I had this idea for a Druid, who on top of her animal companion, has a Sunflower that walks around with her. I remembered Awaken could do trees, so I pulled it up on the SRD and it only said you can animate trees(without some shady rule bending). My DM may be willing to let me use it on a Sunflower, but I don't know if it would have to be potted all the time or not.

Animate Plants doesn't help me either, sadly. But I really like the idea and would like to be able to do it without DM fiat or bending the rules too terribly much. Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Sadly, 3.5 specifies that it only works on trees. Unlike in 5e where it says animals and plants.
So without a vague interpretation of tree, no there is no getting around this.
This is where bribing the DM comes into play.
I think the reasoning behind this is because most people would rather have a tree than a rose any day.

It does not work on flowers, because no one wants to see this come back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6zNwBTLSWU

Well, D&D would probably have a bit less of that and a bit more Triffids.

Hmm, this looks like a sunflower, is a weed, but one of it's common names is 'Tree Marigold'. It might count, as long as you don't get too much science in your DnD!
