Where are threads being saved?
EnWorld has sent an email saying "EN World has set up an "Emergency WotC Evacuation Lifeboat" (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?538-WotC-Emergency-Evacuation-Lifeboat) forum so that valuable content can be saved from the WotC boards." How can I help?
Moving things over isn't difficult. Follow these steps:
Log into your WotC boards account, or make one.
Scroll to the bottom of the post you'd like to copy, and press Quote.
At the bottom of your quoted reply, there's an option called "Text Format". Select "Plain Text", and you'll see the HTML formatting included in the post.
Run the HTML-formatted post through an HTML-to-BBCode converter like this (http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?468980-Wizards-forums-migration-tool) or this (http://www.garyshood.com/htmltobb/). It should keep most of the formatting; add any missing formatting.
Post the quoted post to our boards. Please link to the original and credit the author; hopefully using the Wayback Machine (https://archive.org/web/) to create a stable link should work.
See post #2 for threads others have recommended saving; every hand copying things helps.For threads that likely won't have much community discussion (small builds, small homebrews), it might be best to post multiples to a single thread. This way we don't flood our forum with old material. Folks that wish to discuss things in detail can always make a thread about it. Otherwise, giving each thread its own new thread will make Googling easier for future users.

You most probably know by now that WotC is closing its D&D, M:tG and other community forums (http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?2896-WotC-To-Close-Forums-Including-D-D-and-M-tG) on October 29th. Already, hundreds of WotC forum members have begun migrating over here to EN World, and as part of that process they are transferring content that would otherwise be lost. The content is being placed in the Emergency WotC Evacuation Lifeboat forum (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?538-WotC-Emergency-Evacuation-Lifeboat), the Character Builds & Optimizations forum (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?363-Character-Builds-amp-Optimization), and the D&D Adventurer's League forum (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?539-D-amp-D-Adventurer-s-League). The Emergency WotC Evacuation Lifeboat Forum is a general storage area for any and all transferred content, regardless of its nature, until we get chance to sort through and move it all to where it needs to be. EN World and WotC member MerricB has spent over 12 hours coding a tool which makes it incredibly easy and quick to transfer your content from WotC's forums to here. It preserves formatting, and copies entire threads, making transferring your content take a matter of seconds rather than hours.

This tool isn't complete yet, but it should get most of the formatting from a series of posts on a page on the Wizards forums, convert it to BB Code, which you can copy and post on EN World.

It's a Windows program, written in C# on my Windows 10 machine - I have no idea if it'll work on previous versions of Windows. I know it won't work on Macs. Let me know if it works for you.

The program is pretty simple:
* put the URL of the page you wish to convert in the text box at the top of the page.
* press "Convert"
* Wait patiently for the page to load on the left-hand pane, and then for the BBCode to appear in the right-hand pane.
* Press "Copy" to copy the text to your clipboard.

At that point, you can do anything you like with it.

The left-hand pane is a simple browser, so you could navigate using that; it'll convert a Wizards forum page automatically when you get to the next. If you spot any types of formatting it is not bringing over, let me know. (It removes any orders to turn the text white or black, and it doesn't understand certain types of colour codes at the moment.)

The browser doesn't quite understand the Wizards log-in system on my computer. It might on yours.

A row of post numbers will appear down the bottom of the page as well.
* Press on a number to just cause that post to appear on the right-hand side; it also copies itself to your clipboard, ready for re-posting.

Yeah, Reddit is really not a good platform for discussion over long periods. Threads get hard to find after a few days and are locked completely after six months.

This is the third time I'd downloaded the WOTC Forums.

The entire file list, Including original thread number and Thread title, for this download is 14,479,782 bytes. The previous downloads, same lists, without duplicates, are 5,676,406 and 14,978,374 respectively. Overlap between the second, and most recent downloads is minimum. Second Download is from when WOTC put those archieves online for a few months.

Total Download size is:
DL1 1.36 GB
DL2 4.36 GB
DL3 24.8 GB (I may need to strip out the junk HTML code form it)

A friend of mine that is way better at Internet programming then me is working on coding up a website for me to put all those online in a way we can sort through them and remove the 'junk threads'
(i.e "Where do I find?") while categorizing the rest.

If the website falls throught, I'll put them up on Drop Box.

If anyone want's the file lists, let me know.

Did anyone ever save the "CharOp Campaign Smasher" list thread? Basically had all the Pun-Pun level things in it. I found it handy primarily just to have a handy list of things to bad.

EDIT: As of this post edit, I have saved to EN World many of the old threads in the 'SAVE ME' category. Specifically, I saved all the threads from the top of the list except most homebrew, Little Red Raiding Hood, and the Famous Optimized Character Index. I also saved all the threads from Tempest_Stormwind's Weekly Optimization Showcase. (Those are many.) I started to save other threads, but EN World timed out on me. Repeatedly.

If you want to save the other threads (like Homebrew) then do so QUICKLY!

I DID save all the threads linked to in this thread EXCEPT for most homebrew!

ORIGINAL POST: Has anyone saved the threads in the 'TODO: SAVE THESE' category on the first page? I saw that there was a massive forum backup with gigs and gigs of data, but I would like to have these threads ported to GiantITP, ENWorld, etc for more redundancy and immediate access.

I've got an ENWorld account (or did; I haven't used it in years) but wouldn't know where to go there to get the job done properly. I'm also kind of swamped with other related issues (Comcast closing its personal web pages and forcing me to rehost my game materials, Myth-Weavers changing its character sheets, Wizards of the Coast changes forcing me to update all their links in my game references, & c.) so if you could make the request I'd appreciate it.

I waited for a few days after the announcement, and when nobody else had decided to make a thread about what things had been moved, I decided I ought to do it before too many more threads were moved. I figured the transfer would be more orderly and efficient this way. I have no special connection to the WotC forums, other than possibly wanting to use some of the resources there at a future date.

Hello.

As some of you might recall, I mentioned in the discussion threads on the closure of the Wizards of the Coast forums that I mirrored all the D&D material in mid October.

This is the third mirroring I did of the Wizards of the Coast forums. I've cross-referenced them all, and removed all the duplicates.

Interestingly enough, the newest download only had 10,000 matches to the previous ones. I think there was a lot of purging over the years....

Anyway....

I could, very easily, have a mirror online in a few days. Not a big issue for me to do. One carefully made archive file, expanded on the server, and everything is ready to go.

However, I'm hoping to do more then a straight mirroring.

What I'm hoping to do, is set things up so we, as in the D&D community, shift through all those threads, and mark them for their content.

Because, let's face facts, alot of threads on discussion boards lack anything of value. And all three downloads were 'blind, grab it all'

i.e A questions that was asked anyone that read the book smacks their head and moves on to the next thread, or people complaining about something.

So, what I want to set up is straight forward.

A Mirror, where you can log in, and indicate what kind of content the thread has. In essence, inventory it.

Once that's done, I'd see about taking those threads, and their content, and turing them into a database or PDF or something.

Now, a friend of mine has offered to, and is supposed to be, working on this part of the project, but, we all know what real life can be like.

(I'd make it myself, but my database/programming experience is all Application/PC Client based, and not Internet/Web Client & Server based)

Should anyone want to take a crack at that themselves, here's what I have in mind..

Interface layout similar to Giants in the Playground. Control panel on the left, reading panel on the right, selection panel at the top.


Left Panel
Login/Password boxes
Sign up button. Sign up wants USER ID, an email address for password resets, and password to use.
i.e "The Demon", "[email protected]", "Demonica"
Passwords need to be 6 characters, and I don't care about the rest as it's just a tracker.

When a user joins, a new file would be created for them

USERID_ReviewResults.txt

The File Format would be as follows

USer ID, Forum, THread, Result

i.e

The Demon DL-1 Spells and Magic 1 Has Content

If Need be, there could be multiple files for each user, by Forum
i.e USERID_ForumName_ReviewResults
Actually, that would probably be the best method.

Form Navigation

Pull Down lists
DL/SubForum name, and when selected, goes to the oldest thread the user has not reviewed.
Anything ADMIN reviewed would be updated to all USERID_ReviewREsults.txt Files. (I can make the program to download, import, update, and reupload those) and now show up when reviewing. Bookmarks would be unaffected.

Selection Panel
Simple pull down, X options to indicate what kind of thread this is.

Thank you for continuing to work on this, Sol. Having a bunch of folks help go through the content to index it is a neat idea; I hope that folks would do so, and that it would be a useful effort. I think someone (MerricB? Someone on the BG boards?) was thinking about making a robot to scan threads for worthwhile content, but with my minimal coding knowledge I'm not sure how effective that would be.

I've worked on crazier. I have a database on my computer with 1435 published source books into it.

And finding the content in the threads is easy. Pull it all into Sqlserver, link to access and some VBA and SQL queries. Problem is, that doesn't get everything.

The index has been alphabetized. "]" delimitation and Concatenate() to the rescue to sort within BBCode tags. Is there anything a spreadsheet can't do?

For folks who made the mirrors that this index has linked to, future users might appreciate links back to the index from those threads.

I realize there's a few more threads that have been added to the EN World lifeboat; I'll check those and add them as necessary later. If anyone else knows of a thread I've missed, please let me know and I'll add it to the index.

Call Lightning/Call Lightning Storm + Cloudburst
Boost your damage to d10 by casting cloudburst beforehand.

Call Lightning/Call Lightning Storm + Weather Eye
Predict when you'll be able to get the additional damage without having to cast cloudburst.

Call Lightning/Call Lightning Storm + Summoning of Air Elementals
Same as the cloudburst combo with less duration, and add an elemental.

Summoning Spells + Animal Growth + Augmented Summoning
It's like having multiple cleric pcs with righteous might.

Storm Rage + Whirlwind or some other wind based spell
When facing other casters, you can cast, but they have to make concentration checks, also good for flying and not being able to be hit by missles.

Greater Magic Fang + Natures Favor
Massive bonuses for your animal companion (not to mention Nature's Avatar, all 3 of which stack)

Boget Begun + Chain of Eyes
Turn 25 exp into a familiar you can see through.

Spider Hand (BoVD)
Puts the previous combo to shame.

Wall of thorns + Woodland stride
Not so much a spell combo, but it's a wall you can go through but your enemy can't.

Spontaneously Summon Nature's Ally IV or higher
Summon a unicorn for spontaneous healing

Energy Immunity/Energy Resistance + Fireseeds
Add in a prayer bead and Orange Ioun stone for even more hurt. Deal rediculous amounts of damage. You can set them off yourself by being immune or resistant to the fire.

Embrace the Wild
Not so much a combo, but works well with the following forms:

Not so much a spell combo, but a spell with a variety of uses.

Mount the Echo Skull on an animated animal skeleton (if you're a slightly darker druid who doesn't mind working with your local necromancy-using Cleric.) Instant mobile recon at no risk.
Hang the Echo Skull on a necklace around the Barbarian's neck. He advances and attacks, while you cast spells through the skull at the enemies in front of him.
Echo Skull plus Unseen Servant makes for a fairly convincing Demilich.

Shambler + call Lightning
I'm sure this combo is well known by now, but it gets 10d4 con.

Shambler + Thunderhead
Same as above, but better.

Shapechange + Animal Companion
Turn both of you into shocker Lizards and do the double zap!

Acorn of Far Travel + Camouflage/Forest Fold
+10/20 Hide & Move Silently for 10min/level

Insect Plague + Wall of Thorns
Deathtrap for things that can't break free.

Quill Blast + Baleful Polymorph/Finger of Death
Increase the chance the opponent will fail the save against your Save or Die.

Flaming Sphere + Call Lightning
Basic Druid Blasting. 2 spells 5d6 per round.

Born of three thunders (feat) wall of fire
Can trap victims within it effects if they keep failing thier stun and or trip saves.

Blindsight (player's guide to faerun) or embrace the wild + obscuring mist
Concealment doable for the party at 3rd lvl.

Greenbound (lost empires of faerun) summons + obscuring mist in dungeons or vs landbound critters
Same as above, but for your summons since they have tremorsense.

Poison spell + fleshraker dinosaur (or any other poisoner) + touch of golden ice (book of exalted deeds)
Stack poisons - double or triple your poison fun.

Touch spells + pounce
Fullround attack and let off a touch attack. Nice with Poison, having the first attack reduce the con, and then you might end up killing it with the other attacks.

Mountain Stance + Foundation of Stone
Add caster level + 4 to prevent bullrush or trip and +2 AC (all unnamed bonuses)

Spirit Jaws + Icelance
Use Spirit Jaws to grapple and pin a foe, then conjure an Icelance just for the look on the foe's face and attack it: near auto hit: if it is stunned, move the spirit jaws to a new opponent and continue pounding on the now stunned foe.

Faerie Fire + Obscuring Mist
Give your party concealment, but retain you ability to attack the target.

Control Weather + Control Winds
In demand Tornadoes

Snowsight + Obscuring Snow (Frostburn)
Total Concealment vs non-adjacent. Concealment Vs adjacent foes. No hinderance for you.

Well I found a nice little 2nd level spell in the Complete Divine that Summons rainclouds and heavy rain for you! Cloudburst. at a duration of 10 min/level (1 step up above call lightning) it's almost as if that spell was made for call lightning! Also weather eye works well with it too.

Summoning Spells + Animal Growth + Augmented Summoning is like having multiple cleric pcs with righteous might.
