knight of Justcice, other knightly honorifics...)
Kinight officer
Master(quartermaster, skymaster, etc...)
Knight Commander
Brigadier General
General

So is the title I gave ok or.... what should it be if not since you now have an idea for ranks and such?

Also I also meant it didn't make sense for Audri (who is a she btw and there's no e at the end) to be a taxi pilot because she already has a full time job (also I can't fit the idea of taxi driver and what I've got for my character concept together in my head right now). I do believe we were discussing being relatives though. I'll look at the other characters and see if there's any connections to make there though since you said you want more.

Edit: Good to know I can make repairs though! (Also you sure you don't want to add some kind of fire breathing to my character? Something cantripy would be great for adding flavor.)

Edit 2: The only other character backstories I can find are Morvas Sliverhand and Thorn Elmherst. I suppose Morvas and Audri could have been on a mission together at some point? Otherwise the age difference is too much for them to have associated early in their lives. I don't really see how Audri could connect to Thorn... at least not in any way that I'd want her to.

Though there is one easy way for anyone to be known to Audri and know of her. Her parents do run a fairly well known tavern and they could always have met there.

You wuold be a Skyguard Private and a Brightguard private.

For the taxi - as everyone has been getting prepped for this campaign launch, you were put in charge of helping with this particular vehicle and intoduced to Christopher Lloyd. You get to deal with the vessel on your terms, unlike working on the big ships where they tell you exactly what to do and what not to do. The freedom is nice, and the parts are free, but it isn't exactly a prestigious station.

I think I could give you a fire breath(special):

Audri's Breath: A globe of fire leaves your mouth, partially magically induced, partially due to your draconic nature.
(Mechanically Acid Splash, but deals fire damage)
Usable 1x/minute(every 10 rounds).

@Neversleep: Cool stuff. I particularly like Stutter Walk.
Few questions:
-Will I be able to nab more things to use Ki on later?
-I'm assuming that other than lvl 1, my Ki pool should match that of the monks instead of increasing by one per lvl?
-Am I already proficient with the Rune Pistol?
-How does one attune a Rune Pistol?
-Can I get some info on the Azure Mask? I plan to be a member.

Also, updated my sheet. Sorry it took a while, my life was being absorbed by the Witcher 3 the past few days or so...

@Psilulz
New ki use will likely revolve around your studying the Tome of 9 Daggers.
You'll be at Monk ki rates +2. At lvl2, you'll get 2, then every level after that, 1 more.
You are proficient with the pistol. It is a hidden weapon in a sleeve or some-such.
You attune the tal, not the weapon, deatails to follow.

Attuning tal:
You can attune 1 tal per hour. Anybody who can use a form of magic can attune to (force) without spending a resource.
Attuning to another type, for example: (fire), takes the same amount of time but also requires a spell slot or similar resource to do so. The resource expended must be of that type(there may be exeptions to this rule).

So @Psilulz could attune alaerum with the proper tools(alaerum workshop or alaerum attunement tools - free procifiency for everyone! - 75g to buy your own). He can attune to (force) for free, or (fire) by expending a ki use. A second level slot can attune two tal over two hours(and so forth).

On Azure Mask:
Large organization, there are some specifics in the thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?388388-Aleris-Chronicles-Kainan-s-Wager-IC) I referred to earlier.
No killing on the job, no turning on other members, guild provides fences, etc...
Four designations: 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's.

A typical 4-out job generally needs one of each: Body, Hands, Feet, Face. 1, 2, 3, 4. The body is the muscle, Hands are for locks and pockets, Feet are the second story types, and faces deal with the public or guards when needed.

You should know what number you are.
Ears try to find work, and are considered information brokers.

For AZ members:
As far as the Azure Mask and this effort goes. Everyone who's a member has instructions to speak in thieve's cant to inform an advisor of the expidition leader's of your affiliation. After that you can help the mission in good faith with all you're worth, but keep an eye out for information that may benifit the guild later. Or might be worth sending out somebody asap. Communications will likely be slow but fairly reliable with the system they have so far.

Sorry, I am out of town, and will be until tomorrow evening. Even then, it's my brother's birthday, so its likely to be a hectic weekend (we do birthday's BIG in my family). I should have time to post, but not sit down and make much characterwise. I can fill in some details now, but I don't have my book with me.

So I guess within the Azure Mask I would be 4 (face)?

So, yeah, Ramsus, our characters can be siblings if you like.

Christopher Lloyd

Audri Phyr Amastacia

Who has Runepistol proficiency!?

Adran Cefrey
Thorn Elmhurst

Audri owns a runerifle.
Adran Cefrey owns a runepistol.

Rilfles are available at 100g, pistols at 80g.

Morvas - I think based on your demeanor, you'd be an associate of the Azure Maw. They are an adventuring group who sends people wherever discovery and adventure can be had. Think "Pathfinder Society" if you know them.

@NeverSleep: To be clear did you just say we all get a free proficiency in alaerum attunement, any tool (or language?) of our choice, or any skill or tool or language we want?

@Entelechy: I was thinking cousins actually since siblings would be weird since we couldn't be full siblings on you'd be the same race I am instead of half-elf. We could do half-siblings but you'd have to be significantly older than my character for the family dynamics to make any sense at all since we'd have different mothers from an elven father or....well I guess he wouldn't have married your character's mother for whatever reason or something else suitably awkward. Still, personally I think cousins gives us more freedom to have gone the very different directions we did without it being awkward for the other one but leaves us close enough for interesting family dynamics. But I'm open to ideas so if you really want to do the sibling thing we can figure it out.

Looked at Adran Cefrey... not sure how to make a character connection there. Though if my character is related to Entelechy's and the other two are both in the Azure Mask that'd probably all the connection I need. "A person my cousin knows somehow." It could go farther than that if both those players want and have ideas. (Assuming they even agree to know each other.)

Edit: Oooh a ranged weapon! Hurray! So what determines who knows how to use which? And what's the difference between the rifle and the pistol? (I mean the mechanical numbers, obviously I know the conceptual difference.)

Entelechy
2015-09-24, 02:14 PM
Huh. I wonder if I will be the only one without a runegun proficiency (I'm happy with Hex/Eldritch Blast when I get it).

Edit: Sure! Cousins works as well. It would make things a bit easier than half-siblings.

Everyone can attune tal(force) because everybody is proficient with the "tools" to do so. People who have some source of magic can attune tal to other types: (fire) (sonic) (etc...)

@Entelechy - You were supposed to be included in the pistol Proficiency, I don't know how I missed that - you have one as a special ability! Amending shortly!

The mechanics of what determines who had what proficiencies and/or ownership are not public knowledge. :-)

The mechanical numbers have been shared on this thread somewhere. If you have/want the weapon, I trust you'll find the #s. I know the pistol ones are with Entelechy's stuff, actually found it:

Christopher Lloyd's is different btw...

Rune Pistol: 1d8(1d10 if attuned to any particular damage type). 30' range, disadvantage out to 100'. Training(25 days) to 50' and 120'. 1 chamber for tal. Use as an attack action.

Rune Rifle info:

Martial weapon, proficiency upon special approval. Access to magic usage required.

Load: 2 (holds 2 rounds)
Requires special ammo(1gold each) which is a case with a rune that is 99%complete. The firing mechanism is actually the completion of a rune which charges the alaerum and fires off the projectile.

ammo is 1gold per shot(a 99% runed "cartridge")
Tal is 10 gold each(pre-attuned)
Flask of alaerum is 10 tal. 1 flask is 50 gold.
Alaerum crafters can attune tal at 1/hour and 1/short rest as long as they have the tools and proficiencies.
All crafters can attune fire, cold, sonic, acid, holy, dark. Specialty crafters may be able to craft special damage types(ex: dragonslayer, undeadbane, etc...)

There is a faint audio report upon firing(similar to arrow fire).
There is a faint visual report(trail) which can't be seen in normal light, and is easy to see in the dark. Alaestung can see the report in normal light.

1d10 bludgeoning damage
If the tal is attuned to an element, it delivers that type of damage instead.

Range is 60' and disadvantage out to 300'
40 days training increases range to 100
Training is 50 gold/day

She has a scroll case at her side on a holster that likely carries maps, letters, missives, etc... this is a fairly easy target to get at and still remain undetected. Roll at advantage.

There is a dagger on her inner belt that is a tougher target, but would definetly be impreelssive (roll at disadvantage).

If you could distract her for a moment, there is a broach clasping her tabberd together. If you snatched that, you could present it to her before or after the clothing likely falls. No advantage or disadvantages.

Remember, there are 5 associates with her who will be keeping an eye on you...

You can keep the name or leave it, but that's why I picked it out, lol!

And here I thought it was because my Limo had a flux capacitor. So much disappointment.

I think I might go with Hepzibah's spelling of Chris for a name (as in the Starjammers, as in Marvel Comics... Because I guess I am a geek like that?) I need to look up exactly what is it, though. (NOTE: I started writing this post hours before I got around to finishing it, and it's spelled "C'ris." Because apostrophe's make everything better.

BTW, my plan was to go with the OotS tradition of ambiguously gendered (half-)Elf, and but let's they are looking masc right now, since I presume they are acting under an assumed identity, and its a lot more inconspicuous to be gendered. So I will run with masculine pronouns until my character is in another disguise/acting as themselves.

In regards to darklink's post in the IC... are we even in the same place at the same time? If so are we actually near enough to see each other and recognize we're being put in a group together? @Ramsus has the right of it.

Imagine football field with hundreds of people on it in formation, standing at (relative)attention. You very likely can't see what is going on most of the time since everyone is on the same plane, but you can tell that the more important figures are moving through the smaller groups of people.

They ask questions to the group leaders about the divisions, then ask individuals questions like this occasionally. It's possible you could be near one or two people, but it would be hard to tell how everything is shaping up with just your own perspective at this point.

You might want to send PM bumps to the missing players or recruit a few replacements...

Ramsus
2015-09-30, 07:08 PM
Honestly four players is enough. Only really worth recruiting another (one) player if those of us we do have don't include any healers. Smaller size games tend to work out better anyway.

Entelechy
2015-09-30, 07:50 PM
Eh, I think 5th edition has made healing pretty vestigial. You heal so much with short rests and totally with long rests, and I kinda feel like in the day' spell economy you can always better use a spell slot to prevent damage than heal it.

Ramsus
2015-09-30, 08:41 PM
NPCs need healz too! Gosh! How insensitive! :smalltongue:

((Ok yeah I can kind of see your point, though there are always emergencies and having someone who can put someone back in a fight or prevent them from dying from ongoing damage while they're passed out or something is pretty nice.))

Entelechy
2015-09-30, 09:51 PM
True. It makes an okay "OH SH*T" button.

But this is part of my dislike of clerics in this edition. With less buffing and debuffing in 5e, no save or die, and nerfed usefulness of healing, I kinda feel like their niche is obsolete. Except perhaps at the very early game, I feel like any other full caster class would have something more useful and helpful to do with a spell slot than heal.

Ramsus
2015-09-30, 11:38 PM
Well Bards, Druids, and Paladins can heal too, doesn't have to be a cleric specifically. Although wildshape druids pretty much don't cast spells ever cuz they're too busy saying "I'M A BEAR!" in bear.

Though imo Healing Word is the best heal since you can just do it as an "oh yeah, this too" thing and not waste your whole turn healing.

Entelechy
2015-09-30, 11:45 PM
Speaking of druids, do you know if anyone ever pulled on a Barbarian Druid? Raging Wildshape would be scary....

darklink_shadow
2015-09-30, 11:55 PM
No, but I did have a Monk // Barbarian build idea... With a quarter staff, and some how getting shillelagh all the time. :smallwink: So maybe a Druid / Monk / Barbarian. But only one dip of Druid for the cantrip. . .

Entelechy
2015-10-01, 12:15 AM
At that rate it would be better to just use a feat for the cantrip. I think you would likely be more effective then using a whole level for just one cantrip.

I've never been super font of Barbarian/Monk simply because their unarmoured defense doesn't stack. Those kind of incompatible features always bug me...

I've thought it would be interesting to do a Paladin with shillelagh. Get it from a pact of the Book Warlock dip and cast it with Charisma. Suddenly Charisma does everything XD

darklink_shadow
2015-10-01, 12:31 AM
I reexaimed it and the build was actually Fighter / Monk, an it still doesn't work. Using the feat that gives you a free attack when attacking with a quarterstaff doesn't stack with the monk's extra punch. Just pure fighter is the build now.

That crewman response was for both of you, btw. Just waiting to see if Audri decides to stay up or go down before commencing the checks to keep the boat afloat.

Also, to see if Thomey will be upper deck or going down... :-D

Hmmmm, so I can't actually help fix the thing since I'm not a mage. (I mean I could probably make a single check at +1 if I use my fire spitting thing but... that's probably not much help.) I think it's fair to say Audri would know this once she sees what the problem is.

You could also "assist" - help action, grant advantage. Just saying.

But whatever you deem the bigger/biggest threat to be you should probably help with ... :-)

Hmmm... you seem to pick my busiest times to update. I had a client that needed a website built and launched in one day >.> (Only a Wordpress site, but it still needed a custom child-theme). I'll get to this ASAP.

Okay, so if we are level two, I have Jack of All Trades, giving my half-proficiency in all skills.

So Would I need to make that Arcana 15 check to know it might be worth heading to the crystal room?

I imagine I would be below decks, and not eligable to make the perception check. I imagine I'm in a small craft hanger with the limo, eating sandwiches with some mechanic types.

NeverSleep
2015-10-06, 05:49 PM
Yup! Sounds about right. Unless you ask for an update from someone around who might know. ..

Likely one of theseveral mechanic types knows.

Also, they are getting your taxi ready to launch as an emergency escape vehicle.

Sorry, man, been swamped. Ran out of energy before the I could post Monday (Tuesday?), and since then I've been working hard to better my PHP because I don't know enough to do the things the client wants done.

I am taking a break now, and will post. I hope I am not taking too much narrative authority, but I want to keep things moving. Let me know if I and I can edit

Plan for post:

Eating lunch and betting copper pennies => ship sinking => mechanic mentioning crystal attunement => telling NPC to get the taxi out of the hanger and hover need a balacony we can leap from if we can't fix the ship => running to the attunement room to try to do my part!

HUZZAH!

I have a real set of physical dice at work again(my d20 rolled to hot that I had to take the set home to DM with... mwhahah!).

That means I won't be rolling the base character rolls into the forum anymore.

Also, we're going to resolve most combat in a pbp friendly way. Everyone can roll initiaves and state intended actions simultaneously. Then I'll resolve the actions based on the initiative as "primacy".

Example:

Archer(1st in init): I want to shoot this thing as much as possible and keep my distance. (rolls 3 attack rolls).

Rogue(2nd in init): I want to shoot this thing until it is in range, then close and dual wield my daggers(rolls 3 attack rolls)

Wizard(last in init): I want to take some time to consider my options, then if an opportunity comes up where I can "X" I do that. (rolls an "X" type roll).

Resolution: Archer and rogue shoot a few arrows both taking out a goblin each. Then the goblin hot air baloon comes down and the rogue runs up to slash at it. Meanwhile the wizard has finally figured out what keeps it afloat. Then he targets the contols with a 1st level spell and ...

Would you like something nice and convenient to make combat maps with that allows all the players to move themselves/enemies as needed? I'll just save time and assume the answer is maybe and link it. I won't be offended if you don't want to of course.

I stole this from another game and didn't make it myself, so you're more than welcome to steal it too for other things. Please make your own copies though, this is my example copy.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AFhfUbNYquNtM19lVdFnXpGPPegqEAyD7IWlXxHf2Zo/edit#gid=0

It's really simple to use. Being a google spreadsheet you can put images on for monsters or PCs or whatever and anyone with access can move them around. You can also handle the PCs the way currently handled on it. That's done under Conditional Formatting (under Format) and makes it so anywhere you put in the character name it'll be the chosen text color and the chosen background color. The lines are done with the Borders tool (the thing that looks like a square of four squares next to the paint can). It's pretty simple, everyone can change whatever needs changing, and it doesn't require the GM spend a lot of time making the map or doing anything more complicated than making lines and maybe putting in some images for the monsters.

Thanks for the sheet.

I'll have to pass on using something like that. I post at work from a super dumb computer, so we'll mostly be using theatre of the mind combined with theatrical cut scenes, lol.

I'm still waiting on declarations of actions from everybody.

Is anybody waiting on info from me?

NeverSleep
2015-10-26, 02:19 PM
Audri is the only one who's announced an action up until this point. You should roll something and describe how you're approaching the drake as it rushes the ship.

If the rest of you would like to announce 2-3 rounds worth of action, now would be a good time.

I got your knowledge check in the last post @Darklink.

Let me know if anybody else is waiting on something before they act.

I totally thought I had responded to this earlier.

You know exactly what is on their head. It is a mind control device. It can be pulled off easily or, since it is a delicate instrument, a direct hit with something would destroy it.

NeverSleep

TheY are Wildling drakes. I gave you a fairly in depth description earlier.

They do speak draconic.

Ramsus
2015-11-03, 12:29 PM
I'll assume Audri heard that, but NeverSleep tell me if that's not the case.

darklink_shadow
2015-11-03, 02:31 PM
You said drakes. I asked if they were dragons. Drakes are not always dragons.

NeverSleep
2015-11-03, 03:35 PM
I guess to be more specific - drakes and dragons are like dogs and wolves. They have common lineage, but would be more like cousins.

Yes, Audri heard what he said.

Are people still here?

I've been kicked hard by the holiday busy bug amognst other IRL things.

If you three are interested in continuing here we can make a jump cut and get back to action, if you've moved on, or are otherwise uniterested/occupied - we'll officially leave it here.

Thanks for going as far as we did. Some cool character concepts - I enjoyed working on them with you all.

You want to roll solo?

darklink_shadow
2016-01-11, 11:07 AM
Ah, probably not. At least not with the character I made. He wouldn't be a good solo character, and I planned for him to rely on other PCs a lot.

NeverSleep
2016-01-11, 12:06 PM
Well, if you're interested in building a partner, you could play a duo. I'll throw in a DMPC into the mix for a small party.

Or, If you're more interested in full solo action you could bake up a more solo focused character and I'll find some way for you to have access to specialists as needed(likely crew/staff/specialists from these ships).

darklink_shadow
2016-01-11, 01:09 PM
Hmm, sure thing.

I probably will not have time to look into making a character until Wednesday night, but I will do so then.

My work schedule is weird today, and today only, and then Tuesday are game night, so I won't have time then.

So Wednesday it will have to be. Probably.

NeverSleep
2016-01-11, 02:46 PM
Sounds cool man. No particular rush.

Did any of the other starting packages(special items/equips) look like a fun starting point for you? Which way are you leaning? Duo or solo?

I'll likely pick up the adventure from the day that we are at right now, so they've been picked up by the crew, shown some expertise of some sort, etc...

darklink_shadow
2016-01-11, 04:30 PM
To be honest, I didn't really pay much attention to that
And it's been too long so I forgot.

I also forgot the character creation rules.

I'll probably do a Duo.

Warlock and Rogue twins.

Human Warlock
Actor Feat
CHA > WIS > INT > CON > DEX > STR

Human Rogue
Keen Mind Feat

Cool, just saw your edit from the last post.

Let's go standard array or point buy at your preference per book rules.

Any associations you'd like to be a part of?

darklink_shadow
2016-01-12, 03:47 PM
I was using the array from the recruitment thread.

As for associations.. yes, there are. I will post about those soon, but I need to refresh myself on them.

darklink_shadow
2016-01-12, 07:25 PM
Isabelle will join the Seekers and the Wing Valetta.

Edgar will join the Darkwicks, The Wing Valetta and the Azure Mask.

They are twins, born to a some what prestigious house, but not quite rich enough to be noble. Neither of them are heir apparent, as they have two older brothers and a younger sister. The father is a half-elf Glennsman, and their mother is a human Brightguard.
