Hello everyone, and welcome to yet another "help me with a build" thread. This one i find kinda tricky though: I'm trying to create a dwarven ranger.

We are starting at lvl 1 and I'm going for a good all around adventurer rather than a stealthy Ranger.

We are in Faerun

We are using 30pt buy

The two builds I was thinking of were a crossbow specialist or a melee ranger using Spinning Halberd from complete warrior. I want him to be good at shattering cavalry, because its something I'm pondering. While choice of weapons are not set in stone I would like to note that I'm not going to use a bow. I also have 300gp at my disposal.

Well, I would recommend going TWF and using the Dwarven Urgosh. You get all those TWF feats for free, regardless of your Dex score, so drop your Dex in favor of your Strength. Focus on skills like Know (Dungeoneering), favored enemies like Giants and Orcs, and take a look at some of the variants for rangers presented in CMag and Dungeonscape.

Urgosh is definitely good for beating calvary. Of course, you could take Oversized Two Weapon Fighting from Complete Adventurer and dual wield Dwarven Waraxes: but they can't be set against a charge. If you want Power Attack, definitely do either a double weapon (like the Urgosh) or Oversized Two Weapon Fighting, if you want to be able to get the maximum benefit.

And while Dexterity isn't as important for a dual wielding ranger, the general lack of AC required by light armor suggests not neglecting it too much.

For a shooter character: Scout 4/Ranger 14/Deepwarden 2. Take Swift Ambusher, Greater Manyshot, and Improved Skirmish... the rest don't matter too much. Unload a hail of arrows that all get a bunch of extra damage each turn. Whee! Of course, if your GM enforces multiclassing penalties, you'd need to be Scout 9/Ranger 9/Deepwarden 2, which isn't nearly as fun.

For melee: Fighter 2/Ranger 16/Deepwarden 2 works well.

What did you go with in the end?
