So, in a game that's starting at level 6, one player is curious about playing a Raptor. He's confused about what it should look like to start with (as am I, though I've not seen the physical book yet). It sounds like he's saying that the book is telling him that Raptors start with four racial hit dice (though I'm not sure what of... Animal, possibly, or maybe Magical Beast), but that it doesn't have any level adjustment beyond that, so a level one character would be level five.

On the other hand, the abilities that it gets include +7 str, +6 con, +4 dex, and +1 to both int and wis, a sixty foot movement speed, a +9 Jump bonus, and as far as penalties go it looks like it gets a -6 to using weapons not specifically meant for raptors (and a -2 to weapons that are.)

Has... has anyone seen this before? Even at level five for a single level that seems... a bit much. Thoughts?

I believe it's from The Complete Guide to Velociraptors (http://www.goodman-games.com/1002preview.html). Other than that, I don't know a thing about the race.

Yes, that's the book he's referencing. At least, the title's the same. I just haven't been able to see him (and likely won't till tomorrow.)

The good news is that the game will be picking up in the middle of the Talenta Planes in Eberron, so his presence won't be too hard to justify. I'm just worried he'll be a weirdly powerful figure in a group of level 6 players. His plan is ranger, so... Level 2 ranger will hopefully not be too bad. I'm just not sure.
