...what exactly are Gem Dragons? Dumb question, but I hadn't heard of them before today.

The other semi-notable characteristic of the gem dragons is that they are neutral with respect to good and evil. The varieties of gem dragons are amethyst, crystal, emerald, obsidian, sapphire, and topaz.

There was also a unique Ruby Dragon called Sardior, who I guess became a deity at some point (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20030124a)?

Well, they got 3e stats in MMII, anyway (aside from obsidian dragons (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psb/20030124b)). They've been around since at least Dragon #37, way back in 1980.

I believe gem dragons are originally from AD&D (2nd edition). Whereas metallic dragons are good and chromatic dragons are evil, gem dragons are neutral.

Way way back in the 1980's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6opadkWj6YI), you say?
