We've all seen them: the black-sweatered beret-wearing college kids with a sketchbook in their hands and a pocket full of dreams. But do these people really have magical abilities? Sure they do. You see, they have the ability to alter the world around them simply by making a drawing, sculpture, or piece of writing which depicts the change they wish to make. Surprisingly, these artsy types have not yet achieved world domination, but I for one will not be surprised when it happens.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

Artists are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the longsword, rapier, sap, short sword, shortbow, and whip. Artists are proficient with light armor and shields (except tower shields).

Art

An artist can create various magical effects using his chosen art form, whether it be painting, sculpture, or poetry. Most often, his created works are given life in some form and become real. Any creature or object created by the artist appears in a designated square adjacent to the artist when he is finished creating it. The artist must be within Close range to use any ability which targets another creature. An artist must have sufficient ranks in his chosen Craft (art) skill in order to produce the effect. An artist takes 10 minutes to create the piece of art which will produce the effect, but he may take a single move or standard action each round he is making art.

Creating art requires deep insight and mindblowing creativity; therefore, the artist adds his Wisdom or Charisma modifier (whichever is higher) to Craft (art) checks instead of his Intelligence modifier.

Boring Materials Costs:

Note: These costs may be waived at the DM's option, much like spellcasters are always assumed to have spell components.

An artist using a writing medium (such as poetry or sketching) requires ink (costs 8 gp per ounce), an inkpen or quill (costs 1 sp) and parchment (costs 2 sp per sheet). A single ability uses up 1/10 of an ounce of ink and one sheet of parchment. A masterwork inkpen or quill costs 55 gp and grants a +2 bonus on Craft (form of writing) checks. Using paper (costs 4 sp per sheet) instead of parchment grants a +1 bonus on Craft (form of writing) checks.

An artist who creatures physical art, such as figurines or wood carvings, requires clay, wood, marble, or similar (each ability requires 3 sp worth) and a sculpter's tool (costs 5 sp). A masterwork sculpter's tool costs 55 gp and grants a +2 bonus on Craft (sculpting) checks.

An artist who paints requires paint (costs 16 gp per ounce), a paintbrush (costs 1 sp), and a canvas (costs 5 sp). A single ability uses up 1/10 of an ounce of paint and one canvas. The artist may paint on a nearby rock or similar, erasing the need for a canvas. A masterwork paintbrush costs 55 gp and grants a +2 bonus on Craft (painting) checks.

Create Mundane Item (Su)

The simplest thing for an artist to do is to turn his creativity into a mundane item. The artist can create any item by describing it eloquently on paper or creating an image of it. The item must be non-magical. The item disappears after 10 minutes/level. The artist can only create an item whose value is no greater than (100 x artist level) gp.

Animate Artwork (Su)

The artist has the ability to magically animate a work of art he has created. This functions as the animate objects spell, except it lasts 10 minutes/level, only creates one animated object, and the object animated is always of tiny size. A piece of art can be stored by the artist and animated at any time with a command word. Its duration does not begin counting down until it is animated. Only one piece of art at a time can be animated, but multiple pieces of art can be stored. This does not work with any of the artist's other abilities.

At level 3, the artist can create an object of small size. At level 5, the artist can create an object of medium size. At level 7, the artist can create an object of large size. At level 9, the artist can create an object of huge size. At level 11, the artist can create an object of gargantuan size. At level 13, the artist can create an object of colossal size.

The artist must have at least 4 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability. Creating a medium object requires at least 8 ranks in Craft (any artform). Creating a large object requires at least 10 ranks in Craft (any artform). Creating a huge object requires at least 12 ranks in Craft (any artform). Creating a gargantuan object requires at least 14 ranks in Craft (any artform). Creating a colossal object requires at least 16 ranks in Craft (any artform).

Vivify Artwork (Su)

At level 2, the artist gains the ability to bring a creature into being by depicting it in a work of art. The creature cannot have more than half of the artist's class levels in HD. The allowed HD is increased by the artist's Charisma or Wisdom modifier (whichever is higher). The created creature may not gain any supernatural abilities, spell-like abilities, or class levels. The creature remains for 10 minutes/level before it turns to dust. Not even true ressurection, wish, or miracle can bring it back to life.

The artist must have at least 5 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability, plus two more ranks for each HD of the creature beyond the first.

Self-Portrait (Su)

At level 4, the artist gains the ability to change his own physical features by depicting the desired changes in a work of art. This functions as the spell alter self, except that it lasts for 10 minutes/level. Beginning at level 13, the artist is able to take on extraordinary abilities of creatures he mimics.

The artist must have at least 7 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Portrait (Su)

At level 6, the artist gains the ability to depict another creature in his art to alter it as the spell alter self, except that it lasts for 10 minutes/level. The creature is allowed a Will save to negate (DC 10 + 1/2 artist level + Cha or Wis modifier, whichever is higher). Beginning at level 15, the depicted creature is able to take on extraordinary abilities of the creature it mimics.

The artist must have at least 9 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Minor Alter Else (Su)

At level 7, the artist gains the ability to create minor magical effects with his art. He may duplicate any sorceror/wizard spell of 3rd level or lower, any other spell of 2nd level or lower, or produce an effect similar to that. This costs the artist 100 XP (or the spell's listed XP cost, whichever is higher) per usage. If the spell has a material component which costs more than 100 gp, the artist must provide that component. The artist's caster level is equal to his class level and save DC's are based off of his Wisdom or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher. The maximum length of any effect is 10 minutes per level.

The artist must have at least 10 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Improved Self-Portrait (Su)

At level 8, the artist gains the ability to heal his wounds by depicting himself as healed in his art. This heals the artist for hitpoints equal to his level times his Charisma or Wisdom modifier, whichever is higher. The artist may cure himself of certain conditions as the restoration spell (not requiring a material component) instead of healing himself. At level 17 this becomes greater restoration (without the XP cost).

The artist must have at least 11 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability. The artist must have at least 20 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use greater restoration with this ability.

Improved Portrait (Su)

At level 10, the artist gains the ability to heal the wounds of another creature by depicting it as healed in his art. This heals the creature for hitpoints equal to his level times his Charisma or Wisdom modifier, whichever is higher. The artist may cure the creature of certain conditions as the restoration spell (not requiring a material component) instead of healing it. At level 19 this becomes greater restoration (without the XP cost).

The artist must have at least 13 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability. The artist must have at least 22 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use greater restoration with this ability.

Expeditious Creation

Beginning at level 11, the artist only takes 5 minutes to produce a work of art. He may take two move actions or one standard action each round he is creating art.

The artist must have at least 14 ranks in Craft (any artform) for this to function.

Multiportrait

Beginning at level 11, the artist may use his portrait (but not self-portrait) abilities on 1 creature per level, no two of which may be more than 30 ft. apart. He must be within Close range of all of them.

The artist must have at least 14 ranks in Craft (any artform) for this to function.

Greater Self-Portrait (Su)

At level 12, the artist gains the ability to improve his ability scores by depicting himself as having greater ability scores in a work of art. This grants him a circumstance bonus equal his class level which may be divided up among his ability scores as he desires for 10 minutes/level. No single ability score may be increased by more than half the artist's level.

The artist must have at least 15 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Greater Portrait (Su)

At level 14, the artist gains the ability to improve the ability scores of another creature by depicting it as having greater ability scores in a work of art. This grants it a circumstance bonus equal to the artist's class level which may be divided up among its ability scores as the artist desires for 10 minutes/level. No single ability score may be increased by more than half the artist's level.

The artist must have at least 17 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Limited Alter Else (Su)

At level 15, the artist gains the ability to create nearly any effect with his artwork. This functions as the spell limited wish. The artist's caster level is equal to his class level and save DC's are based off of his Wisdom or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher. The maximum length of any effect is 10 minutes per level.

The artist must have at least 18 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Greater Animate Artwork

Beginning at level 16, the artist's animated artworks may have a single template applied to them, even if they don't qualify for it. It may have a maximum level adjustment of +2.

The artist must have at least 19 ranks in Craft (any artform) for this to function.

Inspired Production (Su)

At level 17, the artist no longer needs ink, paint, or sculpture materials to create art. He can manifest the materials from his crafting tool as he works.

The artist must have at least 20 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Superior Animate Artwork

Beginning at level 18, the artist's animated artworks may have any number of templates applied to them, even if they don't qualify for them. The templates may have a maximum level adjustment total equal to the artist's Wisdom or Charisma modifier (whichever is higher). In addition, the animated artwork may have its type changed to a type of the artist's choosing.

The artist must have at least 21 ranks in Craft (any artform) for this to function.

Alter Else (Su)

At level 19, the artist becomes limited only by his imagination by the things he can do with his art. This functions as the spell wish. The artist's caster level is equal to his class level and save DC's are based off of his Wisdom or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher. The maximum length of any effect is 10 minutes per level.

The artist must have at least 22 ranks in Craft (any artform) to use this ability.

Improved Expeditious Creation

Beginning at level 20, the artist only takes 1 minute to produce a work of art. He may take normal actions each round he is creating art, except his swift action is considered expended.

The artist must have at least 23 ranks in Craft (any artform) for this to function.

This class is quite interesting. I like it. A lot. I'm currently working on a Pictomancer base class (similar to this in some respects; a summoner type, mostly), but this is really quite awesome. I like how one can choose to either use Charisma or Wisdom as its primary caster stat, per se. A few suggestions are in order:

Vivify Artwork (Su)

I wouldn't limit this to only creatures with extraordinary abilities. Simply state that the created artwork/creature doesn't have/gain any of the supernatural or spell-like abilities of the base creature. You could then add that this doesn't work on creatures that advance via class levels.

Greater Animate Artwork

Might want to limit this to templates that they do qualify for, thus making Superior Animate Artwork that much better.

Additionally, you may want to add a class feature at about 10th level that reduces the production time on pieces of art to 5 minutes (or something like that). It seems kind of odd going from 10 minutes to 1 minute all of a sudden at 20th level.

yeah i had a little trouble with the template things because i'm not too versed in templates. i could find only one template applicable to constructs, and that had a -1 LA or something weird like that, so i made it say any template. i'll think about the shorter time thing too. thanks for the input.
