Edit: Hmmm, that would be Vimes right at the end of Thud!, improvising a new stanza for 'Where is my Cow?' TheRabidWalnut

a) work b) fail c) melt the bottom of the cauldron

Spot on. Sorry, I hadn't checked back and had no idea people were hinting for hints.

@V (and /\) Still some confusion I see... By my count the answer is from is page 94-95 of Wyrd Sisters. It is when Magrat is looking through Goodie Whemper's (the previous owner of Magrat's cottage) notes that Goodie wrote in her capacity as a research witch.

The old woman had been a great collector of such t hings and, most unusually, had written them down; witches didn't normally have much use for literacy. But book after book was filled with tiny, meticulous hand writing detailing the results of patient experiments in applied magic. Goodie Whemper had, in fact, been a research witch (1)

(1) Someone has to do it. It's all very well calling for eye of newt, but do you mean Common, Spotted or Great Crested? Which eye. anyway? Will tapioca do just as well? If we substitute the egg white will spell a) work b) fail or c ) melt the bottom out of the cauldron? Goodie Whemper's curiosity about such things was huge and insatiable (2).

(2) Nearly insatiable. It was probably satiated in her last flight to test whether a broomstick could survive having its bristles pulled out one by one in mid-air. According to the small black raven she had trained as a flight recorder, the answer was almost certainly no.

That is now as full an answer as I can provide.

And now, something deliberately vague but, to my knowledge, there is only one person who has mentioned the line "It's my birthday" in the series.:

It is, as already hinted, not a very good one. It is Lu Tze in a carnival mask.

As I recall, they are famed for being short and bad-tempered (due to being replicated from Glod).

If I managed to get in first, I will repeat my previous question, which is also dwarf-flavoured:

1: In Thud! He was holding the Device.
2. In Thud! He was talking with those deep-down dwarfs in that mine, geting there, waithing, running around, interfering; all specifically non-attacked.
3. Fifth Elephant: He and his wife had the Stone of Scone/Scone of Stone.

Why is Death offended about the State of the Cat in a Box philosophy/scienc?

too good a scene to pass on...

because it is supposed that you can not ascertain the state of the cat untill you open the lid, since the cat could be alive or death (or in one case, bloody furious, if the cat's name is greebo)... and it's impossible to know without looking.
DEATH is quite offended by this, since he reasons that "things will have come to a pretty pass before I don't know such a thing withouth checking"... or some other wording of the same meaning.

I don't know about this one - I was thinking of the time on the barracades where we was going to be attacked, bur wasn't as he had spiked the drinks.

2. In Thud! He was talking with those deep-down dwarfs in that mine, geting there, waithing, running around, interfering; all specifically non-attacked.

If you were talking about the scene towards the end of the book when the Summoning Dark was trying to make him kill the deep dwarves, then yes. The dwaves didn't attack him because they were confused by Vimes reciting "Where's my Cow?".

3. Fifth Elephant: He and his wife had the Stone of Scone/Scone of Stone.

Exactly right!

As to the current question:

You are indeed correct, so...

The Patrician reads music, and feels that the purity of music is compromised by playing it with instruments.

Kurald Galain
2007-07-05, 07:49 AM
Due to slight misunderstanding of the laws of economics, people in Ankh-Morpork trade in the "futures" of things, such as pork that hasn't been born yet. Because of Discworldian literal-mindedness, warehouses have been built to store this not-yet-existent pork until such time as it comes into existence. Because of quantum these warehouses become extremely cold, to the point where trolls such as Detritus are able to think clearly in one. He and Cuddy were trapped in one once, in Men At Arms.
