View Full Version : Introduce a person to AMVs, using an AMV.

If say a person had never heard of an AMV, and you had to use an AMV to show what it was, which one would you use?

For me, I would choose Animeography 2013 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ1DlJxsUg8).

How about you?

That's pretty impressive! And all those shows came out two years ago already? I'm starting to feel old now. :smalltongue:

I'd probably choose something with a bit of a stronger narrative, though. The only problem is, most of them (like this amazing Steins;Gate/Florence + the Machine mashup (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub5iP0GQ5QA)) have spoilers! :smalltongue:

Though, I will say that I'm quite fond of the Unique Anime Openings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILN1rV2CGPA) supercut. The Every Anime Opening Ever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibPCLMH1NM4) supercut is also cheeky fun.

I'm ambivalent on 'all teh animez' style mashups. It doesn't matter how well done they are, it always feels like undisciplined showing off. Amateurish AMVs with a song and a single series that really go together offend me a lot less.

To be honest I'd choose a Linkin Park Ruroni Kenshin AMV (bonus points if the title is misspelled). Quality regardless, it will get the general concept across. That or one of those rare non-anime AMVs, that might actually make the concept easier to understand without adding distracting "what show is this" questions.

The obvious answer is to pick one from an anime they've seen. That way they get the song choice and any jokes, plus you avoid spoilers.

Personally I'd use the AMV classic of classics.

Yeah, I don't like if too many things are mixed into one video. May favourite, among those I can think of right now, is Johnny Cash and Cowboy Bebop. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_s5sWdanvc)

AMV Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJb_fMgrDv0), just to terrify people.
tainted donuts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kMBVp0M8IE). Because donuts and bounty hunting go hand in hand.
Danger Zone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbKt18CR5ns) its just too obvious to pass up (and awesome).
500 miles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkeuzElAIDA). because love has no boundaries
Ah My Angel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB0wWzO3wgU) literally.
Wanted dead or alive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pui0UzAFCJg), come on is there a better one than this?

classics never go out of style.

Seventh grade me is so annoyed, but 2015 me is so nostalgic.

Engel, by Rammstein. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQw05e26I-k) One of the more classic AMVs.

That’s actually the one I was looking for, but I couldn’t recall the name so I settled for the one I linked; which is still pretty good.

I don't think the discovery album and Interstella 5555 count.

To be fair, you might notice that I uploaded that. That's because all copy of that AMV was purged from youtube at one point, so I saved a copy of it, and uploaded it personally a bit ago for specific purpose of linking it when I need.

This ^

It is exactly how I got into AMVs. Give 'em a little familiar territory to start with and let them explore from there.

As the kind of person who would be the intended audience for the question asked in this thread, maybe you would appreciate some feedback: I am only familiar with a few anime series and vaguely aware of a few more. I only recently became aware what "AMV" means and that it is a big thing on the internet.

Looking at all the suggestions posted in this thread, this is my opinion:

The older stuff has not aged well, the newer videos are way more appealing. The cuts are faster and fit the music better. Even if you do not know what you are seeing you can just listen to the music and get hypnotized by the looking at the visuals.
The joke stuff does not work if you are not in to the joke. I have an intellectual understanding what the jokes are but they are either not that funny or I am missing context that makes them more funny.
The mashup videos also have less appeal to me than they probably have for a person who is more familiar with more different anime. Some were pretty good on their own (I liked the Linkin Park one and the one posted by the thread-opener) but the best parts for me were when I could say "I know that scene!" and feel really smart about that . Unfortunately, those moments were far too rare for me to really like these videos.
On the other hand, when only a single source is used I can at least get a feel what it is about. I dared the spoiler warning and watched the Steins;Gate AMV and I would say it is the one I liked best of all the videos linked in this thread. But it had quite the opposite effect than intended: It did not hook me on AMVs but now I am really interested in watching Steins;Gate :smalltongue:

Overall I would say that this is the best answer:

The obvious answer is to pick one from an anime they've seen. That way they get the song choice and any jokes, plus you avoid spoilers. My only previous AMV experience is from anime that I already knew and randomly stumbled upon AMVs when looking at fan art. Those were great. I really understood what was going on and could appreciate it. Starting from there I tried watching some other AMVs that were critically acclaimed but found that the experience is just way less intense if you do not know the source material. Which is why I was really hoping that this thread could point me to some good starter AMVs that work even if you do not know the anime itself. Unfortunately, I did not find such a thing. Even the ones that I liked only provide the same experience as watching a pretty music video as long as you do not know what you are looking at.

Look up Shiki Dragula AMV. It actually made me read the series because the video was so good. It will be on thebestAMVsofalltime channel, there is a different one that isn't as good floating around as well.

Edit: Somewhat NSFW. Creepy/gory.

Since Halloween is around the corner.

this is Halloween (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qztch6_Uhuk). While I’m not a Manson fan, the visuals perfectly match the feel of the song.

When you’re evil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqf0vkyYfGA). I like too, but it doesn’t quit fit as well, maybe I just like the song.

thrift shop bebop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXxQfk63ADA) this is even more entertaining when you recall the bebop crew is always flat broke.

Maybe i should have posted the thread AFTER I came back from the convention.

Well here are some of my runner ups for what i would use.

This one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFXpOz7GmjE) is old but has aged well.

If you have seen this movie and this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcJ80cd0gG4) doesn't tug on your heartstrings i'm very sorry for you.

This one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5d3uNWZXxY) is a good combo of animes.

For a while i couldn't watch this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ5ihcVhlGg) because of reasons, but now its all good.

Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NBEeN8MDsM) and here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wydvo2hH42c) are two FMA:B ones that are just... just...damn.

So, that's it.

Oh and spoilers on those last two.
