Does it do damage if you make a natural weapon/unarmed attack (actual attack, not touch), or do you *have* to touch with the flame?

You have to use your action to attack with the spell. You can't choose another form of attack and apply the spell effect on top of it. You would need some sort of channeling ability such as that granted by a duskblade or spellsword to deliver the spell effect through a different choice of attack.

Ah, damn. Oh well.

The above is incorrect, you can add the damage of any touch spell effects to unarmed strikes and natural weapons as per the rules compendium.

Produce flame is not a touch spell.

This spell is so damn weird. The only thing I am certain of is that if you could channel the damage with a natural attack, it would be with only a single natural attack per round. It appears in your "hand," singular, and only strikes with that particular "hand" would qualify for the extra damage.

Cool. Been playing that wrong. Took some looking to find the rule - found it on RC 126. Not sure if it is in PHB or DMG also but good to know this for the future.

Oh and don't forget to take extra damage when using Produce Flame from all of the GitP forum members who are throwing books at your head. Produce Flame is not generally considered a very good spell around here. :smallwink:

So it isn't. Still other touch spells can. Improved Unarmed Strike lets you do it as part of the spell, those without the feat can hold the charge and attack afterward.

Improved Unarmed Strike has nothing to do with allowing this; this capability is built into the Combat rules for casting a spell. What Improved Unarmed Strike will do is let your (regular, not touch) attack not provoke AoOs. As soon as you cast a standard action touch attack spell in combat your body is holding the charge of that spell, and you may (attempt to) deliver the spell charge either during the same round you cast the spell or in a subsequent round. Successfully punching or kicking your opponent unarmed always counts as "touching" them.

Edit: SangoProduction, is there some reason you're not using the "Simple Q&A" thread for these questions?
